COBYS Celebrates 40 Years Of Service The Founding Of A Legacy By Ann Mead Ash

COBYS Family Services celebrated 40 years in the Lancaster area at a banquet on March 12. The numbers being held up represent the more than 60,000 unique points of service COBYS has provided over four decades to children, adults, and families in the area. By Ann Mead Ash
When COBYS Family Services held its 40th anniversary banquet celebration at Middle Creek Church of the Brethren on March 12, most of the presentations were made by video.
“ We didn’t do that because of COVID-19,” said Anne Stokes, director of development for COBYS, who was the program’s master of ceremonies with executive director Mark Cunningham. “It was just an easier way to do them.” See COBYS pg 3
found out … that he had a rare terminal condition,” recalled Sarah, who noted that her son’s problems were caused by a genetic condition called Noonan’s syndrome. Neither she nor her husband carries the gene for the condition. In the face of the news, both Sarah and Clark turned to their faith. “We know God can heal, but we know He doesn’t always heal,” said Sarah. “Every week that (Davin) was living and growing and sick, (we thought), ‘Let’s see if we can get further.’” Sarah said the situation taught her how to live in the moment. “I coped by enjoying the time we had, so we had a gender reveal party and a baby shower,” said Sarah, who noted that she has a number of photos from See Founding A Legacy pg 8

Dads have many great qualities. With Father’s Day on the way, townlively.com is giving you an opportunity to honor your dad by sharing what you love about him.
On May 1, Jan Garrabrandt, who owns The Artist’s Inn and Gallery on Main Street in Terre Hill with her husband, Bruce, posted a photo of red apples hanging from a tree with a riddle: “What kind of apple throws the best parties?” The post invited friends to comment with the answer, which was “gala,” of course. The post was the first of several leading up to May 13, National Apple Pie Day, which celebrates one of America’s favorite desserts. On that day, Jan’s recipe for apple pie, the one she has served at the inn for decades, was spotlighted in an @forbes article, along with recipes from more than a dozen other inns. Jan’s recipe, which was passed to her from her mother, Sophie Witkowski, is unusual because it uses heavy cream. “I chose the recipe with heavy cream because we are surrounded by dairy
farms,” said Jan. “Most people don’t put cream in an apple pie, so this is a way to promote dairy too.” Jan said her mother, who is now deceased, was an excellent baker, but noted “anybody can make this pie … anybody.” “I make my own crust, but you don’t have to,” said Jan, who explained that the pie is simple, calling for only a few ingredients. “Cut up the apples. Mix cream, sugar, salt, and flour, and put (the pie) in the oven,” she shared. “It’s super easy,” said Jan, who noted that the pie does not have a top crust. The story may be found by searching the internet for “Forbes, 12-charming-recipes-from-the-countrys-top-inns.” The apple pie at The Artist’s Inn and Gallery is served on a seasonal basis to complete the morning meal. “We serve breakfast, and we always serve dessert,” explained Jan, who added that breakfasts at the inn have four courses. The first course includes

COBYS from pg 1 One of the video appearances was made by Glen Faus of Manheim, who served as director of COBYS from 1980 to 2001. Faus was in the audience at the event. Also honored at the banquet were Dennis and Ann Saylor of Manheim, who, as resource parents for COBYS, have provided foster care for 116 children over more than three decades. Stokes noted that the large gathering included close to 600 meals at two separate seatings. “We do a meal at noon and the same thing in the evening,” said Stokes. COBYS was founded in 1980 by the Atlantic Northeast District of the Church of the Brethren, with one caseworker and one executive director placing teenagers in foster homes. In its 40-year history, the organization has served more than 60,000 people in a variety of settings. Recalling that in the past COBYS provided congregant care, Stokes stated that the organization once owned a house on the grounds of Pleasant View Retirement Community in Manheim. Most recently, the building, which has been razed, was used as a home for teen mothers and their children. “As the model of best practices changed over time, so did we,” said Stokes. “There was an evolution of types of clients we could handle.” Currently, COBYS provides foster care through two units. “One is the permanency unit, which is a direct contract with Lancaster County Children and Youth Services,” said Stokes. “(That group) functions as an extension of the county caseworkers.” The permanency unit has a capacity of 80 to 100 children in care depending on the number of families available. “We also have COBYS foster care resource parents that we train,” said Stokes, who noted that about 80 to 100 children may be placed with those families. Stokes explained that about 100 families are approved, but all those families may not be available to take children due to specifications in the number of children they can accept and their ages. “We are full most of the time, so we are always approving new resource parents,” Stokes added. Stokes noted that while many things remain the same about the care provided to children, there have also been many changes. “We (better) understand the role trauma plays in life and how you care for foster children and how we do therapy,” she said. The number of therapists serving COBYS clients has tripled since 2011. “It is best practice to offer trauma training,” she added. Another change has been the types of parenting classes the organization holds. “One-on-one interaction and care in a loving home has not changed, (though),” she said. According to Stokes, the dedication of the in-office staff at COBYS has remained constant as well. “There’s also a lot about the way we deliver care that hasn’t changed,” she said. “We started as a small agency with a small staff,” Stokes recalled.
Glen Faus, who served as director of COBYS for more than 20 years, was honored at the event.

Barbecue To Support Haitian Ministry By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Supporters of Haitians Helping Haitians (HHH) for Christ will hold a chicken barbecue fundraiser on Saturday, June 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mellinger Mennonite Church, 1916 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Meals and chicken only will be sold, with the former including a halfchicken, a roll and butter, coleslaw, applesauce, chips, a dessert, and a beverage. Cash and checks made out to Haitians Helping Haitians will be accepted. The proceeds will be used to
help to build a community center in Haiti, and all funds received by the end of the year, up to $30,000, will be matched by a donor, said board member and Willow Street Mennonite Church pastor Joe Sherer. HHH was founded by Elage and Betty Metzler Estime. Elage grew up in the Haitian communities of Montrouis and Charrier. He was raised in a Christian family of eight children, who were still young when their father died. Elage attended Mission Possible School, thanks to a sponsorship. He enjoyed visits from mission
teams and became involved with outreach efforts by using his small allowance to purchase bananas and bread for neighborhood children. After attending Youth With A Mission, Elage focused on serving in Haiti. He and Betty, a Lancaster County native, met in 2010, when she was part of a medical mission team, and they married in 2012. Elage’s ministry has grown and has become multifaceted. Initially, the Estimes self-funded the ministry, but a board of directors was formed to assist them and broaden the support, Sherer said.
HHH provides food support for local schools, orphanages, and prisons and runs a feeding program for 18 children. The organization offers English and music classes taught by local teachers. HHH holds yearly seminars for pastors, and it helped a local church acquire land and construct a building. During the summers, HHH hosts camps for 400 children. Additionally, the organization brings North American medical teams to conduct clinics. “In everything we do, we A chicken barbecue fundraiser at Mellinger Mennonite Church include Haitians working on June 13 will raise funds to support Haitians Helping See Barbecue pg 6 Haitians for Christ, which was founded by Elage Estime.

The proposed community center will be used as an education hub to teach job skills, such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, music, English, sewing, and more. “If long-term sustainable change is to take place in Haiti, it will be the results of Haitians coming to know Christ, growing in discipleship, learning job skills, and being equipped to take responsibility for change in their communities,” Elage asserted. “We’d love if you would pray for HHH and its ministries,” Sherer said. “We would also love donations either for the community center or for the general fund.” For more information about HHH, readers may visit https://haitianshelping haitians.org. the hospital for four days. Following the surgery, her son was wrapped in blankets and brought to her. “It was great to meet him, even though he wasn’t there in spirit, because there was the connection (from carrying him),” said Sarah. “It was such a great experience to have him all day.” Sarah learned that she was able keep her son with her because Women & Babies Hospital has a piece of equipment made in the United Kingdom called a CuddleCot. “I had never heard of it,” said Sarah, who noted that the CuddleCot, which had been donated to Women and Babies by another family that lost a baby, is a cooling device that extends the time parents can spend with a child who has been stillborn or died shortly after birth. “We kept him (with us) for three days,” said Sarah. The availability of the CuddleCot was the beginning of a journey that led Sarah and Clark to found Our Baby’s Legacy, with a mission to “provide families of pregnancy and infant loss with tools for comfort, community for support, and an opportunity to create a legacy for their child.” The CuddleCot was not the only comforting experience to inspire Sarah, whose sister had added weighted beads to a stuffed bunny for Sarah. “There are companies that make weighted teddy bears for people who are grieving, (whether) it’s the loss of a child or another kind of grief,” said Sarah. “There are a lot of studies about how physically holding something weighted helps.” The stuffed bunny now holds Davin’s ashes and a recording of his heartbeat. “It has created this little representation (of Davin),” said Sarah. “I still hold it and travel with it. I include it in photos. It has become a memorial to him.” Around the first anniversary of her son’s birth, Sarah wanted to do something special to commemorate

throughout her pregnancy. On Aug. 1, 2018, Sarah noticed she did not feel Davin moving as often as usual. “We went to the doctor, and they did an ultrasound,” said Sarah. “There was no heartbeat.” The condition had caused Davin to have hydrops - a fluid buildup in areas of the body - that was too hard on the baby’s heart. Sarah’s body was swelling as well from the excess fluid. A vertical C-section was scheduled for Aug. 2. When Sarah was being prepped for the surgery, she asked one of the attending medical professionals how long she would be allowed to hold her son. “She said, ‘As long as you are here,’” recalled Sarah, who knew she would be in bed in

The pie promotion was the brainchild of Marie Coder, a public relations professional working with the Association of Lodging Professionals (ALP), of which Jan is a member. “(Coder) wanted to help the B&Bs that are all closed,” said Jan, noting that Coder is
known for her part in the Jersey Strong campaign that helped restore business to the Jersey shore after Hurricane Sandy. The idea behind the apple pie promotion was for ALP to help bed-andbreakfasts and small inns shuttered by COVID-19 restrictions. “To get the word out that we are still here,” said Jan. Jan noted that she was impressed with the campaign. “It was a very organized approach to

“We have always been focused on the one child in front of (each caseworker) … the one case … that one family and how (staff members) provide focused care for each of (those cases).” Stokes said that this focus has remained the same even though the number of families COBYS serves has grown. “We have maintained with all of our workers (the goal to always) provide that quality of care,” she said. Cunningham summed up the service COBYS has provided for four decades, saying, “For 40 years, our mission and guidance by Christian faith remains the same, but has been strengthened. Our level of care is the same, but renewed through deeper understanding and resources.” Readers who would like to know more about COBYS may visit www.cobys.org.

Pressure Canner Dial Gauge Testing Available Penn State Extension will be testing dial gauges for dial gauge pressure canners differently this summer due to COVID-19 risks. Clean gauges or lids can be dropped off at a designated location for testing, and customers will pick the gauge or lid up on a later date. Testing is free. Dial gauge pressure canners need to be checked for accuracy each year. New canners and new gauges should also be tested. Pressure canners with a weighted gauge do not have to be tested for accuracy because they cannot go out of calibration. Testing this year will be completed over a two-week period in June. Drop-offs and
pickups, all at Good’s Store locations, will be as follows. At Good’s Store at 2499 Stiegel Pike (Route 501 North), Schaefferstown, or at 333 W. Fourth St., Quarryville, people may drop off gauges on Monday to Wednesday, June 15 to 17, and pick them up on or after Friday, June 19. They may also drop off gauges on Monday to Wednesday, June 22 to 24 and pick them up on or after Friday, June 26. At Good’s Store at 1338 Main St., East Earl, or at 1686 W. Main St., Ephrata, gauges may be dropped off on Monday to Thursday, June 15 to 18, and picked up on
or after Saturday, June 20, or they may be dropped off on Monday to Thursday, June 22 to 25, and picked up on or after Saturday, June 27. Dial gauges may also be tested for free at the Lancaster County Penn State Extension office at 1383 Arcadia Road, Room 140, when the office reopens. People must call 717-3946851 and schedule an appointment. The office is currently closed to the public through Tuesday, June 30. Updates on a reopening date are forthcoming. For information related to home food preservation, readers may contact Stacy Reed at 717-394-6851 or sls374@psu.edu.
