Heroes Among Us VFW Post Celebrates 75 Years

ed, white, and blue streamers were twisted across the ceiling of the Charles Ludwig Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 7632 at 755 Rancks Church Road, New Holland, on May 15. The smell of burgers cooking behind the building wafted through the open door and into the hall. At the counter, Alan and Sue Noll helped serve cake and cookies along with the burgers. Just inside the front door, tables of memorabilia were set up for visitors to peruse. Members and friends of the VFW had gathered to celebrate 75 years of service to the New Holland community. Recently elected post commander Michael Martin welcomed the gathering of about 30 to the Charles H. Ludwig Post 7632 New Holland. He explained that the actual anniversary was earlier in the year, but COVID-19 restrictions postponed the celebration. In March, then post commander Norm Brower died, and the event was postponed to May.

Reaching Out To Support Grieving Parents

“Veterans giving back to the community and taking care of their own is an incredible example to all of us and should be honored.” but when we get out, we keep serving veterans and their families in our community,” he said before presenting the Diamond Jubilee Award to the Charles Ludwig Post. “You should be very proud,” he concluded. Pennsylvania Sen. Ryan Aument lauded Brower as a pillar of the community, noting that Brower was active with Garden Spot Fire Rescue as fire police captain. He also looked back on

the history of the post, noting it w a s n a m e d fo r P e n n s y l v a n i a native Charles Ludwig, a Marine who was killed in action in 1942. “It is after an American hero that this VFW post is named,” he said, adding that the post has a strong reputation for the highest quality of service. He expressed his thanks to those who had served and noted that as a VFW member he is excited about the future of the organization. U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker brought a certificate of recognition and a flag that had been flown over the United States Capitol in honor of the post. “Thank you to each of you. You are the true heroes among us,” See Heroes pg 11

In July of 2020, Dan Steinman, who is now a BASIS ministry assistant, retired from his job as a maintenance mechanic to become a representative for the ministry. “Never did I picture I would be doing anything like this when I retired,” said Dan. In fact, after Dan and his wife, Phyllis, lost their son, Andy, in an auto accident four years ago, Dan did not initially attend BASIS meetings. But when Phyllis came home from meetings she attended in Akron, Dan had questions for her. “Nobody ever pictures losing a child,” stated Dan. Now, Dan wants to let those who have shared his experience of losing a child know that BASIS is there for them. “Your heart just goes out to people,” said Dan, who added that the loss of a child can lead to a shift in a parent’s social network. “Everyone is there at the beginning, but the friendship circle changes (in time),” explained Dan, who noted that BASIS brings grieving people together to walk beside each other. When Dan felt God calling him to join the ministry, he trained to become an associate. “(The training) changed the way I looked at things,” he said, noting that he learned about different ways individuals handle grief. Dan acknowledged that because men and women often grieve differently, BASIS has styled the

Members of the Red Rose Repeater Association will participate in the national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise on Saturday and Sunday, June 26 and 27, at 773 County Line Road, Gap. This event is open to the public, and the club particularly recommends stopping by on Saturday between 2 and 6 p.m. The event will close by 2 p.m. on Sunday. For more than 100 years, amateur radio - also called ham radio - has allowed persons from all walks of life to experiment with electronics and communications techniques, as well as provide a free public service to their communities during a disaster or emergency, all without needing a cellphone or the internet. Through amateur radio, people can explore electronics, physics, meteorology, and numerous other areas of science. Field Day demonstrates ham radio’s ability to create reliable communications independent of commercial networks, under adverse conditions from almost anywhere. Since 1933, amateur radio operators across North America have established temporary radio stations in public locations during Field Day to showcase the science and skill of amateur radio. In 2019, more than 35,000 people from thousands of locations participated in Field Day; last year, participants numbered almost 19,000. Anyone may become a licensed amateur radio operator. There are more than 725,000 licensed ham radio operations in the United States ranging in age from 9 to 102. The pandemic and consequent mitigation efforts have spurred the ministry to expand its offerings. Citing rising suicide rates and COVID-19 losses, Dan noted, “Families need to connect, and we are looking to branch out to other churches throughout the county.” Dan is meeting with pastors and heads of ministries to find ways to bring the support BASIS offers to new places in Lancaster County and beyond. Currently, two meetings are held monthly in Lancaster County - one in Paradise and the other in Akron. Masking and social distancing measures are used to promote safety during the meetings. Calderon added that because the youths are willing to work and grow as performers, he has been able to push and challenge them further. “And they have risen to each occasion,” he noted. Performer Elle Herson, age 14, said that she hopes audiences enjoy the enthusiasm she and other performers put into the show. “It’s fun to work with others who enjoy using the stage as an avenue to connect with other

ticipants can communicate directly with each other. Cutler explained that it is a mission of LCCF to help achieve goals that are on the hearts of the people in Lancaster County. “We are connecting and investing in things people care about so those things can continue in the long term,” she said, noting that the project encourages reflection on things that are really important to people. “Our role is coming alongside people to help support their passions,” she explained. Spangler noted that the project takes a different approach to fostering connection. “What’s unique about Snapshot is that we’re focusing on the ways that we care about the community,” he said. “It’s not just my interests, but these are the things I want to sustain. That’s a stronger way to start relationships.” He stated that he has been impressed by the positive way community members have reacted to Lancaster Snapshot. “(It keeps me hopeful) when people say, ‘I would love to connect with the community,’” he said.

Lancaster Snapshot is an online initiative designed to encourage Lancaster County residents to share photos of people, places, and things they hold dear. “ We are deeply interested in connecting people across any number of demographics,” said Aaron Spangler, communications manager with the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF). “This idea was hatched in the midst of COVID-19 when we were literally and ideologically separated from each other,” he added, noting the project is focused on people introducing themselves by providing a snapshot as a way to a shared connection. “We wanted to tap into the humanness of each other,” said Tracy Cutler, executive vice president of LCCF. Those who wish to take part may visit www.lancaster snapshot.com, where they will be asked to submit answers to up to five questions using photographs. Spangler noted that participants may answer as few or as many questions as they wish. The questions are: Where do you live? What’s your favorite spot in Lancaster County? What’s one of your favorite things or possessions? What keeps you hopeful? What’s something you want to last forever? “The idea was to keep the questions open to get a varying degree of interpretation,” said Spangler, who noted there is space for a short caption. “There is no one way to answer these questions.” Participants will be able to visit the site, which includes a map of the county, to see their answers along with the answers of other participants. “You can zoom in (on a map) to see people’s entries,” explained Spangler, who noted that place specificity was important to see not only faces, but where people are in the county and the community. Cutler explained that the program, which went live on June 11, will run for about 12 weeks. On a regular basis, LCCF will choose random participants to receive $500 to invest in a cause or project that is important to them. “It may be something they shared in their snapshot or something else they care about,” said Spangler. In the future, the organization hopes to make the site even more interactive so that par-

Meals On Wheels from pg 1 According to Rowland, regular meals are available for a nominal fee per day with specials - which are prepared with a specific diet in mind costing a little more. “(Meals are delivered) Monday through Fridays and holidays,” said Rowland, who noted that the number of meals delivered varies. “We have New Holland, Leola, and Terre Hill routes, and the Terre Hill is a very long route,” she noted. Generally, the Leola route has nine or 10 recipients, while New Holland has 14, and Terre Hill has about a dozen. Most recipients receive both lunch and dinner. another variety of meat. A dinner entree may include sesame chicken, peapods, and rice. “The menu varies a lot,” noted Rowland, who added that soup, meatloaf, or a pasta dish, such as lasagna, may be among the dinner selections. “They have a fish that looks really good for the entree (sometimes),” said Rowland, who added that most recipients receive milk if they do not have a lactose issue. Rowland, who coordinates the deliveries with her friend Judy McKinley, said that drivers are scheduled for certain days and routes. “We like one driver and a helper to run the meals to the door,” she said, adding that students and others sometimes act as runners to fulfill community service requirements. Volunteer drivers and runners are needed to deliver meals. Readers who are interested in volunteering may call 717-354-9150. Individuals in need of receiving meals may call 717-392-4842.

Auction Will Aid Centers Mervin is 22 years old, but his youthful exuberance gives one the impression that he is younger. As a student at Sunny Sunbeam, one of seven centers in Lancaster and Lebanon counties that serve members of the Plain community with special needs, Mervin is quick to greet a visitor and talk about the activities he enjoys up to three days a week. He points out the stickers he puts on boxes of clothespins that the students package for Georgetown Sales. He says his favorite job to do outside is to mow the lawn behind the workshop. The other centers - Caring Hearts, Special Hearts Circle, Sunbeam, New Horizons, Valley Workshop, and Shady Hollow - gives the more than 80 students who attend a chance to learn, socialize, and take part in productive work. To help support the centers, organizers hold a yearly bringsomething, buy-something auction. This year’s auction will be the 15th annual benefit and it will be held on Monday, July 5, at Fisher’s Quality Dairy Sales, 3304B Old Philadelphia Pike, Ronks. The auction will begin at 11 a.m., but a variety of foods will be offered for sale beginning at 5:30 a.m. Items that will be sold at the auction include flowers and plants, toys, barbecue apparatus, carriages, swing sets, sheds, and quilts made at Caring Hearts, which will be sold at 4 p.m. A garage, which will be built on location for the winner, will also go up for bids. Food that will be available for purchase at the auction includes breakfast items such as egg sandwiches, doughnuts, breakfast logs, and coffee. Lunch items will include cheesesteak sandwiches, barbecued chicken and ribs, sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, fruit cups, french fries, and soft pretzels. Ice cream, fry pies, and baked goods will be on the dessert menu. Food may be eaten on-site or taken out, and a drivethrough food pickup will be available. See Auction pg 13

Spot Volleyball Falls in PIAA Semifinals

BY ARA GRIGORIAN

The Garden Spot boys’ volleyball team had already triumphed over Manheim Central in postseason play. Back on May 27, the Spartans topped the Barons 3-0 in the third-place consolation match of the District Three Class-AA playoffs. Back came the Barons for another showdown, this one in the quarterfinals of the PIAA 2A state playoffs on Saturday, June 5 at Manheim Township. The result was another Garden Spot victory - this one by a 3-2 margin. It advanced the

Spartans to the state semis at Central York High School against the Lower Dauphin Falcons. It was on Tuesday, June 8, where Garden Spot’s quest for a state championship trophy was halted as the Falcons posted victories of 25-17, 2516 and 25-18. Garden Spot fell to 20-4 on the year. Laine King registered 11 kills and a service ace to lead Garden Spot in those categories. Jordan Martin helped his team with 24 assists and a pair of blocks while Tyler Martin finished with a teamhigh 11 digs. Kaden Kirchhoefer and

Luke Gibbs each poured in seven kills for the Falcons. In their 3-2 victory over Central, the Spartans had to respond to a Barons comeback that made things rather uncomfortable down the stretch. With the first two sets in the books - both by the same margin of 25-20 - the Spartans were unable to score that match point until the tiebreaker fifth set. Manheim Central came back to win 2523 in the third set and won by that same score in the fourth set to make it 2-2. Blake Wagner was a difficult force to contend with as he poured in 18 kills for the Barons. Jeremiah Zimmerman led Central with four blocks and 41 assists. King was an ever more fearsome force, swinging for 21 kills for Spot. Jordan Martin was a key factor as well, distributing 56 assists. Chandler Xiong and Griffin by Mark Palczewski Witmer each served up one Garden Spot’s Joe Sharp, right, and Chandler Xiong go up to challenge a ManheimPhoto Central shot ace while Tyler Martin again during the Spartans’ 3-2, PIAA Class AA quarterfinal victory at Manheim Township on June 5. led the squad in digs with 36.
