City Gate is an answer to prayer

“We don’t pursue places to go,” said Kim Zimmerman, who founded City Gate in 2007 with her husband, Brian. “We told God wherever He provides the building we will go.” That modus operandi first led the Zimmermans to rent a basement in a former Lancaster hotel where they began meeting with the homeless community each Friday night. Following God’s lead, City Gate has since opened additional locations in Lititz, Columbia, and Ephrata. Opening the New Holland location happened quickly, according to Kim. After the owner of 117 E. Main St., New Holland, contacted her on a Tuesday in late February, Zimmeran reached out via Facebook asking if anybody would be interested in partnering with the organization.

“By Friday, we had a team,” Kim recalled. “We had financing committed, and we signed a lease that weekend.” By March, the

ministry was paying rent on the property, and by April 1, City Gate - New Holland had opened. As the New Holland location was preparing to open, Kim heard from leaders in local churches and ministries who said they had been praying for a City Gate to come to the area.

that will probably be pizza. “Come down. Have a slice of pizza and listen to a song,” she invited. “If you need prayer, we’ll do that.” Weaver added that services may include a short devotional. “It feels like equal parts worship, prayer, and community,” she said, adding, “People are hungry for community.”

Weaver had visited the Ephrata City Gate in the past, and when she heard a New Holland location would open, she dove in. “This is an opportunity in my backyard with my neighbors,” she said. “We (already) minister to a lot of people who live close by.”

Originally, the Zimmermans focused on prayer and service for the Lancaster City Gate location, and Janelle Weaver, who will provide leadership at the New Holland outreach, plans to do the same. She is starting with a Thursday evening praise and worship event called Fill My Cup Café, which will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. “There’s a light meal with it,” said Weaver, who noted that for the summer,

The organization is looking to work with local individuals, businesses, churches, and ministries. “We don’t try to reinvent (what another group in the community is already doing),” Kim explained. “We do what we are called to do, and we partner.” So far, City Gate is building relationships with CrossNet Ministries and working with a church that only rents space for Sunday services and is looking for a place to meet during

Playing and learning in the park

The first Community Action Partnership (CAP) of Lancaster’s first Thrive to Five Home Visiting Park Play Date began at 9 a.m. on June 30 in the Reamstown Memorial Park, and by 9:10 a.m., bubbles filled the air as nearly 10 children and their caregivers were engaged in educational play. “It’s for the whole family,” said Ocean Smith, family engagement specialist with CAP and CrossNet Ministries in New Holland. “The little and the

big (children) are learning, and the adults are too.” In addition to the Reamstown session, a playdate was held at Long’s Park Kids Place on July 7, and two upcoming dates are scheduled for Friday, July 28, and Friday, Aug. 18, at Daniel’s Den Playground, 530 Central Manor Road, Lancaster. Registration to attend a Park Play Date is encouraged. Parents may register at https:// bit.ly/TTFHVPPlaydates23.

“The Park Play series is a continued learning connection for the families over the summer,” said Smith, who See Thrive to Five pg 4

“STEAM to Go” kits for a range of ages emphasize the importance of hands-on learning.

Five kits for children and three for adults are now available. The kits for adults were developed in partnership with Dementia Friendly Lancaster. “We were looking for items to support that group,” said Anna D’Agostino, director of the ELANCO Library.

CREEKSIDE FOODS

“These are designed to offer activities and books to help keep the mind sharp,” she said, pointing out that a variety of learning challenges are included. “There are conversation prompts to spark positive reminiscences and conversation between older and younger family members,” she added. Adult-oriented kits include a Homemaker Kit including fashions from the ’50s, sewing games, and other activities to spur hand-eye coordination and exercise

motor skills. A Handyman Kit features Sears House Designs from the 1930s, and a Things That Fly kit focuses on birds and butterflies.

Kits for children have proven to be popular, according to the library staff members. A Learn to Measure Kit includes measuring cups, a tape measure, and weights to introduce concepts of length, volume, and fractional relationships. A Marvel Phonics Kit offers ways to practice writing and vowel sounds. A similar kit takes

its theme from the popular Berenstain Bears and focuses on sight words and wipe-off phonics workbooks. A Sound, Music, and Band Kit is available to introduce the joys of music and encourage language development. A Police and Firefighter Play Kit was divided into two kits to make it available to more children.

D’Agostino noted that the effort to add kits to the library’s offerings began in 2022 and that the increase in the number of kits was partially inspired by the large number of area homeschoolers who utilize the library. “We are hoping to add more,” said D’Agostino, who noted that staff members hope to assemble a chemistry kit soon.

More information about the library is available at www.elancolibrary.org.

noted that one important benefit of the program is giving children and parents a chance to connect and socialize. “The biggest thing is building a resource group with informal connections and play,” she said.

“So much learning is done through play,” Smith pointed out, noting that the games she brings to the park are designed to keep children engaged. “There are so many simple things you can do and ways to interact that encour-

age learning,” she noted, adding that the playground itself offers gross motor practice. “We have some books we hope to do a story time, (followed by) a couple of songs,” she said. Open-ended games incorporate sensory objects and include hand-eye coordination activities, such as a fishing game. “We have (games to encourage learning) colors, numbers, math, and fine motor skills,” she said, pointing out a tic-tac-toe game, sidewalk chalk, and a

Ocean

bean bag toss. “These help to work skills over the summer,” she said.

About five team members aided Smith in the park and one of those was Jessica Zook, youth services coordinator with the Adamstown Area Library. “The libraries ... are a continued connection

through the collaboration of the First 10 Partnership,” explained Smith. “We often collaborate for play and learns and sometimes in these smaller learning and connection opportunities like the playdates.” Zook was at the Reamstown Park to read a book to the children and help involve

families in the summer reading program. During the session, Zook also interacted with the children by helping them hunt for plastic waffles and fish, among other activities. “There’s a fish escaping,” she pointed out to a child.

Last year, Smith only served ELANCO School District as part of the Parents as Teachers program, but that changed for 2023 when the Parents as Teachers Home Visitors and the Head Start Home Visitors programs

merged together on CAP’s Thrive to Five team. “Now (I work) under the Thrive to Five education umbrella,” Smith explained, noting that she is doing home visiting in a wider area of the county. Smith noted that the Thrive to Five education team is producing a newsletter about events throughout the county, which parents may receive by registering at https://bit.ly/TTFEvent NewsletterReg. Readers who have questions may email osmith@caplanc.org.

Volleyball players win scholarships

Two local students were honored with a scholarship from the Middle Atlantic AAU. Scholarship awards were based on achievements in both academics and athletics as well as community service involvement. The honorees are Tanner Laukhuff and Seth Graybill.

Laukhuff just graduated from Garden Spot High School, where he was captain of the volleyball team. He had a 4.17 GPA and was named an AAU All-American player when his Prevail Volleyball Club team won AAU Nationals in the summer of 2022. He plans to attend Stevenson University in the fall and will play both beach and indoor volleyball at the collegiate level.

Graybill is a recent graduate of Warwick High School, where he was captain of the varsity volleyball team. He is also on the Prevail Volleyball Club team that won AAU Nationals last summer. Graybill will playing volleyball at Messiah University.
