Lighthouse Plans To Build New Church By Ann Mead Ash
Steve Ritchey, lead pastor of Lighthouse Assembly of God in New Holland, has a vision for the future of the church. “I would like to see it that the barriers that would keep people from entering a church would be brought down,” said Ritchey. Lighthouse recently purchased 13 acres of land on Route 23, just east of the Route 897 juncture at Ewell Road in East Earl. “People can come as they are and be changed into who God wants them to be,” he stated. Ritchey said that Lighthouse has been in the process of outgrowing the church’s current location at 105 Earland Drive, New Holland. On Jan. 15, we purchased (the land) for our new church home,” recalled Ritchey, who added that the church had been mulling over an expansion
for some time. “We were planning to expand at our current location; however, we didn’t think that would be enough space,” he said. “We were keeping our eyes open for a suitable piece of property to meet the needs of our church.” After church representatives inquired about several pieces of land, the property on Route 23 was secured. “I can’t think of a more perfect location for our new church home,” said Ritchey. Plans are for a contemporarystyle building that meets the functional needs of the community and a growing church. The

PA Family Travel Fair Goes Virtual
In early April, when Larry Stoner, Region 1 operations coordinator with Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS), 583 Airport Road, Lititz, learned that Bird-in-Hand Fabric, owned by Sylvan and Loraine Stoltzfus, had been creating masks for anyone who requested one in response to the COVID-19 crisis, he was moved to involve MDS to help. “They had been making them for about two weeks out of the kindness of their hearts, and they were giving fabric and getting elastic and (wire) for the nose (to others who were making them),” Stoner explained. Playing Hallway Bingo, visiting with loved ones online and enjoying movies and exercise classes via closed-circuit television are just some of the activities that residents of the Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook are taking part in during this time of social distancing. In addition, the retirement community has announced that to date, there are no cases of the coronavirus among staff members or residents. “We are currently COVID-19 free and thank God each day for this blessing,” said Joleen Weaver, Tel Hai director of communications. “Our residents are keeping busy and we, too, are trying our best to cope during this pandemic.” See Tel Hai pg 5

When Wendy Royal, editor of Where & When Pennsylvania and organizer of the third PA Family Travel Fair, realized that the 2020 fair, which was scheduled for April 18, would have to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, she was heartbroken for the more than 50 exhibitors. When she learned that all of them were committed to doing the 2021 event, she wanted to do something to help them. On April 21, Royal finalized plans to take the fair virtual starting during National Travel and Tourism Week, which was held from May 3 to 9. The virtual PA Family Travel Fair launched on May 4 and will continue through Saturday, May 30. The virtual fair can be accessed at See PA Family Travel Fair pg 6
DelGrosso’s Amusement Park and Laguna Splash and the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon will be among the many destinations highlighted during the virtual PA Family Travel Fair, which can be accessed using the QR code found with this article or by visiting www.whereandwhen.com/virtual-pa-family-travel-fair.

runs about two years into the future. “If everything went as we would like, I would love to be in a building by May 2022,” said Ritchey. “That’s the goal.” Associate pastor Scott Gray thinks the new building will suit the church membership. “Lighthouse is a growing, vibrant, healthy, friendly, and inviting spirit-filled church,” he said. “We have a culture of being a loving family,” added Gray, who noted that he and his family were welcomed warmly when he joined the staff in 2019. Ritchey said that the vote to purchase the land occurred on Dec. 4, 2019, which was also the 25th anniversary of his arrival as pastor. “That was not planned. It just happened we had the business meeting on that day,” recalled Ritchey. “Getting the property is God’s provision,” he said. “He has wonderful things in store.” Readers who would like to follow the progress of the new church building may visit http://lighthouseag.com or search for “Lighthouse Assembly of God” on Facebook.
Memorial Day Pilgrimage Canceled The 2020 New Holland Memorial Day Pilgrimage has been canceled. The Pilgrimage and the ceremony at the New Holland Park were canceled by the United Veterans Council of New Holland because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Considering the large turnouts the event has had at the cemeteries in past years, organizers did not feel the required 6-foot social distancing could be maintained at the event. The members of the United Veterans Council of New Holland are acting with concern for the well-being of the VFW members, New Holland Legion members, New Holland Band members, Boy Scouts and spectators. The Veterans Council has offered to provide flowers to the 13 cemeteries that are usually visited during the Pilgrimage. The flowers will be placed on veterans’ graves. The Bowmansville, Bridgeville, Groffdale, Ranck’s, St. John’s, St.
Stephen, Voganville and Zeltenreich cemeteries have confirmed they will receive flowers and place them on veterans’ graves. The Trinity cemetery has elected not to receive flowers this year, and those flowers will be available for pickup on Saturday, May 23, from noon to 2 p.m. at the New Holland American Legion, 35 S. Hoover Ave., by family members who would like to place a flower on the grave of a family veteran. Information about the availability of flowers at Cedar Grove, Evangelical, Terre Hill and Weaverland cemeteries is forthcoming. The United Veterans Council encourages all Americans to honor veterans by displaying the American flag on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, at their homes. The public is invited to attend next year’s Pilgrimage on Monday, May 31, 2021. For more information, readers may contact Michael Martin at m_martin67@comcast.net.

building will sit a distance back from the road, and sports fields may be situated to the back or side of the building. “The architecture will be inviting to everyone from the community,” said Ritchey, who referenced The Shoppes at Belmont in Lancaster as a model for the style that is being considered. Plans for the building include an expandable sanctuary that will seat 600 people at first, but could ultimately seat up to 900. Other amenities that church representatives hope to see will be a gymnasium with an adjacent kitchen, a secure classroom area for children, an area for youth ministry, classrooms for adult education, an office suite for the staff, and a café for fellowship. Ritchey noted that the land is located in East Earl Township, and he said that the township officials and area residents have responded positively to the plans. “The people have been wonderful,” he said. “We want to make sure that we are good neighbors who add and give to the community.” Currently, the timeline for the project

Together, we can save lives. Are you in? Even as we make strides against COVID-19, it’s not time to let up. Following the proper guidelines remains critical — because that is still the most effective way to slow the spread of the coronavirus. • Stay home as much as you can • Practice social distancing — keep at least 6 feet between yourself and others • Wear a mask in public, covering your nose and mouth • Cover coughs and sneezes • Wash hands often — for at least 20 seconds For a quicker return to the things you love, we need everyone to be in this together. For your family. For your neighbors. For our entire community.

Tel Hai from pg 1 Weaver attributes the lack of COVID-19 cases to the community’s early response to the pandemic. “We started restrictions early. Our disaster awareness team started to meet on March 9, and we began restrictions on March 13,” she explained. “We implemented our infection prevention methods for both team members and staff. We’ve been masked for at least a month.” The measures also included limiting entrance to the facility and requiring temperature checks for all staff members. “We have an infection prevention trailer (on-site). For staff, they have to stop at the trailer to get temperature checked and answer a series of screening questions related to symptoms,” Weaver said. “At the conclusion of their shift, they get their temperature checked again to see if it has gone up during their shift. Everyone - even
nonclinical workers - gets checked twice a day.” She noted that visitors and approved vendors are also temperature checked and they are provided gloves and masks. In addition, if packages arrive for the residents, the items are dropped off at the tent and hand delivered to the residents by staff members. “The only visitors that are allowed on campus are (for) end-of-life situations,” Weaver noted. “Family members that come in are also screened and provided PPE (personal protection equipment), which includes a mask and gloves, which must be worn until they leave campus.” To keep residents on campus,

Tel Hai has added expanded grocery and prescription delivery services. “The only course of action they would need to leave for would be for medical appointments,” Weaver noted. Visitors to the virtual travel fair may enter to win the package at the website. The winner will be chosen in a random drawing by Friday, June 5. Lining up to take over the Where & When social media are a mix of visitors’ bureaus, historic attractions, amusement parks, museums, and allinclusive resorts. Among them are the Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association, the Nature Inn at Bald Eagle, Pennsylvania Great Outdoors, Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine, DelGrosso’s Amusement Park and Laguna Splash, and Refreshing Mountain Retreat and Adventure Center. Fort Roberdeau in Altoona will also have a day manning the
beautiful vistas.” Royal added that the town of New Castle in Lawrence County is considered the fireworks capital of America because it is the home of two fireworks enterprises that trace their origins to the mid-1800s. The county is also home to a craft burger trail. Royal said that through the virtual fair, she is encouraging involvement by the whole family, including the youngest members. “We will have children’s activity pages, and there’s a downloadable crossword puzzle and some coloring pages,” Royal pointed out. “I am encouraging parents of tweens and teens to involve those children in their travel plans (as well).”

Virtual tours of areas will be available on some days as well. “We have 18 different destination marketing organizations involved,” noted Royal. “Some of those will include virtual tour links for their areas.” Among the destination marketing areas that will be part of the virtual fair are the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau and The Happy Valley Adventure Bureau. One of the exciting aspects of the travel fair is that the exhibitors bring information about interesting and beautiful parts of Pennsylvania to those who attend. The virtual fair can accomplish that goal by putting the spotlight on special attractions in different areas of the state. “Susquehanna, Wyoming, and Sullivan counties are for people who really like to get away to open spaces,” noted Royal. “ Worlds End State Park (in Sullivan County) is really pretty, and in Franklin County, there are

The Fulton Theatre has posted updates related to its 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons. The theater plans to resume the 2019-20 season in August, with its production of “Kinky Boots.” All shows have been rescheduled, and the Fulton will reopen as soon as possible. All subscription series packages will receive new performance dates and will otherwise remain unaffected at this time. In the meantime, the Fulton is implementing plans to help and give back to the community. The Fulton Theatre will retrofit its production shops to make personal protective equipment for local Lancaster hospitals and medical facilities, including face shields and masks. This project is possible due to an underwriting gift from Ed and Jeannie Arnold. The Fulton has also made artist housing available to visiting medical professionals. The Fulton Theatre will remain paused, including the box office, until receiving the all-clear from the state and local governments to return to the theater. The Fulton will work to move every patron to their corresponding day and time during the rescheduled run. For additional information, readers may contact Eric Pugh at epugh@thefulton.org. The Fulton Academy’s spring classes have been canceled. The summer classes will remain as scheduled, beginning Monday, June 15. Students registered for spring classes will receive a credit toward a future class. Any requested refunds will be processed once the box office is able to open. The Fulton Follies, the spring fundraiser themed “Moulin Rouge,” scheduled for Friday, April 24, at the Hamilton Club has been postponed. A new date has yet to be determined and will be announced in the future. Additionally, other scheduled Producer and Artistic Director Circle events have been canceled. The Fulton Theatre will continue to engage audiences through social media channels, including www.facebook.com/fultontheatre. Construction on phase II of the Breakout Performance Campaign has been put on hold. The Fulton will communicate changes as they happen. For more information on the Fulton’s Breakout Performance Campaign, readers may visit www.fultonbreakout.org. Efforts will be made to continue communications with audience members through email, www.the fulton.org, and social media. Urgent questions should be sent to boxoffice@thefulton.org or messaged via the Fulton’s Facebook page, which will be continuously monitored by Fulton Theatre staff. For those wishing to obtain a refund, the Fulton’s box office will process those requests upon their return.

Members of the Dayspring Christian Academy chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) recently held a fundraiser to raise awareness about human trafficking and to provide funds for two organizations working to end trafficking. Students partnered with the local organization North Star Initiative and the
international END IT Movement. The fundraiser itself was a coffee and hot chocolate café called Project 1.27 held weekly at the school from mid-January through the end of February. The café was named after James 1:27. Along with the fundraiser, members held a weeklong collection drive of household goods,
such as paper towels, hand soap, and cleaning products to donate to North Star. They collected more than 250 items. North Star Initiative, an organization based in Lancaster County, was founded to support women who are survivors of human trafficking by providing them with
care through a Christ-centered focus. The END IT Movement focuses on educating people on the global issue of human trafficking. NHS members also showed the film “Priceless” to high school students to raise awareness about the international scope of the human trafficking industry.

The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) reminds state residents that its ChildLine, a 24/7 hotline for reporting concerns of child abuse or neglect, is still fully operational and available at 800-9320313 for Pennsylvanians seeking to report potential cases of child abuse or neglect. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and as scheduled recognition activities and regular life have shifted due to COVID-19, DHS and child welfare advocates implore all Pennsylvanians to learn signs of potential abuse or neglect and, if they suspect abuse, make the call to ChildLine. As the public navigates this public health crisis and the necessary disruptions, it is important to not lose sight of the obligation to keep children safe and prevent child abuse. Whether it is a neighbor, family member, or community member encountered in a store or elsewhere, if someone suspects something is wrong, anyone can call ChildLine and make a report.

The Lancaster County Board of Elections is in need of poll workers for the general primary election on Tuesday, June 2. Many of its usual poll workers are considered in the high-risk group and have expressed concern about working in the polls due to coronavirus. Full-day judges of election and inspectors of election are especially needed. Clerks are welcome. The board is presently looking for roles to be filled in Lancaster city, East Cocalico Township, East Donegal, Lancaster Township, Manheim Township, Millersville, Strasburg Borough, West Hempfield Township, and West Lampeter Township. Poll workers do not need to live in the precinct where they work. Online poll worker training is provided, and there is financial compensation. Those who are registered to vote in Lancaster County or are 17 years old with parental permission may contact April Wefler at 717-299-8298 or awefler@co.lancaster.pa.us. For further details on election duties, readers may view the poll worker fact sheet at www.co.lancaster.pa.us/302/Poll -Workers.
