Hot fun in the summertime
Third cadet camp held by GSFR
BY ANN MEAD ASHNow that several former Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) cadet camp attendees have gone on to join the fire company, Nick Good, director of administration for GSFR, noted that even when campers do not join up, the endeavor helps boost recruitment. “The cadets go back to school and talk about camp,” he reported. “They say, ‘Hey, you should come do this next year.’ Even if they don’t become a firefighter, they still know about the fire service and can talk about it to their friends.”
This year’s five-day camp for youths ages 10 to 14 - the third such summer program - started on June 12 and concluded on June 16 with a graduation ceremony at the station, 339 E. Main St., New Holland. Camp is held at the station and for
one day of the week at the GSFR training facility on Reservoir Road. “(Reservoir Road) is where we keep our junked vehicles,” explained Good. “If we’re doing any type of vehicle training, it’s easier to take (the campers) there.”
Each day of camp nearly 30 cadets lined up for physical training at 9 a.m. before being divided into groups of up to seven with two firefighters leading each group.
The camp is designed to keep the participants active throughout the day. “Eighty percent is hands-on in some way,” said Good. “They go up the ladder. They use an actual hose line. They get to work with real fire when learning about fire extinguishers.” Some of the time is reserved for learning about the roles of other types of emergency workers. “New Holland EMS comes out, and the New Holland Police

Woman of many talents
BY ANN MEAD ASHDore’Ann Weaver has always had artistic talents. Over the years, those skills have expanded into a variety of areas, including costume and set design and construction and painting a scrim backdrop the size of a gymnasium floor. However, Dore’Ann was a little unsure of exactly how to use those talents when she received a call in July of 2022 asking her to serve as art director for a DBM Films production called “Little Heroes.” “I said, ‘I am from theater. What does that mean?’” recalled Dore’Ann. Fortunately, her friend Robert Amaya, who played the Snake King in the movie “Courageous,” was able to provide background information.
“Little Heroes” focuses on four young friends who discover something is not right at their usual swimming hole. They soon uncover a mystery

Taking a swing against poverty
BY ANN MEAD ASHMore than 25 years ago, HOPE International, a Christ-centered global nonprofit that equips men and women to break the cycle of poverty for themselves and their community, gave out its first micro loan in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine. Just recently, Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, recounted the story of a Ukrainian blueberry farmer named Anastasiya. “Anastasiya decided not to let the war cause her to leave, which is a big deal,” said Rutt. “She had gotten a loan from HOPE prewar for seedlings for her blueberry farm, and in 2022, she was able to secure a second loan for irrigation to increase her crop.” Last year, Anastasiya and her family harvested
their first blueberry crop. HOPE has given out a total of $1.2 million in Ukraine since the war began. HOPE recently surpassed $1.6 billion in micro loans with the goal of restoring dignity in families’ lives. To raise funds to reach such goals, HOPE holds a yearly golf tournament. This year’s fundraiser will take place in three locations: Turf Valley Resort, Ellicott City, Md., at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14; Iron Valley Golf Club, Lebanon, on Friday, Sept. 15, at 7 a.m. and 1 p.m.; and Wyncote Golf Club, Oxford, on Sept. 15 at 8 a.m. Those who wish to register to play or who want to provide a sponsorship may do so at www.hopeinternational.org/golf by Friday, Sept. 1.

Fraktur workshop posted
Mennonite Life will present a hands-on exploration of the Pennsylvania German art of fraktur on Friday, July 28, from 1 to 4 p.m. Under the guidance of fraktur artist Emily Smucker-Beidler, participants will learn what birds
influenced the art form’s earliest nature motifs, as well as the history behind its characteristic polka-dot, checkerboard and striped patterns. Each participant will create his or her own 5-by-7-inch fanciful fraktur bird.

HOPE International
Rutt emphasized that HOPE focuses on all domains, not just the material but also personal, social, and spiritual.
“It’s exciting to see what God can do through what He puts in the hands of the clients we serve around the world,” he said, adding that as the war in Ukraine continues to rage, HOPE continues to offer loans in that country and pray with clients. “God is working,” said Rutt. “We see more and

more people coming to Christ through interaction with our teams and the churches even through the destruction and disillusionment of the war,” he said, adding that many people who had no interest in spiritual discussions prior to the war want to pray with the HOPE team. “I believe it will have an impact on the generations to come,” he said. Rutt pointed out that before the war, 5.5% of Ukrainians lived

below the poverty line. That number is now at 24%, and it is estimated that it could take a decade for the Ukrainian economy to recover.
Sarah Smith, content and media writer for HOPE International, said that the HOPE approach offers a sustainable way to alleviate poverty and positively impact a community. “When someone takes out a loan or is saving money and starts a business, they start
employing other people in the community,” she noted.
Rutt added that sustainability is the reason HOPE has always avoided simply giving handouts to those in need. “We believe we can get to a longer-lasting solution through allowing people to use the gifts that God put in our hands. We are interested in restoring dignity, not creating dependency.” To continue to make that happen,

Dore’Ann grew up in Nashville, Tenn., where her parents were friends with set designers. As the daughter of a pastor and music director, she was involved in live church productions. After moving to Ephrata when she was 13, Dore’Ann worked on painting the set for Ephrata High School’s production of “Oklahoma!” “I learned (so much) from being part of that,” said Dore’Ann, who temporarily shelved her love of theater to work in the optical business. She rediscovered that passion after she married her husband, Craig, and the two became involved in the Ephrata Church of the Nazarene’s productions. In 1994, she and Craig built the front of a church in a barn, and she painted a huge stainedglass window perched on scaf-

Around 2012, she began sewing costumes for Cavod Community Theatre productions. Dore’Ann first became involved after her son Alex won a part in “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” directed by Stan Deen. “I am a shopper whom you can give a dime to, and I will make it look like I spent $1,000,” said Dore’Ann. “I am able to tear things apart and put them back together.” To prove her talents to Deen, she created a Glenda the Good Witch costume for less than $20 in two days. Looking back, Dore’Ann credits Deen for giving her the confidence to succeed at her craft. “Stan always brought the best out in us,” she said.
In 2018, the Weaver family moved to Stoudtburg Village in Adamstown, where Dore’Ann opened French Twist Events, planning to host tea parties, murder mystery dinner parties, bridal showers, and more, but the business was just getting started when COVID-19 restrictions hit. Undaunted, Dore’Ann went to work on local productions, including Lancaster Bible College’s “Ruth” and “Queen Esther” at Sight & Sound, and she painted sets for Servant Stage.
Dore’Ann’s heart is to see family-friendly movies made locally. “Amaya is working with state legislators to bring more film (production) into the state of Pennsylvania,” she said, noting she has joined in his efforts. “(Amaya) recognizes that we have a very rich area to make films,” she noted, pointing out the talent available in the local area.

Artists sought to create mosaic
The City of Lancaster is seeking a qualified artist or artist team for the commission of a sidewalk mosaic in a hardscaped courtyard to be located on the southeast side of the Plum Street roundabout.
The City of Lancaster Department of Public Works plans to install a permanent roundabout at the intersection of North Plum and East New streets and Park Avenue. A temporary roundabout is currently installed in its place. Construction will begin Wednesday, Aug. 30, and will be completed by June 2024.
The roundabout will be accompanied by a variety of amenities, including vegetated curbing, street trees and other foliage, a hardscaped courtyard, street furniture, and public art in the form of a sidewalk mosaic. The city is seeking an artist to complete the 40-square-foot mosaic to be installed in the concrete of the courtyard.
The city is committed to creating opportunities for local artists, be it through commissioned works or by facilitating learning opportunities for skill development. Artists are preferred to reside in or near Lancaster city, although non-local artists are also welcome to apply, particularly those who have experience working with emerging artists. Non-local artists will be asked to provide hands-on experience to one local artist throughout the artistic process.
Selection will take place using a two-phase process. A selection committee will first review applications submitted through the request for qualification. Up to three finalists will be selected by the committee. Finalists will then be invited to complete phase two of the selection process, which will include the final design proposal. Final design proposals will be reviewed by the Public Art Advisory Board.
The deadline to submit proposals is Monday, July 17. For more details, go to www.cityoflancasterpa.gov.
