CrossNet Seeks Mentors By Ann Mead Ash
CrossNet mentoring and education manager Charis Pankratz is careful to differentiate the organization’s community mentoring program from the Cross Jr. Mentoring Program, which is specifically targeted to fourthand fifth-grade students. “(The community mentoring program) does not serve a specific age group, said Pankratz. “In this program, we match a mentee, which could be anyone in the ELANCO community from second grade up, with a trained adult mentor of the same gender. The goal is to facilitate a

New Holland Pool Reopens By Ann Mead Ash
The pool at the New Holland Community Memorial Park Pool did not open by Memorial Day weekend as it has in the past, but it did open shortly thereafter. According to Leo Ward, pool manager with the park, the opening occurred on June 6, which was as soon as the pool and personnel could be ready after the facility was closed under COVID-19 restrictions in March. “Around the end of March there was a period where we shut down working at the park for two to three weeks, said Ward, who noted that repair work began again in April and that lifeguards age 18 and older were back on board in early May. In late May, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released guidelines for public pools. The Pennsylvania Department of Health informed pools that the

Those who have cancer or had cancer in the past can now find useful information, networking opportunities and comfort from other people at a new cancer support group that will meet locally. The first meeting of the new group, which is open to those age 18 and over no matter what type of cancer their doctor diagnosed, will be held on Thursday, July 16, at 7 p.m. in the conference room at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St., (Route 23), Morgantown. Meetings will run weekly on Thursdays through Sept. 3. The group will be led by Cheryl Heineman, who has overcome cancer three times. She has received training from the Cancer Institute of Pennsylvania and has the support of several local hospitals. Also on hand for the first meeting will be church pastor See Cancer Support Group pg 4

CDC guidelines and state business guidelines should be followed. “(At the same time), the American Red Cross came out with guidelines for swimming pools and specifically for lifeguarding, said Ward. See New Holland Pool pg 5

She added that CrossNet was flexible when mentors or mentees were struggling with ways of keeping in contact. “We have a lot of older mentors who were uncomfortable dropping things off or with (using) technology. We were accommodating of that, she said. According to Pankratz, the mentoring program fits well with the mission of CrossNet Ministries, which is to offer help and hope in the name of Jesus Christ. “At CrossNet, relationship is the foundation of all we do, she said. “The program creates a forum for relationships. That forum offers See CrossNet pg 7

HMS Plans Networking Breakfast Hinkletown Mennonite School (HMS), 272 Wanner Road, Ephrata, will hold its annual Business Networking Breakfast on Tuesday, July 28, from 6:45 to 9 a.m. in the school gymnasium. Preparations were in place in March to welcome more than 120 Lancaster County business leaders to HMS’ annual networking breakfast, but these plans were changed after the closures of schools and businesses due to COVID-19. The networking breakfast is a way for HMS to thank its community business partners. Now, as businesses and the community begin to reopen, HMS will offer an
opportunity for local business leaders to connect and feel supported in challenging times. The breakfast will include a presentation by Forbes Coaches Council speaker Ken Gosnell as well as networking opportunities with other Lancaster County businesses and leaders. Gosnell is the founder and chief servant officer of CEO Experience. He has helped hundreds of leaders in businesses and organizations have breakthrough experiences that connect biblical principles to business and help leaders make a greater impact in work and life. His presentation, “Well Done,” will focus on
facing challenges and engaging in fulfilling life, social imprint and community impact that are God-honoring, particularly during this time when economic challenges loom large. Breakfast is free to local leaders, thanks to presenting sponsors. Registration is required. To register and for more information, readers may visit www. hinkletownschool.org/events/Business -Networking. HMS is entering its 40th year of partnering with families in the areas of Ephrata and New Holland and beyond.
Historical Society Posts Update Hinkletown Mennonite School in Ephrata will hold its rescheduled business networking breakfast on Tuesday, July 28. The event is a way for the school to thank local businesses for their support.

part of the support group is to let participants know they are not alone. “Everyone goes through some form of treatment and side effects and it has impacted them or their family. Everyone’s journey is different, but there are some things everyone faces,” she explained. Cheryl noted that hosting the support group is a way to help others learn from her experiences. “After going through cancer three times, it’s time for me to give back. I can help people go through the dark days,” she said. “If they are finished treatment, they can still come. You still deal with side effects as you try to get your life back to the new normal.” The group will hold a Rock-A-Thon fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 9 a.m. to noon in the church’s fellowship hall. “People will sponsor us to rock in rocking chair for three hours. It won’t just be the group; it will be caregivers and the youth group from the church,” Cheryl noted. Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society and the costs associated with the cancer support group. For more information, readers may contact Cheryl at Cherylca@ptd.net or 610-762-0002.

It is not just about the treatment or prognosis,” she stated. “Having cancer affects the way you live, work and think. It can also affect our relationships.” After doing research, Cheryl saw a need to start a local cancer support group that was open to all. “We found that cancer support groups are (usually) specific to certain cancers, like breast cancer, prostate cancer or lung cancer, and they are (held) at the hospitals,” she stated. “When I approached my church about the need, pastor Bob Petersheim offered space and support to help the group get started.” Since getting approval from the church, Cheryl has posted signs about the group at local stores and on Facebook. “I sent out bulletin inserts to about 30 churches in the area,” she noted. Pool staff members have posted the guidelines that apply to those who visit the pool on signs near the front entrance. Those who have a temperature greater than 100.4, a sore throat, shortness of breath, a persistent cough, chills, headache, problems with taste or smell, muscle pain, or close contact with another with those symptoms or who is a known COVID-19 patient are asked not to enter. For those who do visit the pool, the main guidelines include wearing masks while in the building and maintaining a distance of 6 feet from others. Also, it is recommended that nonslip footwear be worn in the building. Visitors must also sign a waiver specifically related to the possibility of catching coronavirus. According to Ward, lifeguards are disinfecting the area around the pool and inside where the vending machines are located when they arrive each morning and up to four times throughout the day. “We have removed all the picnic tables because they were difficult to disinfect,” said Ward. The baby pool for children age 6 and under located adjacent to the main pool required additional instructions. “Because of the size of our baby pool, we have social distancing blocks around it,” said Ward. The blocks mark off six spots where parents may sit. Adults must accompany children at all times to assist with social distancing, and the lifeguards may assign time blocks for using the pool if necessary. Ward noted that there is a benefit to having a pool membership. Under current guidelines, once the pool reaches 45% capacity, only pool members are admitted until the limit is reached. Ward said the pool opened during a week when weather was especially warm. “The first week we were open, we were busy,” he said. He noted that on the busiest day, more than 400 people visited the pool area. “Typically, at 4 p.m., people who have been here most of the day leave to go home,” he said, pointing out that the pool never breached its capacity. Ward noted that pool staff members are careful to track the number of patrons. “The cashier has a counter (to track those) who leave,” he noted. “If it gets too busy up front, the lifeguard on first aid duty keeps track.” He added that sometimes the staff members ask people if they are leaving for the day or going to their car to get something. “If the whole family is walking out with their chairs, it’s obvious,” he said

CrossNet from pg 1 ongoing support for those who take part. “(Support) is important because we know that developing a relationship with someone you don’t know takes time,” explained Pankratz. “It can (also) be challenging if you’re coming from different cultures and backgrounds.” The support Pankratz provides includes free and extensive training for mentors before they are matched with mentees and ongoing training throughout the time each pair is developing a mentorship. Pankratz also offers support by providing opportunities for mentors and mentees to get together. Other activities she recommends include meeting for coffee or food, seeing a movie, taking a walk, or visiting a new place outside New Holland. Pankratz noted that those who consider volunteering often wonder if this program would be a good fit. “We are looking for people who are eager to get to know new people and learn about them,” she said. “We are looking for people to meet on a regular basis to talk and listen and come alongside (a mentee) to offer support without needing to change the mentee.” She noted that because the Gospel is foundational to CrossNet, volunteers should have a strong personal relationship with Jesus and be willing to let that guide them. Pankratz said that each new mentor-mentee relationship is evaluated at the one-year mark to decide whether the relationship is continuing to be beneficial or should be closed because it has met its need or is not working. Pankratz hopes to offer a training session for new mentors in the fall. She is specifically in need of mentors who meet certain qualifications. “I have three middle school boys who are each looking for a mentor,” she said, noting that she will need three adult males who are energetic and willing to participate in rigorous activities. “Just taking them to coffee will not work,” she noted. Pankratz is also looking for two adult women to serve as mentors to other adult women. Men and women who wish to participate in the community mentoring program may find more information at https://elancocross.org. Specific questions should be directed to Pankratz at 717-355-2454 or charis@elancocross.org.

COCONUT OIL COFFEE Coconut oil is a great source of fat. Consuming fat helps you stay satisfied longer and also gives you a boost of energy. Almost 50% of the fatty acid in coconut oil is lauric acid, which also enhances the immune system. So for those reasons alone, you should try adding coconut oil to your coffee! - 1 cup brewed coffee - 1 tsp. Golden Barrel Coconut Oil - 1/4 tsp. cocoa powder (optional) Brew coffee. Pour hot coffee in blender. Add coconut oil and cocoa powder. Blend for 20 seconds or so until emulsified and frothy. Pour into mug and enjoy immediately.

with a unique etching attached - have been hidden in a total of 15 local and state parks. The program gives children an opportunity to win prizes at the completion of the program. A program guide called “Story Book” is available free at the Ephrata and Adamstown libraries. It contains the clues a family needs to locate each story page. A separate etching sheet is used to collect a picture of each story page, by making a rubbing with a crayon or pencil at the hidden post. This year, all posts have a unique four-digit code that participants enter through their library accounts to receive credit for the hike. The etching sheets will not be collected this year, so participants must enter each code to receive credit. They are also encouraged to adhere to the guidelines for safe health, including social distancing, wearing of masks, washing and sanitizing hands frequently, and being physically active. Participants are also encouraged to share photos of their hunts and offer tips via the program’s Facebook page. The program will run through Sunday, Aug. 30. Participants who locate all 15 posts will end up walking more than 11 miles. Children who log at least three completed etchings will receive a prize. Additional grand prizes will be awarded, based on the number of etched rubbings completed or digital codes recorded. The GO! program was introduced in York in 2008 as a brainchild of the Healthy York County Coalition’s Healthy Lifestyles Task Force. The task force was looking for a way to battle childhood obesity in Pennsylvania, and letterboxing was chosen as a way to get children moving. Last year, over 500 children returned etching sheets for the Lancaster County program, during which they walked more than 3,300 miles. The program is funded through WellSpan’s Community Partnership Grant Program. These grants are awarded to nonprofit organizations that improve the health of the communities and people WellSpan serves. For more information about the GO Lancaster! program, readers may visit www.golancaster.org. More information on how WellSpan promotes healthy communities may be found at www.WellSpan.org/Neighbors.
