14th Annual EPC Golf Outing Will Benefit Good Samaritan Services BY COURTNEY MENGEL

n 2002, Good Samaritan Services (GSS) purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to serve five people at a time. Nineteen years later, GSS has acquired 13 different properties and can serve 200 people every day. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 after opening an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children. GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, emergency shelter, traditional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing. “Our organization is unique in that we can help people with stable housing regardless of where they are in their journey,” stated GSS development and communications coor-

I

dinator Shadoe Caprell. “A lot of times, people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can’t receive assistance from agencies unless they reach the definition of homelessness. We can fill in the cracks.” Since July 2020, GSS has served nearly 400 men, women, and children through its emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support programs; provided nearly $90,000 in rental assistance, including 18 eviction preventions; and helped 53 individuals and families successfully complete their programs and find stable housing. “I get to meet individuals in our shelter and hear their stories,” said Caprell. “They’re all such wonderful, beautiful people. There’s such a stigma that comes with homelessness, but it’s so far from the truth. Anyone can become homeless at the drop of a dime.” Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing. The 14th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 11, at Crossgates Golf Club,

1 Crossland Pass, Millersville, with tee times at 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Meals, beverages, and snacks will be provided, and participants will have chances to win prizes throughout the golf course. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to GSS. “With COVID, people have been hit really hard this past year, so there are many people in need of the services that GSS offers,” noted EPC marketing director Lauren Hillegas. “You could be helping a family member or your neighbor.”

Three Generations Of Caring

GARDEN SPOT EDITION

BY ANN MEAD ASH

Deb Reimers of New Holland remembers when she first began volunteering at what was then called the New Holland Food Bank when it was being run by area churches more than 30 years ago. “Kathy Newswanger asked if I wanted to help,” recalled Deb, adding that the food bank was then located in a little room at the end of a strip mall near the corner of Main Street and Oak Avenue. The recollection is significant because it led to three generations, including her three children and nine grandchildren, now volunteering with CrossNet Ministries in a variety of capacities. Deb, who has since served on the ELANCO School Board and as chair of the CrossNet Ministries board, said there is a singular reason for her efforts. “(Volunteering) is what the Lord tells us to do,” she said, adding that she has served because she felt the Lord calling her to do so. Deb began setting an example for her three children, sons Adam and Josh and daughter Heather, when they were very small, taking them along when the food bank moved to Trinity Lutheran Church. “Many of the volunteers were older, and food was stored upstairs in the church and brought down to the food bank,” said Deb, who noted that her

Now, both Heather and Deb’s daughter-in-law, Hannah, who is married to Adam, help regularly at CrossNet’s Food and Nutrition Center, and Heather answers phones sometimes in the CrossNet office. Adam delivers food to the pantry and helped with the Homestead Project, pledging money to the effort with each home he sold as a real estate agent. Heather’s husband, Jason, served as a mentor for a local youth through CrossNet and, using his construction and design skills, helped create plans to remodel the house on Franklin Street that became the CrossNet’s resource center and the warehouse that was turned into youth center space. Deb’s grandchildren have all helped with CrossNet’s Summer Lunch program, which provides food for ELANCO School District children during the months when school is out. “The grandchildren go along to help deliver lunches to the various sites,” said Deb, noting that sometimes she is at the Food and Nutrition Center with some of her grandchildren and finds Heather and her children volunteering at the same

Registration For Kindergarten Opens

First Pickin’ In The Park Planned According to Bryant Glick, who is organizing the first Pickin’ in the Park with Linda Dibartolo and Bill Heagy, the event was in the planning stages before the COVID-19 shutdown in March 2020. “This has been in the works for 16 months,” said Glick. “Terre Hill borough is graciously allowing us to hold this,” he added. The first Pickin’ in the Park event, which will include the Keystone Steak Cook-Off, an antique and artisan swap meet, food vendors, and live music, will be held in the Terre Hill Community Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill, on Saturday, May 1, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Proceeds of the event will be donated to the Weaverland Valley Fire Department. Admission is free, and the event will be held rain or shine. “We wanted to do a steak competition (with) an antiques side for Bill and Linda, (who own Tannery Antiques),” explained Glick, who worked with a steak competition organizer to promote the Keystone Steak Cook-Off, which will include more than 40 professional grilling teams vying for a $1,000 first-place prize. A chicken wing contest will be held as well. A nominal fee is required to enter, and a cash prize

will be awarded to the winner. The antique and artisan swap meet, which will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., will include more than 35 vendors. Glick noted that an antiques event called Oddities Bazaar Market will be held in Adamstown in conjunction with Pickin’ in the Park. The Oddities Market will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Renninger’s Antiques Market, 2500 N. Reading Road, Adamstown. “We will have a variety of food,” said Glick of the more than 10 food trucks and vendors lined up to offer food for purchase at Terre Hill Community Park. Among those will be Hen House Grilling, Lickity Split, Auntie Anne’s, and Holy Smoked Meats. In addition, the Garden Spot High School Grassland FFA will sell milkshakes, and LANCO Performing Arts will sell food items from the concession stand in the main park pavilion. Musical entertianment by Dane Fox will begin at after noon. Glick emphasized that the event was designed to appeal to people of all ages. “It is family-friendly,” said Glick, noting that the Terre Hill Timbers playground is located in the park. “It’s not just an antique event and craft show and steak competition. We wanted to do an event that encompassed family.”

Questions about the steak cook-off may be directed to PickininthePark PA@gmail.com. Individuals wishing to enter the wing competition may do so at that email as well. Readers with questions about the antiques swap meet may call 732-239-1363 or email lindadib@live.com.

Kindergarten registration for students in the Eastern Lancaster County School District is open for the 2021-22 school year. Parents of children who will be age 5 prior to Wednesday, Sept. 1, should contact Alice Irwin, prekindergarten literacy and

War Memorial To Host First May Market Last fall, a few creative friends were talking. They had all taken part in fall vendor events, and they wondered about holding a spring show. “We’re going to have fun,” said Barb Dagen, one of the organizers of the first May Market. Dagen added that the timing of the event just prior to Mother’s Day will provide opportunities to purchase reasonably priced gifts mothers will appreciate. May Market - 2021 will be held at the Upper Leacock

Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA) Building, 54 W. Main St., Leola, on Saturday, May 1, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The May Market will feature about a dozen vendors specializing in vintage, natural, and artistic items. Among the many items that vendors will offer for purchase will be baked goods; plants, including succulents; wreaths and other natural arrangements; lavender products; herbal and skin care items; and candles. Items such as handbags, garden

Win flowers for Mom! aprons, painted slates, and dryer balls will also be offered for sale. Food items that hungry shoppers may purchase will include breakfast foods and coffee, along with hot dogs and hamburgers at lunch time. The event will raise funds for ULTWMA, a nonprofit, volunteer organization that organizes and hosts community events that honor the military service of all local residents. Readers who would like to learn more about the organization may search for “Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association” on Facebook.

Visit townlively.com/mothers-day-form to share what makes your Mom special! Tributes will be posted on townlively.com in time for Mother’s Day, May 9.

Last year’s event was a scaled-down convoy of 30 drivers. “We are thrilled to be partnering with the Mother’s Day Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy for our second year,” said Joey Hughes, vice president/general manager of the

“The auto auction will not be open to the public, and we won’t be having the carnival we usually have, but there are still several ways for people to participate,” said Terry Finch, co-chair of the convoy committee. “We’ll have a livestream on our chapter’s Facebook page, and we’ll post everything also on www.wishcovoy.org. We are also going to have a drive-through chicken dinner pickup at Country Table Restaurant in Mount Joy, which is right along the route.” Preorders are being taken at the event website. The public is also invited to participate in an online auction that will run from Saturday, May 1, through Monday, May 10, at www.wishconvoy.org. “We have a lot of ‘experiences’ packages, plus gift cards to restaurants, playground equipment, trips, just a lot of fun stuff to bid on,” Finch said. “Some of the Wish children create items like birdhouses or pictures or sculptures, and those always do really well.” People are invited to cheer the convoy along the route, which can be found at https://tinyurl.com/ u8ddcvrw. “There’s great viewing at LCBC Manheim campus, where they have a huge parking lot,” Finch recommended. “There’s also options to watch at the Country Table and

Spot Girls’ Lacrosse Battles LCD, Palmyra The Dutchmen managed to escape multiple threats as the Spartans stranded 13 runners. Despite the errors, which extended the Dutchmen’s rally, and a questionable call that killed a Garden Spot rally, Spot did battle back in this one. “ We struck out 14 times against their pitching,” Reiff noted. “We were down 6-1. But even with everything that happened, we made it close. We had the tying run up to bat three different times. We fought valiantly to the end.” Ty Stanley had an RBI double. Justin Petersheim was on base three times and stole three bases. The questionable call was a hit that appeared to drive in two Garden Spot runs. “In the top of the third inning, we had the bases loaded and our leadoff hitter hit a line drive down the third base line,” Greiff explained. “Their third baseman dove in fair territory and knocked the ball foul. “We had runners crossing the plate and the umpire said they had to go back,” continued the coach, “that he had called it foul.” Another challenge for the Spartans is roster depletion due to injuries and other protocols. “Between varsity and junior varsity, we have eight kids out,” Greiff explained. TENNIS There were some closely contested tennis matches in New Holland on Monday, April 19 in a Section Three battle between Lebanon and Garden Spot. Hometown Heroes To Hear The Bells East Petersburg Mayor James Malone noted that Sunday, May 2, has been proclaimed Bells Across Pennsylvania Day. On May 2, at 7 p.m., residents, businesses, and churches will be encouraged to ring bells for three minutes in a solid chorus of statewide support for the Pennsylvanians who put themselves in harm’s way to serve the public during the pandemic. Elected officials across the commonwealth have joined together to promote the second annual Bells Across Pennsylvania Day to show gratitude for their hometown heroes. On March 6, 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a statewide disaster emergency was issued. In every municipality, essential service providers have continued their work at the expense of themselves and their families to serve the general public. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, more than 1 million Pennsylvanians have contracted COVID-19 and over 25,000 residents have died from the virus. “The Pennsylvania State Mayors’ Association held the event last year as a way to say thank you to everyone from nurses to police to firemen to grocery store workers,” said Malone. “I’m in information technology and I’m designated as an essential service provider, but I don’t typically have to interact with others. People working on the front lines don’t have that opportunity.” Malone said he views this event as an opportunity to promote social interaction. “Across the nation, people have fallen into the mentality of not interacting with anyone, and that’s not good,” he said. “This gives everyone a chance to realize we’re all in this together.” Event planning will be local. Malone encourages each municipality to determine whom they want to honor, how they want to honor them, and where they want to honor them. “We know that these workers are struggling and taking risks to help others,” stated Malone. “These people are the reason we’re still functioning as well as we are.”

Evaleen Weinhold, a 96-year-old resident of Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community in Manheim, summed up the resilience of senior citizens this past year when she imparted the lesson she’s learned from the pandemic: “Lean on the Lord and go to your knees. … This, too, shall pass.” While COVID-19 has affected all segments of the population, the impact has been particularly hard on seniors like Evaleen, who have dealt with fear, isolation and loneliness as the pandemic has closed retirement communities to the public. With restrictions being lifted, seniors at Mount Hope reflected on this past year - and how community members can help support the mission of the retirement community. Before she came to Mount Hope, Evaleen worked as a registered nurse and raised four children with her husband, Ernest, who passed away in 2015. When the pandemic hit, she learned to cope without
