Show will celebrate the Mustang at 60

Gregg Kennedy has owned three Mustangs. The one currently in his corral is a 1985 5-liter in medium canyon red, but the first “Stang” Kennedy ever owned was a 1965 model he bought at Sauder’s Chevrolet in New Holland. “(The car) was 7 years old, and I paid $650,” recalled Kennedy. “I wish I still had that car.”

The Mustang, also known as the “pony” car, which was developed by Lee Iacocca for Ford, will turn 60 this year. To celebrate that anniversary, the Vintage Sights and Sounds New Holland Antique Car, Gas Engine, and Tractor Show will feature a number of “unique Mustangs and survivor cars,” according to organizer Steve Loewen. This year’s show, the 43rd annual, will be held in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland, on Sunday, July 14, beginning at 9 a.m. with breakfast items available for purchase. Cars may enter the show field at 9:30 a.m. As in the past, vehicles to be judged must be registered by noon on Saturday, July 13.

Kennedy will bring his current Mustang, which he purchased at New Holland Auto Group in 1995 for $400. “I work at New Holland Auto Group, and a customer who lives here in New Holland came in to trade it for a minivan,” reported Kennedy, who noted that the former owner comes to see the professionally restored

car at the show. Kennedy also formerly owned a 1972 Sprint edition Mustang in red, white, and blue. Because Stangs were built to appeal to young women’s eyes and pocketbooks, Mustangs were often referred to as the “secretary’s car.” “In my opinion, it’s the best sports car in the market, but I am highly prejudiced,” noted Kennedy.

Cars entered in the show will be judged in 30 classes. Judging for the Spectator’s Choice Award will begin at noon and cease at 2 p.m. For a nominal fee, spectators may obtain a ballot and vote for their favorite car. The Carl S.

Sauder and Tom Wagner memorial awards, plus the new John D. Sauder Award, will be given out at 3:30 p.m. along with the Best of Show and Spectator’s Choice awards.

Vintage sounds will include New Holland Band’s German Band at 11 a.m., Dixieland Band at noon, and the New Holland Swing Band at 1:30 p.m.

A variety of food items will be available for purchase beginning at 9 a.m. Food trucks that will sell items at the event will include Mr. Mini’s Tasty Donuts, Hen House Grilling & BBQ, D&B’z Foods, NiCE SiZE FRiES,

and Lickity Split. The New Holland Band will coordinate a beverage stand.

In conjunction with the car show, the ELANCO Library will hold a book sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the park.

This year, Loewen’s co-chair is New Holland Band member Cody Mellinger. “(Mellinger) is learning the ropes and adding his own suggestions for the show,” said Loewen. “He has some good ideas.”

Car owners who have questions about the show may contact Loewen at loewen58@yahoo.com or call 717-413-6229.

George Weaver remembers the appetizer he was served while seated next to Art Futer at the reception dinner in Longvic (pronounced Longvee), France, in 1974. Susan Ressler (then Susan Hoober), remembers that her now-husband Mike Ressler took her on their first date - a late-night river cruise on the Seine. Don Reed remembers getting lost in one of the less-savory areas of Paris while trying to go to a show that a girl he liked was attending with her family.

From July 4 through 12, 1974, 40 members of the New Holland Band and more than 20 area residents traveled from New Holland to Paris to Longvic and a town in Switzerland as part of a twin city trip. New Holland is the twin city of Longvic. The twin city program, Mike Ressler noted, was created “to encourage the flow of people, information, and ideas between communities so that both may be enriched.” Two charters - one signed in Longvic and the other in New Holland - are among the photos and artifacts from the trip that are displayed on the first floor of the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) Museum, 207 E. Main St. The

Gregg Kennedy (left) with his 1985 Mustang, Steve Loewen (center), and Cody Mellinger are all looking forward to the 43rd annual Vintage Sights and Sounds Car Show.

NHAHS Museum is currently open on Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day or by appointment. To make an appointment, please call 717-538-3079.

In the display, Mike Ressler has included the itinerary for the trip and the names of all those who journeyed to France. He recalled that a stop at the Suresnes American Cemetery to perform a memorial service led by Ed Beck was part of the band’s first day in France. A photo including then-mayor of New Holland Willis Houck and band member Mike Terry playing taps is among the black-and-white pictures

taken by Charlie Rice that are in the display.

The arrival at Longvic included a parade into town and a reception with much food and drink. “It was a five- or six-course meal of extravagant food sponsored by the people of Longvic,” recalled Mike Ressler. Following the meal, the band played in the courtyard outside the building, and the Americans and French attendees joined hands and skipped to Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” The American contingent also visited the Sperry plant located in Longvic at that time.

Another highlight of the trip was boarding a bus to give a concert in a town in Switzerland. Weaver, who has consistently been a member of the band since before the trip, recalled seeing the fields of red poppies from the bus window. In the Swiss town, the band led a parade and then played in a gazebo. “The whole town shut down,” recalled Weaver. “The stores closed, and everybody came to the concert.”

“The highlight of the final day was a concert under the Eiffel Tower,” stated Mike Ressler. “The

sound reverberated off the ironwork above us.”

At 14 years old, Reed was the youngest band member to make the trip. The oldest was Clyde Hall, who was 73 at the time. Organizers took pains to have travelers stay in the homes of those who had similarities to them. Beck, who owned Beck’s Funeral Home, stayed with an undertaker, and Weaver with a family that had children about the same ages as his own. His French host was an English major, so they were able to converse easily. When Longvic sent a contingency to New

Holland later on, the host stayed with Weaver and his family.

Mike Ressler recalled that Sam Zimmerman, band director at the time of the trip, flute player; Luke Haines; and Beck spearheaded the effort to visit Longvic. “Sam served with an Army band in World War II,” said Mike Ressler, who added that Haines was a bomber pilot who flew missions in France, and Beck was a veteran who served stateside. Susan pointed out that in 1974, only 30 years had elapsed since the

Beekeeping seminar

Fairmount will host a seminar about beekeeping on Thursday, July 11, at 1:30 p.m. in the Wheat Ridge Gathering Room at 2100 Wheat Ridge Drive on the west side of the Fairmount campus.

The speakers will be Fairmount resident Dale Long, who recently facilitated the installation of two beehives on the retirement community’s campus, and Daryl Bender, a fellow beekeeper who has given many presentations to schools and other organizations. Both Long and Bender enjoy helping young people get started in the hobby of beekeeping. Topics of discussion will be the importance

of honeybees, the life cycle of bees, bee communication, strategies that honeybees use to survive, and where to find local honey. There will be opportunities to ask questions. This event is free and open to the public. No reservations are needed. For directions, visit www .fairmounthomes.org.

“The band played classic American music and recognizable French music, and everywhere we played, the crowds went crazy,” said Mike Ressler.

Weaver noted that throughout the French countryside, the welcome for the Americans was warm. “People in France remembered that (that the U.S. played an important role in the liberation of France),” he said. “They rolled out the red carpet for the American band.”

The contest was open to ninth-grade students across Rotary District 7390, which includes more than 40 Rotary clubs in seven counties throughout southcentral Pennsylvania. The essay contest - established as a way to teach the community’s future leaders the ethics of Rotary - asked students to offer their thoughts on the importance of community service in their lives and include how Rotary’s Four-Way Test impacts their thinking.

The Four-Way Test is a series of questions that Rotary members use to conduct their personal and professional lives. It asks the following four questions of the things a person thinks, says, and does: “Is it the truth?” and “Is it fair to all concerned?” as well as “Will it build good will and better friendships?” and “Will it be beneficial to all concerned?”

The Rotary Club of Eastern Lancaster County presented Emma with the citation and check during the club’s May 23 meeting. While the district selected the winning essays, the club was impressed with the amount of volunteer work carried out by Emma.

The Rotary Club of Eastern Lancaster County has been serving the community since 1944. To learn more, visit www.facebook. com/ELANCO.Rotary, email elanco.rotary@gmail. com, or attend one of the club’s meetings, held every Thursday at 7:30 a.m. at Yoder’s Restaurant, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland.
