Lessons From “Into The Woods Jr.” Cavod Campers To Stage Fairy Tale Mash-Up BY ANN MEAD ASH

ccording to Stephanie Morales, who is making her theatrical directorial debut with Cavod’s “Into the Woods Jr.,” the woods are a metaphor for life. “We have an idea of what life should look like, but let’s look at 2020,” said Morales, pointing out the timeliness of the message. “Life was supposed to look one way, but how do you roll with those punches?” “Into the Woods Jr.” is, in Morales’ words, “a modified, condensed, and wholesome version of the show,” which has been called a modern mash-up of classic fairy tales. The show brings together main characters from “Cinderella,” “Jack and the Beanstalk,” “Little Red Riding Hood” and “Rapunzel,” and along with a witch, and a few pieces of other beloved tales, in a story about a baker and his wife and their wish to start a family. Nearly 30 performers ages 8 to 18 will take part in the show. Cast

Aaron’s Acres campers enjoy the Manheim Community pool each weekday morning during the six weeks camp is held.

“It’s so good to be back (at camp) in person,” said Aaron’s Acres executive director Risa Paskoff. During 2020, Aaron’s Acres held virtual camp for 50 campers, but this year, six weeks of weekday summer camp are being held at the Manheim Community Pool and Memorial Park, along with a two-week virtual camp. The camp has programs for children, adolescents, and adults ages 5 to 21 with developmental disabilities.

Debbie Saylor, curator for the Blue Rock Heritage Center, believes that she and Blue Rock president Charlie Douts bring together the expertise needed to preserve Washington Boro area history. “My specialty is Native American (cultures), but Charlie knows local history, so it’s a good partnership,” she said. The Heritage Center, located at 2251 River Road, Washington Boro, is open for special occasions, including Sundays, Aug. 22, Sept. 19, and Oct. 17, from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. More information about upcoming activities may be found at www.bluerockheritage.org. According to Douts, the organization was founded after the location was purchased by the Lancaster Area Sewer Authority in 2002. “A group felt we had lost so much history,” said Douts, who added that the borough was the smallest in Lancaster County prior to

becoming part of Manor Township in 1971. The group recognized the unique Native American history of the area and brought in Saylor from Baltimore to bring new life to the historical displays at the center. Saylor, who is curator of the Indian Steps Museum in Airville and vice president of the Lower Susquehanna Archaeology Society Chapter 28, said she saw a real potential gem in the Blue Rock Heritage Center. “Washington Boro is very rich in archaeological history,” she noted. The current exhibit at Blue Rock Heritage Center, “Footprints Through Time,” takes visitors from the Paleo-Indian Period to the present. “ When you walk in, you understand the timeline, which is Paleo-Indian the first 16,000 years,” she said, explaining that the earliest culture in the area is traced to nomadic people, followed by Shenk’s Ferry people. Among the artifacts on display are stone tools, spear tips, and pottery. Saylor has also creat-

In addition, the collection includes butcher blocks, duck decoys, and information about ice harvesting, a crucial business prior to refrigeration. The organization is associated with the Circle Legacy Center, a Native American heritage group with an emphasis on the arts, crafts,

and culture of indigenous people, and with Raven Ridge Wildlife Center, which holds regular classes on animals such as bats, owls, and vultures. Saylor noted that part of her job is to identify and catalog area archaeological finds. “Once an item leaves the area, its cultural value is lost,” she explained. “That’s why the heritage center exists: so we can show people … what a wonderful heritage this whole place has.”

control the hand from his stump. Matt said Iron-Leg will need to raise $10,000 to help make that purchase. To raise those funds, IronLeg is planning a benefit golf tournament for Saturday, Sept. 11. Matt acknowledged that the event is being held on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and noted that three of the organizers are veterans. He said that a large flag will be part of the event. The tournament will be held at The Highlands of Donegal, 650 Pinkerton Road, Mount Joy, and will include a silent auction and dinner. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m., and there will be a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Organizers have invited Shawn to be present at the tournament. More information about the tournament may be found at

www.ironleg.org or by emailing info@ironleg.org. According to Matt, the organization started with a charity boxing match hosted by Bucket List Boxers in September of 2020. After some consideration, organizers decided to donate the funds to Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development. Parker had gone to Schreiber for physical therapy to learn to use his prosthesis. “ We were happy to raise money for them,” said Matt of the center. Currently, Iron-Leg has an eight-member board that meets regularly. Matt hopes to see the board expand in the future, and he has learned of an organization that works to recycle prosthetics that IronLeg might be able to partner with. “As we grow, we will try to network,” he said.

Parker’s fifth and current prosthesis sports camo on the material that fits around his stump. Matt said Parker enjoys climbing rock walls as well as playing on the neighbor’s trampoline. “He uses his arms all the time,” said Matt. “He’s very muscular.” “I climbed a giant rope,” Parker said of a recent activity. Parker is the poster child for Iron-Leg Corp, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has a goal of helping raise funds to help children obtain needed prosthetics and receive therapy to learn to use them. “We want to get the more advanced prosthetics (for children),” explained Matt, who told the story of a youngster named Shawn, who lives in York and is currently being helped by the organization. Matt learned about Shawn when he read an article about him online and was able to contact Shawn’s mother. “(In the) article … his mom was saying insurance wouldn’t cover a better hand,” said Matt, who noted that Shawn was using a strap to hold a bow so he could practice playing the violin. “When I called her, she said he got (a moderately more advanced) hand when she raised money through (crowdsourcing).” Matt explained that insurance will generally cover only the most basic prosthetics for children because they grow so fast. He added that limbs can cost as much as $85,000. The mechanical hand that IronLeg hopes to purchase for Shawn will have advanced technology, allowing him to

Art Workshops Available For Children

In the spring of 2020, when parents reported that children were having a hard time adjusting to school being closed, Paskoff and program director Elaine Burnett worked to create meaningful virtual and touch-point experiences for campers. “We had 50 kids on the screen (at virtual camp),” reported Paskoff, who encouraged staff and visitors to wear their Aaron’s Acres yellow T-shirts because she knew the color would comfort campers. “While the activities were going on, staff members would call a name and say, ‘Pick that up to show it. It’s beautiful.’” Virtual activities included cooking, scavenger hunts, bingo, and singing. “It was better than we ever thought,” said Paskoff. Touch-point activities included surprise fall and spring visits to campers’ homes. Dressed in their Aaron’s Acres blue and yellow gear, the five members of the administrative team used the organization’s van to bring each child a special gift. Parents also received hot chocolate in the fall and the makings of ice cream sundaes in the spring. Burnett called ahead, asking parents to send the child to the door when the bell rang. “We wanted it to be a surprise,” said Paskoff. “(Each camper was) so excited that Aaron’s Acres was at their house.” More information about Aaron’s Acres may be found at www.aaronsacres.org.

LCCTF Workforce Grants are designed with the workforce-bound student in mind. They are presented to high school and adult LCCTC students who are entering the workforce to assist them in obtaining the tools, equipment, uniforms, or other items needed for employment. This year’s Workforce Grant winners are Natalie Snyder, Electro Mechanical Engineering, Conestoga Valley; Dylan Kelley, Culinary Arts, Manheim Central; Amner Choc Rax, Culinary Arts, Elizabethtown; Amberly Trusty, Culinary Arts, Warwick; Dakota Oppenheim, Welding, Solanco; Owen Wagner, Welding, Manheim Central; Leo Copeland, Carpentry, Warwick; Ryan Martin, Welding, Warwick; Lillian Keith, Welding, Ephrata; Faith Kunkle, Painting & Interior Finishes, Warwick; Mackenzie Peterman, Photog-

Camp began June 21, and two-week sessions will be held through Friday, Aug. 6, with the exception of the week that began on July 5 because of the holiday. Paskoff explained that when the organization asked the state for approval to run the camp, COVID-19 restrictions were more stringent, including wearing masks and COVID-19 testing for those who had not been vaccinated. “They are lighter now,” said Paskoff on the second day of camp. She added that the number of campers was limited by restrictions as well. “We would normally have 80 campers at each session, but we had to cut back, so we only have 30,” she said. Calling the in-person camps “basic,” Paskoff explained that sessions are held each weekday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In the morning, campers use the pool in Manheim or take part in therapeutic horseback riding at Greystone Stables in Leola. In addition to swimming, activities include group games, crafts, snacks, and music therapy. Special events will include visits from Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, a petting zoo, an entertainer, and more. “(These are) all activities we can have here (at Manheim),” said Paskoff, who noted that the 1-to-2 child-to-staff ratio is still in effect, and a nurse is on site. “Every child who wants to come can come, and we can meet that child’s needs,” Paskoff stated.

County Treasures: Heritage Press Museum BY ANN MEAD ASH

R068520

The Heritage Press Museum, 346 N. Queen St., Lancaster, has its roots in the Lancaster Cultural History Museum, once located in the Lancaster Trust Performing Arts Center. Ken Kulakowsky is one of the volunteers at the Heritage Press and a member of the .918 Club, a group dedicated to preserving the art of printing and named for the height of a piece of type. Volunteers from the club man the museum when it is open Thursdays through Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m., Sundays from noon to 3 p.m., and the first and third Fridays of each month from 5 to 9 p.m. More information about the museum may be found at www.918club.org. According to Kulakowsky, in 2004, the cultural museum received a donation of printing equipment, and the organization sought volunteers

The eighth annual Lancaster Printers Fair, which will be held on the 300 block of North Queen Street, Lancaster on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 17 and 18, will benefit the center. A Wayzgoose and Surplus Letterpress Sale will take place at 117 Parkside Ave., Lancaster on Sept. 17 from 5 to 9 p.m. Kulakowsky explained that a wayzgoose is an event that traditionally involved printing competitions and eating roasted goose. Lancaster holds a littleknown place in American history because of its printing prowess, noted Kulakowsky. “The Articles of Confederation were written and agreed upon in York, but York didn’t have any big printers, so (the Articles were) printed on King Street (in Lancaster),” he explained. who had experience with letter presses. An exhibit was set up and ran from April until the end of 2004. In early 2005, more equipment was donated, and the exhibit opened again in April, with the display running until 2009, when a state budget cut forced the museum to close. The printing equipment was not technically part of the museum collection, so the printers sought a new home, eventually landing at Building Character, 342 N. Queen St., Lancaster, where the members print bags for the many crafters who sell items there. Kulakowsky said the volunteers are happy to demonstrate the presses and even allow visitors to print items such as coasters. “We have no canned presentation,” he explained. “We will spend five minutes to five hours (with visitors).” The museum asks that groups set up an appointment to visit. Among the presses on display is a 1750 common press. “This press was in the Smithsonian for a while,” said Kulakowsky, who added that when the press was found in the basement of a church in Maryland, someone who knew of the club contacted club representatives. A Ben Franklin-era press is on display, and Kulakowsky noted that those studying the American Revolution or the

became popular for people of German ancestry to translate names (to English),” he said. As an example, McCrea noted that the name Zimmerman was often translated to Carpenter. He also pointed out that many family members have similar names because of the tradition of naming the first son after his father’s father. “The second son is often named for his mother’s father,” said McCrea, who stated that within a few generations as many as 50 cousins might share the same name. “That really does make genealogy (research) difficult, especially early on,” he said. McCrea said that researching family members who came to America by ship is easier if the ancestor arrived after 1820, when the federal government began keeping lists of passengers for immigration purposes. “You might get an age, occupation, and a country,” shared McCrea, who said that lists created in the 1900s might include the name of the person the passenger was coming to visit and maybe a birth date. McCrea’s interest in his own ancestry led him to work with the Adamstown Area Genealogy Group, which currently meets virtually on the second Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. McCrea said the group has been meeting for about five years to discuss related topics or research an attendee’s family tree. To learn more about the group, please visit www .adamstownarealibrary.org and click on events. During that visit, McCrea found his mother’s collection of old family photographs. “I thought it would be neat to arrange them into a family tree,” said McCrea, who noted that the idea was the beginning of a lifelong obsession with genealogy. McCrea said that the internet has been a boon to searching for one’s ancestry, but he warned would-be researchers to beware of errors. “You have to go back to the original sources and reconfirm,” he stated. “Don’t just accept something as fact.” The number of Germans arriving in Pennsylvania began to increase around 1715, according to McCrea. “By 1727, leaders in Philadelphia noticed (the increase) and started tracking them,” said McCrea, who noted northern parts of Lancaster County may be up to 90% German and Swiss. Because German lineage is common in the area, McCrea offered tips specific to searching that history. “About the 1820s, it

Consider Becoming a Tutor

Although educational goals, skill building and job attainment are always on the forefront for adult learners entering our program, skilling up after the pandemic takes on a whole new meaning and will be an important step for many workers who lost their jobs during COVID-19 restrictions. For some, it will mean improving basic literacy in reading, math, or English. For others, it will mean career exploration and sharpening skills to move into postsecondary education or training. The Success Centers in Lancaster and Lebanon counties are places where adults can get the support they need to build skills so that they can transform their lives, sustain their families and strengthen their communities.* What skills and knowledge do you have to share with an adult student to help them reach their goals? To find out more and to explore the possibilities, please contact: Lancaster County Jane Myers jane@literacysuccess.org 717-295-5523

Lebanon County Amanda Ruth 717-274-2554 (extension 128) amanda@literacysuccess.org

*As the safety and health of everyone is a priority to us, we will continue to offer options for both face-to-face and remote learning to adapt to individual levels of comfort in providing instruction.
