Building a bridge between school and community

Garden Spot names athletic director

Keith Blackwell, who is presently a technology education teacher at Garden Spot Middle School (GSMS), has experience in a variety of areas. His talents as a musician are well known in the community, and he currently serves as a co-pastor at Summit View Brethren in Christ Church. He’s also announced Garden Spot High School football games and boys’ varsity basketball games for several years.

However, it is Keith’s experience building relationships that he feels will be among the most important skills he brings to his new role as athletic director for the ELANCO School District. Keith was officially named to the post at a school board meeting on Jan. 13. “My goal is to (build a) bridge between the community and the school district through

Calling all hunters

When Kevin Ressler, one of the organizers of the Ephrata Area Churches’ annual New Holland Sportsman Banquet, learned that Eddie Salter was being considered as the 2025 speaker, the turkey hunter’s name was not familiar. “I had never heard of him before,” stated Ressler, who noted that the event had hosted deer hunters as speakers for the last several years. “We wanted to try something different,” Ressler pointed out. “(Salter) deer hunts, but he’s big into turkeys.”

The family-friendly banquet,

which was first held in 2005, will take place on Friday, March 14, at Yoder’s Restaurant, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland. Attendees can view about 10 vendor stands, which will include hunting and fishing gear as well as other local businesses, such as a car dealership, when doors open at 5 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6:15 p.m.

According to Ressler, the event will again feature a number of door prizes, which are provided by banquet sponsors. Ressler noted that the prizes will not necessarily be related to hunting and fishing. “We will have free car washes, maybe a

Keith was raised in New Holland. He graduated from Garden Spot High School (GSHS) in 2006, and he

In the fall of 2024, when Keith learned that the position of ELANCO athletic director was open, he had a feeling he should apply. “I have always been involved in athletics,” Keith stated, noting that he played in youth leagues and bowled and played football at GSHS. “I am passionate about sports and athletics,” he said. He shared his interest in the position with his wife, Stephanie. “Through prayerful discernment, we decided that whatever doors opened, we would walk through them,” recalled Keith. “If this wasn’t the plan for our family, then the doors would close.”

Homeschooling is more than the latest learning style

For some parents, homeschooling has nothing to do with not trusting others with the education of their children. It’s simply a bonding opportunity that they can’t pass up.

“I prayed about it, and the Lord brought me to several verses in the Bible,” said Kathy Fogel, a Manheim Township homeschool mom and teacher. “When we pass away, we’re not going to take anything with us. The only thing we’re going to leave behind is people and our children. When I’ve talked with older people and asked them if they have any regrets, the only thing they say is they wish they had better relationships with their families. That (regret) is not what we want. We want to invest in our family.”

Township in November of 2020, during the height of the pandemic, and the children have never attended a public or private school.

“My whole thing with homeschooling is that you have to have a child’s heart and discipline first,” said Fogel. “Once that’s established, they wake up knowing this is what we do. Establishing a rhythm and expectations, it’s hard. Once it’s established, it flows well.”

In the education of her children, Fogel follows a teaching curriculum that includes all the core subjects, including reading, writing, math and social studies. She also utilizes resources from online sources, local homeschool co-ops and other parents who are teaching their children.

Fogel aren’t required to be certified to teach their children. But homeschooled students are required to pass tests at specific points of their education journeys.

“I know a lot of moms who have been in the classroom,” continued Fogel, “and they asked themselves, ‘Why am I doing this? Why am I separating myself from my child?’”

Fogel is currently homeschooling her four children, Kenneth, 12; Lily, 10; Alana, 8; and Aurora, 4. The Fogels moved to Manheim

Some families employ the use of tutors as a way to supplement their children’s homeschool experiences.

“I graduated from a good school, and I figure things out,” said Fogel. “The Lord gives me the things I need to know. Because I’m in a co-op where there are so many driven and intelligent moms, we share ideas and concerns. Because we’re able to share things, we’re all better off.”

Homeschooling in Pennsylvania is regulated by state laws, and parents like

“I (administer the state evaluations) yearly just to check their progress,” said Fogel. “We do evaluations at the end of each school year and submit the evaluations to the school district (Manheim Township). This year, some homeschoolers have been able to join public schools for certain classes.”

The Fogel children are four of 193 students currently being homeschooled in Manheim Township.

The Coalition of Homeschoolers Across Lancaster County (CHALC) serves more than 600 homeschool families in the county and surrounding areas.

Fogel noted that she’s

heard that the number of homeschool families is growing. “I’ve noticed it in our circles,” she noted. “I’ve heard parents say, ‘We find that it’s so much better.’ But I’ve also heard, ‘I’m not doing this again because it’s so hard.’ Your kids can bring out the best in you and the worst in you.”

“One parent has to stay home, and there is a loss of income,” Fogel continued. “It’s a sacrifice and a privilege to do. You have to be careful and aware of your resources. It can be expensive, or it can be less expensive. It’s very customizable. You have to be very wise with the things you spend your time on.”

Welcome Center temporarily relocates

The Lancaster City Welcome Center, located at 38 Penn Square, temporarily closed to the public on Jan. 15 as renovations began. Construction is expected to take 12 to 15 months.

During this time, Welcome Center staff members will assist visitors from a tem -

porary kiosk in the lobby of the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square, located at 25 S. Queen St.

The renovations will modernize the Welcome Center, addressing water damage, improving energy efficiency, enhancing accessibility with upgraded

entrances, and adding new public restroom facilities. These improvements are also intended to provide a better working environment for the staff.

The Welcome Center is housed in Old City Hall, a historic building constructed in the late 1700s that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Salter is known for his lifelong love of turkey hunting, having taken his first bird at the age of 10. In 1981, he turned his talents to competitive turkey calling, garnering two World Open Turkey Calling Championships, six Alabama State Championships, and seven Southeastern Open Calling Championships. He created Eddie Salter Game Calls Inc., which produces turkey and deer calls, along with other hunting-related products. He has been seen on Hunters Specialties Outdoors TV on The Outdoor Channel, ESPN, and ABC’s 20/20. Salter will give his testimony and discuss his love of both turkey and deer hunting.

Ressler said that recent banquets have averaged

attendance of nearly 300, but that the venue can seat up to 500. “It’s good food and good fellowship,” said Ressler, adding, “My philosophy is that if (the banquet) brings one person to Christ, it’s worth (holding).”

The Ephrata Area Churches group that sponsors the event includes about a dozen churches located in Ephrata and Akron.

There is a fee to attend the dinner, and a limited number of tickets is available. Organizers recommend that tickets be purchased by Friday, March 7. Tuition discount available at Drexel

Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology has announced a new feature of its relationship with Drexel University. Graduates of Thaddeus Stevens College are eligible for the Drexel Promise, which provides students who have earned an associate degree with a renewable scholarship for 50% decreased tuition as they pursue a bachelor’s degree at Drexel.

Some graduates from Thaddeus Stevens College pursue additional higher education within five years of graduating, and the college maintains several articulation agreements with other institutions to facilitate smooth transitions into additional learning opportunities. The college’s articulation agreement with Drexel was first announced in 2021 and seeks to enable students with an associate degree in computer and network systems administration or business administration to seamlessly pursue a related program at Drexel.

The Drexel Promise tuition discount is available to graduates holding two-year degrees from an accredited community college. With this program, Drexel works to reduce financial barriers and their resulting inequities for students. First offered to students in specific regions, the

Now, Keith is looking forward to his full-time start date on Monday, Feb. 17, believing he brings a different outlook to the role. “I have been in the classroom 15 years teaching, and I think that gives me a perspective of the student side of (being a) student-ath -

lete,” Keith said. In the meantime, he is working with the interim director and interviewing tennis coaches, noting that he wants to attract strong coaching talent to the area. “(I hope) to build an environment where coaches want to come and stay and be a part of (ELANCO),” he said. “I am excited to work with our coaches and to build programs that our athletes want to be a part of and more students want to get involved in.”

Lastly, Keith noted that he is especially excited to embrace the new challenge. “This isn’t just a job,” he said. “If I don’t succeed, my kids and my community aren’t succeeding.”

at least 50 years. He recommends that Chess Club participants be at least age 10. “People can come and learn how to play chess; we are willing to teach them,” he stated. Those who already play the game are also invited to attend.

Joe was accompanied to the most recent Chess Club by his nephew, AJ Cress, 14, who started playing at age 12. When asked if it is hard to learn to play chess, AJ responded, “It’s hard to master how to move. You can learn what the pieces do, but there is a lot of theory behind the moves and different strategies you can use,” he replied. “It’s a lot about recognizing patterns in the board and knowing what to do.”

“It takes time to learn how to move the pieces,”

from pg 1

Joe added. “(The hard part is learning) how to put everything together and move the pieces and accomplish you goal, which is to checkmate the other player.”

“You learn by playing, playing, playing and practice, practice, practice,” Joe added.

While both play chess online, Joe and AJ said they prefer playing with an opponent face to face. “I prefer the real chess,” said AJ.

“I don’t concentrate as much playing (online),” Joe said, noting that he has played for chess clubs and played against professionals as well as at an international chess tournament. “You don’t know who you (are playing). When you see the person, you want to win.”

The Chess Club has the use of six magnetic chess boards that were donated to library. “They are topnotch chess boards,” Joe said.

“They have wooden pieces and are magnetic on the bottom, so they don’t fall over as easily,” AJ added.

Joe encourages parents to bring their children to the library to learn to play. “It’s really a good game for young people to start playing,” he stated. “You are not on the computer, not playing games on the phone and it definitely helps your mind.”

He recalled establishing a Chess Club at a school for resource students. “We taught them how to play chess, and the teachers actually thanked me and said it made them better students,” Joe noted. Joe hopes to grow the club at the library because he enjoys teaching as well as playing those who already know the game. “We want to promote chess, and, down the road, we hope to have a chess marathon,” he shared.

The Village Library is located at 207 N. Walnut St., Morgantown. For more information about the club, contact library director Carol Donahue at 610-2861022 or smolibrary@gmail .com. Presidents’ Day tours set at Wheatland

In celebration of Presidents’ Day, LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, will offer a special tour program at Wheatland, the historic home of President James Buchanan, on Monday, Feb. 17. Tours will be offered on the hour starting at 10 a.m., with the last tour beginning at 3 p.m.

Each Presidents’ Day, tours at Wheatland examine a specific topic related to the Lancaster politician’s public life. This year’s program, “The Feud That Divided the Democratic Party,” will delve into the decades of the 1830s through 1860s to explore the roots of political doctrines and values held by Democrats Buchanan and Stephen Douglas. Their disagreements and differing interpretation of the law and society frequently clashed, creating a toxic political atmosphere that would cost both of them

the 1852 Democratic nomination and, later, split the Democratic Party. At the heart of their disagreements was the application of popular sovereignty, the right of citizens in territories to confirm their state’s entry into the Union as a free or slave state. Visitors will learn about each individual’s beliefs and values and how they aligned but also created a rift within the party.

Advance ticket purchase is encouraged; to purchase tickets, visit or call 717392-4633. Members of LancasterHistory may receive complimentary access, but they are advised to book in advance to secure their preferred tour time. Discounts are available to EBT, SNAP, and WIC cardholders through the Museums for All program; seniors age 65 and up; students age 11 through college; and active military members and veterans.

Museum plans photography class

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will offer a Railroad Photography 101 class, led by noted railroad photographer and author Brian Solomon, on Tuesday, Feb. 25, from 10 a.m. to noon. The program will focus on tips and techniques for photographing locomotives and railroad cars. Attendees should bring a smartphone, digital camera, or film camera to take photos of the museum’s historic equipment, like the Virginia & Truckee Railroad Tahoe, the Pennsylvania Railroad GG1 No. 4935, and the Conrail GP30 No. 2233.

Solomon earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in photographic illustration from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He produces a daily blog about railroad photography, and his articles and photography have appeared in many railway magazines. He was presented with the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society’s Fred A. and Jane R. Stindt Photography Award in 2020 for his lifetime achievements in railroad photography. Solomon is the author of more than 70 books and writes a monthly travel column and feature articles for Trains Magazine. He is the marketing manager for New Hampshire’s Conway Scenic Railroad. Copies of many of his books are available for purchase in the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s Whistle Stop Shop museum store. Solomon lives with his wife, Kris, in Lancaster County. The class is limited to 15 individuals and is designed for beginning photographers age 18 and over. There is a fee. To register, visit www .eventbrite.com. In the case of inclement weather, the class will be held on Tuesday, March 4. For more information about the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, visit www.rrmuseumpa .org or call 717-687-8628.
