A Day In New Holland

BY ANN MEAD ASH

Mervin is 22 years old, but his youthful exuberance gives one the impression that he is younger. As a student at Sunny Sunbeam, one of seven centers in Lancaster and Lebanon counties that serve members of the Plain community with special needs, Mervin is quick to greet a visitor and talk about the activities he enjoys up to three days a week. He points out the stickers he puts on boxes of clothespins that the students package for Georgetown Sales. He says his favorite job to do outside is to mow the lawn behind the workshop. Barely 30-something, husband, father, and New Holland borough council member Bryant Glick sat down a while ago to talk about what he loves about the town he serves. Glick, who moved to the area from Gordonville in 2000, talked about the activities he would include if a friend from out of the area came to spend a day with him in New Holland. “I would start with the Kauffman

Building and a visit to Lickity Split,” said Glick, noting that he would begin his friend’s tour of downtown with a short discussion of the historical aspects of the building. From there, Glick would take his friend on a short walk across Main Street to the Tannery Antiques, where he would introduce his friend to owners Linda Dibartolo and Bill Heagy. “It’s more than a flea market,” shared Glick, explaining that the couple buys and sells a variety of items that they ship countrywide. New Holland borough council member Bryant Glick loves his town and would love Lancaster County residents to enjoy the many benefits offered there.

This year’s Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) Car Cruise will be held on Sunday, June 13, from noon to 5 p.m. “I think if it’s a nice day, it will be a good show,” said Ray Harnish, organizer of the 18th annual cruise. “Everybody is ready to get out.” The event will be held in the parking lot of the GSFR station at 339 E. Main St., New Holland, this year. Harnish has exciting news for both car owners and spectators: The 2021 event will spill out of the station parking lot and onto Main Street. “Main Street will be closed

from Kinzer to Brimmer,” said Harnish, who hopes to see a few hundred vintage and modern vehicles join in. “If it has wheels and a motor, it’s welcome,” said Harnish. The cruise is open to cars, motorcycles, tractors, and more. There is no preregistration for the event, as registration will only be available on June 13. A cruise through town will be part of the event. Harnish noted that the organization will follow any CDC guidelines in place at that time with regard to COVID-19. During the car show portion, local firefighters will select vehicles to receive awards in several categories,

the owner is regularly present means something to Glick. “When you go into businesses (in New Holland), you can feel the warmth,” he said. “It’s not corporate America. (Rather,) it’s a small town where the owner works behind the counter and you get one-on-one face time with them.” Glick was 11 when he and his family moved to The Willows development, but New Holland is where Glick feels most at home. “I love this town. This is my hometown,” said Glick, who believes his feelings are shared by many other area residents. “I know a lot of people who care about the community,” he said. Listing attributes of the borough comes easily to Glick. “We have a rich history and tradition in New Holland,” he said. “New Holland is a great place to live, work, and raise a family,” he said. “It was a great childhood (home) for me, and I want to continue to give that to my children.” New Holland has retained a feeling of yesteryear, according to Glick. “The uniqueness of New Holland is that it still has that smalltown feel in the 21st century,” he said. “There’s a friendliness (because) we are a community of neighbors. We know each other, and people look out for each other.”

In the fall, Brenneman plans to matriculate at the University of Delaware, where she will study music education with minors in both theater and disability studies. She said she is glad to have attended Garden Spot because the experience has prepared her for the future and given her opportunities she appreciates.

Glick pointed out the history of the building on the corner of Main and Railroad, stating that it was once the home of Rubinson’s Department Store. “That building is part of the history of our community,” he said. Moving away from Main Street, Glick said the New Holland Community Memorial Park would be featured on his tour. “I would show (my friend) how big it is,” he said, adding that the playgrounds and the pitch and putt golf course would be highlights. “We would maybe play golf,” he noted. Back on Main Street and just around the corner from the park, Glick said he would take his friend to enjoy a cup at The Coffee Co., which was once Squireside and housed several businesses before that. As with the Kauffman and Rubinson’s buildings, Glick pointed out that the facilities are older, but have been revitalized and reused to create new businesses. “Businesses come and go, but these are people choosing to invest in New Holland,” he said. Glick said he would finish the day with a pie at Palermos Pizza and Italian Restaurant, which is found going west on Main Street. “Palermo’s pizza is made with tender loving care,” said Glick. “It’s a family-owned business.” That New Holland boasts a number of small businesses where

The centers offer a variety of activities for students. Sarah Fisher, one of five teachers at Sunny Sunbeam, said that the students gather at 9:30 a.m. for devotions each day the center is open. They also spend time singing and sharing news from their individual homes. During recess, they enjoy a yard next to the center. Students also help to mow the lawn or tend the flower beds. In addition to packaging the clothespins, the students make keychains, Lifesaver dolls, baby beads, covered clothes hangers, grape teethers, and other gift items that are sold. Freed titled her speech “We Are the Class of 2021,” and she lauded the perseverance and positive attitudes of the class members. “I wanted to write about our experience from being able to enjoy our years, to being shut out from the world because of a pandemic,” explained Freed. “I (thought) it important for everyone to know and realize that we will be the generation who will never give up as easily as others think.” Freed attended the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center at the Public Safety Training Center for the Protective Services Academy, to train to become a licensed EMT. Next, she plans to enroll in the Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences paramedic program. Freed said she is glad she attended Garden Spot because the school gave her a chance to “shine.” “I have a lot of support in the community, which has helped me mentally, emotionally, and physically,” she shared. Kha dubbed her speech “It’s a Great Day to Be a Spartan,” and it focused on the importance of relationships. “Being at the school (wasn’t) about the big events like football games; it (was) about the people who added meaning to our lives,” explained Kha. “It’s a great day to be a Spartan because of teachers who spend time learning how to work Zoom and things like that,” she said, adding that her thoughts were inspired by the isolation caused by COVID-19 restrictions over the last year. In the fall, Kha will attend Kutztown University to pursue a degree in early childhood education. She said she has appreciated her time at GSHS because of the people she has encountered there. “I have been able to build relationships and go through experiences that have helped me grow as an individual,” she said.

The Garden Spot Spartans knew they had at least one more week of volleyball to play - no question about that. The questions that did loom, however, were how well would they play that week and how many more weeks of volleyball would the Spartans compete in? Having defeated Lancaster Mennonite back on May 24 in the District Three Class 2A quarterfinals, the Spartans had earned a spot in the PIAA 2A state playoffs. Despite a 3-0 loss to York Suburban two days later in the district semifinals, the Spartans bounced

back to defeat Lancaster-Lebanon League rival Manheim Central in the district consolation game 3-0. In that Thursday evening match played at Garden Spot, the Barons played three tough sets and came up short in each one - 25-18, 27-25, 25-22. Laine King scored 13 kills for Garden Spot while Jordan Martin had a huge match - 37 assists, two blocks and two aces. Tyler Martin finished with 18 digs. Blake Wagner led Central with 15 kills and two blocks. Therefore, the Spartans entered the state playoffs as the third seed from District Three. They defeated Palumbo Academy out of Philadelphia 3-0 on Tuesday, June 1 in a match played at Schuylkill Valley High School. With scores of 25-10, 25-8 and

25-18, the Spartans dominated defeating Holy Redeemer in an Palumbo, not leaving any loose exciting five-set match (25-17, 29ends. Tanner Laukhuff had eight kills and scorched six aces for the Spartans while Tyler Martin finished with 13 digs. Jordan Martin, who had one block, distributed 24 assists. Historical Society Posts Reopening The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley (HSCV) has announced reopening dates for both of its facilities. The library and research center opened on June 2, returning to its normal business hours of Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. HSCV asks that visits during June are scheduled by appointment only by calling the librarian, Cynthia Marquet, at 717-733-1616. Beginning on Saturday, July 10, the Connell Mansion will open for museum tours with its new hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday. The HSCV plans to follow all current CDC guidelines, including proper handwashing and sanitizing, and mask wearing for those who are not fully vaccinated. Individuals who are fully vaccinated are not required to wear masks inside HSCV buildings at this time. However, protocols may change as federal and state guidelines evolve. The HSCV asks all visitors to follow posted recommendations to help protect staff, volunteers, and other visitors. As always, HSCV members may use the William and Jemima Brossman Library at no charge, while nonmembers must pay a nominal fee. The Theodore R. Sprecher Museum in the Connell Mansion is free and open to the public. HSCV is located at 237-249 W. Main St., Ephrata. For additional information, email hscv@cocalico valleyhs.org or call 717-733-1616.
