Presenting “Anastasia” BY ANN MEAD ASH

W

hen Monica DePaul, ar tistic director for Cavod T heatre, and other Cavod staff members considered musicals to perform, they did not realize immediately that “Anastasia” was a possibility. “We

“We tend to enjoy doing shows that are rooted in literature and history (because) the stories are so human and deep.” thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if we could do “Anastasia”?’” recalled DePaul. When Cavod production manager Bergen Sunday reported that the show would be released for production in late 2023, the group was thrilled. “The music is incredible,” said DePaul. “Anastasia - The Musical,” will be presented at the Cavod

Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, with a dinner theater at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 1. The show will also be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 8; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, March 2 and 9; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, March 3 and 10. T he show is based on the animated film released in 1997. It is a musical version of the

legend of the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia, played by Amanda Lewis as an adult and Violet Bartlett as a child. According to the story, Anastasia may have escaped and survived when her family was executed by revolutionaries in 1918. When young woman named Anya (Lewis) with amnesia seeks to discover her past, she

is persuaded by two con artists - Dmitry, played by Ric Weaver, and Vlad Popov, played by Josh Glacken, who hope to benefit from Anya’s resemblance to Anastasia by passing her off as the Grand Duchess to her paternal grandmother, Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, played by Joy Schaeffer. “Anastasia” will include a

segment of “Swan Lake” with dancers from Citylight Dance Theatre on pointe and Anna Riley dancing the part of Odette. DePaul referred to the story as historical fiction. “It has been proven Anastasia did not survive,” she noted, adding that she was intrigued by the show’s connection to history. “We tend to enjoy doing shows that are rooted in literature and history (because) the stories are so human and deep,” DePaul explained, adding that the message of hope in the show was also appealing. “(Audience members) find themselves on a journey and process and who she comes to be on the other side is inspiring,” she said. “I hope (attendees) leave with a sense of hope,” she said. “We need hope and magic.” The more than 25 musical numbers in “Anastasia” include solos and showstoppers that put the entire cast of 30 on stage. DePaul said that standout songs include “In My Dreams,” “Learn to Do It,” and “Once Upon a December,” See Cavod Theatre pg 5

Fred Hughes is the new director of the New Holland Band.

Fred Hughes, who became the new director of the New Holland Band on Jan. 1, does not know exactly when his father joined the band, but he knows how it happened, and he remembers pulling the wagon that held the bass drum in parades when he was still in the single digits. “(Former New Holland Band director) Sam (Zimmerman) heard (that my father) was a great musician and recruited him,” said Hughes, who referred to Zimmerman as a “great mentor.”

By the time Hughes was 12 years old, he was playing tuba alongside his father, having joined Local 294 of the American Federation of Musicians. Hughes experience in the band prepared him for a future in music. “It was through Sam’s foresight to start mentoring us young folks via getting Russ Sumpman (a local music teacher) in the band,” recalled Hughes, who said Sumpman brought his students along with him. “We had the opportunity to sit beside our teachers and play in this great band playing great band literature,” said Hughes, who added that the band would

of the First Army Band. In 1981, Hughes was sent to Korea, where he played with the Eighth Army Band in Seoul. He also played in jazz clubs there, recording six records before the age of 24. In 1985, following his stint in Seoul, he returned to Lancaster and worked with a jazz trio called Alternative, performing regularly at what was then the Treadway Resort Inn. In 1989, Hughes joined the Army’s touring jazz ensemble, called the Jazz Ambassadors, as a pianist. He toured the U.S. and the world. In 1996, he formed the Fred Hughes Trio, and the group played international festivals. He has served in a variety of other roles, including directing orchestras and presenting workshops and clinics. In 2019, he founded Jazz Alive, a nonprofit organization working to preserve jazz through a variety of concerts and educational activities. “We have been going into Oxford School District under the New Holland Band educational endowment,” said Hughes of the nonprofit. “This will be the third year that we go in to work with beginning students.” T he effor t is par t of Hughes’ desire to introd u ce yo u n g p e o p l e to specific types of music, something he also wants to see happen with the New Holland Band, as he steps into his new role. “For

me that’s the top goal - to expand our audience,” he said. “There are different ways to do that one step at a time.” Hughes’ first appearance as director will be at the band’s spring concert, which will be held Sunday, March 17, in the Good Shepherd Chapel at Lancaster Bible College, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster. Hughes also noted that this year, the band will give two concerts for the July Fourth holiday. The first is planned at The Barn at Paradise Station on Wednesday, July 3, where the band will accompany the singing group Perfect Harmony, and the second is the traditional concert in the New Holland Memorial Park on Thursday, July 4. The band will also hold its annual Christmas concert at DoubleTree Resort, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. A new concert will be the “Ar t of the March,” which will be held at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New

Holland, on Saturday, April 13. “ We will talk about why marches are unique to bands,” said Hughes. “We will talk about how and why the march was created.” Hughes added that practicing marches offers benefits to musical organizations. “When you play marches as a steady diet, because of the challenge, endurance, and technique, it makes the organization strong,” he said. Gish’s Furniture decided to celebrate its 20th anniversary by initiating a Giving Campaign for local nonprofits. The campaign ended in December 2023 and raised more than $32,000. According to Michael Gish, founder of the company, Gish’s Furniture started a one-month Giving Campaign at the beginning of 2023. It went so well that the company decided to wrap up the year in December with a second month of giving. The goal was $20,000 in keeping with the 20th anniversary of the company. Gish reported that for the first campaign, donations totaled $18,200. Then, this past December, $14,100 was added in donations, bringing the grand total to $32,300. The nonprofits that benefitted from the campaign were Pets for Vets, Hospice & Community Care of Lancaster, Water Street Mission and the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay. Gish’s Furniture has showrooms in Lancaster, Camp Hill, East Earl at the Shady Maple Complex, Cockeysville, Md., and a new location set to open in Kennett Square. The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development unveiled the centerpiece of its new physical therapy gym - the OASUS system. This ceiling-mounted harness system provides g re ate r f l e x i b i l i t y fo r pediatric physical therapy clients. It was specifically engineered to address a range of therapy goals. The OA SUS system provides physical therapists and clients with a dynamic and open area for therapy sessions, allowing children to move forward, backward, and side to side. This flexibility is crucial for addressing gross motor skill therapy goals such as learning to stand and balance independently, learning to walk unassisted by mobility aids, and learning to climb stairs safely. Unlike traditional treadmill-based systems, the OASUS harness system enables therapists to create more playful and fun sessions for each child’s unique needs, keeping the child engaged in the therapy process. Mounted directly into the ceiling of the new p hy s i c a l t h e ra p y g y m using long support rails and a system of steel rods, t h e OA S U S s y s t e m i s designed to ensure a safe and stable foundation for physical therapy sessions.

Students invited to enter art contest

The Shapiro Administration invites all first- through sixth-grade students in Pennsylvania to enter the 2024 Lyme Art Contest by creating a short video or poster focusing on the theme “Protect. Check. Remove.” The annual contest aims to help students, Scout troops, and community youth programs learn how to prevent Lyme disease by educating them about ticks, including where these creatures live, how to prevent bites, and how to remove ticks that do bite. Officials from the Departments of Health (DOH), Education (PDE), Environmental Protection (DEP), and Conser vation and Natural Resources (DCNR) encourage young students to participate in the contest and help raise awareness of Lyme disease. The deadline for entries is 5 p.m. on Friday, March 15. Contest information can be found at http://tinyurl .com/TickborneDiseaseArt Contest24.
