Seminary Bestows Catalytic Church Award On ECC BY ANN MEAD ASH
When Kevin Eshleman, lead pastor of Ephrata Community Church (ECC), first became a student at Evangelical Seminary in Myerstown in 2007, he was impressed with the caliber of the institution and the quality of the professors. “It’s a great place,” said Eshleman. “The professors are godly people who

More Than A Ride Volunteers Sought To Keep Transportation Ministry Moving BY ANN MEAD ASH
s case and resource manager at CrossNet Ministries in New Holland, Aryn Burda has been overseeing the organization’s transportation ministry for some time, and she knows the valuable role volunteers play in helping participants reach appointments. “All our volunteers are a significant part of the story here at CrossNet,” said Burda. Burda noted that by developing relationships with those they transport, drivers offer more than just a ride to participants. “(Our drivers) have opportunities to connect with individuals and families by providing transportation, but also to hear about their day and how their appointments went,” shared Burda. “They have conversations. It’s more than just a transportation request; it is an opportunity to invest and be a light.” The transportation ministry was formed in March 2018, when CrossNet first partnered with the

Children must be accompanied by a guardian. Since the initial COVID-19 shutdown in 2020, rides for children have been provided by CrossNet staff and volunteers to protect the older Kiwanis Club members who were driving previously. One way area children benefit from the ministry is through vision examinations and/or glasses provided by the Empower the Cross Fund. Qualifying children may be served by a partnership between CrossNet
and Optometric Associates in New Holland, and vouchers may be provided for certain types of eyewear or for free exams and glasses. A second group of volunteers provides rides for adults. Ride requests from women are sent to female drivers and for men to male drivers. Volunteers for both adults and children have had their driving records checked, and they have undergone all the required clearances. Since the pandemic began, the transportation ministry has been providing about five rides per month, with only a few drivers at the wheel. “We are a little low on volunteers,” noted Burda. “COVID-19 has impacted that pretty significantly.” To be sure volunteer drivers and their passengers are safe, CrossNet is following protocols that require any participant above 2 years of age to wear a mask. Burda added that drivers are verified with regard to exposure or symptoms. “The volunteer must wipe down the van (or his or her own car) before and after a participant (is transported),” said Burda. “We are not transporting

love the Lord and have dug deep into the Scriptures in their specific areas of expertise.” Eshleman wondered if there might be a way for the seminary to share the wisdom of its teachers with members of the community and church leaders who are looking to deepen their own knowledge of God. His answer, the creation of the Institute for Christian Learning (ICL) at ECC, resulted in Evangelical Seminary presenting the Catalytic Church Award to ECC at the end of 2020. The award would have typically been presented at the school’s fall banquet. But when the banquet was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, Ann Steel, Evangelical Seminary executive director of institutional advancement, traveled to ECC, 70 Clay School Road, Ephrata, to present the award in person.

After nearly 40 years helming the church, senior pastors Lester and Erma Zimmerman retired, and Brian Coles became the new lead pastor. Brian and his wife, Tracy, first joined the Petra ministerial staff as student ministries pastors in 2016. Tracy now serves as Petra’s local outreach pastor, and Lester will move into an expanded

role providing leadership and oversight to the Hopewell Network of Churches to which Petra belongs. Noting Petra’s long history in New Holland, Brian, who grew up in Phoenixville, referred to the church’s initial service in a local fire hall in January of 1983, which attracted between 50 and 80 people. The service was the beginning of a journey of growth and commitment. “The storyline of Petra is the story of a changing church,” said Brian. “They were changing, moving, and evolving for 38 years.” That openness to growth, Brian pointed out has resulted in a well-grounded entity. “The interesting thing about Petra is that it is such a stable piece of the local community,” he noted. “It is an honor being involved in that.” Brian and Tracy, who is originally from the Williamsburg area, met while both were attending the University of Valley Forge located in Phoenixville. Brian earned a degree in pastoral counseling there, while Tracy’s degree is in elementary education. “Our first pastoral role was in Moorestown, N.J., at Maranatha Christian Fellowship,” said Brian. The couple served the independent church from 2008 until 2016. Gradually, Brian and Tracy felt God moving them in a new direction. “We both sensed it was time for us to transition from our previous church,” said Brian, who noted that the couple began the interview process, completing their assignment in Moorestown only a few days before beginning work at Petra. After relocating to Brownstown, they began overseeing the middle school and high school ministries at Petra, soon dividing the middle school program into sections for fifth and sixth grades and seventh and eighth grades and creating a young adult ministry. “The Lord was really blessing what we were doing, and we were growing and enjoying the community here,” said Brian, who added, “We fell in love with the area and the people of the church.” Brian and Tracy were unaware that Petra’s leadership was thinking about succession when they arrived, but when the conversation about succession started, Brian and Tracy were aware of God’s leading. “We are kind of holding open our hands and saying, ‘Lord what do you want for this next season of ministry for Petra?’” Brian said, adding that pastors Lester and Erma are passing a solid legacy to their successors. “(Petra has) such a rich heritage, and we are excited to build on that,” he said, noting that emphasis will remain on healing and other hallmarks of the church’s mission. “Those are parts of our DNA,” said Brian. “We believe in making an investment in what we are and expanding out in directions God gives us.” Readers who would like to know more about Petra Church may visit www.petra.church or call 717-354-5394.

“We knew this would be the safest plan, and we’re excited about it,” said Meredith Dahl, executive director of CrossNet Ministries in New Holland, of the upcoming banquet, which will feature Scott Hamilton. The banquet will be held in a hybrid format - an inperson event at Warehouse 100 on Franklin Street, New Holland, and livestreamed to watch parties. Watch parties will include a family-style meal. Those with access to Facebook will be able to watch free. The banquet will be held on Tuesday, March 30. Those purchasing the virtual option may pick up food at the Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl, in a drive-through format starting at 5 p.m. At 7 p.m., the livestream event will start via a link for those who purchased a meal or by Facebook. Hamilton has won 70 titles, awards, and honors, and he has been inducted into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame. He first captured the world’s attention in 1984 with his Olympic gold medal performance in Sarajevo. He is the author of three books and is a figure skating commentator. Hamilton lost his mother to cancer and later became a cancer survivor himself. He responded to those challenges by launching the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation. He makes his home with his wife, Tracie, and four children outside Nashville. “Hamilton will deliver a message of encouragement and hope,” said Dahl. “He will share some of his story.” Dahl, who will serve as master of ceremonies with Carl Edwards, director of development and ministries with CrossNet Ministries, will take questions from Facebook viewers as well as from the floor during a question-andanswer period with Hamilton. In addition, Dahl and Edwards will introduce two videos - one depicting the changed life of a local student and the
other highlighting CrossNet’s housing program. Dahl noted that the organizations has recently purchased a building on Main Street in New Holland that will be used to provide housing, along with two other local facilities. Those opting to purchase one or several takeout meals for the event will receive selections of herb baked chicken, slow-roasted tender beef, green bean almandine, mashed potatoes, tossed salad, pasta salad, rolls and butter, iced tea, coffee and water, and apple pie. Plastic plates, plasticware, and napkins will also be included, along with a small gift. Dahl noted there will be other surprises for those holding catered watch parties. “We are trying to make it as much fun as we can,” said Dahl. “Our theme is ‘Togetherness,’” noted Dahl. “Even though we can’t be together, we can watch and celebrate what God has done this past year together. We can’t do this without the community, so there is the idea of togetherness and lives are changed.” A freewill offering is always an

Lady Spartans Win Five of Last Six Games
The Garden Spot girls’ basketball team wrapped up the regular season with three consecutive victories, posting a 5-12 mark for the year. For a team that started 0-11, winning five out of six to end the year was a very positive takeaway for head coach Kevin Gensemer.

Taylor Soehner grabs a rebound in Garden Spot’s 6451, nonleague victory at Donegal last Tuesday.
“It has been a great turnaround for the kids,” he said. “They could have quit. Won five of their last six. I’m extremely proud of these kids.” In the non-league games to close out the season, the Spartans defeated Northern Lebanon on Friday, February 19, followed by victories over Lebanon and Donegal. The Spartans showed resilience in their 45-42 victory over Northern Lebanon, coming back from a 35-29 deficit at the end of three quarters. The Vikings led 25-17 at the half, but the Spartans chipped away at the lead until their huge 16-7 run in the final period. “We were losing the entire game,” Gensemer recalled. “We came alive in the second half and outscored them 16-7 in the fourth quarter.” Taylor Soehner finished with a team-high 19 points for Spot while Erin Gonzalez scored seven. Soehner also grabbed eight rebounds. “That was probably one of our most solid performances,” Gensemer said. The Vikings’ Ashlyn Messinger scored a game-high 22.
“Avery Stauffer had a great game,” Gensemer added. “We put her on their best player Messinger. She did not have any points in the fourth quarter. That was a huge difference. “Caroline Martin also did a good job for us defensively,” added the coach. Another close game followed in a mid-day Saturday clash at New Holland. And again, the Spartans put up 16 fourth-quarter points to seal a victory, this time over the Cedars. With the score tied 32-32, the Spartans outscored the visitors 16-11 in the final period for a 48-43 win. “We came out flat after playing the night before,” Gensemer said. “We didn’t have our legs early on. “Fourth quarter again, we made some shots and some foul shots down the stretch,” he added. Soehner put up eight baskets and went 2-for-3 at the foul line for her team-high 18 points. Gonzalez poured in 15, including a threepoint field goal. Caroline Martin and Nicole Zeiset each scored five points. “Taylor had 14 of her points in the first half; Erin scored 13 of her 15 in the second half,” Gensemer noted.

The one-point loss at home was a Saturday afternoon league game. The Pioneers trailed 40-36 heading into the fourth quarter but pulled off the victory. Martin and Brendan Weaver scored 13 and 10, respectively, for Garden Spot. The Spartan’s top scorers combined for five treys in addition to more by Jonathan Vega, who finished with eight points. Sharp finished with eight points as well. Cocalico kept Garden Spot’s offense in check in the 47-35 win at New Holland on Monday. Sharp finished with a game-high 14, including two treys. Martin and Dylan Nolt each scored six points.

In the consolation rounds, Hahn pinned Eddie Nephtali of Lebanon in 34 seconds and had a second-period pin in the third-place match, defeating Dean Houser of Daniel Boone. A close 8-7 loss was the only blemish on Casey’s day at Governor Mifflin. Following a pin in the first round, he lost the close decision to Stephen Spitko, who improved to 14-0. In the consis, Casey claimed a first-period pin (Cocalico’s Landon Eberly) and faced Taylor Gehman his opening-round opponent - a second time. He defeated the Cedar Crest adversary in a 12-3 major decision. Tyler Hurst had a remarkable pin in the first round of the 189-pound consolations. Following a fall with one second left in the first period of the opening round, Hurst broke out with a pin in 19 seconds. His run was stopped in the second round of the consis on a fall. Mason Musser (215) fell to eventual champ Josh Harkness of Wilson but came back to pin Conrad Weiser’s Manny Rodriguez before bowing out on a fall himself. Aaron Martin (145) sandwiched in a pin between his two defeats on the day. BOYS’ BASKETBALL With a heartbreaking 54-53 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg and a 47-35 loss to Cocalico, the Garden Spot boys’ basketball team ended its season at 5-11 (2-6 league). Prior to the two Section Three defeats, the Spartans had claimed that fifth victory of the year in a non-league home game with Northern Lebanon on Friday, February 19. In the 53-42 win, Jess Martin, who scored 15 points, and Joseph Sharp (13 pts) led the Spartans’ offense. Martin nailed a pair of treys. Garden Spot led by five at halftime and poured it on in the final period with a 17-11 run.

Coming out of the locker room to start the second half at Donegal, the Spartans outscored the Indians 38-24 enroute to a 64-51 win. Gonzalez was the leading scorer with 23 points, making 10-of-12 foul shots and hitting three jumpers from three-point range. Soehner was 11-of-12 on free throws and finished with 17 points. Morgan Pavelik scored 11. “We made 12-of-14 foul shots in the fourth quarter,” Gensemer noted. “That kind of iced it for us. “Morgan Pavelik had nine of her 11 points in the second half. As a freshman she had a good year. She’s one of the starters I’m excited to see returning next year.” WRESTLING In the District Three Class 3A wrestling sectionals, the Spartans traveled to Governor Mifflin for the section 2 championships. Garrett Gehr suffered his first loss of the year in the title match of the 132-pound weight class to earn second place while Dustin Swanson took the 285-pound championship with three decisive pins on the day. In addition, Mason Casey claimed third place at 126. Adam Hahn came on strong through the brackets to take third in the 106-weight class. Swanson pinned Noah Roehm of Twin Valley in only 35 seconds to start his day. He needed 1:01 to pin Ryan Peterson of Exeter, earning gold with a first-period pin against Colin Leahy of Daniel Boone. Gehr entered the tournament with a 20-0 record. He pinned Tristan Mellinger of Ephrata and registered a second pin to earn a spot in the title bout. Griffin Gonzalez of Lebanon improved his record to 26-1 with a tough 7-4 decision over Gehr. Hahn’s journey to third place began with a solid 2-0 decision against Oley Valley’s Vinny Dick. Hahn fought hard but lost a 3-0 decision to eventual 106-pound champ James Garcia of Wilson.

with His purposes or not.” Cahn is also the head of Hope of the World ministry, and he leads the Jerusalem Center/Beth Israel in Wayne, N.J. Dayspring events manager Lisa Becker said she believes the pair will present an important perspective. “We are beginning to see the stirrings of an awakening, and we feel the Lord has presented us with this opportunity to breathe into that,” she shared, noting that as author of “If You Can Keep It,” which explores the roots of the republic, Metaxas has an understanding of the founding of America on biblical values. Becker said she is looking forward to hearing him interview Cahn, based on the historical perspective Cahn has presented. Becker said the interview format was a decision inspired by the Holy Spirit. A board, made up of parents of Dayspring students and supporters of Dayspring’s mission, prays yearly for inspiration for speakers. “We set our hearts for the Lord and seek Him,” said Becker. “The combination of these two speakers came from one of our team members, and it was really divine inspiration.” Myers confirmed the importance of prayer to the foundation of the

chosen to change its presentation format from individual speakers to an in-depth interview between two well-known authors. “Our events have always had a strong spiritual foundation, but we really sensed that the Lord was taking the lid off that this year,” said Dayspring headmaster Mike Myers. “The focus will truly be on revival for America.” Remember America, which will feature author and radio host Eric Metaxas interviewing pastor and author Jonathan Cahn, will be held on Saturday, May 1, at the Lancaster County Convention Center. Tickets to the livestreamed event are available on a pay-what-you-can basis. Metaxas, the author of “Bonhoeffer,” “Amazing Grace,” and “Martin Luther,” is the host of the Eric Metaxas Radio Show and the creator of “Socrates in the City” events. Cahn is the author of “The Harbinger,” which compares the post-9/11 United States to ancient Israel, among other books. “(Cahn’s) books look at the biblical pattern the nations go through,” said Myers. “(The book of) Jeremiah (says that) ... ballet, hip-hop, and acrobatics. Performances will take place at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 6, and at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 7, at Cavod Theatre, 665 W. Main St., New Holland. Each piece of repertoire is original and set to an eclectic mix of music. Several performers will also share personal life stories that connect to themes portrayed throughout the dances. Certain pieces share a story, such as “God Only Knows,” a piece sharing the pain and fear a woman has gone through and how only God fully understands and can bring her hope. Others are more conceptual, such as “I Am,” which depicts the bondage that people have with different inner struggles and how to find hope and true identity. Citylight Dance Theatre is a contemporary-based dance ministry company of Cavod Theatre seeking to display the glory of God through dance and the arts. Carrie Johnson, executive director with Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster, wants to make it clear that the program is open to all girls in the age groups it serves. “Any girl can participate,” said Johnson. “We want to remove all limitations, whether financial, physical, or emotional. We want to remove those so that any girl can benefit.” In accordance with that goal, the spring 2021 program has been changed to accommodate COVID-19 restrictions. “ We’ve adapted our program to make it totally safe and flexible for girls and coaches,” explained program director Jennifer West, who noted that the organization allows participants to connect with their friends in person or virtually. A new virtual curriculum was written to match in-person lessons, and the program has eliminated shared materials by providing each girl with her own journals, hand sanitizer, and a cinch sack for storage. Masking and social distancing in compliance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines are followed. Team members meet in person when they can, at their school if possible, or in parks, at churches, or in community buildings. West explained that if schools close, a virtual practice can be held, with the lesson presented virtually. West stated that what has not changed is the lesson content. GOTR’s goals are to promote good choices for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living among girls. “They still get the same great lessons about practicing empathy and standing up for themselves and others, and we still take part in a community impact project,” shared West.
GOTR staff members are looking for places for students to meet and are also seeking volunteer team coaches, which are essential to the program. “It’s a unique mentoring opportunity,” said Johnson, who added that the girls who participate are not the only ones who benefit. “It changes a coach’s life,” she noted. West pointed out that coaches need not be runners. “Men, women, college students, and high school students (can be coaches),” said West, who added that having a heart to help girls grow up with self-esteem is key. “You have to have a desire to help the girls and have meaningful conversations,” explained West. “Be a positive role model, be silly, and play fun games - that’s what our coaches do.” West added that training materials for volunteer coaches are online and self-paced. “We provide the curriculum, all the materials, and support to get them set up for a successful season,” she stated. Johnson added that girls are especially in need of GOTR programming during these unusual times. “Seventy-nine percent of our girls

A Woman’s Concern, a local pregnancy resource center, has announced it is partnering with Pennsylvania state-funded organization Real Alternatives, whose mission is to deliver pregnancy and parenting support services throughout the state. This partnership not only allows A Woman’s Concern to receive reimbursement funding for many of the free services it offers, but it also allows the two organizations to advertise together to ensure all women have access to the free statefunded services available to them. For the past several years, the two charitable organizations have worked together to advertise these services on local billboards and buses. Services available through A Woman’s Concern include pregnancy testing, ultrasound scans, parenting classes, and help with baby items. COVID-19 health and safety measures are in place.
