Operating a business is a strenuous venture in the best of circumstances, and with the current economic climate, local entrepreneurs are being strained and stretched even more. But that hasn’t stopped some tenacious Lancaster County residents from pushing forward with new or expanding businesses. LaundrE-town on Market in Elizabethtown is one such emerging endeavor. After over a year of renovation and progress, the fully renovated, modern laundromat was slated for an April 1 grand opening, but state mandates and closures postponed the final stages of completion. The essential business eventually opened successfully on May 1. See Emerging Businesses pg 4

“Star Wars” Fans Feed Homeless In Lancaster

Fairmount Resident Shares Family History

By Ann Mead Ash

By Ann Mead Ash

Kaden Stetler of Lancaster, one of the founders of Rebel Cause, an organization that began feeding homeless people in Lancaster on March 19, credits “Star Wars” with the inspiration behind the group’s mission. “‘Star Wars’ has always been my inner mythology,” explained Stetler. “It’s about helping others and hope and inspiring other people to do the right thing.” Rebel Cause, a group made up of about 15 members living in the Lancaster area and beyond, was founded in 2015 with a dedication to uniting “Star Wars” fans and doing good in the community. The Rebel Cause mission statement reads in part, See Rebels With A Cause pg 2

Four years before C.J. Kurtz of Morgantown (affectionately known as “Pop”) died in 1999, he had asked his son Paul Kurtz, now a Fairmount resident, to promise to write a book based on his red notebook, which contained details of the family history. Paul spent five years researching the family genealogy and history his father had recorded, but he still was not sure the information would make a good story. Instead of giving up, Paul took a hard look at who his father was. “Pop’s life is like a puzzle, and I am putting the pieces together,” said Paul, who began to see purpose in the work as he wrote the narrative. “Pop and Mom (Elsie

Paul Kurtz, author of “Plow, Pulpit, People: We Called Him Pop,” introduced his book via a multimedia presentation to a gathering of about 20 people in the Crest View Gathering Room on the east side of the Fairmount campus on March 10.

Here are a few ways to say thank you:

Community Collaboration Meetings are nothing new in New Holland. Meredith Dahl, executive director of CrossNet Ministries, first began organizing the quarterly meetings in 2016. In the past, the meetings have been held in the ELANCO School District Community Hall beginning at 7 a.m. on designated dates. On April 28, however, the meeting, which involves representatives of dozens of community organizations, was a little unusual due to COVID-19 restrictions. First, it was held at 9 a.m. rather than 7 a.m. Second, Dahl organized the meeting as a Zoom video conference so that attendees could see and hear each other via electronic devices. Third, rather than the usual updates, community leaders discussed how their organizations were responding to the COVID-19 crisis, and they shared

words of hope. Dr. Bob Hollister, superintendent of the ELANCO School District, was first to speak. Hollister reported that the district has responded well to the crisis.

Rebels With A Cause from pg 1 “We are committed to helping the homeless in Lancaster County with dignity and compassion. Until recently, Rebel Cause aided local members of the homeless community with regular events. “We sponsored community meals on the weekends and held fundraisers for needs of the homeless community, said Stetler. “We would use whatever space was available to us, including churches and community centers. When Gov. Tom Wolf announced that all non-essential businesses would be closed, Stetler found himself out of

work. “I knew Rebel Cause was in a position to do something (for the homeless), said Stetler. “We started the very next day making food and handing it out to the homeless, and through that I became officially connected with the city to use one area to serve meals. Rebel Cause volunteers hand out dinners each evening of the week, including weekends, at 6:30 p.m. from the sidewalk on the Beaver Street side of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, which is located at 119 S. Prince St., Lancaster. Food for the meals is

donated by a large number of area contributors. The dinners are cooked at Rumplebrewskin’s, located at 834 N. Plum St. in Lancaster, a restaurant that has been closed by the COVID-19 restrictions. According to Stetler, about five volunteers arrive at the restaurant daily around 2 p.m. to start cooking. “We package meals at 5:30 and head to St. Mary’s around 6 p.m., reported Stetler. Since the group members began providing meals, they have given out an average of 700 to 1,000 meals weekly. In addition to handing out meals, Rebel Cause has opened a day center at Crossroads Mennonite Church at 401 Church St., Lancaster. The day center is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. The center offers coffee, snacks, movies,

books, art classes and art therapy, yoga classes, and live music. “We have a 20-person limit, and we are close to full each day, Stetler said. Stetler noted that about 20 volunteers per day take part in the efforts to hand out meals and run the day center. To promote safety and comply with Pennsylvania COVID-19 recommendations, volunteers wear masks reminiscent of “Star Wars characters and also hand them out to those who need them. The masks are made by MADS Enterprises in Lancaster, and Stetler reported that about 300 masks had been given away by mid-April. “ We started construction sometime around September of 2019 and faced many challenges,” explained company president Gretchen Rothstein. “Fast forward to March 20 when the stay-at-home order began, we were just about at completion.” Boasting 10 front load washers, including two extra-capacity units, 10 gas-powered dryers, complimentary Wi-Fi, a television, and change and vending machines, the startup hopes to meet a need for downtown Elizabethtown in a fresh, state-of-theart facility. The May 1 launch served to unveil only part of what Rothstein hopes to offer in the future. Such offerings may include a “wash, dry, and fold service.” While most businesses are seeking ways to stay afloat in spite of the pandemic, Hush Money Bikes of Lancaster is an enterprise that emerged to provide solutions in the midst of this unusual season. The cycle shop on North Prince Street in Lancaster city embraces a mission “to build community through personalized bicycle sales and service.” It was already in the planning stages in 2019, but the final impetus to make the company a reality came after the crisis struck. “The governor declared that bicycle repair was an essential service, but many local bicycle shops had already closed,” explained Ted Houser, one of three founding partners alongside Nathan Baker and Chris Caldwell. “Cyclists who relied on their bicycles for transportation started calling our personal phones for assistance. At that point we realized that we were in a position to help.” The ambitious trio had already laid the groundwork and was poised to spring into action when the need arose. “ We met regularly with a SCORE mentor who helped us to develop a business plan and a budget for the shop,” Houser detailed. “We quickly adapted

Good Samaritan Services partnered with eight Phoenixville restaurants and seven Ephrata restaurants for Good Sam Restaurant Week, which was held from May 11 to 18. Prior to COVID-19, many individuals and groups would cook meals on-site at Good Samaritan shelters or deliver homemade meals. These practices are no longer allowed due to social distancing regulations, but many supporters have been delivering takeout meals to shelter facilities. During Good Sam Restaurant Week, supporters were encouraged to purchase takeout from local restaurants and have it delivered to the organization’s shelters. Restaurants providing takeout were featured to encourage donors and individuals to support their local economy while providing meals to participants in local shelters. Community members are invited to continue purchasing takeout from local restaurants and having it delivered to

Good Samaritan Services shelters throughout the month of May. Those who would like to participate can sign up at www.goodsamservices.org/2020/05/goo d-sam-supports-local-businesses to reserve a day to deliver meals. Good Samaritan Services provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness. It offers emergency shelter, transitional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. Approximately 400 men, women, and children are served every year. Good Samaritan also offers many financial stability programs, job training programs, and family strengthening programs that holistically address the needs of its clients. Locations are available in Phoenixville, Coatesville, Ephrata, and Lancaster city. To learn more, readers may visit www.goodsamservices.org.

Paul described the persecution of the Anabaptists in Switzerland, noting that they could not own land, but that the government allowed them to farm wasteland, where the Anabaptists developed techniques that made the land more fertile. Four of Adam’s descendants came to America in 1742. “They had accumulated some wealth and were able to buy farms and help other Amish coming over (to America), noted Paul. The four brothers were Hans Kurtz, who lived in Womelsdorf; Stephen Kurtz, who settled in Myerstown: Jacob Kurtz, who lived near the location of Oregon Dairy today; and Abraham Kurtz, who lived near the intersection of Peters Road and New Holland Road in New Holland. “Pop’s father was Jacob, explained Paul. Paul recalled that two days before his parents made the final payment on their farm mortgage, they took the children in their 1937 DeSoto to a town in Maryland, where his father conducted a service in a

Individuals must have video or phone connection to attend. Mental Health America of Lancaster County educators Lois Walters and Dennis Walters will present “How to Balance Caring for Our Wounded While Caring for Ourselves. To learn more, readers may visit www.stopsuicidelancaster.org. The training will help attendees identify warning signs of suicide as well as address simple methods of communicating to hurting individuals and de-escalating heated situations. Additionally, crisis situations or critical incidents can occur within the community, requiring a plan of action to handle such situations, especially during social distancing. Steps toward selfcare and resiliency will be emphasized along with a review of community resources. Also, attendees will be encouraged to share their concerns with a panel of experts in the suicide prevention field. The presentation will cater to church pastors, clergy and staff for crisis management of potential critical situations in the church; however, anyone who experiences frequent demands for support and services is welcome to attend. home, the district is also providing meals. “We are feeding the children, averaging a little over 12,000 meals each Tuesday,” said Hollister. Meals, which include five breakfasts and five lunches given out at one time, are available for anyone ages 1 to 18 living in the area. “If you have a child, bring (him or her) on Tuesday, and we will provide meals,” said Hollister. Meals are distributed at Garden Spot High School, 669 E. Main St., New Holland, each Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Readers with questions about the service may email jami_leisey@elanco.org. New Holland Mayor Tim Bender extended special thanks to first responders facing special challenges during the current situation. He also noted the sacrifices of those who are remaining home and not working. “It has been amazing to see this community as a whole adapt,” shared Bender, who praised the patience he has witnessed in area residents. “I am so proud of everybody … and how people have pulled together to support one another. We are a resilient group.” First responders including New Holland Police Department chief Bill Leighty, Garden Spot Fire Rescue representative Nick Good, and New Holland Ambulance Association EMS chief Darrel Fisher also spoke. Leighty noted that the call volume to the police has been lower, an occurrence he called “a testimony to the community.” He added, “We are here to serve this community and walk with you through this. When we see that progression forward, we will be there working with people.” Fisher reminded attendees that the ambulance association is made up of volunteers who leave the safety of their homes to don personal protective equipment and respond to calls that may involve COVID-19 patients. He added that because of extra sanitation procedures, calls that once took 90 minutes may last up to three hours. He thanked the community for remembering the ambulance crews. “When you see (volunteers, let them know they’re appreciated),” he said. “The small things mean a lot to them right now.” CrossNet Ministries continues to serve the community in a variety of ways, according to Dahl. Food is being provided in a safe drive-through system. Current items CrossNet could use include syrup, jelly, cereal, canned pasta, pasta, pasta sauce, soup, canned vegetables, personal items such as body wash and shampoo, and laundry detergent. Joan Yunginger, director of social services with CrossNet, said that the organization is helping people apply for unemployment and providing information on smart ways to use the stimulus. “We can offer support to help them to build resources,” Yunginger said of clients. Yunginger added that in the near future, area residents may turn to the ministry in greater numbers. “We anticipate when things (open up), we’re going to see an increase in need,” she said. “Right now the biggest need is prayer and reassuring people.” Bender noted that as the state allows the New Holland area to open up, patience will be necessary. “As we transition out … not everyone will be of the same comfort level,” cautioned Bender. “We must continue to respect each other where we’re at and give people space. Not everyone will be in the same place.”
