As the New Holland Early Learning Center (NHELC) prepares to hold its third international meal, pastor Dawn Ranck-Hower, director Wanda Bortzel, and program coordinator Tina Hanson have been looking over the list of all the countries that will be represented. “The spotlight will be on Ethiopia and the Latin American countries,” noted Bortzel. Hanson agreed, listing Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Peru, and Mexico among the places whose cuisine will be represented, along with Pennsylvania Dutch foods. “We will have Italy, Russia, and from Asia, Vietnam,” Hanson added. Ranck-Hower chimed in, “That’s why we say we represent five continents.” The international meal will be held at the New Holland Mennonite Church, 18 Western Ave., New Holland, on Saturday, June 1, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

VOLLEYBALL PROGRAMS
Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St., Morgantown, will hold coed volleyball each Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. through Sept. 9. Participation will be free through June 3. Following that date, participation will be by donation, which will benefit local charities. Women’s-only volleyball will be held the first and third Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. of each month through Sept. 18, free of charge. Readers who want more information may visit www.conestogamc.com, search for “Conestoga Mennonite Church” on Facebook, or call 610-286-9124.
The buffet-style meal will allow guests to purchase food to take out or eat at the church. According to Hanson, the 2018 buffet offered 260 guests 43 unique dishes made by staff members, parents, and friends of NHELC. “We have parents and teachers and community members from so many different countries represented here (at NHELC),” said Bortzel. “The teachers cook (dishes associated with) their heritage.” Hanson noted that they hope to serve more people at this year’s event. Dishes will be labeled and will provide guests with information about the country of origin. The meal is a fundraiser for NHELC. According to Bortzel, tuition from students covers about 85 percent of costs for the nonprofit center. Ranck-Hower explained that NHELC does not cap the number of students it enrolls who receive government aid. Funds raised See International Meal pg 8

New Beginnings Church, an organization with roots in Akron, which has been meeting at the Doneckers Building under different leadership for about five years. “They were an existing church renting this space,” said Knowles. Meanwhile, Living Ministries was looking for a permanent home that was centrally located for the Friday Night Skate and a church called The Living Room. “ We found this building,” recalled Knowles, who shared that the ministry purchased the building at what he called “a phenomenal price” in April 2018. Since then, Knowles, who became lead pastor of New Beginnings in September 2018, has been working with associate pastors Brad Vater and Nelson Sepulveda, along with church members, to renovate the building. New Beginnings Church, which Knowles said observes a more traditional style of worship, currently meets in the building on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. for coffee with a service at 10 a.m. Living Ministries, which was founded by Knowles, grew out of a youth outreach called the Friday Night Skate. “We had been going from parking lot to parking lot at churches and building skate park ramps for youths to use,” recalled Knowles. The Friday Night Skate is currently meeting monthly in Ephrata, but the gathering will meet on Friday evenings at 7 p.m. in a designated area of The Point when the building is completed. The Living Room is the second church that meets at The Point @ Doneckers. The Living Room developed when Knowles and his associates were searching for a church setting for youths who frequented the Friday Night Skate and their parents. “The Living Room is a nontraditional church setting that meets on Monday evening,” said Knowles. The service begins with supper at 6:30 p.m., followed by worship. “It’s very conversational,” he said. “We move the chairs and put them in circles, and we go through questions.” The two churches and the youth outreach will be the anchors for The Point @ Doneckers, but Knowles and company have much more planned for the site. “Half will be businesses, and half will be ministries,” explained Knowles, who noted that TNT Ministries and The Refuge, an addiction recovery ministry, will have offices in the building. Businesses will include a dance company, a retail store of handcrafted items, a café, and a children’s play space. Living Ministries hopes to have the building completed and all the tenants moved in by June 1, 2020, but New Beginnings and The Living Room are already meeting in the downstairs space and some of the business owners hope to have their enterprises in the building soon. Readers who would like to know more about The Point may visit www.tlrephrata.com.

Alumni of the former Western School are invited to a reunion and lunch on Friday, May 17, at 11 a.m. at Yoder’s Restaurant, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland. Western School was one of approximately a dozen one- or two-room elementary schools in Earl Township providing education to children during most of the 1900s. Western closed its doors after the 197172 school year after buses began taking rural students to larger, consolidated schools. Western was located on the north side of Route 23 on the west side of New Holland where there is now an empty lot next to the Sauder Chevrolet car lot. After the school closed, the building was used for a picture framing shop, a law office and other businesses until it was eventually torn down. In 2017, 29 women who attended Western School gathered for a
lunch reunion. The men asked to be invited to the next reunion. Alumni are now in their late 50s or older. Participants at the upcoming reunion will be asked to pay a nominal fee for expenses in addition to buying their own lunch. There will be a presentation on the Western School history. Alumni will be invited to tell stories and share photos. Reservations are appreciated; to make reservations, readers may contact Vivian Martin Colatta at lennycolatta@ comcast.net or 717-656-8887. International Meal from pg 1 by the international meal will benefit the organization’s general operating budget. Hanson noted that last year’s meal raised nearly $5,000. NHELC has set a goal of $7,500 for the 2019 meal. Sponsorships are an important part of the fundraiser. “We have reached out to
more people for sponsorships (this year),” said Hanson. “We are very appreciative of our sponsors from last year, and we think it’s important to thank them,” she stated, noting that a number of New Holland area organizations and businesses have served as sponsors for the fundraiser.

NHELC was recently awarded the STAR 3 rating by the Keystone Stars, an early education rating system that evaluates quality improvement. Bortzel noted that the Keystone representatives were impressed with the number of children with varying needs that NHELC serves. Jennifer Morales, academic and behavioral support coordinator for NHELC, acts as an advocate for parents of these students. In addition, several NHELC teachers speak Spanish, so the organization has begun offering language immersion as part of the curriculum in some classrooms. The meal will be served at a set price for those age 11 and up. Discounts will be offered for children ages 7 to 10 and 4 to 6. Children age 3 and under may eat for free. Individuals who have questions about the meal may call 717-354-4440. More information about NHELC may be found at www.creatingcommunityforkids.com.
WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital recently received a donation of 25 infant CPR kits from a fundraiser held for the American Heart Association. The hospital will give the kits to families of babies who are at risk of heart, breathing or choking issues. The hospital provides CPR education for families with at-risk babies before their babies are discharged. The infant CPR kits will help to refresh and reinforce that education with items that include an educational DVD, an inflatable baby manikin and a bilingual reminder card. The kits were funded by money raised at the eighth annual Pursenalities Party held in November in Lancaster. Chaired by Tracy Artus, the event raised more than $18,000 for the American Heart Association, supporting the purchase of the kits as well as the Go Red for Women campaign. Artus, accompanied by two grandsons and representatives of the American Heart Association, brought the kits to the hospital’s Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which specializes in the care of premature or unstable full-term newborn infants.

L.H. Brubaker Appliances and Water Treatment, with three locations in Lancaster and Mechanicsburg, is celebrating its 87th anniversary. In 1932, Lester H. Brubaker opened a store providing the sales and service of farm equipment in Strasburg. At that time, the only appliances offered were large International freezers used mostly by farmers. In 1960, Donald H. Frank joined the sales and parts department at L.H. Brubaker. Shortly thereafter, Lester permitted General Electric (GE) to display appliances in the showroom. The first year L.H. Brubaker offered appliances, only 90 sold, but those sales were thanks to Donald. Considering appliance sales not to be a good business decision, Lester informed GE that he had decided to get out of the appliance business. GE countered with a compliment, saying that the manufacturer never liked to end business relationships with a reputable company that paid its bills on time, and it requested that a few pieces be displayed in a corner of the showroom and that Donald be allowed to sell them with the tractors and lawn mowers. Lester agreed. That year, Donald sold 295 pieces, and the following year saw sales of 525 appliances. The sales numbers continued to climb as years went by. In 1972, Donald and his wife, Elnora, bought L.H. Brubaker from Lester, and it became solely an appliance store. Counting the two Franks, the store had 11 employees. The following year, Donald’s oldest son, Donald L. Frank Sr., joined the family business. In the fall of 1974, L.H. Brubaker moved into a new store that sat beside the original location on Strasburg See Brubaker pg 13

Mackenzie Neff. “Getting to do theater with dancing is kind of a dream. It helps all of us stretch ourselves.” “It’s really challenging,” noted Sydney Norgaard, who wanted to take part in the show after seeing her brother, Brayden, perform in last year’s revue. “Once we’re able to (perform) the number, it is satisfying. Teamwork plays a role in that.” Mackenzie is enjoying watching that process unfold as opening night approaches. “It’s overwhelming to see all the talent coming together creating this,” she said. “Watching everyone come together as a team supporting and challenging each other makes us more independent as performers.” Kolby Colmary, a veteran of several
Servant Stage shows, noted that he loves that the show goes to nursing homes to reach people who cannot come to the theater. Under Calderon’s direction, the students have become acutely aware of how audiences respond to them. “You have to learn how to adapt how you’re interacting to reach every audience,” explained Isabel Subacz, who serves as dance captain for the show. Brayden agreed, saying, “It’s so fun to see the audience’s faces light up when they recognize the music and sing along.” Performances are open to the public on a pay-what-you-will basis. To reserve seats, readers may visit www.servantstagecompany.com or call 717-560-8241.
Teenage cast members of Servant Stage’s “Jump, Jive, and Jukebox!” will perform the musical revue at area retirement communities and at Lancaster Bible College.

thrown in. Perhaps, however, Calderon’s most crucial role is that of teacher. “I teach these students how to put all their gifts and talents together,” noted Calderon. “It’s a huge reward to see (students) learn to be supportive of one another … and to see each student rise to the challenge.” Servant Stage’s newest show will be performed in the Good Shepherd Chapel at Lancaster Bible College, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, May 18, and Sunday, May 19, at 3 and 7 p.m. each day. The show has also been slated to be performed during May at several area retirement communities, including Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, Garden Spot Village, Luther Acres, and Calvary Fellowship Homes. More than 80 students tried out to be part of the Servant Stage 2019 season, and Calderon believes the turnout was due to the many young people who were interested in the musical revue that he named “Jump, Jive, and Jukebox!” “It’s a revue of anything you would want to hear when you put your quarter in the jukebox,” explained Calderon. “There’s a lot of variation,” he stated, adding that “Wild Thing,” “Footloose,” and “Do You Love Me?” will be included, along with songs by New Kids on the Block and music from the Broadway hit “Hamilton.” Calderon endeavors to add depth to each number to give audiences more than song and dance. “We find little stories within each song,” he said. “It’s acting first. The song was written for a reason, so let’s try to tell a story within one song.” The intensive rehearsal process gave the cast members only a week to become familiar with the songs in the show before beginning rehearsals on March 24. “We meet each person where they are and push them a little farther in their training,” said Calderon. “The talent is incredible, and I am just thrilled at what they have been able to accomplish in such a short time.” Students who are taking part in the show are responding to the technique. “I grew up doing dance and theater separately,” said

Pike. The facility at 340 Strasburg Pike, Lancaster, continues to be the corporate headquarters and main showroom. The next several decades saw notable expansion of the business. Water treatment products and service were added in 1985. Showrooms were opened at 5303 E. Trindle Road, Mechanicsburg, in 2004 and across from Park City at 896L Plaza Blvd., Lancaster, in 2012. Across the three stores, 72 employees currently work for L.H. Brubaker, selling and servicing an extensive selection of high-end, built-in, and professional-quality kitchen appliances from Wolf, Sub-Zero, Thermador, Bosch, and Bertazzoni. Appliances in a range of price points are available from GE, Samsung, Frigidaire, and KitchenAid. L.H. Brubaker Appliances and Water Treatment aims to be a one-stop shop with the most brands in the tri-state area. “Eighty-seven years later, we are excited to be celebrating what Lester H. Brubaker started,” said Donald L. Frank Sr., who is the business’ sole owner. “Now with the third generation of Franks working within the company, we are committed to continuing the longstanding tradition of L.H. Brubaker. Our customers tell us that it is our professional staff that sets us apart.” Donald Sr. noted that knowledgeable sales consultants will help customers pick the appliance or water treatment option that is right for their needs and their budgets, and the consultants will refrain from high-pressure sales tactics. “And it doesn’t stop there,” he continued. “We have our own professional installation teams for both appliances and water treatment. Every appliance purchase is backed by our own factory-trained installation and courteous service specialists.” Members of the public are invited to celebrate with the Franks and the employees of L.H. Brubaker during an anniversary event that will be held from Wednesday, May 15, to Saturday, May 25. Readers may see the ad in this paper for special savings and offers. carried a 9-8 lead into the seventh inning. Though the Raiders pulled even, the Spartans won in walk-off style in the bottom of the seventh. The Spartans finished with 11 base hits on the afternoon, including two each by Ben Spencer, Dylan Crossan, Aaron Montoro and leadoff man Evan Rizzo, who knocked in two runs. Spencer, who stroked a double, finished with three runs batted in. Crossan also doubled and scored both times that he was on base. Joe Royle, Wyatt Weaver and Justin Petersheim each had one RBI. Spencer was on the hook for the Raiders’ eight runs, one of which was unearned. He struck out seven batters in four innings. Ray Haddon pitched two crucial innings of relief, keeping Elco’s bats quiet. Though Montoro did allow a run in his one inning of work, he struck out two and was credited with the win. Dakota Smith went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI’s for the Raiders, who fell to 7-9 in the L-L while Garden Spot improved to 8-9 (8-11 overall). At the plate, he drove in two runs while Petersheim drove in the other. Spencer had two hits and two runs scored. He and Bracken each stole a base. VOLLEYBALL In finishing up the regular season, the Garden Spot boys’ volleyball team faced two Lancaster-Lebanon League opponents on consecutive nights. On Monday, the Spartans edged Section Two rival Lebanon by a 3-1 margin on the road. They improved to 6-9 on the year, including a 4-7 league record. The Manheim Central squad, already having claimed the Section Two crown, stayed unbeaten (12-0) in league play by topping the Spartans 3-0. Down 2-0, Garden Spot did not go down easily in the third set. They prolonged match point until Central finally won 26-24. Monday’s match also included some close sets. The Cedars came back from a 2-0 deficit to win the third set
25-21. The Spartans regained momentum and put the Cedars away with a 25-13 win. Dwight Weaver and Jordan Martin were among the leaders for Spot, registering seven kills and dishing out 17 assists, respectively. John Sauder recorded three blocks while Aaron Lapp led the team with three aces. Garrett Fisher poured in nine kills against Central. The visitors were led by Mason Nissley who finished with 23 kills, four aces, four digs and two blocks. Lapp and Sauder had match-high totals as Lapp collected six digs and Sauder finished with four blocks. Jordan Martin finished with 12 digs and Davon Martin had one ace. SOFTBALL Garden Spot’s season came to a close with a 12-7 record (11-7 league) after a 3-2 loss to Northern Lebanon on Wednesday. It was a game that featured senior pitcher Elizabeth King pitching her final game in a Spartan uniform while fellow senior Megan Fisher returned as her battery mate after having been absent from behind the plate due to injury. “We went out to have fun and to

PENNYSAVER play for our seniors,” head coach Kim King said. “It was definitely emotional for our seniors. Five of them have been there since their freshman year. “We had a lot of good things happen for our seniors in their last game,” King added. “We had 10 hits and Northern Lebanon only had two. But we also had four errors.” Abi O’Neill had three of those 10 hits. She also collected three hits in Tuesday’s victory. The Spartans were coming off two decisive victories, having defeated Elco and Columbia on the road. In Tuesday’s 14-2 win at Columbia, Elizabeth King broke her own school record in strikeouts and reached a milestone in the process.
“Elizabeth had 18 strikeouts, which was a single-game high for her and a team record,” King explained. “She also collected her 500th strikeout. That’s great when you consider she didn’t pitch as a freshman.” Her younger sister Ali King stepped in as catcher for this game as well as Monday’s win at Elco. “Ali stepped up and did a great job for us,” King said. Along with O’Neill’s three-hit game, the offense earned a boost from senior Zoey Parker, who had two hits and a run batted in. Camryn Focht had two singles as did Elizabeth King. Ashley Risser also got a hit, but so did freshman Emma Royle. “Emma Royle had her first start as a
freshman and had her first hit of the year,” King noted. Monday’s win at Elco featured a 16-strikeout game for King, who allowed only one earned run in a 12-3 victory. “We got everyone into that game,” said King. “It’s great to do that and see what you have next year.” The battery mate sisters had three hits each. Risser had two hits. BOYS’ LACROSSE Garden Spot’s season ended with a great effort as the Spartans played Schuylkill Valley in a non-league road game. The Panthers managed to hold off the pesky Spartans in a 12-8 finish on Friday, May 3, outscoring the visitors 4-1 in the
fourth quarter of an otherwise close match. Garden Spot launched 34 shots on goal to the Panthers’ 41. Titus Marburger came away with 13 saves for Spot. Benton Moyer finished with four goals while Max Mercado and Gavyn Naranjo each netted two goals. Zane Fisher had an assist while Ian Blankley dished out two assists. An improved Garden Spot squad finished 5-12 on the year (2-8 in L-L League). TRACK Cocalico topped Garden Spot 105-44 in a Section Two boys’ track & field meet on Monday. Adam Horning’s victory in the

Dwight Hurst had a 7-foot pole vault effort and tossed the shot put 55-3.5 for two first place finishes. The Spartans fell to 0-7 while the Eagles improved to 5-2.
In the girls’ meet, Cocalico won 99-50, improving to 2-5 on the year while the Spartans fell to 0-7. Faith Coblentz was the winner in the 3,200 (13:42.1) while Logan Martin tossed the discus the farthest - 80-10. Also in the field events, Bryna Kelly took the high jump at 4-8 and Briana Zimmerman claimed the pole vault at 7-0.

May is Mental Health Month, and this initiative was started 70 years ago by Mental Health America of Lancaster County’s national organization, Mental Health America (MHA), to raise awareness about mental health conditions and the importance of good mental health for everyone. According to the organization, a healthy lifestyle can help to prevent the onset or worsening of mental health conditions, as well as chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. It can also help people recover from these conditions. Finding a balance between work and play, the ups and downs of life, and physical health and mental health can help someone on the path toward recovery. MHA Lancaster has both peer and family and child advocates to guide individuals, along with resources and educational speakers for events, workplaces or classrooms. For help finding support and mind-body lifestyle ideas or for help navigating local behavioral health services, readers may visit www.mhalancaster.org or contact 717-397-7461 or mha@mhalancaster.org.
