“We think it’s important for people to know about (human) trafficking and to know it happens right here in Lancaster County,” said Janelle Esbenshade, director of development with North Star Initiative, “with the hope that once they understand … if they come in contact with (someone who is being trafficked), they will be educated enough to know what to do.” To help make community members aware of the signs of trafficking, North Star Initiative will hold an awareness event, Welcome to the Battle, at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, on Friday, March 19. The event, which will feature a panel discussion, will begin at 6 p.m. Tickets, which are limited, may be purchased up until the day of the event. When Ease the Burden (ETB) was founded in 2019, the organization sought to help fill financial gaps for families throughout Lancaster County. In the few years since, however, ETB board members have decided to partner with educators in a pilot program to help area children. They formed a
focus, the idea of giving back to the community will be part of ETB’s DNA. “We really wanted to emphasize community service,” High stated, noting that school staff members will organize community service activities in exchange for ETB funds. “So, you might have a thirdgrade teacher who would say, ‘Let’s take a Saturday afternoon to clean the park,’” explained High, who added that in return the class would receive an item that meets an educational need. When the recipient is an individual child, ETB will take steps to protect the anonymity of the student. Founder Mindy Lapp pointed to a school play as an example. “Due to the pandemic, the booster clubs don’t have as much money,” she said, adding that all the students in a cast would like T-shirts, but not every child’s family can afford one. “(Through ETB), the whole cast could (perform) community service, and they would all get T-shirts,” she said. Participants Invited To Move For Life BY CATHY MOLITORIS
For 35 years, Align Life Ministries has been holding an annual Walk Run for Life fundraiser. This year, the organization formerly known as Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services will hold an expanded event called Move for Life: Walk Run Plus. An in-person event will be held on Saturday, May 8, at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. The fundraiser also
features a virtual option for participation. “The in-person event will offer a 5K run and 1-mile walk simultaneously, starting at 9 a.m.,” said Heather Muncy, events director for Align Life Ministries. “If an individual or team prefers to participate virtually, they can choose their own safe, healthy, fun activity anytime between now and May 8.” For example, participants may choose to walk, run or even jump rope. The virtual

component began last year, Muncy said, when the organization had to shift away from an in-person fundraiser due to the pandemic. “Participants decided to jump rope, dunk basketballs, take family hikes, bicycle rides, Frisbee, golf, run, walk … the possibilities were endless,” she recalled. “We then realized the opportunity to expand our event in general to include a virtual - or ‘plus’ option.” Participants can decide the length and time of their activity, she explained, and then submit a photo or short video to show what they did. They can also plan to attend the in-person event. “Those who are participating virtually can join us on May 8 for a grand celebration and pick up their prizes at the same time,” Muncy stated. The in-person event will feature a family-friendly walk and chip-timed 5K run as well as free Kids’ Zones with live entertainment, interactive inflatables, face painting, snow cones and more. Move for Life is an important event for the organization, Muncy noted, adding that it not only helps further

the mission of promoting the sacredness of life, but it also helps raise funds to serve more people in need. “It is our biggest fundraising event, providing 15% of our annual budgeted income,” she stated. She encourages anyone to participate in the Move for Life, whether virtually or in person. “If you’re looking for ways to put your life-affirming beliefs into action and truly help your local community, please join us,” she remarked. “The funds you raise - whether it’s $50 or $5,000 - all are used to meet the immediate needs of the pregnant, parenting and postabortive clients we serve. Your efforts help point people to Jesus. Plus, you get to enjoy a big celebration party with others who share your values in honoring God’s gift of life.” To learn more about Move for Life: Walk Run Plus or to register, readers may visit www.AlignLifeMinistries.org, contact hmuncy@alignlife ministries.org or call 717274-5128, ext. 315.

LCCD To Grant Scholarships
North Star from pg 1
Panelists who are lined up to take part are Heather Castellino, Pennsylvania deputy attorney general; Derek Thompson, founder of Abolition Men; Brad Ortenzi, retired police officer and eastern USA regional director of Zoe International; and Liz Nolan, education specialist and licensed professional counselor for North Star Initiative. A surprise guest will also join the discussion. The event will include desserts provided by Zig’s Bakery and Shady Maple. Attendees will be asked to follow Petra’s COVID-19 guidelines, including wearing masks. According to Esbenshade, the forum is designed to educate by posing questions to the panel about human trafficking, such as, “ What is (human) trafficking?” “Who are the victims of this crime?” and “What can you do to get involved?” Esbenshade noted that runaways and homeless people are the main two groups of people who are preyed upon by traffickers. Trafficking that occurs in Lancaster County is often related to the network of highways that converge here. “We are a pass-through state,” explained Esbenshade, who noted that roads from New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia come through Lancaster, York, and Harrisburg to Baltimore and Washington, D.C. North Star operates The Harbor, a place where survivors of trafficking can experience physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual care and support in a Christ-centered program. “The Harbor focuses on restoration and re-entry, coordinating the services needed to address physical, mental, legal, educational, and other issues relating to the time spent in the hands

Esbenshade said that the program is implemented in a number of phases, beginning with an assessment and orientation. “We go over goals and how we can best help (a woman),” explained Esbenshade. “We tailor the curriculum to each individual.” The program includes a focus on trauma and drug and alcohol addiction, along with life skills training. During later phases of the program, the resident will work or attend school. Readers who would like to attend Welcome to the Battle may visit www.northstar initiative.org and click on “Events.”

ICL has now offered classes in both live and livestreamed configurations for two semesters. “What we learned was that people were very much hungry for (this knowledge),” shared Eshleman, who credits Matt Swords, pastor of discipleship and young adults, with implementing the plan for ICL. Eshleman added that it has not only been ECC members taking part in the classes, but interested learners from a number of area churches. “Many people approached me and thanked me

might be a way for the seminary to share the wisdom of its teachers with members of the community and church leaders who are looking to deepen their own knowledge of God. His answer, the creation of the Institute for Christian Learning (ICL) at ECC, resulted in Evangelical Seminary presenting the Catalytic Church Award to ECC at the end of 2020. The award would have typically been presented at the school’s fall banquet. But when the banquet was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, Ann Steel, Evangelical Seminary executive director of institutional advancement, traveled to ECC, 70 Clay School Road, Ephrata, to present the award in person. ICL was born of Eshleman asking the question, “How can we take these (professors), who are in a graduate setting, and actually bring some of their materials to a broader audience?” He noted that he was thinking that a number of area residents, ranging from local church leaders looking for refinement to pastors who need refresher courses, might be

Women’s Group Completes Comforters, Kit Bags Mock Trial Championships Slated
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Members of Neighbors Caring and Sharing, a women’s group that meets weekly at Conestoga Mennonite Church in Morgantown, gathered on March 2 to knot comforters and complete drawstring kit bags for the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), a Christian relief organization. In preparation for the community service project, sisters Krista Petersheim and Carmen Weber provided nearly completed comforters to the group. The blankets, which consisted of a piece of material on top, batting in the middle and more fabric on the back, were knotted together by the women, who used heavy thread to knot the three layers of fabric together to make the final quilted product. During the course of the recent meeting, the women knotted eight comforters. Additionally, the women added drawstrings to small bags made by Weber, which will be filled with various items before being shipped out of the country. Attendees used a safety pin to guide the strings through the top of the bags to form the drawstring. “They are used for school kits, baby kits, sewing kits or health kits,” said Tina Essick, program chair for the Neighbors group. “MCC either fills them or other groups fill them, and they ship them to where there is a need.” Essick noted that the comforters are used by the recipients to keep warm or as room dividers for refugees who live in tents. They also go to sites of natural disasters both in the United States and worldwide. The comforters and the bags were made from leftover fabric.
Weber pointed to one particularly colorful quilt with many patches, describing it as “a temper tantrum in a fabric shop.” “I repurpose (material) to keep it out of the landfills. I don’t cut portions of brand-new fabric. I am using scraps that nobody knows what to do with,” said Weber. “I get little pieces given to me and I cut them and repurpose them.” She noted that one of the comforters was made from medical scrubs. “The scrubs were in really excellent shape and they were donated (to a thrift store) and they were not

going to sell,” Weber noted. “(Scrubs) are made of poly cotton fabric that wears like iron, so we used them to make a quilt.” Now in its 35th year, Neighbors Caring and Sharing meets on Tuesdays from September through June. This year, meetings require attendees to wear masks and be socially distant. The meetings begin with refreshments and a prayer time, followed by a guest speaker or special activity. Programs and child care are offered free of charge, but donations are welcome. When
a craft is the focus of the meeting, registration is required and a small fee is charged to cover the cost of supplies. Conestoga Mennonite Church is located at 2779 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown. The Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) Statewide High School Mock Trial Competition will be held virtually this year, with 233 teams from 199 high schools across Pennsylvania set to compete in the district and regional levels. Sponsored by the PBA Young Lawyers Division, Pennsylvania’s mock trial program is now in its 38th year and is one of the largest in the nation. During the competition, eight-member student teams are given the opportunity to argue both sides of the case before a judge. The students, who play the roles of lawyers, witnesses, plaintiffs, and defendants, are assisted by teacher coaches and lawyer advisers in preparing for competition. Lawyers and community leaders serve as jurors and sometimes judges for the mock trials. The juries determine the winners in each trial based on the teams’ abilities to prepare their cases, present arguments, and follow court rules.
