Memorial Day Pilgrimage To Mark 100 Years BY ANN MEAD ASH

he mission of the the annual Memorial Day Pilgrimage, held by the United Veterans Council (UVC) of New Holland and the New Holland Band, is to honor military veterans from the community. In 2020, when the local tradition was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns, a small delegation representing the UVC went to the cemeteries to read a prayer and observe a moment of silence. The pilgrimage continued in 2021, and this year, the annual event, which started in 1922, will observe its 100th anniversary. In honor of that milestone, New Holland Band trumpet player Cody Mellinger, is completing a series of videos that will take viewers along with the members of the band and the UVC to experience the early morning journey. The five-part video series, which may be viewed at www.newhollandband.org/thepilgrimage or on the “New Holland Band” Facebook page, is sponsored

T

Special Film Will Honor Local Tradition by the band and the UVC in partnership with the New Holland Area Historical Society. Mellinger based the video series on a New Holland Band piece called “The Pilgrimage,” which was written by band director Ken Laudermilch and performed at the band’s 2008 spring concert. The piece was narrated by John Zimmerman and Ed Beck. Mellinger said the piece included an introduction, the naming of the cemeteries, a funeral march, a sample Memorial Day prayer, and the snare drum filling in for gun shots during a 21-gun salute. The piece concluded with the “Armed Services Medley.” In addition to Mellinger being a member of the band, his great grandfather, Wayne Ranck, was one of the founders of the event, and he feels a special affinity for the tradition. Mellinger will serve as the guest speaker at the conclusion of this year’s pilgrimage in the New Holland Community Memorial Park when he presents “The View From Behind the Bugle.” A special film is being created by Cody Mellinger to honor the 100th anniversary of the local Memorial Day

Cavod Schedules Dance Concerts BY ANN MEAD ASH

House Of Worship . . . . . . .8

Connie Dienner, founder of Cavod, a performing arts school located in New Holland, likes to point out that one of the organization’s missions is to value the God-given gifts in each person and then to work to develop those gifts under Cavod’s goal to “Create With Purpose.” Those concepts will be on display when Cavod holds its annual spring dance concert at Lancaster Mennonite School’s Calvin and Janet High Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Thursday, June 16, and Cavod Academy will hold its yearly dance concert on two consecutive nights Friday, June 17, at 7 p.m. each evening. at Lancaster Mennonite School’s Calvin and Janet High Fine Arts Center.

“It’s a representation of all we do,” said Dienner, noting that the presentation spans two nights in order to accommodate the 350 students, age 3 through adult, who will take part. “The concert is a celebration of what they have accomplished throughout the year.” Dienner noted that performances in the genres of tap, ballet, modern, jazz, worship dance, hiphop, and creative movement will be featured under professional lighting with bright and colorful costumes. The show will exhibit the talents of both students and teachers. “People say this is completely different from any other dance concert they have seen because it’s done very creatively,” said Dienner. “Our teachers are amazing choreographers, so we may do tap with a musical theater theme or ballet with a Broadway theme.” Dienner said that the efforts to make the recital more interesting have garnered positive feedback from attendees. The 2022 dance concert will also feature a short film on the history of Cavod. MakeFilms of Lancaster produced the video, which begins with Cavod’s roots in a barn in the Pequea Valley area of the Welsh Mountains. Cavod later moved to a location on West Main Street in New Holland, then to its present spot in the New Holland Shopping Center location. The Cavod branch at Supply, 280 S. Oak St., Manheim, opened in 2021. Students in the Friends in Motion class - a weekly dance class for teens and adults with intellectual disabilities - will take part in the dance concert. “There aren’t many opportunities for (those students) to perform this way and be celebrated,” said Dienner. “Our teachers are geniuses at choreographing to the ability of these students, and it’s so beautiful. I look forward to that every year.” Tickets, which are required to attend the dance concert, may be purchased at https://cavod.org or by calling 717-354-3355. Cavod’s schedule for new classes, which will begin in August, may be found at the aforementioned website.

their vehicles in various parades throughout the year. “We recently visited a ‘50s-style diner in Delaware called Goober’s Diner,” said Swallow. “We are a pretty active club.” The club membership includes people of all ages. Swallow noted that members own a variety of makes and models of cars, including muscle cars; Brass Era cars, which are very early models; and classics like the Pierce-Arrow. “These (makes and models) will be represented at our show. We even get hot rods,” Swallow said. “Anything is more than welcome in the club.” Swallow hopes that moving the event to Morgantown will attract even more members. “By moving our show, we (may) lose some people,” he said, adding, “Hopefully, we will gain some new members from Lancaster and Berks counties.” For more information about the club and the upcoming car show, visit www.ccacc.club or www.face book.com/ChescoAcc.
