Sweet Pea Plans First Fundraising Skate CPYU To Hold Annual Banquet By Ann Mead Ash

Stephanie Paige Cole, founder of Sweet Pea Project, an organization that offers comfort and support to families that have experienced the death of a baby, wanted to hold a fundraiser that would be inclusive of the entire community. “Our board members … were thinking of things our children like to do that would be a fun way to get the community involved,” said Cole. After a little brainstorming, the group decided to hold the first Sweet Pea Skate at The Castle Roller Skating, 1400 Elm Ave., Lancaster, on Saturday, April 4. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and a special low admission price will be charged until 7:30 p.m. All funds raised during that time period will benefit Sweet Pea. After 7:30 p.m., a higher admission will be charged. There will be a separate fee to rent skates. The event will end at 10 p.m. See Sweet Pea pg 3

Organizers of the first Sweet Pea Skate, who are looking forward to seeing families at the event at The Castle Roller Skating on April 4, include (from left) Beth Gauthier, Stephanie Cole, and Nicole Vasquez.

MTEF Breakfast To Focus On Trauma-Informed Care By Ann Mead Ash

According to Tammi Fahrney, assistant director of the Manheim Township Education Foundation (MTEF), it is one of the goals of the Manheim Township School District to encourage positive behavior intervention and support, and the topic of this year’s MTEF Education Forecast Breakfast fits right in with that goal. “We are talking about the value of trauma-informed care and wellness in schools and the workforce,” explained Fahrney, who added that the topic is trending in education, but that the information is also important to the workforce and the community. See Breakfast pg 12

Attorney William Zee will serve as keynote speaker at the 2020 Manheim Township Education Foundation Education Forecast Breakfast to be held at Lancaster Country Club on April 16 beginning at 7 a.m. The topic of this year’s breakfast will be “Trauma-Informed Care.”

Cole and the other organizers hope to have up to a dozen prizes donated by local businesses to give away during the event. So far, a sheet cake, a gift card for ice cream, a basket of prizes, a three-month athletic center subscription, and gift certificates to local restaurants are among the prizes. In addition, the rink will give away prizes, such as a party at the rink, as part of its normal activities. Funds raised by the event will help to support Sweet Pea’s 10th annual Sisters and Brothers Picnic, which will be held on Saturday, June 6, at Dutch Wonderland. The event is for children who had a sibling who was lost during pregnancy or infancy. Parents are invited to bring their surviving and subsequent children. “The picnic includes parking, free admission, pizza, and a sundae bar,” said Cole. A year ago, Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church member Jenni Simmons conceived the idea of holding a yard sale in a revelation she refers to as a “God moment.” Simmons partnered with fellow church member Lorin Wortel, and the two worked with others in the congregation to hold the first indoor yard sale. The successful sale raised more than $8,000 toward replacing the roof on the nearly 300-year-old church. This year, the large stained glass window on the north side of the sanctuary is in need of restoration, and Simmons and Wortel have partnered again to organize the second indoor yard sale to be held at the church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Friday, March 20, from 3 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 21, from 7 a.m. to noon. This year, the organizing committee has gathered a number of collectibles, such as Hess trucks with and without original boxes. Household items that will be offered for sale include pewter, solid brass lamps, picture frames, pots and pans, decorative pillows, bedding, and dishes. Books, suitcases, and a Schwinn bicycle will also be sold, along with puzzles and games. A variety of clothing in all sizes has been donated. Items that Simmons and Wortel pointed to specifically include a vintage fox stole and jewelry. A black mink coat and a set of golf clubs will be sold by silent auction. Hungry attendees will have the option of purchasing food including hot dogs, individual baked good items, and beverages. On Saturday morning, breakfast items will be available for purchase. In addition, sweets, including candy in the shape of Easter eggs, will be available. Simmons and Wortel noted that funds raised by the yard sale are used only for building maintenance and that last year’s event drew volunteers from throughout the congregation. “Last year’s sale involved almost every church member,” said Simmons. “There’s a community feeling because everyone (participates),” added Wortel. Simmons stated that the Salem Hellers congregation shares the building with All Saints Church and that the yard sale involves all who worship in the building. “This is a project both congregations can help with because it repairs our house of worship,” she said, adding that Salem Hellers holds services at 9:30 a.m. each Sunday and that All Saints meets at 10:45 a.m. Items that are left after the sale will be donated to local organizations. Readers who have questions about the event may call 717656-9249. In the case of inclement weather, readers may visit www.salemhellers.com for event updates.

corners will have a sightline to the action. The new stage location will accommodate a larger audience, too. Promise Players shows often sell out, and high attendance is anticipated for “Smoke on the Mountain.” “About 10 years ago, someone approached us and said, ‘You ought to do it.’ We looked into it, but it cost $3,000 plus the cost of scripts, music, and other production costs,” Promise Players director and founder Doreen Creighton recalled. “The same person came back to us two years ago and asked if they got people to help fund it, would we do the show.” The cast features seven actors and a pit of five musicians, two of whom - guitarist Ron McVey and banjo player Tim Kilby - are members of Summit Hill Bluegrass Band. “It is a popular play, and the reason it’s popular is the music,” Doreen said, describing the music as Southern gospel and bluegrass, featuring close harmonies. “The score includes well-known Southern gospel hymns that people love, plus a few originals,” she said. The entire show takes place in a North Carolina Baptist church,

The singing Sanders family is heading into town … in North Carolina in June 1938. The family’s entre into performing traditional and bluegrass gospel songs after a five-year hiatus is the subject of “Smoke on the Mountain,” the latest show to be produced by the Promise Players theater group. Performances will be held at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 26; Fridays, March 20 and 27; and Saturdays, March 21 and 28. Since the beginning of the fall 2019 semester, MHALC and TeenHope have been working together to provide students with education regarding anxiety, depression, and suicide prior to the screenings. “When I learned of

(MHALC’s) existing program, it seemed to be a perfect fit,” said Kim Moore, director of TeenHope. That realization led to a pilot program at a couple of Lancaster County high schools, where Gaudioso has spoken to students who were participating in screenings. Gaudioso educates teenagers about mental health treatments, which include therapy, medication

which is led by Pastor Oglethorpe (Tim Creighton). After the guest musicians burst onto the scene and sing their first number, Sanders family patriarch Burl (Tim Strawser) introduces his wife, Vera (Nancy Snyder, who is also the production’s music director); their daughter June (Sarah Shirk); and their fraternal twins Denise (Sophie Hatalsky) and Dennis (Doug Hostetler). Burl’s brother, Stanley (Ken Hess), has tagged along, as he was recently released from prison. As the musical unfolds, each family member shares a story about their beliefs. In a reference to Stanley’s time in prison, Support for Prison Ministries has been selected as the beneficiary of the show’s proceeds. “It’s a different role for me,” Hess said about Uncle Stanley. “In past shows, my parts were more comical. This is a more serious role for me.” That is not to say that Stanley is an entirely solemn character. The interaction between the Sanders brothers is often humorous, Doreen noted. June’s antics also provide some levity as she believes she has a gift for interpretive signing, which draws heavily from pantomime. This is Shirk’s first time appearing with Promise Players.

“It’s the biggest role I’ve ever had, so that’s exciting,” she said. Hatalsky and Hostetler are also Promise Players newcomers. Additionally, Hatalsky is new to the area, and making the cast has eased the transition. “When I moved down, I didn’t know anybody, and (the cast) felt like a family,” she commented. Hostetler said he auditioned for the show because he likes the music. He will play guitar on two songs. Hatalsky occasionally plays piano and Shirk takes a turn on the washboard and tambourine during the show. The primary accompanists, however, are McVey, Kilby, fiddler Randie Rineer, mandolinist Larry Russell, and bass player Abby Hylton. Dorothy Smith plays accordion and appears as Myrtle to Doreen’s Maude, two unspeaking characters referenced in the script. if needed, having supportive people around, and educating oneself about symptoms. She also talks about the steps involved in getting help and the different types of therapists available, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, or licensed social workers, and she talks about what students can expect during the screening. Part of Gaudioso’s presentation is to encourage students to be honest during the screening. “I tell them they need to be honest

and true to themselves because it will only help them,” she said, adding that she goes over the signs of depression and anxiety in detail with students and asks them to take a serious look at their own behavior. She asks them to look at things they once participated in that they are no longer doing, such as communicating with friends, completing schoolwork, playing a sport, or spending time with family. Kim McDevitt, executive director of MHALC, noted that the organization is trying to be proactive in facing the increased rate of anxiety and depression in teenagers. “We are working diligently to remove the barriers that prevent one from getting the help they need,” said McDevitt. “Mental health disorders can affect school performance, harm relationships, and lead to suicide, (so) we have increased our efforts in educating students on the importance of mental wellness, how to identify what a mental health challenge is, and how they can receive support for themselves and others.” When Gaudioso speaks to students, she tries to allay anxiety and fear about participating in a mental health screening. “(I tell them this is) just like getting your height, weight, and vision checked (at school),” she said. “You get your mental health checked.” Gaudioso explained that the screenings are done by licensed professionals, and students are referred to other mental health specialists depending on the test results. Following a presentation, the students will be surveyed to gauge the impact of the information they have received. “We feel it’s important for students to have as much information as possible so they know it’s normal to struggle in these areas … and there is help available for everyone,” said Moore. Readers who would like to learn more about MHALC may visit www.mhalancaster.org. More information about TeenHope may be found at http://scclanc.org/teenhope.

In July 2019, Governor Wolf signed Senate Bill 144, making training and development of trauma-informed care practices mandatory training for school administrators, staff, and board members. “They must be trained in identifying the signs and symptoms of trauma,” explained Fahrney. The training will inform participants about adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Fahrney explained that the experiences could be one extreme event or a series of repeated events that have potential negative, long-term effects on a child in physical, social, and emotional ways, which can lead to high-risk behaviors and chronic health conditions among other issues. The keynote speaker will be William Zee, partner at Barley Snyder law firm. Zee will speak about how the trauma-informed environment can benefit schools and workplaces in a variety of ways when he addresses attendees at the breakfast, which will be held at Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, on Thursday, April 16, from 7 to 9:30 a.m. The event will also include a panel discussion with Anna Brendle Kennedy, executive director of Lancaster Osteopathic Health Foundation; Sharon Schaeffer, director of Elementary Curriculum & Instruction for Manheim Township School District; Dr. Pia Fenimore, division chief of pediatrics for Lancaster General Hospital; and Matt Pfeifenberger, vice president of the Health Benefits Division of Murray Securus. Zee has represented public and private schools, intermediate units and higher education institutions throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey. He taught in public schools and at Eastern Michigan University and Rutgers. He currently serves on the board of a number of organizations, including the Lancaster Education Foundation. In the past several years, he has provided development programming and written on the topics of traumainformed and restorative student services practices. Fahrney noted that young people who have experienced trauma may go into a type of survival mode. “When they are acting in that mode, it can be hard for them to put that aside and be ready to learn,” she said. “(The training will give) educators and employers tools to be prepared to recognize and respond and create a culture of respect and support.” Post-traumatic growth and positive transformation will be a focus of the breakfast. “(The speakers will) talk about the importance of creating a traumainformed care environment, and how it benefits communication and employee productivity in the workforce, develops soft skills, and (fosters) social and emotional wellness,” said Fahrney. “(Speakers will discuss) best practices and different perspectives, including from a parent perspective.” Tickets, which are necessary to attend the breakfast, must be purchased by Wednesday, April 8. Readers who wish to purchase tickets may contact administrator@mtef.net, call 717-735-1751 or visit www.tickettailor.com /events/manheimtownship educationalfoundation/335822.
