On a corner in Akron, where Main Street and Route 272 intersect, a small building is home to Bible Visuals International (BVI). The organization, which was founded nearly 60 years ago by area resident Helen Odenwelder, meets needs around the world for visual teaching materials about God. Tom Luttmann, executive director of BVI, explained that the organization has endeavored to bring the Bible to children and adults in three ways. “We have visualized Bible lessons, which we are updating with a colorization process; visualized biographies of missionaries and other Christians from different See Bible Lessons pg 2
A Support System For Families Cavod Campers To Stage “The Lion King Jr.” By Ann Mead Ash
There is a saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Maryanne O’Neill and Emmie Romberger, who are both staff members with Safe Families for Children, a program of Bethany Christian Services (BCS), believe this expression to be true. Safe Families is a ministry that helps parents experiencing a crisis by providing a Christian host family to care for their children until they can be reunited. “We are the preventative service, which saves funds,” explained Romberger, who added that the central Pennsylvania chapter has a 97 percent return-to-family rate. According to O’Neill, the program is much less costly
Nearly 50 Cavod Musical Theatre Camp students ages 10 to 17 will make up the cast of “The Lion King Jr.,” which will be staged at Cavod Theatre at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, and Sunday, July 29. Members of the public are invited to purchase tickets and bring their families to the shows.

Baby “Clark” was born while his mother was incarcerated. Bethany Christian Services’ Safe Families for Children program was able to provide Clark with a host home until his mother was released to care for him. The program is one of many that will be supported by the organization’s annual golf tournament on Sept. 26.

Bible Lessons from pg 1 eras; and visualized songs for children to sing and (take part in) worship together,” said Luttmann. BVI held its 59th anniversary banquet, with a gathering of nearly 300 attendees, on May 10. Tim Keesee, executive director with Frontline Missions International, served as keynote speaker. Frontline is an organization known for taking the Gospel into difficult regions of the world. The choice of Keesee as speaker was appropriate, as BVI began when Odenwelder was directing Child Evangelism Fellowship outreaches and searching for a publishing ministry to supply the needs of local clubs. “(BVI) started supplying local needs for Bible clubs that were hosted in people’s backyards,” explained Luttmann. “It’s a ministry that grew in scope with Helen’s vision to supply materials not just locally but internationally.” Updating materials that were created some years ago has been an important goal for BVI. Luttmann explained how help in accomplishing that feat is being provided by Sam Gunti, who runs large
Bible camps - reaching as many as 18,000 children in a camp - in India. BVI had worked with Gunti to translate and print materials for his gatherings, and Gunti decided to return the favor. During a visit to BVI a few years ago, Gunti brought a thumb drive of updated BVI materials in full color. “It would have cost us quite a bit (to update those materials, so Gunti’s gift) has provided a good foundation,” Luttmann noted. Locally, BVI has worked with Bible2School, a Manheim-based mentorship program that offers free, weekly Bible elective classes for public school students in several Lancaster County school districts. “(Bible2School) is growing, and they needed more visuals to go with their curriculum,” said Luttmann. “It would be an expensive process (for Bible2School) to have new illustrations put together, (so) we looked through our curriculum and found visuals that would match their lessons.” Luttmann said BVI is in the process of transforming offerings to give more options to those who need them. “We
have great resources, but they don’t have to be in just (one) format,” Luttmann said. “There’s a new generation of children and ministry workers who know more about technology, and they are looking for resources they can download or put on a tablet.” BVI is working to make resources available digitally and as downloads, Thousands gather at a Bible study held in India by Sam Gunti, a partner of Bible and Luttmann is excited to Visuals International (BVI), which is see where the materials are being utilized. “There are located in Akron. The board of the Community Memorial Park Association has announced the completion of the project to replace the deteriorated Rotary and Hart pavilions and the former pool bathhouse restrooms. The special projects capital campaign, which began last spring, exceeded its goal of raising $55,000 toward the project. The board also added funding from its reserves so more enhancements could be added to the original rebuilding plans. The total project cost was approximately $150,000. Along with improvements to the condition of the pavilions and restrooms, additional security cameras have been added to the park to reduce vandalism and increase entrance safety. According to park board president Shaun Seymour, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows service organization and New Holland Toyota led the capital campaign. The borough’s streets, parks, and maintenance employees and community organizations, businesses, and individuals also contributed to the project.

proclaimed Huyard. “It’s huge.” Working with nearly 50 Cavod Musical Theatre Camp students ages 10 to 17, Huyard will strive to present a play based on what he called “one of the most popular Disney movies of all time.” “The Lion King Jr.” will be presented at Cavod Theatre, 665 W. Main St., New Holland, at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, and Sunday, July 29. Amy Rau will serve as musical director, and Stephanie Morales will choreograph the show. Camp is directed by Meredith Bulgrien. According to Huyard, other challenges of staging the show are related to the authenticity of the movements and music. Because the costumes are inspired by the animals represented in the characters, the movements will also be inspired by those animals. Huyard noted that the costuming is in keeping with the music and movement. “The costumes are inspired by the animals, but they are still very human,” explained Huyard.
“The lions wear traditional African clothing with a head piece that is a lion’s head worn as a headdress. We see their faces.” Huyard added that all the movements will be choreographed, noting that there will be a complexity to each scene, in addition to African dances, which Morales is specially trained to teach. “There’s a nod to the beautiful tribal dancing (done in Africa),” said Huyard. Likewise, Rau is also working with campers to learn words in the several dialects represented in the show, including Swahili. “The singers are doing harmonies in Swahili (throughout) the show,” she explained. In early June, when all the campers had registered, Huyard held an audition followed by a meet-and-greet and a readthrough of the script. “(The campers) have all their material and are working on memorization,” shared Huyard. Campers were expected to have their lines memorized by the first day of

camp so that blocking and choreography could be learned by the end of the first week. “The second half of the second week, we will be having tech week with costumes and props,” said Huyard, who added that he has faith in the talented cast, many of whom have appeared in local theater productions. Lead roles will include Lincoln Everett as Young Simba and Gavin Haas in the role of the grown lion. Riley Fidler will play Young Nala, and Audrey Pavlica will fill the role of her older counterpart. Mufasa will be played by Ian Marcelo, and Mackenzie Neff will fill the role of Rafiki. Derrick Lambert will play Scar. Jada Corell will play the part of the meerkat Timon, and Josiah Henne will give life to the warthog Pumbaa in a full-size puppet costume. Zazu will be played by Darla Rublesky as puppeteer. Bulgrien pointed out that the camp setting, which has drawn students from three counties, is different from other Cavod productions. “We are together 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day,” said Bulgrien, who added that when the students are not involved in rehearsal she works with them on acting exercises. “We start every day with a devotional,” she noted. “Camp is my favorite thing to do at Cavod because you really get to know the students.” Noting that the show is familiar to several generations now, Huyard said that he hopes area residents will bring their children and grandchildren to a performance. “It’s such a fun show,” he said. “Everyone loves this show.” Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under and free for children age 4 and under, may be purchased in advance at www.CavodAcad emy.com or by calling 717-3514040. A discount price is offered for tickets purchased up to two hours prior to a performance.

The central Pennsylvania region includes York and Lebanon counties, offering about 55 host families within the chapter. “ We have really seen the program grow in terms of volunteers and those utilizing the service,” said Romberger. “We will work with any parent who is in crisis.” According to Romberger, advantages to families who benefit from the service are many. “The parent gains an additional support network in the host family, and they can handle the crisis without their children being involved,” said Romberger. “(This can) ultimately stabilize the family.” In addition, parents retain full custody of their children, who stay with screened and trained host families. mother continued to have a relationship with her, helping to ease the new mother through issues that can be overwhelming, such as sleeping schedules. “It was a good transition,” said O’Neill, who noted that the birth mother called the host mother the first time the baby was ill. “When (the birth mother was) reunited (with the baby, the host mother gave her) a picture book of all the things they had done together,” O’Neill added. Referrals come from a number of sources, and many clients call Safe Families themselves. “We call people back within 24 hours,” noted Romberger. O’Neill noted that the organization is actively seeking to network with area churches for a variety of reasons. “We are looking to engage with new churches,” she noted. “That’s where we get our partners from.” Readers who would like to learn more about Safe Families may visit www.safe-families.org or call 717-238-3549.

A number of different types of issues may bring a client to Safe Families. “It’s a different situation every time,” said Romberger. “It could be homelessness, hospitalization, or incarceration, but the underlying issue is a lack of a support network.” Romberger added that for a single mother, the birth of a second child is often a time when help is needed, and O’Neill added that when a mother is undergoing treatment for an illness, such as cancer, Safe Families can often help. O’Neill and Romberger described a situation where a client was incarcerated when she gave birth. “The hospital social worker called us, and we started hosting the baby right out of the hospital when he was (only) four days old,” said Romberger, explaining that the host mother took the baby to wellness checkups and brought him to see his birth mother whenever visitation was possible. After the birth mother was released, the host

Grassland FFA members attended the annual Pennsylvania FFA State Convention at the Pennsylvania State University from June 12 to 14. The convention was composed of competitions, sessions, and social activities, including eating ice cream from the creamery. FFA chapters from across Pennsylvania were represented. Three general sessions were held at the Bryce Jordan Center. The sessions featured Pennsylvania FFA sponsors and supporters, motivational speakers, recognition of FFA members’ accomplishments, and lessons on leadership. Unique this year, Pennsylvania FFA
honored past state officers, including Grassland FFA’s Kenneth Martin. Incorporating Pennsylvania FFA’s 2018-19 theme, “Ignite, Create, and Illuminate,” the newly retired 2017-18 state officer team members reflected on how FFA members may ignite, create, and illuminate in their schools, chapters, and communities. Grassland FFA members competed in a variety of Career and Leadership Development Events (LDE/CDE) that tested their knowledge and skills within specific areas in agriculture. Daniel Horning placed first in the state in Junior Prepared Public Speaking. In Agriculture Sales, the
and chapter officer Hadassah Hoover took second place in the Teach Ag! Essay Contest. Hoover created, taught, and reflected on an agriculture lesson of choice in the Environmental Science class. Grassland FFA’s chapter scrapbook placed third in the state. Many FFA members helped design and create the collection of memories. Recent Grassland FFA alumnus William Horning represented the Grassland FFA by running for a state officer position. The team totals are added up based on a combined score of two days of shooting at 20 targets each day. Eight members are required per team, and the top five scores are added to get a team total. Bob reflected on the team’s showing, noting, “I was hoping for a top-10 finish, but since this was our first time with a high schoolage team, I didn’t know what to expect.” Bob added that he was

As they advance, I (will) try to show them some of the little things that may give them an edge technique-wise and mentally.” RAC S3DA is open to anyone in grades three through 12 who wants to give archery a try. Practices are held at the RAC, off Route 625 on Church Road, Mohnton, on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Readers who would like more information about the local club may search for “Reading Archery Club S3DA” on Facebook. Youndt earned an even 400 on his 40 targets, which put him in ninth place overall. Erin Hostetter, who competed in the elementary division, shot 183-181 for a total of 364 and 26th place in fixed pins. Davis Oppenheim and Zander Clymer were RAC’s youngest competitors in Elementary Fixed Pins. Oppenheim shot a total of 356, and Clymer garnered 259 points. Two Garden Spot eighth-grade students competed in the Middle School Fixed Pins category. Greg Weidman shot a 370, and Bryce Clymer shot a 355. Reece noted that as coaches,
