A little extra at Easter
BY ANN MEAD ASHAt2:45 p.m. on April 4, Amy Marburger, food and nutrition manager with CrossNet Ministries, had left the organization’s Food and Nutrition Center to stand near the CrossNet van parked in the corner of the New Holland United Methodist Church parking lot adjacent to the CrossNet facilities. The van was loaded with food items to give out to anyone in the New Holland area in need of an Easter meal. “There’s usually a line (before 3 p.m.),” said Marburger. “But I had people coming inside (the Nutrition Center), so I decided to come out early.” Soon, Marburger and her helpers were handing out hams and carrots, purchased at a discount from Yoder’s Country Market; 5-pound bags of potatoes, donated by Shady Maple Farm Market; 150 dozen eggs from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank; and bags filled with candy, canned soups, noodles, and more, donated by Our Lady of Lourdes Church.
“Our Lady of Lourdes does a Manna Bag collection,” explained Marburger. “They do this for Easter and for Thanksgiving for us, and they target our needs.”
Marburger gave drivers and passengers friendly greetings as cars began to arrive. “I haven’t seen you in a long time,” she told one driver, whose tiny dog peered out the passenger side window. “How’s my little buddy?” she asked a child in the back seat of a mini van. “Have a happy Easter!” she called after him as the van pulled away.
Easter meals, which Marburger believes have been handed out for about a decade, consist of a ham, a bag of carrots, a dozen eggs, a bag of potatoes, and a bag of assorted extras. “We packed for 125,” said Marburger, who noted that in addition to the 3 to 5 p.m. drivethrough pickup on April 4, meals could be retrieved at the Nutrition Center on April 5 and 6. “I told (clients who) have appointments at the food pantry to just pick them up (when they come),” explained
Marburger. “I told them not to make two trips because gas is way too expensive.”
Looking ahead, Marburger belives the Food and Nutrition Center will

Interested in a trade? Scholarship funds are available
BY ANN MEAD ASHFrom the time Randy Royer was a child, he showed a strong interest in construction. His sister-in-law, Linda Lantaff, noted that he had “a passion for the trades,” playing with blocks and other toys that he could use to build things. Randy pursued a building career following high school, earning an associate degree in architectural engineering technology from Penn State University and a Bachelor of Science in structural design and construction engineering technology. Randy became a project manager and estimator
with Ames Construction, working there for nearly 30 years before his untimely death in October 2016.
When the date that would have been Randy’s next birthday rolled around, his friend and fellow Ames employee, vice president Steve Burridge was thinking about him, and he called Randy’s widow, Lori, to check on the family. The idea of creating a scholarship was discussed. “Randy loved working here,” said Burridge.
The first Randy Royer Memorial Scholarship was given in 2017. Each scholarship is a minimum of $1,000, and to date, eightscholarships

BY ANN MEAD ASHThe partnership between Aaron’s Acres and Penn Cinema goes back many years. Prior to the advent of COVID19 restrictions, sensory-sensitive cinema events were held there monthly. Now, to celebrate Aaron’s Acres’ 25th anniversary, the nonprofit has teamed up again with the movie theater located at 541 Airport Road, Lititz. The movie “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” will be shown on Thursday, April 27, at 5 and 6:30 p.m. All seats will be offered at the same price, and 100% of the proceeds will go
to help support Aaron’s Acres’ programs.
Handling greeting, ushering, and selling snacks at the theater that evening will be up to 20 members of Aaron’s Acres Angels, a new group of typically abled teenagers from throughout the county that formed during COVID-19 restrictions. “We first met online and we did a lot of Zoom calls,” recalled Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres. Paskoff pointed out that the participants first raised funds for Aaron’s Acres with a virtual bingo. “The funds went to buy pull toys and special snacks for camp,

worth a total of $37,000 have been awarded. At first, the scholarship was only available to students at Randy’s alma mater, Ephrata High School, but now seniors at Cocalico, Warwick, and Garden Spot high schools are also eligible. Students who plan to pursue studies in building/construction or automotive industry at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology or Pennsylvania College of Technology may apply.
Lantaff noted that Thaddeus Stevens offers an early entry program for selected students who may then attend during their senior year of high school. “We have rewritten our (scholarship) eligibility requirements to allow those students to qualify,” said Lantaff, who added that students in the program may receive funding during their first year at Thaddeus Stevens and then apply again for their second year at the school.
Randy’s friends Eric Bensing and his wife, Denise, are part of the scholarship committee. “It’s nice to do something to remember Randy and give the kids in the communities a scholarship platform,” said Eric. “The scholarship requirements are tailored to Randy’s interests and skillset.”
Lantaff, who developed the application, said that students are asked to respond to specific questions. “We are looking for individuals who share some of the same attributes as Randy,” she said. “We also are looking for individuals who demonstrate a history of interest in the field.” Lantaff said one recipient was involved in bicycle

Partnership expands nonprofit’s reach
BY CATHY MOLITORISWhen Angie Kreider’s mother, Sharon Atkins, passed away in October of 2021, the Columbia woman wanted to find a way to honor her mom’s life. Kreider and her father, Bob Atkins, created Nanny’s Nighties, using the nickname Sharon’s grandchildren gave her. The nonprofit organization provides high-quality nightgowns to residents of government-funded facilities who don’t have the money or
family resources for the items.
After a story ran in the Merchandiser last November, Kate West from Lancaster Countybased Velrose/Shadowline Lingerie contacted Kreider, and a partnership was born. “I saw Nanny’s Nighties in my local Merchandiser and thought, ‘What a lovely thought,’” recalled West, director of operations. Kreider and West struck up a conversation, and West offered to sell nightgowns to the organization at cost, approximately $10 per piece.

Joel Jakubowski, men’s ministry director with The Potter’s House, is well acquainted with the many ways family members can unintentionally enable a loved one’s addiction. “Some ways are overt like giving money (to the addicted individual),” said Jakubowski. “Others are subtle, such as not asking (the addicted individual) to make a change in (his or her) life.”
Jakubowski will share his knowledge with those who attend “Enabling vs. Supporting: Understanding How to Best Respond to the Addicted,” a seminar to be held at Conestoga Church of the Brethren, 141 E. Main St., Leola, on Thursday, April 27, beginning at 7 p.m. The free presentation is part of a series that has provided an average of one yearly seminar for the
last five years. The event is appropriate for families, pastors, and businesspersons, among others. Light refreshments will be served.
Some form of addiction affects nearly 70% of families. “This is about enabling versus support and helping families to understand the difference,” said Jakubowski, who noted that family members may think actions they are taking are helping the individual to gain freedom from the addiction, when they are actually helping to keep them stuck.
“The biggest form of enabling is giving the addicted individual money and generally that is (portrayed) by the individual to be for something other than drugs,” said Jakubowski, who noted that inspiring giving in deceptive ways by “pulling on the heartstrings of sympathy” is common. “The parents fall into the trap of thinking they are helping by giving the money, but the money is going directly to support the addiction.”
Jere Cassel, pastor of Conestoga Church of the Brethren, said that the response to the seminars has been positive. He recently spoke to a member of
the Plain community, who said that he and his family had been affected by the effort. “A father said he had attended one of the addiction workshops,” recalled Cassel. “(The father told me) ‘We got help for our son, and now he is healthy.’”
Jakubowski concurred that lives can be changed when families recognize the behavior pattern that is enabling and take appropriate action.
“The addicted person goes into a place of denial
(because) they don’t want to believe they are (as deeply addicted) as they are,” he explained. “Families also go into denial. They keep trying to provide care in hopes that it will pull the person out of what feels like a bad season, but it’s generally much deeper than an issue of behavior.”
Reservations are not necessary to attend the seminar. More information about The Potter’s House may be found at www.thepottershouse lancaster.com.
Partnership frompg 5
“This partnership will be instrumental in allowing us to serve so many more people,” Kreider stated. “I was floored knowing how many more women that meant I would be able to serve since we typically spend upwards of $25 per item.”
Kreider met with West at the Velrose warehouse in New Holland in late February, and she picked up 150 gowns to be distributed this month. Since that meeting, Kreider added another facility to her distribution list and an additional 50 nightgowns. She currently distributes gowns to facilities in Lancaster and York counties.
Nanny’s Nighties delivers the nightgowns twice a yearonce at Christmastime and once in April, in honor of Sharon’s birthday, which was April 18. Representatives from
both Nanny’s Nighties and Velrose delivered the gowns during the first two weeks of April. “We are delivering along with the staff from Velrose … so they can see firsthand the joy this brings to so many,” Kreider said.
A nightgown may seem like a simple gift, but it makes a
big impression on the recipient, Kreider explained, adding, “A nightgown is a way someone can feel special and feel beautiful.”

Spot volleyball tops Lebanon and Cocalico
BY ARA GRIGORIANWith crucial victories over Lebanon and Cocalico, the Garden Spot boys’ volleyball team kept pace with Manheim Central in the LancasterLebanon League Section Two standings. The Spartans improved to 4-0 following a 30 triumph at home on Thursday, April 6 followed by a 3-2 win at Cocalico five days later.
In blanking the Cedars, the Spartans posted one-sided scores of 25-8, 25-18 and 2511 for a sweep.
Tanner Laukhuff finished with a match-leading 12 kills. Keegan Redcay continues to lead the Spartans in assists. He finished with 35. Serving up four aces helped Dylan Zeiset lead the team in that category.
Also contributing were Luke Smucker (2 blocks) and Justin Mininger (2 digs).
What made the win at Cocalico impressive was the comeback by the Spartans, who were trailing 2-0.
In the third set, they turned the Eagles away 25-18. In the fourth set, they won the closest set of the match, netting a 25-23 win. It set up the tiebreaker, which the visiting Spartans took 15-11.
Laukhuff was off the charts, finishing with 40 kills.
Miniger’s 13 digs were tops on the team as was the total of 53 assists by Redcay.
SOFTBALL
Though there haven’t been any victories for the Spartans on the softball schedule, head coach Kim King says that she and the players, “...celebrate the little things.
“You have to celebrate the little things to keep you going,” King said.
The Spartans roster has been depleted. Already with only 11 players on the roster, two injuries have the squad down to nine players, which means any more injuries could mean forfeits.
“We knew it was going to be a tough season,” she explained.
The softball team suffered a 17-2 defeat to Cocalico on Wednesday, April 12.
“It’s not fun to lose,” continued the coach. “But you have to celebrate little things.
In the loss, Lexi Bender and Sydni King had base hits. Also, King came in and pitched - only her second appearance as a hurler.
The junior providing relief
to Paige Brady for pitching duties has been another small victory.
“It actually gives us someone who’ll give Paige some breaks as the season goes on,” King said.
Earlier in the week, the Spartans fell to the Elco Raiders by a 24-0 count. It was in this game that King made a relief appearance.
“She struck out two batters in an inning and a third,” the coach noted.
Another positive takeaway was the discipline at the plate and the steady effort.
“We had a lot of girls making contact,” King explained. “Only three batters struck out. Alyssa Brace got a hit for us.”
BASEBALL
Battling back from a 5-1 deficit on their home turf, the Spartans came up short against Section Three rival Cocalico on Wednesday afternoon, April 12. The Eagles saw the Spartans chip away at the lead, making it a 6-4 ballgame heading into the seventh inning. Cocalico added two more runs and held on for an 8-5 victory.
Though they out-hit the Eagles 7-6, the Spartans hurt themselves with four errors on the day.
At the plate, Caiden Murphy went 1-for-3 with a run batted in. Kye Harting also had a base hit and scored a run while senior Colin Smith collected three base hits, including a double. Smith scored one run and knocked in another.
The two teams hit halftime tied 7-7. The Eagles (5-3, 4-1 league) outscored the home team 9-7 in the second half with Sara Mackall, Olivia Reider and Danika Sauder each recording a hat trick.
On the Spartan side, Emily Ferris netted two goals and recorded an assist. Brielle Moyer, who also had an assist, and Kathryn Pierce each scored one.
BOYS’ LACROSSE
With its third straight win, the boys’ lacrosse team improved to 4-2 on Wednesday, April 5, defeating Lancaster Country Day 13-4.
empty and number three singles, losing 6-0, 6-1.
The Buckskins blanked the Spartans in all three doubles matches, improving to 5-4 on the year while Spot fell to 0-6.
TRACK
Garden Spot took on Conestoga Valley in a Section Two track and field meet on Tuesday, April 11. While the girls’ team fell in a close 86-64 battle, the CV boys topped Spot 102-47. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams fell to 1-1.
Gabe Smeltz also complemented the lineup with a 2for-4 day at the dish.
Two days earlier, the Spartans were the winners on the road, topping Elco in L-L League play 9-3.
Karson Weaver not only went 2-for-4 with two runs and a RBI, he helped get himself into position for scoring by stealing two bases. Harting (1-4) and Ryan Speers (1-3) each swiped a bag as well.
Smith had multiple hits (25) plus a RBI. Smeltz drove in a run and scored two. Mason Strine had a double and drove in a run on a 2-4 afternoon. Murphy (2-5) also slugged a two-bagger and knocked in one run.
Junior Caleb Zimmerman went 2-5 in the leadoff spot, including a two-run double. Speers earned the victory, going 5.1 innings and striking out five Raiders. He was charged with two runs on six hits.
GIRLS’ LACROSSE
In Section Two girls’ lacrosse action, the Spartans were relentless in their pursuit of their second Section Two win of the year. In their home match against Cocalico on Tuesday, April 11, the Spartans finished on the short end of a high-scoring 16-12 contest.
The Spartans’ scoring onslaught was led by Gwen Varley. She fired a match-high eight shots into the Cocalico net.
The loss dropped the Spartans to 1-4 in league play (2-6 overall).
Joseph Bernek’s seven-goal production led all scorers. Garden Spot’s Ayden Naranjo, Logan Lessley, Jared Patton, Kane Leaman, Nick Gleason, and Ben Keeport each netted one goal while Cole Leaman provided six saves in goal.
TENNIS
On Monday, April 10, the boys’ tennis team ran into a tough Conestoga Valley team in a non-league match.
Senior Walter Churpin put up a fight in his first singles set, losing to Yuji Wenger 6-3. Wenger went on to complete the number one singles match with a 6-0 win.
Andrew Herman came up
In the long distance runs, Alan Krock came through for the Spartans in both the 1600 (4:48.3) and 3,200 (10:43.5) runs.
Another senior, Kaleb Zimmerman, was a multi-event winner also. Zimmerman’s 48-8.25 shot put, and 160-9.5 discus toss measured the farthest for the meet.
Just like the boys’ meet, the Spartan girls had a standout runner in both the1600 and 3200. Melanie Esh won the two events with respective times of 5:46.9 and 12:55.1
Chloe Grady’s triple jump (33-7) and her 16-6 long jump both claimed first while sophomore Megan Hechler took the high jump at 5 feet.
Valerie Martin cleared 8-6 to win the pole vault.

Authors to visit railroad museum
Railroad art and photography are the subjects of two soon-to-be-published books, now available for preorder in the Whistle Stop Shop museum store at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg. The authors, J. Craig Thorpe and Tony Reevy, will also be at the museum for presentations and book signings.
“Railroads, Art, and American Life: An Artist’s Memoir” by Thorpe explores the past, present, and future of rail travel through his works of art. His personal story and paintings depict not only the golden age of train travel but also the role that railroads play in society today and looking forward. This 260-page, hardback volume features 130 color illustrations.
Thorpe will give a presentation and sign copies of his book at the museum on Wednesday, May 10, at 11 a.m. The presentation is free of charge, but advance registration at www.eventbrite.com is required, whether attending in person or via Zoom. Registration is for the presentation only, and the ticket does not include museum admission. Regular museum admission rates apply and may be paid at the admissions desk on the day of the visit.
“The Railroad Photography of Phil Hastings” by Reevy explores the life and work of Dr. Philip R. Hastings. Along with his contemporaries, Hastings was influenced by the photojournalistic movement that developed during his childhood, and he expanded his work from traditional locomotive roster and action shots into a holistic view of the railroad environment. Reevy’s 224-page hardcover volume features 152 blackand-white illustrations.
Reevy will give a presentation and sign copies of his book at the museum on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m. during the annual Members Day event. His free presentation will be for Friends members only. Registration for this event will be made available in late summer.
For more information, visit www.rrmuseumpa.org or call 717-687-8628. The cost of each book is discounted for current members of the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. The book order form is also available on the aforementioned website.
