Joel Jakubowski, who became director at Revelations of Freedom Ministries (ROFM) in July 2018, had a personal stake in the choice of Stanley Praimnath as a speaker for the seventh annual ROFM banquet, to be held at Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl, on Thursday, March 21. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Jakubowski met Praimnath in 2003, when Jakubowski had been a student in Teen Challenge for about five months. “I was trying to figure out who God is,” said Jakubowski, who said that he came to the program as an argumentative atheist. When Praimnath spoke at a Teen Challenge chapel
gathering, Jakubowski and his fellow students were riveted by Praimnath’s tale of surviving the 9/11 World Trade Center attack. “When Stanley came and started to tell his story, you could hear a pin drop,” said Jakubowski. “He told his heroic and faithful (account of escaping) out of the offices that the plane actually hit.” Following the chapel meeting, Jakubowski introduced himself to Praimnath and shared his own story. “I said, ‘If your faith got you through (9/11), it can get me through Teen Challenge,’” said Jakubowski. “He said (that) I was absolutely right,” shared Jakubowski. “He said, ‘Stay the course.’” The pair stayed in touch over the years, and when Jakubowski was considering speakers, he contacted his friend. “I called Stanley See 9/11 Survivor pg 5

LMHS To Present “Bye Bye Birdie” Area Churches Plan Annual Sportsmen’s Banquet By Ann Mead Ash
Director Dean Sauder considered a number of plays before settling on “Bye Bye Birdie” for the Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) spring musical. Sauder noted that one reason for selecting the show was to contrast 2018’s “Wizard of Oz” production. “We are intentional about choosing shows from different eras to help give our students a rounded theater experience,” said Sauder. LMHS will present “Bye Bye Birdie” in the LMHS Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28; Friday, March 1; and Saturday, March 2. A matinee performance will be held at 2 p.m. on March 2. See “Bye Bye Birdie” pg 2

Kathleen Calix-Alvarado (left) will play Rosie opposite Javon Thomas (right) as Albert Peterson in the upcoming Lancaster Mennonite High School spring musical, “Bye Bye Birdie,” which will be presented at the school on Feb. 28 and March 1 and 2.
Jim Hertzler, chair of the committee of Ephrata- and Akron-area churches that are planning the group’s 15th annual sportsmen’s banquet, reached back into his own hunting history when discussing the topic of this year’s event. “(Speaker Steve Sorensen) will talk about hunting boots on the ground,” said Hertzler. “Not (hunting deer) from tree stands, but walking and stalking.” Hertzler noted that he has hunted deer from both locations. “I enjoy hunting from tree stands, but I didn’t always,” he said. “I used to walk and go slow and keep my eyes open, and it’s a different approach to deer hunting.” Last year, due to the demand for tickets, the event was expanded to two nights, and that format will be in place this year as well. The family-friendly banquet will be held on Thursday and Friday, March 7 and 8, at Yoder’s Restaurant, 14 Tower Road, New Holland. Doors See Sportsmen’s Banquet pg 7

“Bye Bye Birdie” from pg 1 “Birdie” is the story of Conrad Birdie, played by Noah Schnabel. When Birdie, a singer and teenage heartthrob, is drafted into the Army, his agent, Albert Peterson, played by Javon Thomas, and Peterson’s secretary and love interest, Rosie Alvarez, played by Kathleen Calix-Alvarado, concoct a scheme to turn the situation into a publicity coup by planning to have Birdie sing one final song to a female member of his fan club, accompanied by a “last kiss.” The song and subsequent pucker are to take place on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Enter teenager Kim MacAfee, played by Willa Beidler, who wins the competition. Harnish, and Doris MacAfee, played by Mikayla Beers, are not exactly thrilled at the prospect of their daughter kissing a rock ‘n’ roll star. “Birdie,” which is based loosely on Elvis Presley’s induction into the Army, is set in the late 1950s. While the story of Conrad and Kim plays out, Rosie is struggling to move forward in her relationship with Albert. The pair is impeded by Albert’s mother, Mae, played by Merry Yirga, who dislikes Rosie and continually takes steps to thwart the relationship. “It’s a challenge as Rosie to stay strong,” said CalixAlvarado of her role. “She does show her sensitive spots.” Sauder noted that the role of Rosie stands out in the show for a number of reasons. “Even as Albert keeps folding … and she’s being picked on by her future mother-in-law, she rises above it, and in the end she triumphs,” said Sauder. “There are not many shows from this era that have a woman (character) with that strength.” Beidler pointed out that performing from a script written for a different era can be a challenge. “We’re doing a show set in the 1950s in 2019,” she said. “There

are a lot of things said in the show that you cannot say now.” Sauder agreed, noting that gender roles that were assumed during that time period have changed drastically. The show is known for catchy tunes, and the cast members are looking forward to presenting the songs with dances choreographed by Katie Sina-Kindig. Students mention “Put on a Happy Face,” “Honestly Sincere,” “The Telephone Hour,” and “A Lot of Livin’ to Do” as standout numbers. Schnabel noted that he hopes
to see audiences enjoying the show. “With a musical like ‘Bye Bye Birdie,’ (you can) a bring your (children) and parents (because it’s) fun for the whole family,” he said, adding, “It’s fun for the cast (too).” Advance tickets for the play may be purchased at www.lancastermennonite.org under the Fine Arts tab or by calling 717740-2456 or emailing boxoffice@lancastermennonite.org. A discounted student price will be offered, and tickets to the matinee performance will also be discounted.

When Jaime Santiago, executive director and founder of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), heard about Billy Molls from a local construction company, he knew Molls had the right qualifications to speak at Restart’s annual sportsman banquet. “(Molls) takes people on deer hunts in Alaska,” explained Santiago. “He has become a believer, and he will share how God has used his experiences.”
Restart’s fourth sportsman banquet will be held on Wednesday, March 27, at Shady Maple Banquet Hall, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. In addition to Molls’ talk, both live and Chinese auctions will be held, and a number of door prizes will be given away. Molls grew up in Wisconsin, fishing, trapping, and hunting with his father and grandfathers. The experiences prepared him for exploring the wilds of Alaska.

Molls attended guide school in Montana and completed a two-year apprenticeship in the Alaskan bush to become a licensed Alaskan big-game hunting guide. For the past 20 years, sportsmen from around the world have followed him through some of the most remote regions of the largest state in pursuit of a variety of native game. Molls, who is married with three daughters, continues to appreciate the rewarding time he spends with nature. He is grateful to be able to share those experiences with others. Santiago noted that auction and door prize items worth a total of $22,000 have been gathered for the event. Among the live auction items will be a Mathews bow, a muzzle loader, and a deer shanty. The Chinese auction will feature a TenPoint crossbow, an Elite compound bow, and a Kids Package Carbon Express Blade Pro. Door prizes will include hunting and fishing gear and the grand prize of a 10 point Nitro crossbow. Santiago explained that the items will be sold or given away throughout the event. “We will sell a (live) auction item, then (announce) a Chinese auction item (winner), and then announce a door prize,” he said. Santiago will also give an update on the ministry, which strives to help men who have been traumatized and who have turned to abusing chemicals or developed other kinds of addictions. RTCM aims to support clients in finding healing and developing healthy coping mechanisms. “The purpose is to bring men out of their addiction and heal them from their trauma, so they can become productive citizens in the community,” said Santiago, who noted that by bringing a relationship with God into the students’ lives, the program aims to restore the men to their families. Santiago noted that he plans to have a program graduate share his story at the banquet. “When you see (a graduate share his testimony), you thank God for letting you have a small part in that,” he noted. Tickets are required for individuals to attend the banquet. Seating is limited, and tickets must be purchased by Friday, March 1. Those who would like to register to attend the banquet may call 717-3043291 or email officemanager@restart ministry.org. A freewill offering will be received at the event. Readers who would like to learn more about RTCM may visit www.restartministry.org. 9/11 Survivor from pg 1 without a lot of notice,” said Jakubowski. “I said, ‘The Lord put you on my heart (for this event). Are you available?’” Praimnath responded that he would make it work. “He is such a humble guy,” said Jakubowski. Praimnath was evacuated from his 81st-floor office in the South Tower of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, when Flight 11 struck the North Tower. When told by security that the South Tower was secured, he returned to his office in time to see United Airlines Flight 175 heading for his window. “He will vividly remind everyone of what we experienced as a nation and our resiliency,” said Jakubowski, who added that Prainmath will also expound on how God was his source of survival and rescue. ROFM is a faith-based, Christcentered discipleship program for men who struggle with addictions. Jakubowski said that some of ROFM’s current students will give their testimonies at the banquet, and students will perform a song or two. When Jakubowski joined ROFM in July 2018, the ministry was in the process of making a change by preparing to move to a former bank call center at 113 Rancks Church Road, Blue Ball. The location is currently in the process of being remodeled for the ministry. Currently, ROFM can house up to 15 men in buildings located along Route 23 in Blue Ball. The new building will be able to accommodate 50 men, and although ROFM may eventually house that many clients, it is not the initial goal of the move. Jakubowski will give an update on the status of the move, noting that ROFM hopes to have occupancy by March and to open a thrift store by late spring or early summer. The change will mean ROFM will need more volunteers, especially to help run the thrift store. “We are looking for volunteers for the thrift store (and to serve as) drivers, teachers, and mentors,” said Jakubowski. There is no charge to attend the banquet, but individuals who would like to attend are asked to register to attend by Thursday, March 14, by calling 717-3515680 or 717-673-2119 or emailing joel@rofm.org. Caleb Williams of Narvon is helping to design a life-saving device as his senior capstone project at Cedarville University. Williams, a senior mechanical engineering major, is working on the project with four other seniors. The students’ primary focus is the area of the neck that is above the clavicle (collarbone) and below the mandible (jaw). In severe traumatic injuries to this area, the common carotid artery and jugular veins bleed profusely. When these injuries are left untreated, the lack of blood flow to the brain proves fatal. Sufficient pressure must be applied to the injury, but if the correct amount of pressure is not applied at the right location, the neck laceration may continue to bleed or the airway may be constricted, leading to brain damage, suffocation and possibly death. The students’ finished product will most likely resemble three quarters of a rubberized doughnut that will be placed over the laceration to stop the bleeding. Attached to this “doughnut” will be an inflatable bladder or

Sorensen will discuss hunters who bring home especially large bucks and utilize a special test to help audience members discover the locations of the biggest whitetails. Sorensen is an award-winning outdoor writer whose column, “The Everyday Hunter,” appears in a number of western Pennsylvania newspapers. He is also a popular speaker who presents programs on wild turkey hunting and eastern coyote hunting, among others. Sorensen is also a believer in Christ, which is one reason he was chosen to speak at the event. “Our goal is to introduce people to Jesus Christ through their interest in the outdoors,” noted Hertzler, who added that Sorensen will end his talk with his personal testimony. According to Hertzler, about 14 vendors will be on hand with displays when the doors open. Most of the vendors represent local businesses that sell hunting and fishing equipment. One taxidermist will be on hand, and one vendor who sells jewelry will take part. “There are women who come to the meal, and (the jewelry) is something for them (to see),” said Hertzler, who added that husbands who attend sometimes purchase a piece of jewelry for their wives. The banquet is known for the

Door prizes, which are donated by local businesses, will be designated for junior hunters ages 8 to 16 or as elite prizes, which may be won by anyone in attendance. Elite prizes generally include rifles, muzzleloaders, and bows. About a dozen Ephrata and Akron churches are involved in organizing the event. A limited number of tickets are available for each evening. Tickets may be purchased for a per-person fee by calling 717-733-2797. Organizers request that tickets be purchased by Friday, March 1.

Terre Hill Boy Scout Troop 172’s Space Troopers patrol, including (from left) Jack Redcay, Hunter Weaver, Isaiah Hansen, (not pictured) Danya Rose and Blake Davis, took first place overall at this year’s Conestoga River District Klondike event at Camp Mack. Over the weekend of Jan. 11 to 13, Terre Hill Boy Scout Troop 172 participated in the 2019 Conestoga River District Klondike event at Camp Mack. The Conestoga River District is part of the Pennsylvania Dutch Council of Boy Scouts of America. A total of 23 patrols from 13 different area troops participated in the Klondike. Leading up to the weekend, Scouts prepared their gear and sled in anticipation of visiting 11 stations set up throughout the woods. The stations tested the Scouts on various skills and knowledge,
including fire building, first aid, knots, compass skills and teamwork. Scouts could earn up to 20 points at each station, along with bonus points for sleeping out overnight and turning in their score sheets early. Two patrols represented Terre Hill. The Space Troopers took first place overall in the competition, and the Space Invaders tied for 10th. has developed an understanding of DNA and how it is passed from generation to generation. With the advent of basic genetic testing available through companies like Ancestry.com and 23andMe.com, a whole new aspect of genealogy has opened up. “There are huge benefits of DNA testing, but they lie in the deeper testing - not the basic ethnicity testing - which can reveal relatives,” Martin said. “You can share family trees and see how you connect.” There are some myths about genetic testing, however, and Martin hopes to dispel them during his presentation “The New DNA Reality: Forging the Path Between Discovery and Privacy,” which he will give on Friday, March 29, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS), 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, as part of the 40th Lancaster Family History Conference. “Everyone assumes their DNA is private, but that’s not the case,” remarked Martin, conference committee chair. He explained that while a particular combination of DNA might be unique to a specific person, the components of those genes may be accessed through other avenues, as they come from their parents, who got their DNA from their respective parents, and so forth. “The way that we think about DNA is an illusion because nature does not work that way,” Martin said. During his presentation, Martin will discuss two recent cases in which DNA from genealogical sites helped law enforcement officers trace and confirm the identity of perpetrators of crimes committed long ago. Additionally, Martin will address the concept of ethnicity and the uncertainty of genetic testing for ethnicity. “It’s a false assumption that you can quantify ethnicity. Ethnicity is
Lancaster Family History Conference committee chair Darvin Martin (left) and member Gordon Reed hope folks interested in learning about their ancestry and other facets of genealogy will attend the 40th annual conference, which will be held from March 26 to 30. Early registration will close on Feb. 27. not just genetics; it’s also history and culture,” Martin asserted. Martin explained that because of the way genes are randomly distributed, a pair of biological siblings might test as having genetic markers similar to people in completely different parts of the world. One way in which testing is helpful, however, is in men from Western European backgrounds. By tracing Y chromosomes, it is possible to see how surnames have changed over time. Martin related a story about two family groups in different states that discovered they share a Y chromosome and thus a common ancestor. It turned out that the last name of Carpenter was the English translation of the original German surname of Zimmerman. Martin’s presentation may be attended in person, or folks may watch it online live or at a later date. There will be an array of other presentations, seminars, discussions, and field trips offered before and during the Lancaster Family History Conference. The conference will examine how legal records are a helpful resource for understanding the details of one’s
ancestors’ lives. Pennsylvania has a collection of legal records starting as early as 300 years ago. Genealogist Judy G. Russell will present the keynote address, “No Person Shall Gallop Horses in the Streets: Using Court Records to Tell the Stories of Our Ancestors’ Lives,” on Saturday, March 30. Russell has worked as a reporter, writer, legal investigator, defense attorney, federal prosecutor, and law editor, along with as an adjunct faculty member at Rutgers Law School. During the week of the conference, from Tuesday, March 26, to March 30, registrants may use the LMHS library and archives free of charge. The March 30 sessions will take place at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Early registration will end on Wednesday, Feb. 27. General registration will end on Wednesday, March 20. To register, readers may visit www.lmhs.org or call the LMHS at 717-393-9745. Registration for field trips and seminars is completed separately from the conference, but priority seating will be given to conference attendees.

United Way of Lancaster County is once again offering the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program to prepare federal, state and local income tax returns for free. United Way of Lancaster County’s VITA Program is one of more than 12,000 VITA programs across the country that the IRS relies on to help people file their taxes every year, completely free of charge. Last year, United Way of Lancaster County’s IRS-certified volunteers helped more than 10,000 individuals and families in
Lancaster County complete their tax returns. VITA saved Lancaster County residents more than $2.7 million in tax prep fees, and more than $12.4 million in refunds went into their bank accounts. VITA provides free tax preparation services, including federal, state and local returns, to taxpayers who make less than $62,000 and who live, work or go to school in Lancaster County. The volunteer tax preparers at United Way’s free tax preparation sites understand the 2018 TCJA (tax reform). They go through at least 40 hours
of training and are certified by the IRS. The purpose of the program is to provide customers with highquality, professional, personal service by trained volunteers who are equipped to identify tax refund opportunities for customers. The IRS announced that it would delay issuing refunds for taxpayers claiming the EITC and ACTC until Feb. 15. The law is designed to help the IRS find and stop fraud. However, the IRS notes that these refunds likely will not arrive in bank accounts or on debit cards until late February. Even though refunds may be delayed, taxpayers are still encouraged to file as early as possible. The county’s VITA sites began opening on Jan. 22. Sites include Community Action Partnership, 601 S.
