The band called 3:16, organized by Joe Liptock, music director and worship leader at Mount Zion United Methodist C hurch, 753 Mount Zion Road, Narvon, has interesting beginnings. “It started two years (ago) in April when we did the Ray Brubacher event,” recalled Liptock, who noted that the five band members also serve on the church worship team. bout five years ago, when Erica Shirk moved from Pennsylvania to Oregon, pastor Dawn Ranck-Hower of New Holland Mennonite Church (NHMC), 18 Wester n Ave., contacted Shirk’s daughter, Hilda, to ask what Erica had been doing for Union Community Care on New Holland Avenue in Lancaster. “Erica would make crafts for them,” explained Ranck-Hower, an avid crocheter who soon learned that Union Community Care was in need of afghans. Ranck-Hower explained that the afghans are given to babies of immigrants who do not have a family member or friend here to make a handcrafted blanket for their baby. Ranck-Hower quickly connected with a few other crocheters at church, who then invited their family members to help out. The group’s first year making afghans for Union was 2021. More than 400 handmade items were created in 2023 and delivered in early

2024. Ranck-Hower reported that 223 afghans, 24 quilts, and 155 bibs were crocheted or knitted. “The year before that, we did about 200 afghans,” she said. The goal for the coming year is to donate at least 350 items. Ranck-Hower referred to the group of fiber arts aficionados as “a family affair,” noting that three family units are involved and that members have met together as a group only twice. Ranck-Hower has involved her sister Eileen Ranck and her mother, Rosanna Ranck, who makes baby bibs as well as afghans. Sue Martin and her mother, Mary Shuot, are also involved, as are Dawn Kaczor and her family members, which include her daughter, Elsa Lantz, who lives in Colorado; mother, Valetta Kaczor; and sister, Carla Kaczor, both of whom live in the Souderton area. “Sue and Dawn are usually crocheting during church,” said Ranck-Hower, who is not bothered by attendees who crochet during her sermons because she

The band, which derives its name from the verse John 3:16, features Liptock on keyboards and vocals; Jim Conners on guitar, keyboards, and vocals; Laquell Cooper on drums; and vocalist Travis Messner. Among the many songs the band plays are “How Great Is Our God,” “Amazing Grace,” “There’s Power in the Blood,” and “Good, Good Father.” The band plays additional music by Zach Williams, David Crowder, Chris Tomlin, and Lauren Daigle. “We do some country (songs),” said Cooper, who mentioned “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver as one of the selections. “ We recite John 3:16 before all our music events,” shared Liptock . “Our

CJ WINAND

CJ has served on the Educational Review Committee for the National Rifle Association’s Whitetail Deer Hunter Clinic Program and is a featured seminar speaker on the NRA’s Great American Hunters Tour. CJ worked on a Masters of Science degree in Wildlife Management at West Virginia University under Dr. David Samuel (Conservation Editor for Bowhunter magazine). CJ also manages and guides on several quality deer management programs around the country. CJ serves on Conservation committee for the Pope and Young Club and Board of Directors of the National Bowhunter Education Foundation (NBEF). All the scientific information presented during his talks are based on actual field research conducted by himself or other prominent wildlife biologists. CJ translates this biological information so everyone can understand and utilize the latest scientific results. Hunters that use these findings can readily adapt or modify their hunting techniques to harvest quality bucks. CJ’s seminars are data packed and will elevate even an experienced hunter’s savvy. mental health, nursing, and hospice. Although the program has a 10-member capacity, Fleck said she was pleased it started with a smaller group so that the feedback might be more meaningful. Prior to starting the program, GMTRC surveyed the local first-responder community to find out what daily struggles might be leading them to consider a new career path. “We found a lot of ties to mental health (and) burnout,” said Fleck, who noted that GMTRC responded with a pilot curriculum that discussed topics such as setting boundaries, encouraging healthy professional and personal relationships, and effective communication. “Individuals (in these fields) can feel very isolated with what they face and deal with daily,” noted Fleck, who added that activities related to self-talk, self-esteem, and positivity were included. E ach par ticipant was assigned a project horse, but the pairs were not chosen randomly. “Often when we introduce (participants), they find a natural and easy connection (with one horse) that is really organic,” said Fleck. “The horses kind of pick them.” As a participant works with a particular horse, a bond develops. “We did a lot of groundwork, which includes leading and learning different exercises to connect with the horse on the ground (rather than on horseback),” explained Fleck, who noted that grooming is part of the weekly routine because it provides “an initial connection time to be quiet and aware.” Other exercises were designed to coincide with the discussion topic. Skills challenges were also included. “The horses are really the teachers,” Fleck pointed out. “We just facilitate that communication back and forth.” Fleck said

of how each participant experienced the events differently. “We have a lot of sharing time,” she noted. Hospital social worker Brittany Hershey, who took part in the first program, said she was searching for a stress reliever that offered something different. “I was really looking for something where I could connect but not necessarily have to talk,” she stated. “I like to be able to sometimes not talk but still be able to work through emotions.” Hershey noted that the training she received helped her overcome any anxiety she felt about the large animals. “The education that (was) provided by the staff has given me much more confidence with being around (horses),” she said, pointing out that she loved getting to know the personality of her “quirky” project horse, Emmit. R u m m e l co n c u r re d , noting that working with a horse from the ground is a more personal experience. “Conveying nonverbal messages to (the horses) is so much more mentally and psychologically stimulating (than being on horseback),” she noted. “It’s a different kind of experience.” Organizers plan to offer the program at GMTRC several times during 2024. Fleck pointed out that the curriculum can be customized and that the organization hopes to serve EMTs, police, firefighters, and both active-duty and retired military personnel in the future. Open enrollment programs and programs for specific entities - such as the personnel from one fire company could be accommodated. Participants who wish to bring along a support person would be welcome to do so. More information about GMTRC may be found at http://greystonemanor trc.org.

Pe a r s o n , w h o i s a n award- winning singersong writer, will give a concert at the church, at 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, on Friday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. The concert will be free and open to the public. A freewill offering to benefit the summer youth mission trip will be received at the concert. Pearson recognized her love of reaching others through song at a young age when she soloed in church, but she pursued a career as an attorney with the federal government before giving in to the call to use her powerful vocals to connect with others. She is the recipient of a number of awards, including the 2 0 2 1 K e n n e d y C e n te r American College Theatre Festival’s Musical Theatre Intensive O utstanding Vocalist title and the 2018 ACHI Magazine Songstress of the Year award. According to CMBC p a s to r C h r i s L e n h a r t , Pearson will share some of her story during the concert. Stoltzfus reported that Pearson’s selections will include contemporary

worship songs along with love songs, since the concert is just a few days prior to Valentine’s Day. He also mentioned rhythm and blues music. “She may throw in some Broadway (songs),” added Stoltzfus, who noted that Pearson was excited to learn that funds raised at the concert would benefit a youth mission trip. “(Pearson) was thrilled,” stated Stoltzfus. “She checked out our website, and she loved the direction our church was going,” he added. Youth pastor Josiah Reimold said that the current plan is for up to 25 youths from the church to spend five days working with Hub 450 at 450 N. Prince St., Lancaster. “Hub 450 provides connections for refugees settling in Lancaster,” said Lenhart. Reimold noted that the work is being organized through Eastern Mennonite Missions and that the students will work with young children of refugees on English as a Second L ang ua ge skills.
