Cars And Crafts For A Cure hen Sharon Groff, captain of the Misfits on a Mission Relay For Life team started thinking about a spring fundraiser, she knew she wanted to hold an outdoor event. “Everyone is tired of being cooped up,” Groff pointed out, adding that the park event will allow for social distancing and that masks can still be utilized for more protection. The Cruise In for a Cure Car Show, which will be held in the Terre Hill Community Memorial Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill on Saturday, May 22, will include not just a car show, but also crafters, vendors, and a number of food trucks. Music at the event will be provided by DJ Timbo. Groff has scheduled the craft and vendor show to open at 8 a.m. Among the many items vendors will sell will be both jewelry and homemade jewelry, sweet treats, popcorn, items made from gourds, and wreaths. Homebased businesses that will be represented will include Tastefully Simple, Norwex, Mary Kay, Pampered Chef, and Usborne Books.

Carla figures that the funds from those added together totaled more than $150,000. The Hope for Haiti Benefit Auction of Northern Lancaster County has been scheduled for Saturday, May 15, at the Hertzog Homestead Event Venue, 470 W. Metzler Road, Ephrata. Organizers have planned a day that will include pony rides, food, and an auction. The auction began several years ago when a group of neighbors centered around the common goal of helping those living in poverty to gain education and employment skills to help them become self-sustainable. According to Kristen Hertzog, organizer of the event, the auction will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until the last item is sold. Among the many pieces of merchandise that will go up for bids will be handmade quilts in a variety of sizes, lawn and garden supplies, antiques, collectibles, furniture, gift cards, baskets, and donated gently used items. “We are still accepting donations of new items and financial gifts to offset the cost of the auction,” said Hertzog. Food that will be available for purchase will include chicken barbecue, salads, sub sandwiches, toasted cheeseburgers, pulled pork sandwiches, baked goods, and homemade doughnuts. Hertzog noted that extra attention has been paid to safety measures this year. “There’s natural social distancing due to the 23-acre size of the property (where the auction is held),” she explained. “We are taking precautions for safety for
both the volunteers and the attendees,” she said, adding that masks are strongly encouraged. All the funds raised at the 2021 event will benefit two organizations that help provide education and business training for Haitian small business owners. Paradigm Shift is the education division of Haiti Transformation, which teaches leadership skills and is led by Nelson and See Haiti pg 3

“Our club is a neat thing,” said Lori Stahl of the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society. “We have been around since the mid-1800s.” Stahl noted that at one time the organization changed its name to the Lancaster Honey Producers, but in the early 2000s, it was restored to the original name. “It has always been about beekeepers mentoring new beekeepers and being advocates for the honeybees,” she explained. To help give beginning beekeepers a sweet start, the organization normally holds a one-day workshop in late January or early February. According to Stahl, past events attracted about 100 attendees, with another 100 fledgling beekeepers on a waiting list. This year’s event was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, but Stahl said that the organization hopes to hold the 2022 event.
Earlier in the spring, Tom and Carla were talking, and they noted that it had been five years since Tom’s twin brother, Mike, had died suddenly. The couple decided to hold a new ride that would bear Mike’s name, with the goal of making it an annual event. They chose two local households as beneficiaries and scheduled the inaugural Mike O’Neill Memorial Ride for Sunday, May 23. Those wishing to take part are asked to meet at 1390 Sheep Hill Road, East Earl, at 9 a.m. to register. A per-bike registration fee will be charged, with a nominal additional fee for a passenger. The ride will leave at 11:30 a.m. for a meal at T.J. Rockwell’s in Elizabethtown. All funds will benefit the families of Rodney Shirk and Sharon Anderson. Rodney, who is known as Shirky to his friends, grew up in New Holland and learned about the auto body business at an early age from his father. He worked for the O’Neills for many years. Rodney and his wife, Mary, live in Terre Hill. “(Rodney) was (recently) diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer,” said Carla, who added that he is currently undergoing chemotherapy with radiation and surgery planned for his treatment. Carla noted that funds given to the Shirk family will
Another service the organization offers is swarm retrieval. Swarms occur when a hive divides itself. “The queen and a bunch of the bees leave,” said Stahl. “(Bees) swarm anywhere between April and October, but the bulk happens in May,” noted Stahl, displaying photos of swarms she retrieved during 2020 on her phone. “A typical traditional swarm looks like a big ball of bees.” The organization’s website www.lancasterbeekeepers.org provides a list of swarm collectors divided by location. “A swarm may See Bees pg 9

help to cover bills while Rodney cannot work. Sharon lost her husband on Thanksgiving Day 2020 after caring for him during his six-year battle with cancer and Parkinson’s disease. “(Sharon’s) father died a week later, so she had two big blows within a week,” said Carla. Funds donated to Sharon will help her try to catch up with house maintenance and other bills. In addition to the ride, prizes and giveaways donated by local businesses will be part of the event. Carla noted that the past rides have been good events and good for the community. “This is a way to continue that in memory of Mike,” she said. The library, which is a Christian training center, has more than 1,000 volumes of books. Hertzog said auction organizers would like to help the library get to 5,000 volumes. The auction regularly brings together about 100 volunteers

In that E-town match, the Spartans opened the second half with a 3-1 advantage and outscored the Bears 4-2. Gabrielle Mansi, Gwen Varley and Brielle Moyer scored two goals each. Ashton Gonzalez also scored. In the 9-8 victory at home, the Falcons and Spartans were tied 5-5 after a wild first half. Lexi Horning made eight saves. Emma Gruber had a hat trick. Brielle Moyer led with four goals while Mansi and Gonzalez each netted one goal. BOYS’ LACROSSE Those who have been following the boys’ lacrosse team have surely seen improvements in the second half of the season. Garden Spot improved to 4-12 with a pair of good performances that netted one win and a close loss. The Spartans lost a tough 12-10 match to LCD/LC on Thursday, April 29. The Cougars took a 4-1 lead into the second quarter and saw the Spartans pick away at that lead until it was 5-4 LCD at halftime. Both teams notched four goals in the third quarter until the Cougars pulled away with a slight edge in the fourth. The Garden Spot offense recorded 32 shots on goal to 27 by the visitors. Gavyn Naranjo had a hat trick (1a). Zane Fisher (2a), Ayden Naranjo and Logan Lesley, each scored twice. Ayden Naranjo and Lesley each recorded an assist. Cole Leaman racked up 10 saves. The following day, the Spartans topped Daniel Boone 16-2, improving to 4-11 on the year. In the nonleague victory Gavyn Naranjo was virtually unstoppable with eight goals and one assist. His brother Ayden Naranjo scored once and assisted four times while Fisher came away with another hat trick. Lesley (2g, 1a), Jared Patton (1g,1a), Tom Andress (1g), Blake Weaver (3a), Michael Zook (1a) also contributed. The Spartans were solid in goal thanks to Leaman (10 saves) and Coline Howe, who had two saves. In the 14-7 loss at Conestoga Valley on Tuesday, Fisher and Gavyn Naranjo both had hat tricks. Lesley scored the other Spartan goal. TRACK The boys’ squad came up short in an 83-67 loss on Monday at home, falling to 0-6 with the loss to Solanco (3-2). The girls’ team improved to 2-4 with a 96-55 win. Finn Wenrich was a multiple winner for the boys, taking the 200m and the 400m. Part of what made this a close track meet was Garden Spot winning two relays. In the 4x400, it was Wenrich, Jaxon Kulp, Sean Kelch and Alex McFalls while Kulp and McFalls teamed up with Tom Watt and Joel Benedick in the 4x800. Kulp also won the 100m while McFalls claimed the 800 and Alan Krock took the 1600. Nicole Kelch was in two winning relay teams. She teamed up with Isabelle Stauffer, Melanie Esh and Lauren Horning in the 4x400 and anchored Cloe Martin, Julie Hoover and Kaleigh Watkins in the 4x800. Esh won the 1600 and 3200m while Kelch took the 800 and Horning the 400. Bryna Kelly won both hurdling events. Kelly took the high jump while Logan Martin won the javelin and Elyse Mundorff took the triple jump.

Mower.” Ranck agreed right away. “Anything for Billy,” she said. Klaassen talked to Horst, and a Snapper SPX riding mower was selected for Witwer. The generosity of Ranck’s customers and Horst’s customers quickly became apparent, and by April, the mower had been purchased. Klaassen said he is thankful for area residents who contributed to the effort, adding that the community happily came together to help. “Everybody likes Billy,” noted Klaassen. “That’s the attitude around town.” On April 1, Klaassen, Ranck, and Horst, all gathered at Horst’s to present Witwer with his new mower. Witwer pulled the red Snapper up on the grass to one side of the parking lot while the others gathered around him. After having his picture taken, Witwer grinned broadly and started up his mower.

sit there for 20 minutes, two hours, or two days,” said Stahl. “When you see a swarm, you want to get a beekeeper there as fast as you can.” Stahl said that beekeepers use a special bee box that smells familiar to bees with an entrance that can be made smaller and even closed to capture bees. The website also offers informational documents under the “Members” tab, including an article on designing a garden for pollinators. Stahl recommends that gardeners plant flowers that bloom in February, March, early April, August, September, October, and November. “When it’s the end of April, bees can find nectar and pollen everywhere,” she explained. She also encourages allowing some clover, violets, and even dandelions in the green landscape of the lawn to create pollinator islands. Stahl said that putting out water for bees can be a controversial subject because water can be a point of disease transfer. She recommends only putting out water after several weeks of drought and then being sure to include rocks or logs for bees to keep them from drowning. “Some bees have the job of being the water collectors,” she said, noting that water can be used to cool the hive or thin honey that has crystallized for use. “A lot of people are using the venom from honeybees for medicinal purposes,” said Stahl, who noted that treatments for arthritis and Lyme disease are being studied.
