“The cool thing about live theater and ‘Anne of Green Gables’ specifically (is that) Anne comes to life again for each generation,” said Cordell Huyard, creative director of Cavod Theatre. “A grandparent, a parent, a grandchild, and even a great-grandchild can come together and enjoy the show. (They can) have some laughs, shed some tears, and go home realizing how blessed they are to have their family.” Huyard looks forward to seeing audiences introduced to the redhaired orphan from Prince Edward Island when “Anne of Green Gables,” adapted from the 1908 book by Lucy Maud Montgomery, will be presented Ashley Gage will play Anne, the redat the theater, 685 W. an 11-year-old orphan who is accidentally sent to live with an elderly sister and brother - Marilla, played by Melissa Ticen, and Matthew Cuthbert, played by Caleb Zimmerman - at their Green Gables farm on Prince Edward Island. Because the Cuthberts originally wanted a boy to help out around the farm, Marilla, encouraged by her friend Rachel Lynde, played by Sue Heil, at first intends to send Anne back. But she and Matthew are charmed by the talkative girl, and Anne becomes a part of their family. The foundling also carves out a niche for herself in the village, finding a best friend in Diana Barry, played by Soren Lefever, and establishing a rivalry with classmate Gilbert Blythe, played by Derrick See Cavod Theatre pg 4

Church Yard Sale Will Fund Roof Project By Ann Mead Ash
In fall of 2018, when Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church member Jenni Simmons heard that the church building needed a new roof, she had an idea. “I thought, ‘If we have a yard sale and people donate (items to sell), all the money we would make would be profit,’” said Simmons. Simmons took her idea to Lorin Wortel, who is chair of the capital campaign for the new roof, and Organizers of the Salem Hellers Evan- they presented the suggestion to the gelical Reformed Church yard sale church consistory board, and it was including (from left) Ann Dell, Nancy approved. Hungry attendees will have the option of purchasing food items including hot dogs, baked goods, and beverages. “We are pricing items to sell,” said Simmons, who added that she would love to raise $2,000 toward the campaign. “We are at $75,000, and we need a total of $140,000,” said Simmons, who does not doubt that the total funds will be raised through various efforts. “God is good,” she said. Items that are left after the sale will be donated to local organizations. “Books will be donated to Lancaster Library,” said Simmons. Other items will be donated to the Military Order of the Purple Heart, an organization that provides a variety of services to veterans. Simmons began gathering items for the sale in early October. “I was moving, and I had a lot of things (to donate),” said Simmons. “We announced (that we were accepting contributions), and people began to bring donations in,” recalled Simmons, who noted that several of the five rooms set aside for the sale are already brimming. “We have a lot of brand-new Pfaltzgraff dishes,” shared Simmons, who added that many pieces and familiar patterns are represented. Other new items will include brand-name uniform shirts and pants, new pants with tags, and new pillows made with a brand-name foam. Because many of the church members are at the age where they are downsizing to different living accommodations or have estates to liquidate, there are antiques and a great many household items among the donations. Simmons said there will be a lot of clothing for adults, some clothing and toys for children, “tons” of books, puzzles, and a

Cavod Theatre from pg 1 Lambert. The play is co-directed by Monica DePaul and Alex Weaver. Huyard said that the tale of Anne coming to Green Gables resonates with the heart of Cavod, which was founded with the goal of associating the arts with the Creator, God. “We love the story of this orphan girl who is so lonely and who learns to love and be loved,” said Huyard. “That’s what we’re all about (at Cavod). We are all orphans until we are accepted into the biblical family. There is that beautiful undertone of going from a broken family to becoming a whole family unit (in this story).” To do justice to the production’s large number of scenes, Cavod is installing a turntable in the theater. “The turntable will fill the entire stage, and it will have a wall in the middle,” explained Huyard, who added that one side of the wall will be the Cuthberts’ kitchen, while the
other side might be the small school Anne attends. “The scene changes will happen in front of the audience,” said Huyard, who has engaged set designer Dave Dorman to research the regional and historical elements necessary to tell the story with accuracy. To add musical accompani-

Members of the cast and crew are looking forward to presenting the children’s classic that Huyard believes will resonate with area families. “There are times when Anne or Marilla become frustrat-

redware in Pennsylvania, Royer has organized “Thrown, Fired, and Glazed: The Redware Traditions From Pennsylvania and Beyond.” Part one of the exhibit opened on March 10 at the museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, and it will remain open through Tuesday, Dec. 31. Part two, which will feature the rest of the pieces Royer has gathered from the Barnes Foundation, The Hershey Story, Win-
terthur Museum, and Landis Valley’s own collection, will open in March of 2020. Royer said that when she began to plan the 2019 exhibit, she realized that redware had not been displayed in the museum for quite some time. “I started to talk to institutions and private collectors,” recalled Royer. “We were finding wonderful pieces, and the collection was getting bigger.” It was too big, in fact, to display all the pieces in one year, hence the two-year, two-part exhibit. Royer noted that one catalog will be published for the two parts. Royer explained that one reason so many potters came to Pennsylvania was in the makeup of the earth. “The clay here is similar to what was found in Europe,” she said, adding that most potters were also farmers. “They would farm, and then, when they had downtime, they would make pottery,” said Royer. “They had all the clay on their land, and redware was cheap to make.” Each town had its own potter throwing pieces on a wheel or making them in molds. “When you knew he was going to open
his kiln, you would go to his place and pick from the kiln what you needed,” explained Royer. “You could also tell him ahead of time what you might want so he could make it.” Not all potters stayed put in one town, however. Part of the display includes pieces by Willoughby Smith, a potter who took orders and even sold pottery door-to-door. Smith, who is associated with Berks and Montgomery counties, had a special carrying case filled with his flower pot samples, which fit into the bag like nesting dolls. “Smith would go around (from house to house) and ask what size pot (a customer) wanted and sell them,” said Royer. In addition to the flower pots, the display features cups, jugs, and a food mold similar to a bundt cake pan, along with a photo of Smith with one of his apprentices. Redware items, which are individually made, range from simple utilitarian plates and bowls to unusual pitchers shaped like heads. Platters were often decorated using one of two techniques. “(Potters) put glaze down on (the item), and then they scratch through
it (using a technique) called sgraffito,” said Royer, who explained that the scratches allowed the natural red color to show through. Slip decoration is a technique that creates lines and writing on pieces. Decorations often include birds and flowers. “Redware has similarities to other Pennsylvania German (creations) such as fraktur and blanket chests,” said Royer. “Pennsylvania Germans love colors and designs,” she added. “Just look at their quilts.” Use of redware was not confined to the kitchen and dining room. On display in the exhibit are a chicken waterer, a bee skep, footrests for a stove, and a variety of decorative items, including a piece in the form of a tiny cabin that is really a bank. Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum encompasses 100 acres in Manheim Township. The goal of the nonprofit organization is to collect, preserve, and interpret Pennsylvania German community history from 1740 to 1940. More information about the museum may be found by visiting www.landisvalleymuseum.org or by calling 717-569-0401.

The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley will present a program on Wednesday, March 27, titled “Trolleys” by Herb Fisher. The program will be held at 7 p.m. in the Ephrata Public Library, 550 S. Reading Road, Ephrata. Fisher will speak about the trolley system that operated in the local area prior to World War II. A special focus of his talk will be the rerouting of the Conestoga Traction Company line running between Leola and Akron and on to Ephrata. The electric trolley was the main mode of transportation for the local residents traveling from
place to place, including going to work, visiting relatives and taking a Sunday joy ride. After WWII, buses and then automobiles and superhighways took the place of trolleys. All that remains of the trolley system are a few tracks and the rail trails. Fisher has been collecting information and photographs on the local trolley companies for the past 12 years. He has a collection of approximately 8,500 photographs of the trolleys and trolley tracks. Admission is free and open to the public. For details, readers may call the historical society at 717-733-1616.

Josh Groff qualified for the PIAA Class 3A state wrestling championships, which were held on Thursday through Saturday, March 7-9 at the Hersheypark Arena. The Garden Spot junior wrestled in the 126-pound weight class after having finished fourth in the District Three 3A championships and thus qualifying for states. In the first round of states, he faced Corey Celenza, a senior from West Chester East. Groff was unable to score a point in a close battle with the Vikings senior as Celenza earned a 4-0 victory in the preliminary round. Groff, who had earned 31 wins on the year, faced Cole Grove of Chambersburg in the consolations’ first round. He suffered a pin 2:25 into the bout. At the district championships the previous week, Groff had a 6-2 firstround victory over Dylan Ramsey of Shippensburg. “He broke open a 0-0 match late in the second period with a takedown and then added two takedowns in the third to put the match away,” head coach Adam Bunting explained. Another tough opponent awaited him in the next round - Cael Turnbull

Garden Spot’s Josh Groff locks up with Corey Celenza of West Chester East during a 126-pound, preliminary bout in the PIAA Class AAA Championships in Hershey’s Giant Center on March 7. Groff went 0-2 in the tournament with a 4-0 loss to Celenza and a loss by fall (2:25) to Chambersburg’s Cole Grove in the first round of consolations.
of Dallastown. “He rolled into the semis with a win over Turnbull,” Bunting said. “He used two cradles in the first period to build an insurmountable 8-0 lead.” Though Groff lost in the semis to the top-ranked wrestler in the state and eventual district champ J.J. Wilson of Cedar Cliff, he eked out a 4-3 win, facing the same person he
had defeated to start the day Ramsey. In the fourth-place match, however, Groff came up short to Chambersburg senior Cole Grove. “He beat Ramsey a second time to punch his ticket to states,” said Bunting. “I’m so happy for Josh to accomplish that. He works so hard in the off-season and all season. He does everything we ask.”

“Journey Of Hope” Banquet, Auction Set Bethany Christian Services of Central Pennsylvania will hold “Journey of Hope,” its annual fundraising dinner and silent auction, on Thursday, April 4, at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. The family grew again when Reese married two years later. Reese shares both professionally and personally about the struggles and joys that adoption brings.
