Going Above And Beyond For New Holland Historical Society Exceeds Fundraising Goal

ot quite a year ago, the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) undertook an effort to pay off the organization’s mortgage on the Kauffman Building, 201 to 207 E. Main St., New Holland, and complete repairs to the building’s exterior. With campaign organizer Larry Shirk at the helm, the organization set a goal of raising $250,000. As of January, NHAHS has exceeded that goal, raising nearly $280,000. These funds both satisfied the mortgage and covered the brickwork, which will be completed in the spring. Shirk reported that the money was raised with a capital campaign that included mailings to members and residents in two local ZIP codes, along with grants from the Ressler Mill Foundation and the Anne Brossman Sweigart Foundation. More than just a museum, the Kauffman Building holds a unique place in Lancaster County history as

N

the second-oldest building in the county that has been in continuous use since the 1700s. It is believed the building dates back to the 1780s, with additions constructed before 1795 and again in 1831. “The New Holland area has an amazing history, and we are blessed to now have a permanent place to preserve it,” wrote Shirk in a press release. “We could not have done this without the assistance of our friends and neighbors over the last year.” According to NHAHS chair Mike Ressler, the organization had planned to hold an open house reception to celebrate satisfying the mortgage in February, but now the museum will be closed until March due to COVID-19 concerns. According to Ressler, when the museum reopens, organizers hope to hold a celebration of owning the building and opening the newest exhibit, titled “New Holland Borough 1895 A New Era Begins.” “It’s really a combination of two exhibits,” See NHAHS pg 12

Jen West, program director for Girls on the Run (GOTR), is exuberant about the programming the 2022 Camp GOTR will offer to area girls entering third, fourth, or fifth grades by fall. “It opens possibilities for new careers for girls … where they can see past elementary school to what will be available for them (in the future),” said West. Several years ago, Ken Laudermilch, conductor of the New Holland Band, considered doing a concert featuring George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” as transcribed for wind band. The catch was that Laudermilch wanted the featured pianist to be his friend and fellow musician Dr. Ronald Matthews. Ronald Matthews

Camp GOTR will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day from Monday, June 13, through Friday, June 17, at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology Greiner Advanced Manufacturing Center, 599 Chesapeake St., Lancaster. Mornings will feature opportunities to delve into the GOTR curriculum designed to boost confidence and appreciation as campers write, create, discuss, and connect. In the afternoon, girls will participate in excursions focused on careers for women, including public safety, health and medicine, machine technology, and entertainment. Girls will meet mounted police, learn about robotic surgery and orthopedics, make a keychain in a machine shop, and visit a multiplex cinema. GOTR has partnered with Thaddeus Stevens, UPMC, and Penn Cinema to make these field trips possible. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for girls to experience GOTR curriculum while also exposing them to (future) careers they might not have considered,” said Katie Sandoe, GOTR executive director. “They can see themselves in those roles and (think about) what they could potentially become.”

Ryan has always been there to support his younger brother. “We have a lot of opportunity in the off-season for our young players to improve for next year,” continued the coach. “We hope the returning kids take advantage of that.” GIRLS’ BASKETBALL With their convincing 57-39 victory over Conestoga Valley on Friday night, February 11, the Spartans evened their record at 11-11, thus carrying a winning momentum into the District Three Class 5A playoffs. The Spartans, who finished 15th in the district power rankings, will battle Gettysburg on the road. The Warriors (17-4) come in as the second-seeded team. “We knew, going into Friday’s game that if we won, there was a 90 percent chance we would make districts,” said head coach Kevin Gensemer. “We played probably our best game of the year.” A fast start by the Spartans helped them hold off a 19-point fourth-quarter surge by the visiting Buckskins. Spot carried a 26-11 lead into the locker room at halftime and increased the lead to 39-20 after the third quarter. “We came out and played probably the best defense we’ve played and got a lot of points off turnovers,” Gensemer noted. “Everybody contributed.” The twosome of Erin Gonzalez and Taylor Soehner came through with 15 points each. Soehner hit two treys and went 7-for-8 at the free throw line. “Erin and Taylor both played well to get us in [district playoffs],” Gensemer said. Morgan Pavelik provided 11 points while Nicole Zeiset finished with nine. “It was probably the most balanced scoring we had all year,”

Students and their families were invited to Conestoga Christian School (CCS) on Feb. 5 for a Winter Carnival. This is the third time that CCS has hosted a Winter Carnival, although it was canceled in 2021 because of the pandemic. Attendees at this year’s event enjoyed snacks and interactive games and were also given an opportunity to visit with pets that were brought in by CCS families for a “puppy snuggles and kisses booth.” “There were fun games and activities for our preschool and elementary students and their friends,” explained Michelle Parris, CCS admissions director. “The Winter Carnival was created so our families and community could socialize and enjoy time together.” Attendees purchased tickets to participate in the various activities, which included a moon bounce, a cake walk, face painting, a basketball toss and a snowball toss. Other games reflected the winter theme, including Feed the Snowman, Arctic Bowling, Igloo Soccer and Polar Hockey.

Conestoga Christian School students were invited to throw pies at Ken Parris, head of school, during the Winter Carnival.

There was also a “pie in the face” station, where students could throw a cream pie, which was actually made of shaving cream. “Ken Parris, head of school, had a long line at his carnival booth, where students gave their tickets for a chance to hit him in the face with a cream pie,” Michelle noted. The puppy component of the carnival was new this year. Christina Kurtz brought her puppy, Kona, to the event. “As a parent of a (CCS) senior, it was so sweet to see all the elementary students and their families enjoying a See Carnival pg 12

Carnival from pg 8 morning of fun,” said Kurtz. “They loved holding and petting the dogs.” Members of the CCS National Honor Society worked at the event and ran the games as part of their commitment to complete service hours. The carnival was presented by the Junior Cougars. “Our school mascot is the Cougar, and the Junior Cougars are the elementary-level grades,” noted Michelle, “Our elementary principal, Susan Brenner, helped plan the event and also brought in her dog.” Also helping out with the planning was Deborah Kurtz, CCS events coordinator. While it was a social event, the Winter Carnival was also an opportunity for prospective families to visit the school. “It’s meant for our students, but they can bring friends, and we did have families visit that day who either wanted to learn more about the school or were interested for their children,” Michelle added. The event was documented in photos taken by CCS student Analiese Schreier for her independent photography class. Her photo album was posted on Feb. 11 at www.facebook.com/ conestogachristianschool. CCS, located at 2760 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown, offers a Christian educational program for students in prekindergarten through grade 12. To learn more, visit the aforementioned Facebook page or www.conestoga christian.net. To schedule a personal tour of the school, call Michelle at 610286-0353, ext. 402.

NHAHS from pg 1 explained board member Brian Frankhouser. “We have an exhibit celebrating the 125th anniversary of the incorporation of the Borough of New Holland that we finished just as COVID-19 hit.” Frankhouser added that the museum was closed for quite some time due to COVID-19 restrictions, meaning not very many people were able to experience the exhibit. “So we’re not taking that down, but we are adding something for Stauffer’s Drug Store because they are celebrating their 125th anniversary this year,” Frankhouser added. He went on to explain that the Stauffer family came to New Holland in 1897. “There have been five generations of Stauffer men who kept the business going,” said Frankhouser. He added that patriarch William M. Stauffer was also a photographer and that many of his photos will be on display along with the history of Stauffer’s Drug Store. “Stauffer’s was actually (first located in the Kauffman) Building and moved to their present location in 1913,” said Frankhouser. NHAHS was founded in 2005 with the goal of collecting, organizing, and preserving information and historical materials relevant to the New Holland area.
