Mixing music with fireworks
BY ANN MEAD ASHThe New Holland Band Independence Day concert in the New Holland Community Memorial Park is a longstanding tradition sponsored by the New Holland Summer Arts Program (NHSAP).
This year, Fred Hughes, who recently became the director of the band, has chosen to mix things up a little by continuing the music into the annual fireworks display that follows the concert. “We usually finish right before the fireworks,” pointed out Hughes, who said that for 2024, the band will introduce the aerial display by playing the “1812 Overture” with the fireworks coming in at the appropriate point in the music.
The concert in the park will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 5. The band will play three sets. The fireworks show will begin at 9:30 p.m., and the band will continue playing until
9:45 p.m. “(When the fireworks begin), everybody (in the park) turns their chairs around to watch,” explained Hughes. “We will play to their backs.”
In addition to coordinating music to the display, Hughes has planned a variety of other pieces, which include marches and other well-known tunes. Hughes has chosen to feature selected members of the band during the presentation. “I will bring a Dixieland group up front for a piece,” said Hughes, who noted that three trumpet players will perform together on “Bugler’s Holiday.” “Some of the (Great) American Songbook pieces will feature some of our younger members as soloists. It will be fun,” he added.
The rain date for the event will be Sunday, July 7.
The Independence Day concert is one of many musical events NHSAP brings to the park, located in the 400 block of East Jackson Street, each summer. All shows are free and open to
the public. For more information about NHSAP and a full concert schedule, visit www.newho llandsummerarts.com. NHSAP

BY ANN MEAD ASHRob Lewis and his business partner, Bruce Leibig Jr., owners of New Holland Heating & Air Conditioning, have a vision. The two would like to see American flags bordering yards along Main Street from beyond Shirk Road at the west end of town to the Blue Ball traffic light along Route 322 in celebration of the Fourth of July holiday, an initiative they call Paint The Town Red, White, & Blue.
“The idea was to be able to
BY FRANCINE FULTONThose who attended the recent Senior Connections meeting at Conestoga Mennonite Church may have been surprised to see a tent set up in the church’s fellowship hall. But they soon learned that once inside, they would be able to experience interacting with live butterflies that were brought to the meeting by Donna-Joy Jones of Hatfield, who raises butterflies as a hobby.
Known as the Butterfly Lady,
Jones was a kidney donor during the pandemic, after which she hosted a butterfly release as way to honor God for the gift of life. The butterfly release was designed to bring joy to the community, which was experiencing the isolation of the COVID lockdown, and to raise awareness of organ donation.
Since then, Jones has enjoyed raising butterflies as a hobby and sharing information about the creatures with local audiences, including church groups and

drive through town and see a tunnel of red, white, and blue as you come down Main Street (on the Fourth of July),” said Lewis.
To make that vision a reality, Lewis and Leibig will be going door to door along that corridor during the last days of June and early days of July, distributing about 2,400 flags in reusable grocery bags.
Lewis noted that Main Street residents who receive the flags may place them along their sidewalks, driveways, or flower beds prior to Thursday, July 4, if they so please.
“(Please place them) toward the roadway, so people driving can see them (if possible),” stated Leibig.
Permission for the effort was sought from the New Holland Borough, and Lewis and Leibig also contacted the New Holland Business Association (NHBA). “We have permission to put flags in the NHBA planters,” said Lewis.
Lewis spoke about the project with Mitch Dissinger, vice president and co-founder of the New Holland Area Historical Society. Dissinger recalled that at one time the side -
walks in New Holland had holders at specific intervals for flags to be displayed annually. “That’s (the feel) we’re going for, but we need community participation,” said Lewis. Leibig said that he hopes area residents will participate because New Holland is a small town with a strong “community feel.” He pointed to events such as the New Holland Fair as evidence of this sense of togetherness.

Grocery Outlet to fundraise for local food banks
Each year during the month of July, Grocery Outlet stores nationwide, take part in an Independence from Hunger (IFH) food drive to benefit food banks in local communities.
Locally, over the past seven years, Bill and Amy Clisham, owners of the New Holland Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, have raised more than $85,000 for CrossNet Min-
istries and Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank in Terre Hill. The funds were raised directly from customers at checkout. Grocery Outlet customers who donate a set minimum amount are offered a coupon for use on a future purchase.
Last year, local businesses were also offered the opportunity to participate in a Match Day
sponsorship. Business sponsorships helped to make a positive impact with customers as the New Holland Grocery Outlet raised a record $20,220 for local food banks.
On average, the store raises approximately $400 a day during its annual IFH Campaign. This year, the event will run from Wednesday, June 26, through Wednesday, July 31.

Senior Connections
senior citizens.
She began the program at the Senior Connections meeting by talking about the parts of the butterfly, including its wings and antennae, explaining that the differences between a moth and a butterfly are that moths are fuzzy and their antennae are different. “Butterflies have circles on the end of their antennae and there is no fuzz,” Jones stated. “(Although moths can be seen during the day), a moth usually comes out at night and is drawn to the light.”
She noted that there are 17,000 butterfly species in the world. “Most of them are in the rainforest and in Mexico and places far from
here,” said Jones. “Some of it has to do with temperatures and their (life) cycles and (lack of) food between the milkweed and flowers not being there.”
Jones raises painted lady butterflies, which are similar to monarchs but have a much smaller wingspan and only live for two weeks. She purchases the butterflies online.
“I never keep any of the butterflies more than a week. If they are in bad condition, I keep them inside and when I think it’s time, I will take them out and put them in my butterfly bush to keep them away from the birds,” she shared. “Because they have such a short life span, the whole idea is to get them out there to multiply and keep the next cycle going.”
She emphasized that homeowners should plant flowers like butterfly bushes and milkweed that are rich with pollen. “If you are gardener, plant flowers that help the butterflies. Since they are pollinators and now endangered, it’s important that we do our part to help the butterflies because without butterflies and bees we don’t have any food,” she stated. “Their purpose is to pollinate and keep food on our tables.”
She then outlined the life stages of a butterfly, explaining that butterflies lay eggs on a host plant, like parsley, fennel, milkweed or dill. When the egg hatches, it becomes a caterpillar, which then lives on a host plant. After 10 days, the caterpillar leaves the host plant, attaches to a tree or building and spins
a cocoon called a chrysalis from which it emerges a butterfly.
“They are totally transformed,” she said. “They emerge a different species altogether. Then they get to fly and to soar.”
She then discussed monarch butterflies, which, like birds, fly south for the winter. Monarchs migrate south to winter sites in Mexico, sometimes traveling more than 30 miles in a day. “The monarchs take part in an eight-month journey, so they live nine to 12 months,” she noted. “They (travel) from Canada and different parts of the U.S.”
The program concluded with attendees, many of whom brought their children and grandchildren to the meeting, being given an opportunity to interact with the painted lady butterflies. Jones put a sugar and water mixture meant to simulate nectar on cotton balls, which she handed to attendees as they entered the tent.
Jones also provided some instructions such as not touching the butterflies’ wings. “They will fly around the enclosure, and if I could ask you not to
(swat) at them when they land on you,” she said. “When they do land, they just (give) a little tickle. Sometimes they will land on your nose; the record for that is 20 minutes. If you washed your hair with a fragrant shampoo or a fruit-smelling one, they will land in your hair.”
“They are harmless, and I think they enjoy interaction with us as much as we do with them,” she added.
Senior Connections, open to all seniors age 55 and over, meets at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown, on the first Thursday of the month. Each session features a homemade meal held at noon, followed by a program.

To us, the best means producing a truly authentic, premium product. We start with happy, healthy cows who live at our American Humane Certified™ dairy and focus on top-quality ingredients that result in superior taste you can savor. While you may be seeing more and more “frozen dairy desserts” on the shelf, we still offer REAL ice cream made with less air & higher milkfat for a creamy bite every time.
Try it for yourself and we think you’ll probably agree!
