Annual Good Friday Worship Service Set By Ann Mead Ash
For more than a decade, New Hollandarea residents have been invited to a special Good Friday service overseen by members of the ELANCO Ministerium. This year’s service will be held on Friday, April 19, at the Garden Spot Village chapel, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, at 1:30 p.m. The theme of the 2019 service will be “Places of the Passion.” Each of six area pastors will give a short meditation on a specific place on the journey from the upper room to the tomb. The service will open with a prelude by Honey Lou McAdams on the organ. The Village Ringers bell choir, under the direction of Fran Rapp, will provide the introit. Kevin Kirkpatrick, pastor of Terre Hill Bible Fellowship Church and current ministerium chair, will welcome the gathering and read the call to worship and prayer.
MUSICAL PRESENTATION
will present a concert on Sunday, April 14, at New Holland Mennonite Church, 18 Western Ave., New Holland, at 7 p.m. The concert will include classic hymn arrangements, Southern gospel songs, spirituals, and selections in modern styles. Admission is free, but a freewill offering will be received to benefit the chorus’s chosen mission project.
The offering will benefit CrossNet’s Pathways to Housing program, which provides safe and affordable housing to ELANCO-area individuals, families, seniors, and veterans who are experiencing or are about to experience homelessness. Meredith Dahl, executive director of CrossNet, said that the organization believes that every person in the community should have a safe and affordable place to live. “Pathways to Housing is a 12- to 18month program that focuses on empowering participants to build their resources, including financial literacy, physical health care, education, and emotional resources,” explained Dahl. “Our desire is to collaborate and partner with local organizations, churches, businesses, and municipalities to see participants meet their goals and find permanent housing after completing the program.” See Worship Service pg 2

Aaron’s Acres is searching for a year-round facility to accommodate its growing programs. A nonprofit organization in central Pennsylvania, Aaron’s Acres provides individuals with developmental disabilities ages 5 through 21 year-round, therapeutically based, age-appropriate recreational programs focused on enhancing socialization and communication skills. The search comes after the announcement of the Manheim Community Pool’s potential 2020 close. Aaron’s Acres has based its programs at the pool for the past five years, and pools have been a staple of Aaron’s Acres’ programs since the organization’s start in 1998. The programs focus on including all participants in every activity regardless of ability level, meaning the organization has special requirements for a future facility.
In addition, Aaron’s Acres hopes to consolidate its current facilities, including administrative offices and storage units, which are scattered across Lancaster County. The nonprofit is open to either developing a new building or repurposing an existing site. During Aaron’s Acres’ 20th anniversary gala in December 2018, the organization unveiled conceptual designs for its future facility, but the group remains open to discussion. The project is estimated to cost between $4 million and $5 million. Aaron’s Acres is seeking the public’s help in its search for a new location. To help, readers may call Aaron’s Acres’ Lancaster office at 717-917-6101. More information can be found at www.aaronsacres.org.

Change In Churches from pg 1 By Ann Mead Ash
“Churches are always looking at (the question), ‘How do we continue to be the faith community that is relevant and important to the people who come and give time on Sunday morning?’” said Kate Good, executive director of the Parish Resource Center (PRC), 2160 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The PRC works with 13 denominations to help answer questions like the one Good posed, and to that end, the organization will bring global activist and pastor Brian McLaren to Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, April 27, at 7 p.m. McLaren will speak on “The Changing Nature of the Christian Church.” According to Good, McLaren was chosen to speak based on what he can offer to churches. “We try to (present) leaders who
are nationally recognized leaders (in the area of) faith,” said Good. “(McLaren) brings an approach to church that people are hungry for.” Good added that in McLaren’s arsenal of ideas are new ways of imagining church and what the church of the millennial worshipper looks like, based in part on his experience as pastor of Cedar Ridge Community Church in Maryland, which was known for being innovative. McLaren is a graduate of the University of Maryland. He earned his Doctor of Divinity degree from Carey Theological College in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He also holds an honorary doctorate from Virginia Theological Seminary (Episcopal). In 1982, McLaren helped form Cedar Ridge Community Church, and in 1986, he became the church’s founding pastor. He served in that capacity until 2006. McLaren has been active in mentoring church planters and pastors. He speaks on a variety of topics including postmodern thought and culture. He has authored more than a
dozen books, including “A New Kind of Christianity” and “Naked Spirituality.” Good noted that in her experience with area churches, members and leaders are always looking for inspiration. “(McLaren) looks at the big questions facing the church - things that hold people back from becoming members and participating in church,” Good said. McLaren is known for helping congregations look at those questions in new ways. “He also talks about innovation and awareness of others’ traditions and understandings and (at) how they connect to Christian faith,” said Good. Good pointed out that McLaren’s talk should be helpful to all members of a church. “Faith leaders are an important part of this conversation, but all congregations are made up of people who are trying to figure out why church attendance is (lower) on Sunday morning or how to attract more young families,” she said. “Churches are looking at how (to) continue to
be the faith community that is relevant and important to the people who come and give time on Sunday morning.” Along with suggestions for church groups, Good believes McLaren has much to say about the individual faith experience. “(McLaren) talks about how to keep working at your own faith journey, which is an important question for any person of faith,” she stated. After speaking, McLaren will take time to connect with attendees. “There will be 15 to 20 minutes (for) questions and answers,” noted Good. “(The question-andanswer period will give attendees) a chance to ask specific questions that have been weighing on their minds and hearts,” she said. Speakers at past PRC events have attracted up to 1,200 attendees. Readers who would like to purchase tickets to hear McLaren may visit www.parishresource center.org or call 717-299-1113.

maintained compared to student enrollment numbers. The model for the future includes an endowment that creates a foundation for New Danville (ND), Locust Grove (LG), Lancaster Mennonite Middle School (LMMS), and Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMH). The current cash endowment is $9 million, with an additional $3 million in non-school properties. Endowment reserves remain strong and in place, preserving ND, LG, LMMS, and LMH campuses. Each campus is moving toward a stronger independent financial health position, yet remaining part of the larger LM system. LM is implementing a science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) focus systemwide. On the elementary level, MakerSpaces are part of ND and will be part of the LG campus curricula in the 2019-20 academic year. MakerSpaces provide students the opportunity to solve real-world problems with 21st-century skills, demonstrating critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity. LMMS offers a project-based learning (PBL) curriculum model that also engages seventh- and eighth-graders with four core themes each year. Again, this model is designed to solve current-day issues with a 21st-century skill set. The PBL model is in its fourth year of operation and is meant to allow students to transition into LMH with a new mindset on how to approach more advanced high school material and thrive in the real world.

ARRIVING LATE?
More than four years ago, Lancaster Mennonite (LM) School and Hershey Christian School entered into negotiations and a planning process for LM to acquire Hershey Christian. The enrollment at the Hershey campus of LM has been tenuous since the acquisition. After four years of operation, the LM board of directors, finance committee and administration unanimously agreed that sustainability of the Hershey campus of LM is no longer viable due to enrollment decline. LM has experienced enrollment decline for more than 10 years and is in the process of creating a sustainable financial model for the future. LM will be transitioning two campuses. Kraybill will operate independently as of Monday, July 1, and Hershey will close at the end of the 2018-19 school year. LM will also reduce staff at other campuses. This consolidation effort reduces the amount of square footage

Elizabethtown DeMolays (from left) Martin Stoner; Master Councilor Holden Green; Jonathan Curran, wearing the chicken mascot costume; Todd Schwartz Jr.; and Adam Baker plan for Elizabethtown DeMolay’s annual charity dinner. The chicken potpie meal will be held on Saturday, April 13, at the Freemason Cultural Center of the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown. Proceeds will benefit the Children’s Dyslexia Center in Lancaster.
Sing-Along from pg 1 The 22nd annual “Messiah” Sing-Along will take place on Friday, April 26, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. No child care will be provided. Singers will begin arriving at 6:30 p.m. According to Leaman, about 150 singers from Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties and even out of state typically take part. Leaman organizes them by voice part. Audiences of as many as 600 have attended past events. The full “Messiah” by G.F. Handel is organized into three parts. The first part covers Christ’s birth and fulfillment of prophecy, and the second part focuses on suffering and death, while the third part concludes with triumph over sin and death. The Christmas program, which
includes part one, is performed in Chester County in December. At Easter, the program begins with the overture and then includes all of parts two and three. Perhaps the most wellknown segment of “Messiah” is the “Hallelujah” chorus in part two, where the audience is encouraged to stand and sing with the vocalists. Leaman noted that sign language interpretation of the presentation will be provided by Carol Stevens and Grace McConkie. “Originally, it was just Carol (interpreting),” recalled Leaman. “But then Grace became interested (in interpreting), and she studied with Carol.” Leaman added that sometimes the women interpret simultaneously and at other times they take turns. Stevens serves as deaf ministry area coordinator for the
Peninsula-Delaware of the United Methodist Church. She has 50 years of experience interpreting American Sign Language (ASL). McConkie is presently working toward her ASL teaching certification while attending GoldeyBeacom College. Westminster will be represented at this year’s sing-along by soprano Carolyn McLain in addition to Floyd Rawleigh Jr., who will be the “Hallelujah” chorus guest conductor, and Westminister retired organist Pat Bleecker, who will play. Returning soloists will include contralto Heidi Kurtz, tenor Timothy Bench, and bass Mark Moliterno. McLain has performed locally with Opera Lancaster and the Lemonade Concerts for Opera Lancaster. She has also taken part in the Dorothy Rose Smith Concert Series at Highland Pres-

GS Softball Tops Exeter Township, Elco by Ara Grigorian
Garden Spot pulled off a 7-5 victory over Exeter Township on Monday afternoon in non-league softball action. It was a comeback victory for the Spartans, who trailed 3-0 after three innings and who, after tying the score and taking a 4-3 lead, saw the Eagles come back and tie the score again. Winning pitcher Elizabeth King held the Eagles to only seven hits as she struck out 10 batters and walked only two. A fielding error by the Spartans opened the way for two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Garden Spot got back both of those runs in the top of the fourth on a hard bases-loaded single by sophomore Gabi Spencer, scoring both Amelia Mercado and Zoey Parker King herself sparked a two-out rally in the fifth inning with a single. She eventually came around to score on an error to make it a 3-3 ballgame. “Everyone up and down the lineup had a hit,” head coach Kim King noted. “We had five girls with two hits each.” The win improved the Spartans’ overall record to 3-2.

Spartan shortstop Alexandria King moves to field an Elco ground ball during Garden Spot’s 15-0 Section Three win over the visiting Raiders last Wednesday.
“They’re a solid team and we were very happy with the way we played against a team like this,” King stated. “They have lots of girls who play travel softball. They have good pitching and can hit. “We’ve never beaten them before in all the years we’ve played them,”
she added. “This was a great team victory especially because we’ve been struggling with the bats.” The Spartans improve their record to 3-2 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League with Wednesday’s 15-0 defeat of Elco. Due to the mercy rule, the game was shortened to four innings, setting up a remarkable achievement for Elizabeth King.
“Elizabeth pitched a perfect game and struck out 10 of the 12 batters she faced,” said the head coach. Mercado had three hits, Megan Fisher had two hits including a home run, and Ali King also stroked two hits while Elizabeth King drove in three runs. “I look for our players to put the ball in play,” said King. “We had some nice line drives, getting good contact and doing what we needed to do.” Elizabeth King has been the only pitcher for this team. She started against Northern Lebanon on Thursday for her third start in four days. “The previous week, we had her at almost 500 pitches in four games,” explained the coach. She was uncharacteristically wild with four walks. She allowed nine hits but struck out six in the loss. “She had the same issue last Friday when we played Octorara because she had pitched so much already,” King said. “She’s usually right around the plate.” The Vikings used timely hitting and a few walks to plate four runs. The only Garden Spot run came on another home run by Fisher. “Now we’re heading into the crossover games on our schedule,” King said. “We need to make sure we do the things it takes to win and one of those things is scoring runs, getting

timely hits.” GIRLS’ LACROSSE Following a 19-6 loss to nonleague opponent Twin Valley on Monday, the Spartans came out much stronger the following day against Conestoga Valley in a LancasterLebanon League girls’ lacrosse match at home.
In the Twin Valley game, half of the six Spartan goals came on a Kiersten Ellsworth hat trick. Kayla Steiner scorched a pair of shots past the defense and goalie while Sophie Torrance netted one goal. Sophomore goalie Lexi Horning came through with 11 saves. By the midway point of the Con-

estoga Valley game, the Spartans found themselves trailing 10-7. A strong second half shaved one goal off that deficit, but it wasn’t enough as the Buckskins prevailed 13-11. Ellsworth was one of two players to reach five goals in the match, the other being Abigail Morley of CV. Ellsworth’s effort was supported by Mandi Rider’s hat trick. The Spartans came on strong with two goals and assist by Megan Esh while Madison Casey and Lilly Leaman each scored once. Morley, who also had two assists, and Hannah Chadwick (4, 3) led the Buckskins. Horning made 11 saves in this game as well. The Spartans fell to 1-5 overall. BASEBALL Garden Spot lost a slugfest to Exeter in non-league baseball action on Monday, April 1. Colin Gehringer doubled and drove in four runs to help the Eagles win 16-9. Exeter scored four times in the home half of the first inning after the Spartans had placed a pair in the top half. Garden Spot regained the lead with three in the second and one more in the third. But that 6-4 lead was short-lived as the Eagles scored seven runs over the next two frames. Ben Spencer roped two doubles, drove in three runs and scored two runs. Justin Petersheim came through with two more runs batted in, going 2-for-5 with a double and two runs. Dylan Crossan’s 2-for-3 afternoon also included three runs scored and a RBI. Ben Metz, Ivan Ruble and Evan Rizzo each drove in one run while Wyatt Weaver drove in two runs with a double. In Wednesday’s L-L League game at Elco, Nolan Fletcher tripled and drove in two runs, helping Garden Spot win 6-4. The Spartans improved to 3-2 in the league (3-3 overall). Rizzo (1-for-3) stole a base and scored one run. Spencer, the winning pitcher, went 2-for-4, stole a base and scored one run. Petersheim (1-for-4) also scored a run as did Crossan Spencer pitched five innings for the win, striking out six and walking five. Fellow senior Aiden Bracken came on to pitch two scoreless innings in relief. All six of Bracken’s outs were on strikeouts. BOYS’ TENNIS Garden Spot improved to 2-6 on the year with a victory over Warwick on Wednesday. The Spartans played four matches in four consecutive afternoons, losing 7-0 to Cocalico on the road on Monday before returning home for the next three. Against Warwick, the Spartans swept the doubles matches. Adam Hershey, who also won a singles match, teamed up with Adam Hershey for the number one doubles match - an 8-0 victory. At No. 2, it was Matt McCormick and Sam Tlumach winning 8-4 over Garrett Nissley and Clay Myers before Myers went on to earn one of the Warwick team points. Connor Murray and Will Culbert were a winning combination at third doubles, posting an 8-4 win. Hershey won 6-4, 6-2 at number
one singles. McCormick held on for a 6-4, 6-4 straight set victory. Tlumach stayed on the heels of Trent Myers but finished on the short end of 6-3, 6-4 sets. Tuesday’s 6-1 loss to AnnvilleCleona was closer than the score indicated. Hershey and Andrew Bowman hung tough at second doubles, finally losing in a 9-7 final. Bowman played a tough singles match, facing Caden Horning - one of the doubles opponents from earlier in the match. He won 6-2 but lost 7-5 in the second set. He won the tiebreaker 10-6. Hershey suffered a 6-4, 6-3 loss. Tlumach was on the short end of 6-4, 6-2 sets at number one singles. BOYS’ LACROSSE Garden Spot’s hard work paid off in a 9-7 victory over Twin Valley on Monday. The boys’ lacrosse team topped its non-league opponent despite a three-goal comeback bid by the Raiders in the fourth quarter. Benton Moyer was the leading scorer with four goals and an assist. Max Mercado tallied two goals to help the Spartans, who out-shot the Raiders 17-15. Each of the single goals by Ian Blankley, Jesse Mast and Gavyn Naranjo were crucial in this victory while senior goalie Titus Marburger’s eight saves kept the Spartans ahead. TRACK & FIELD Adam Horning paced the pack in the 800-meter run in Monday’s track and field meet with Manheim Central. Horning posted a winning time of 2:11.8 but the Spartans lost to the Barons 130-15. In the girls’ meet, the Spartans had a winner in the 300-meter hurdles as Faith Coblentz registered a time of 49.7 seconds. Logan Martin and Bryna Kelly each had a win in field events. Kelly won the high jump (4-11) and Martin tossed the javelin 93-10 to win. The Barons prevailed 115-33 as both Garden Spot squads fell to 0-2. BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL Garden Spot opened Thursday’s LL League boys’ volleyball match at Cocalico with a 25-16 win. The Eagles regained momentum for the next two sets, winning 25-14 and 25-10.
