Showers +
BY ANN MEAD ASHMeredithDahl, CrossNet executive director, wants the people of the ELANCO School District to know about resources that are available to them. One of those is the Refresh Lancaster mobile shower and medical care service unit offered by a partnership involving Lancaster EMS, Lanc Co MyHome, and, in New Holland, CrossNet Ministries. “It has two shower rooms, and towels and toiletries are included,” pointed out Dahl, who added that medical consultation, hygiene supplies, and the opportunity to receive laundry cards for a local laundromat are among the Refresh offerings.
The Refresh trailer visits New Holland each Thursday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Alexandra Morales and Alix Mullins park the unit at 110 W. Franklin St., just outside the orange doors of the CrossNet Youth Center location.
Refresh is more than just a place to freshen up. Morales has phlebotomy
training, so she can draw blood for lab testing. To have blood drawn, a patient need only bring his or her doctor’s orders to the trailer. No appointment is necessary. The trailer also gives out hygiene kits, including special kits for women that contain feminine hygiene products.
“It’s
Other locations that the Refresh trailer is available in the county are behind the Salem United Church of Christ in Columbia on Mondays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.; at ECHOS in Elizabethtown on Tuesdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.; at the Pioneer Fire Company in Ephrata on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.; behind the Lancaster County Food Hub on Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m.; and at Union Community Care at 304 N. Water St., Lancaster on Fridays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Refresh Lancaster held a summer kickoff event on June 2 at Union Community Care, where representatives gave away 32-ounce widemouth water bottles filled with items such as sunscreen, socks, lip balm, snacks, toothbrush, toothpaste, and a McDonald’s gift card. The organization plans to continue to give the water bottles away to participants throughout the summer. Each filled bottle costs about $20. Those wishing to donate to help fill the bottles may visit the Refresh Lancaster page on Facebook.
“There may be people (in the ELANCO area) experiencing homelessness who need access or who have a home but don’t have those amenities,” said Dahl of the reason behind the partnership. “I am grateful (Refresh is) willing to come out here and provide this resource to the community. It’s a wonderful partnership, and it meets a need in the ELANCO School District.”

RRR to host Summer Field Day
BY ANN MEAD ASH“This is the open house of our hobby,” said Alex Van Patten, public information officer with Red Rose Repeater Association (RRR), a local organization that will participate in the national Amateur Radio Field Day. “It’s our chance to show people who have no or limited exposure to this hobby what it’s all about,” stated Van Patten.
This year’s event, known to RRR members as “Summer Field Day,” will take place on Saturday and Sunday, June 24 and 25, at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, 750 E. King St., Lancaster. This See RRR pg 4
Doing something for widows
BY ANN MEAD ASHJon Ann Frederick, who heads the Widows Connect group at Petra Church in New Holland, has vivid memories of the last mystery bus tour she took with DOsomething Ministries, a local organization that holds events for widows twice a year. “It was a really neat experience,” recalled Frederick of the trip around the county that included a luncheon with speaker Erma Zimmerman, praise and worship with Chrystal Martin, a Strasburg Rail Road train ride, and ice cream.
The events are organized by Lin Fisher, founder of DOsomething, an organization working both locally and
internationally. On April 25, more than 40 widows, including Frederick, gathered at Gordonville Community Bible Church at Fisher’s request for encouragement, food, and fellowship. Fisher contacts leaders of widow’s groups, like Frederick, at up to 10 area churches to ask them to invite their members to her events. At the April 25 gathering, the widows enjoyed appetizers, followed by a time of praise and worship and a meal of ham, red potatoes, green beans, coleslaw, applesauce, a roll, and assorted pies for dessert. The tables were covered with pastel tablecloths, decorated with geraniums in a variety of hues, and set with pink and lavender colored flickering candles.

Fisher opened the event with prayer, and then the group sang “Amazing Grace,” accompanied by
Jada Esh on the keyboard. “I’m so glad each of you is here,” said Fisher, who spoke about the struggles the women have faced in dealing with the loss of their husbands and other family members. “It’s OK,” she told the group, encouraging members to be completely honest with Jesus when life feels overwhelming. “God wants to speak personally to each of you, and He knows your name,” she told the women. The group also played a game, with the winner receiving a gift basket.
Fisher first organized the group about five years ago after return-
ing from serving as a missionary in India. She began by inviting a few widows in her Intercourse neighborhood, and then she attended the free Coffee Connection program at Gordonville Community each Monday from 6:30 to 10 a.m., where she met more widows. Eventually Fisher connected with several churches, and then she began holding events. A second bus trip included a stop at September Farm, White Horse ReUzit, Hometown Kitchen, and Sight & Sound. More information about the ministry may be found at www.dosomethingforthenations.org.

event is open to the public, and the club particularly recommends stopping by on Saturday between 2 and 8 p.m. The event will close by 2 p.m. on Sunday.
RRR president Ralph Hess noted that antennae setup will be held on Saturday between 8 and 9 a.m. “There are a lot of new hams who want to see that,” said Hess. “Ham” is another term for amateur radio. The hobby invites interested persons to experiment with electronics and communications techniques. Hams also provide a free public service to communities during a disaster or emergency - all without needing a cellphone or the internet.
“Thaddeus Stevens is a perfect spot (to hold field day),” noted Van Patten. “People will have their radio stations set up, and the focus is to contact other clubs across the country doing the same thing. We hope to talk to a couple hundred (individuals) or more.”
This is the 90th year hams have used field day to demonstrate radio’s ability to create reliable communications independent of commercial networks from almost anywhere. Since 1933, amateur radio operators across North America have established temporary radio stations in public locations during field day to showcase the science and skill of amateur radio.
Van Patten pointed out that in addition to contacting other clubs in the U.S., attempts will be made to contact clubs in other countries and even hams in outer space. “We also hope to utilize the space station,” he said, noting that there is a radio aboard and that amateurs are encouraged to use the facility as a relay point. “Last year, an astronaut was participating in field day from the space station,” he added. Although RRR was not able to make contact, many clubs did. “(The astronaut) was very busy handing out contacts the whole weekend nonstop,” said Van Patten. “The equipment to do that is very basic,” he added. “For less than $30, you can build an antenna to contact the space station.”
In 2019, more than 35,000 people from thousands of locations participated in field day. “Last year, (there were even) more because the hobby is growing every year,” said Van Patten. “(There are) more than 770,000 hams (nationwide) now, and there are 28,000 in Pennsylvania alone.” Hess noted that hams range in age from as young as 7 to 102. “The hobby has changed in the last five years and really (become) attainable for a number of people,” said Van Patten. “The entry point to get involved and have a radio is less than $50.”

Born in 1934 to Howard and Judy Seymour, he spent most of his childhood in Rochester, New York. He attended Cornell University, graduating as an agricultural engineer in 1956. There he met and married his wife of 59 years, Mary S. Seymour, who passed away in 2014.Their 3 children, Sharon, Shannon, and Shaun ll, and 2 grandchildren, Hayley and Jillian, as well as his brother, Larry, survive him.
Personally recruited at Cornell by George C. Delp, president of New Holland Machine Company (now CNH), Shaun began a career of innovative engineering design work. Before retiring in 2000, he received over 60 patents, most notably for his work on the round baler. For over 25 years he was also the Zoning Officer for East Earl Township. He loved his work, and had countless hobbies, but his involvement with community service was his passion.
The New Holland Community Memorial Park, where he was board president for many years, commemorates his service with the Shaun A. Seymour Building. The Park Pool, Bandstand, War Memorial, and Children’s Playground were some of his projects. He also, as a volunteer, managed the building of the New Holland Library, New Holland Farm Show Building, and the New Holland Historical Society Museum. He worked tirelessly to rally support, asking local business leaders for monetary donations, and community members to pitch in at volunteer events. In 2004, he was recognized statewide by the PAParks and Recreation Society as the Volunteer of the Year.
He truly believed every person can make a difference in their community.
Amemorial will be held Saturday, June 10, from 1:30-3:30, at the Garden Spot Village Chapel, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the New Holland Community Memorial Park Association - P.O. Box 62, New Holland, PA17557. Online condolences may be posted at www.groffeckenroth.com. The Groff-High Funeral Home, New Holland, is in charge of arrangements.
