Since its inception, the Welsh Mountain Health Center (now Union Community Care), 584 Springville Road, New Holland, has sought to reach members of the community with needed health care.
Starting in April, the new Union Community Care Mobile Care Team is continuing toward that goal by bringing health care literally to the doorsteps of members of the Plain community from as near as East Earl and Morgantown to Quarryville and Mount Joy. The team, made up of medical provider Janine Muir and medical assistant Heather Parmer, journeys out each Wednesday to homes in specific areas based on a list of requests Parmer has compiled. A circuit of visits is completed every eight weeks. In addition to the aforementioned locations, the unit visits homes in Ephrata, Lititz, Terre Hill, New Holland, Coatesville, Honey

Brook, Narvon, Parkesburg, Gap, and Kinzers.
Muir noted that Union has responded to the fact that transportation is a known barrier to care and that while telehealth can help, mobile units bring providers directly to those in need.
“I think our administration has amazing idea generators, but it’s also listening to the community,” she pointed out, adding that providing mobile care enhances the Plain Healthy program that was already in place.
“The Mobile Care Team is working to implement the Plain Healthy program, that serves the Plain population in Lancaster County,” said Muir, noting that the program includes administering vaccines and performing well child checks, as well as making house calls.
According to Parmer, members of the Plain community contact her through a special number. Parmer coordinates the best time for a visit and the amount of

For decades, New Holland American Legion Conestoga Post 662 has presented a special award to two eighth-grade Garden Spot Middle School (GSMS) students at the end of the school year. This year, the awards ceremony was held in the GSMS Stan Deen Auditorium on the evening of May 22. Assistant principal Rob Arrick welcomed the students and their families, offering special thanks to all the parents and guardians for their support and to guest Ken Wilt, commander of Post 662, for taking part.

Since early this year, Jen Watson, assistant director and youth services coordinator with the ELANCO Library, has been dealing with an empty children’s room. “Everything (was removed),” said Watson. “All the books. All the shelves. Everything.” Everything was removed from the children’s room for a
good reason. On June 1, from 10 a.m. to noon, a grand opening was held to showcase the new paint, carpet, tree fixture, teen/ community room, and an early learning room that was created out a former storage closet. The date also kicked off ELANCO’s Summer Reading Program. According to Watson, the early learning room has been designed for use by children from birth to age 5 or 6 and their families.

“(The new room has) a sensory wall and some seating for adults,” she said, adding that the room is also stocked with educational materials. She added that one focus of the room is to give new parents a place to socialize. “Some of the feedback we received from the community is that is something they liked about the library, so we wanted to listen and give them what they needed,” she said. The space is furnished with a rug, couches, and shelving for toys. Places for parents to read to their children are a hallmark of the remodeled children’s room.
Library director Anna D’Agostino pointed out that parents may bring older children as well, and that the low walls of the room allow for supervision of children in other parts of the children’s area. She also noted that a story time for babies will be held in the new room over the summer. Baby story time will be held on Mondays, June 17, July
15, and Aug. 19, at 10 a.m.
The teen/community room will offer a space for interviews and meetings for young people as well as a rental option for community groups. The former conference room was redesigned with teenagers in mind. “We wanted to bring some color in here,” said Watson, who pointed out that the ceiling was opened up and furniture replaced with
more flexible pieces to make the room feel larger. Lighting was updated as well.
“It’s a more effective teaching space as well as a conference room,” said D’Agostino.
The library is still working to raise $57,000 to cover the costs of the updates. “We have the capital campaign going on,” said D’Agostino, noting that area residents may have received a donation
card in the mail and that there are donation boxes in the library as well as a QR code on the back of the Summer 2024 Events Catalog that can be used to make donations.
“We want to say thank you to an anonymous donor for contributing $150,000 toward the construction,” she added.

“Each year one girl and one boy from the eighth-grade class are recognized for possessing and displaying the following,” said Arrick, who went on to list the characteristics set forth by the American Legion such as honor, scholarship, service, Americanism, leadership, and courage. Arrick explained that in early May, students were given the option to nominate their peers for the honor based on the criteria provided. The names of the top three boys and girls nominated were forwarded to GSMS faculty and staff, and two winners were chosen.
Wilt spoke next, saying, “It is my privilege to present the annual American Legion award to a young woman and man in the middle school.” Wilt went on to say that Legion members are proud of the recipients of the award and their accomplishments. Wilt added that the award is given for

possessing qualities that are “necessary for the preservation of protection of the fundamental institutions of our government and the advancement of society.” “It should be considered a building block in the foundation of the character of the recipients and serve as an indication of their future status as outstanding members of the community,” he said.
Wilt then announced that the 2024 recipients of the American Legion award are Brianna Gerhart and Gabriel Hoover.
Brianna is the daughter of Nick and Heather Gerhart. At GSMS, she is a member of the Student Council and the field hockey team. She has played club lacrosse. Heather said that she and Nick knew for about a week that Brianna would receive the award, and that it was not easy to keep the secret for that amount of time.
Gabriel is the son of Mindi and Sheldon Hoover. He is a member of the school football and track teams. He takes part in two running events and the high jump. He is also a member of the GSMS band and a leader in Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Although Gabriel’s parents tried to keep the award a secret, according to Mindi, she and Sheldon had to give Gabriel a few hints when he was reluctant to attend the ceremony. The two chuckled when Gabriel asked if the award was the reason his mother had asked him to wear a certain type of shirt to the event.

As part of Lancaster Water Week, Historic Poole Forge will host “Experience the Upper Conestoga: Connecting With Our River,” a free family-friendly program, on Wednesday, June 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. The event, being presented by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF), will feature a program about raptors, fly fishing information and water safety demonstrations along with free food and giveaways.
This is the second time that Poole Forge has hosted a Water Week event, which is presented annually by the Lancaster Conservancy. “The first was pre-COVID in 2019. We did a freshwater snorkeling demonstration,” said Dawn Ekdahl, Poole Forge executive director. “People were able to look at the fish, plants and water life in the creek.”
This year, there will be exhibitors located around the pavilion, which will offer hands-on activities for visitors. “The Pennsylvania Rural
Water Association will have their augmented reality sandbox. You pile sand, and it colors it based on elevation and you can see how water would flow,” Ekdahl said.
“There will also be guided tours through the pollinator garden.”
At 6:30 p.m. on June 12, there will be a presentation in the main pavilion on the plan to restore the health of the Upper Conestoga River. It will be offered by Brian Gish, CBF Pennsylvania senior watershed planner.
Other activities will include a demonstration of electro-fishing by representatives from Millersville University. “Electro-fishing is when you add a mild electric shock in the water, and it stuns the fish momentarily and they float up and you identify the species of fish you have in the creek. It doesn’t hurt the fish,” Ekdahl said, explaining that the variety of fish that can be found in a waterway is an indicator of its water quality.
Another indicator of good water quality is the presence of macroinvertebrates. “Stream or creek bugs are little organisms that live in the creek. The better the diversity and the presence of macroinvertebrates is a good indicator or how healthy the water is,” Ekdahl noted.
Other demonstrations will be provided by Stroud Water Research Center, which will present information about macroinvertebrates and local restoration efforts. CBF will have a rainfall simulator, and there will be a boating safety demonstration by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, among other exhibitors.
Raven Ridge Wildlife Center will present a program about raptor rehabilitation with live raptors. “They will talk about the importance of ‘getting the lead out’ - lead contamination and how it’s causing damage to our bald eagles and osprey,” said Ekdahl. “They will also be bringing Phoenix, a peregrine

HARTZ PT Day celebrated
Lancaster mayor Danene Sorace declared May 10 HARTZ Physical Therapy (PT) Day and surprised founder and owner Brian Hartz and his wife, Amy Walker Hartz, CFO of the practice, and their staff with a proclamation just before their third annual Spring Swing Golf Tournament at Crossgates Golf Club.
All proceeds from the tournament benefited Off the Streets, an all-volunteer organization that has assisted more than 5,070 men, women and children since 2013 to access permanent housing. The entirety of the proceeds will help to finance security deposits for those referred by social services. The HARTZ team has also joined Off the Streets volunteers on numerous moves helping to deliver furnishings and set up the homes for those who were formerly homeless.
For the past 24 years, HARTZ PT has developed a physical therapy practice with six offices and 42 employees. Brian and Amy are also committed to serving local communities. Together with the employees they motivate and through their HARTZ Physical Therapy Charitable Organization, the Hartzes spend an average of 50 volunteer hours and contribute more than $1,000 per employee in
support of local Lancaster charities each year.
HARTZ PT staff members have volunteered their time cleaning parks and adopting a local highway and they started Equipped for Life, a free medical equipment loan program. They have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars hosting events for local nonprofits and have volunteered for and participated in their numerous missions and fundraising events.
HARTZ’s signature Fall Blast 5K has raised more than $315,000 in the past 20 years benefiting A Week Away, Benchmark, Gigi’s Playhouse, Off the Streets, Power Packs, Hospice of Lancaster County, The Lancaster Science Factory, Girls on the Run and Aaron’s Acres. In addition, the practice’s annual Feed the Need Spring Food Drive has collected thousands of pounds of food for Water Street Mission, Power Packs and Arch Street Center.
In April, HARTZ PT hosted its second annual Parkinson’s Community Walk attended by 175 walkers. The event was created through the Red Rose Parkinson’s Support Group. which the Hartzes helped form.
To learn more about HARTZ PT and its charitable organization, visit www.hartzpt.com.
lhaley@hcometz.com. There is a per-team cost to register.
A volleyball tournament will also be held. Sensenig said the tournament generally attracts more than 60 teams. Teams may register at www.lancastertournaments.com/ upcomingevents.
The cornhole tournament, organized by The Factory Ministries, will begin at 10 a.m. on June 15. More information may be found at www .thefactoryministries.com.
On June 14 at 7:30 p.m., Myron Stoltzfus will hold the Intercourse trivia competition. “There are 20 trivia questions about the town, and it’s a $100 first prize,” noted Sensenig. Fun for kids will continue on

time necessary to provide services before setting an appointment. “I plot on a map and calculate how long it will take to get there, and I call and tell them what time we will be there at their house,” she explained.
Looking ahead, Muir hopes to see the unit taking part in area gatherings. “We have these community events coming,” said Muir, who noted that at a fair or festival, the team may focus on lead testing, blood pressure checks, or glucose testing.
Nicole Specht, Union Community Care’s chief communications officer, noted that putting the unit on the road is just the beginning. “The way we are

mobilizing health care is going to evolve,” she stated, adding that mapping out the locations of those in need and listening to community members will spearhead the next steps. “(We plan on) having the freedom and flexibility to meet folks where they are (and provide care) with people they trust,” she said.
While the mobile unit puts medical services on wheels, the feel for a patient entering the customized van is not unlike that of walking into a medical exam room. “It pretty much has everything we would need to be able to provide care,” said Muir of the unit, which includes a chair, an exam table, a sink, and the
instruments and medicine necessary for the services the team plans to provide that day. There is also a television for education purposes or a virtual connection if necessary.
Muir noted that the mobile unit represents a new concept in health care by expanding the original vision of the clinic. “The idea of reaching under-resourced people has not changed,” she said. “It’s just taking that mission and making it bigger.”

Pressure canner dial gauge testing posted
Pressure canner dial gauge testing is available. Dial gauge pressure canners need to be checked for accuracy each year, and new canners and new gauges should also be tested. Pressure canners with a weighted gauge do not have to be tested for accuracy because they cannot go out of calibration.
In-person testing of clean gauges and lids will be available free of charge at Good’s Store, 1127 S. State St., Ephrata, on Monday, June 17, from 1 to 3 p.m.; Good’s Store, 2499 Stiegel Pike (Route 501 North), Schaefferstown, on Monday, June 24, from 1 to 3 p.m.; and Good’s Store, 1338 Main St., East Earl, on Tuesday, June 25, from 1 to 3 p.m.
Drop-off testing will also be offered for free. Several dates are available: drop-off by Saturday, June 15, at Good’s Store in Schaefferstown, Ephrata, or Quarryville, with pickup on or after Tuesday, June 18; drop-off by Saturday, June 22, at Good’s Store in Schaefferstown, Ephrata, or Quarryville, with pickup on or after June 25; drop-off by June 17 at Good’s Store in East Earl, with pickup on or after Wednesday, June 19; and drop-off by June 24 at Good’s Store in East Earl, with pickup on or after Wednesday, June 26. Dial gauges may also be tested for free by appointment at the Lancaster County Penn State Extension office, 1383 Arcadia Road, in room 140. To schedule an appointment, call 717-394-6851.
