Antique and classic auto show plannedvoting will end at 2 p.m. Winners will be announced at 2:30 p.m.
ccording to organizer Harold Kilhefner, the 40th annual Antique and Classic Car Show held at Terre Hill Community Park in 2023 went well. “We had a great year last year,” said Kilhefner. “We had perfect weather and just shy of 150 cars (registered).” Kilhefner is proud of the number of cars that turn up for the event. “Years ago, when I took this over, we got 80 to 100 vehicles,” he said. “We have averaged 150 vehicles in good weather.”

150 vehicles in good weather.”
On May 2, the weather was perfect for antique and classic cars to be brought out into the sunshine to be photographed for this article. Jeff Shirk brought the Buick his father bought new in 1955 to the park. Paul Lausch brought his 1965 Studebaker Daytona, and Jon Seibel brought his 1953 Chevy. Bob Snader’s 2014 Dodge Challenger rounded out the group.
The 41st annual Terre Hill Antique and Classic Car Show will be held in the park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill, on Sunday, June 2. Car registration will begin at 8 a.m. Registration will end at 11:30 a.m., and
Cars will be entered in one of 18 classes sponsored by local businesses. The first six classes are devoted to antique cars ranging from 1900 to 1999. Categories for street rods and street machines are included, along with classes for Camaros, Firebirds, Barracudas, Javelins/ AMXs, and Mustangs. Corvettes, trucks, motorcycles, and farm tractors will each have a class, and an open class will be designated for vehicles built from 2000 to 2024. Class 17, which is for cars, trucks, and motorcycles that are not yet 25 years old, has
A new and improved food bank
BY ANN MEAD ASHThe Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank had a rough turn of the year, but Dixie Adams, who coordinates the pantry, could see the blessing in the events. “Our freezer broke in December 2023,” reported Adams. “We had a flood in January.” The pantry has now reopened with enhancements. The food bank is larger, and it has a commercial refrigerator and freezer. “We have a brand-new floor, and it looks so much better,” said Adams.
The Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank is located in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 105 W. Main St., Terre Hill. The pantry is open the third Thursday of each month from 1 to 6 p.m. First-time participants are asked for identification. “I confirm their address and phone number and how many are in the family to determine the size groceries they get,” said Adams, who added that to utilize the food bank, recipients must live in the ELANCO School District and not participate in other

been a popular class, according to Kilhefner. “(Cars in that class) can win prizes just like the other classes,” he said, pointing out that the 2014 Challenger Snader brought to the park is a “perfect example of what can go
into that class.”
Class 18 is for cars that have been judged by the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) and have scored a First Juniors or Seniors award.

Celebrating bluebirds at Fairmount
BY ANN MEAD ASHOn April 22, Dean Rust, president of the Bluebird Society of Pennsylvania, visited Fairmount to share a presentation detailing the care and feeding of bluebirds coupled with interesting facts about these native birds.
Both Fairmount residents and nonresidents visited the Wheat Ridge Gathering Room for the presentation, which included information about native plants and predators, as well as a warning about the dangers of ticks.
“Observing bluebirds in the nest box is a celebration of life,” announced Rust, who attends to 450 nest boxes on 22 trails. A few years ago, Rust gave up five of his trails, but he still finds himself heavily involved from April through August, overseeing trails in both York and Lancaster counties, including a 50-box trail at the Lancaster Country Club.
“When you see your first male bluebird in sunlight, it’s special,” Rust noted. “You say, ‘Wow!’” Rust explained that while male bluebirds are known for their

local food banks. Each shopper is given a color designating a small, medium, or large order and a letter from A to C. “The letter determines where they set their groceries while they shop,” said Adams, who noted shopping is limited to three participants at a time. “Everyone gets a four-pack of toilet paper a roll of paper towels, detergent, and one miscellaneous item (in addition to food items),” said Adams, who noted the bank has been serving up to 40 families a month since the spring of 2023. Participants are encouraged to bring their own shopping bags.
Each month, food bank organizers post at least one recipe that can be made with recent offerings such as a carrot casserole and a recipe for carrot soup. The enlarged food bank includes a stock room and a
spot for children’s activities such as reading or writing on a chalkboard. Books for adults to take out have a designated corner in the children’s room.
According to Adams, unexpired food items that the pantry needs regularly include soups. Nonfood items requested include toilet paper, paper towels, and unscented laundry detergent in small containers. A brochure for the food bank asks for donations of items such as peanut butter and jelly, pasta, boxed meal kits, cheese slices, eggs, hot dogs, fish sticks, chicken patties, condiments, juice, cake mix, and icing. Fresh garden produce is available year-round at the food bank, and donations from local gardens are accepted during the summer months. Monetary donations are welcome, as well.
In addition to St. Paul’s UMC, area churches that help supply the bank with food items and volunteers are Bethany Grace Fellowship, St. John Center Lutheran Church, Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community, Mount Culmen Evangelical Congregational Church, St. John’s Center United Church of Christ (UCC), Churchtown UMC, Terre Hill Bible Fellowship Church, Vibrant - A Christian Church, Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, St. Paul’s UCC, Pine Grove Church, and Bowmansville Mennonite Church.

bright color, the females always have a gray head. “The juveniles are speckled with a white eye ring,” said Rust, who pointed out that during the fall molt, the males lose the white eye ring. He shared that more feathers are also added in the fall to keep the birds warmer in winter. “I love to see bluebirds in the snow,” said Rust, who noted that birds in Lancaster County have been staying during the winter. “They have to change their diet entirely,” he pointed out, stating that when insects are not present, the birds will eat suet, nuts, and berries.
Bluebirds may build nests as early as January. “They do a love dance,” stated, Rust, who described the birds’ prancing and twitching motions. Bluebird eggs vary in color from very light blue green to white. “During the brood season - April, May, June, July - the female pulls feathers off her belly to create a brood patch,” Rust explained. By putting the brood patch against the eggs, the female can get them to the proper temperature to develop and hatch. The male cannot hatch the eggs alone. The female turns
the eggs regularly to keep the yolk from sticking to one side. The turning and oils from her body will give the eggs a healthy sheen.
Rust noted that while both parents build the nest, the female tends to be the master builder, bringing more material from which to fashion a home that will be flat toward the back and have a front ledge where the parents stand to feed the babies. “The parents feed the babies every five to 10 minutes from sunup to sundown,” said Rust, who explained that the babies hatch with only a small amount of down and lay still for about three days. After 18 days of being constantly fed a diet of crickets, grasshoppers, and other proteins, the fledglings are ready to leave the nest. At that point, the parents take them away from the nest to teach them how to forage for food.
According to Rust, bluebirds favor native plants along with insects. “Native plants benefit bluebirds,” he stated. “They love dogwood berries, holly berries, and juniper berries.”
Unfortunately, bluebirds also
Church posts Fun Day in the Park
Grace Church will host a Fun Day in the Park on Sunday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Grater Park on Cloister Avenue in Ephrata. Members of the Ephrata community and surrounding areas are invited to attend.

fall prey to native predators.
“Male sparrows will kill bluebirds in the box,” Rust said, adding that rat snakes will destroy eggs, and squirrels will move into the boxes. Raccoons are a special issue, and Rust recommended that those who tend bluebird boxes put up a mechanism to keep raccoons out.
“Raccoons come at night when you’re asleep and the mother is asleep,” he said, noting the nocturnal predators can clean out a bluebird box. “They know it’s worth climbing up there.”
As part of the presentation, Rust discussed the first recorded
sightings of bluebirds in Jamestown, Va., in 1607. “Bluebirds are only found in North America. It’s our bird,” he stated, noting that the three types of bluebirds are the Eastern bluebird, found in Lancaster County, along with the Western bluebird on the West Coast and the mountain bluebird, found in the Rockies.
Fairmount, a nonprofit retirement community founded in 1968, is located on two adjoining campuses in Ephrata. Readers who would like to know more about the organization may visit https://fairmounthomes.org.
Temple Avenue to perform at park
Temple Avenue, a musical group that puts its own spin on jazz and swing standards, will perform on Sunday, May 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Eicher Arts Center, 409 Cocalico St., in Ephrata Borough’s Grater Park. Admission is free.
In 2011, pianist Colin Mekeel, then a high school junior, started the Lancaster-based Temple Avenue jazz group with friends who were enrolled in the jazz program at Temple University. Temple Avenue plays concerts, dances, receptions, and other events throughout southcentral Pennsylvania. Many of the songs in its repertoire are wellknown standards from the Great American Songbook, but the group also features some lesser-known tunes.
In addition to Mekeel,
the Temple Avenue members who will perform at Grater Park include singer Cecilia Ferneborg, alto saxophonist Mervin Toussaint, and bassist Josh Machiz.
Weather permitting, the event will take place outdoors. Audience members are urged to bring folding chairs.
Admission is free. Donations will be accepted for the Eicher Arts Center Inc.

awards will be given out in each class. Rather than bring in judges to examine the cars, the event will provide each registered car owner with a ballot to vote on his or her favorites. Entrants are also eligible for door prizes given away from 11:30 a.m. to about 2 p.m. In addition, a special Weaverland Valley Best of Show trophy will be awarded. The 2024 best of show car will be featured on the 2025 dash plaque. Winners will be announced at 2:30 p.m. Cars receiving first-, second-, and thirdplace recognition for each class will be paraded to the stage area to receive cash prizes.
Funds raised by the event will help support the Weaverland Valley Fire Department, which serves the towns of Terre Hill and Goodville. There is no charge for spectators to attend the show. Breakfast and lunch items will be available for purchase from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The show will be held rain or shine. Preregistration, which is discounted, is open until Thursday, May 30. More information may be found by searching for “Terre Hill Antique & Classic Car Show” on Facebook. Readers who have questions about the event may call 717-445-4581.
