Church Plans Centennial Celebration A Summer
Experience With Purpose
By Ann Mead Ash
As early as 1742, Jesuit missionaries had visited the borough of New Holland to celebrate Mass. By 1916, Redemptorist missionaries working out of Ephrata purchased a buggy in New Holland to be used for parish visitations. On July 27, 1919, Father William White celebrated High Mass as pastor of St. Rita’s Chapel, which was located in the Showalter Building, 209 E. Main St., New Holland, now the home of a clock shop and an ice cream restaurant. St. Rita’s congregation eventually founded Our Lady of Lourdes. On Saturday, July 27, at 5 p.m., members of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 150 Water St., New Holland, will celebrate a Mass in honor of the church’s 100th anniversary. Bishop Ronald Gainer and previous church pastors will officiate, and a special commemorative program will be presented. A celebratory meal will follow in the Parish Hall. In addition, a timeline including pictures, articles, and memorabilia will be on display, and a multimedia presentation will give attendees an overview of church history. Current and former parishioners are invited to attend this special event. Additional activities that are planned to celebrate the anniversary will include a Parish Centennial Picnic in September. For October, church members plan to create a See Centennial Celebration pg 5

The centennial committee of Our Lady of Lourdes Church has planned a number of activities to celebrate the church’s 100th anniversary. Among these is a special Mass to be said by Bishop Ronald Gainer (not pictured) at 5 p.m. on July 27. The Mass will be followed by a celebratory meal.
Jennifer Eaton, manager of youth services with VisionCorps of Lancaster, laid out the rules early for the campers who took part in Camp Cool from June 17 to 21. The campers, each of whom has a vision impairment, were told that they were not allowed to come to Eaton and say, “I can’t (do something).” “They could say, ‘I need help’ or ‘I’m scared to do this,’” said Eaton. The idea behind the banned phrase was to encourage the 8- to 12-year-old students from Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties to creatively utilize the expanded core curriculum that camp leaders had set out for the week. “(The curriculum is) a set of tools that children with vision loss need to have in order See Camp Cool pg 8

Adam Nagle is still settling into his new office in the Together Community Center (TCC), where he was recently named executive director of The Factory Ministries. While the walls in the office may still be bare, Nagle has assessed the situation and is eagerly working to move forward in his new role. “This is a special place with a really bright future,” said Nagle. “There’s energy and optimism, and I am excited about the pieces I can contribute.” Nagle, who was raised in Lititz, has training and experience in a number of areas that qualify him to lead the ministry. “A Night of Gospel Music,” featuring the group Heaven 4 Shore, will be held on the ballfield at Woodcrest Retreat Center, 225 Woodcrest Road, Ephrata, on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 7 p.m. Funds raised by the event will help lower camping costs for children who take part in Woodcrest’s summer programs. According to Cliff Martin, executive director at Woodcrest Retreat, Heaven 4 Shore will be appearing at Woodcrest
for the first time. “(Heaven 4 Shore plays) good four-part harmony gospel quartet music, (which is) always appreciated,” noted Martin. “They have the desire to share the message of (the) Gospel in song.” The group, which began making music in 1993, has traveled many miles over the years singing the Southern gospel songs they love. The group formed with a passion to share how God’s love and forgiveness are given freely when the gift of Christ is accepted. Heaven 4 Shore members have long held to a commitment to doing the best possible job every time they sing and trusting the Lord to do

make it bigger than just ourselves.” Volunteers from Lifecycles lead weekly rides for teenage boys in Landisville, Marietta, and New Holland and for girls in Lititz. A free meal is served, and bicycles, helmets, and shirts are supplied for all participants. Plus, Lifecycles organizes annual summer challenge rides for participants. Lifecycles leaders are planning to embark on a cross-country bicycle tour with a group of boys next summer. Steinweg and Collins are hoping that their own journey will inspire those riders as they train and prepare. “We want to show them that anyone can do it,” said Collins. Training for Steinweg and Collins has mostly consisted of lots of bicycle rides. Meals will generally be purchased from gas station convenience stores, with the occasional sit-down meal to refuel. Generators that attach to and are powered by bicycle wheels will enable Steinweg and Collins to keep their phones charged. The pair plans to utilize an app called Warm Showers that connects bicycle tourists worldwide with hosts that offer free hospitality - whether a place to wash up, get a beverage, or spend the night. “A lot of churches will open up their doors too, letting cyclists utilize their youth centers or
other spaces like a hostel,” Collins noted. The cross-country ride is not the first incredible physical feat for either Steinweg or Collins, who first met while competing in the annual Lititz recCenter adult triathlon. Collins got hooked on triathlons in high school and recently accomplished an Ironman. Steinweg began doing triathlons during college and completed the Boston Marathon in 2018. The two are planning a May 2020 wedding. To donate toward the couple’s campaign for Lifecycles, readers may visit www.gofundme.com/coast-to-coast -campaign-for-lifecycles. More information about Lifecycles may be found at www.lifecyclesteam.org. Pictured on front: Beginning on Aug. 6, Erin Steinweg (left) and Garrett Collins plan to bicycle approximately 4,200 miles from the Pacific coast of Oregon to the Atlantic coast of Virginia in about 60 days. The couple will raise funds to support Lifecycles, a Lancaster-based organization that mentors youths through bicycling experiences.

“But we both had time off and everything else just came into place, so we’re really excited to be going now.” Steinweg, 22, graduated from Manheim Central High School in 2015 and from Messiah College in May with a degree in biology. Steinweg is in the process of applying to physician assistant graduate programs. Collins, 24, graduated from Lebanon Valley College with his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in May and decided to delay his job search a bit so he and Steinweg could bike across the country. Collins, who completed a portion of this bicycling journey with a friend a few years ago, noted, “It’s really amazing some of the people you’ll meet along the way.” For Collins, that included someone trying to set a record while riding a unicycle and members of a group from Harvard University who were using bicycle touring to travel into various parts of the country to teach at-risk children. As Steinweg and Collins ride, they will be raising awareness of and money for Lifecycles, a mentoring program based in Lancaster County that uses bicycling as a means to instill character in young adults. “We wanted to use this trip as an opportunity to raise money for an organization that brings honor to God,” Steinweg shared. “We wanted to

Rita’s relic that remains on the church altar today, had grown too small, and the congregation moved to the third floor, renaming the church St. Theresa’s of Lisieux. Our Lady of Lourdes retains the statue of St. Theresa that represented the namesake in that meeting space. During the time period between 1920 and 1940, church members worked to raise funds to construct a church building in the New Holland area. In July 1940, groundbreaking was held at 149 W. Conestoga St., now the home of the First Baptist Church. The first Mass was said in the church in celebration of Christmas Day in 1940. By 1971, the congregation had once again outgrown the church, and overflow Masses were being held in the Ritz Theater on Main Street. In 1972, the church on Water Street was completed. The church was expanded in 2010 with the addition of the Parish Center. Father Steve Fauser serves as the current pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes, where Masses are held at 5 p.m. on Saturdays and at 7:30, 9, and 10:30 a.m. on Sundays from June through Labor Day. Daily Masses are held at 9 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays and at 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays. Masses are also held on the first Saturday of each month at 9 a.m. Readers who would like to learn more about the church or the centennial celebration activities may visit http://ourlady oflourdesnh.com.

Redemptorists are an order of the Catholic church dedicated to missionary work. “That is an important part of our heritage,” said McGee, who noted that the stained glass windows in the church reflect the Redemptorist beginnings. The Redemptorist missionaries who purchased an Ephrata farm in 1914 to serve as a mission house were instrumental in the founding of parishes including St. Anthony’s in Lancaster, Our Mother of Perpetual Help in Ephrata, and St. James in Lititz. “We are all very related still,” noted McGee of those churches. The Factory earned a degree in pastoral ministries in 2002. Nagle then served as associate pastor in a rural Mifflin County church where he worked with under-resourced youths. “The church positioned itself to work with marginalized teenagers,” explained Nagle, who left that position to take part in an inner city church planting mission in Charlotte, N.C. “The church was focused on breaking down racial barriers that segregate churches,” he noted. In 2008, Nagle returned to Lancaster County to work as a training supervisor at SuperValu Food Distribution Warehouse in Denver. He was tasked with increasing employee retention by 20%, a goal he and his team reached. “I learned a lot about workforce development and what skills are needed,” said Nagle. “I picked up a passion to help in those places.” In 2010, Nagle became lead pastor at Bethany Grace Fellowship in East Earl, where he served for nine years. He lives in Terre Hill with his wife, Tonya, and four children. For several years now, The Factory Ministries, which provides a youth center, a food pantry, and social services, has been working toward achieving the goals mandated by a United Way grant for the Pequea Valley area. The goals include having 100% of area children enter kindergarten ready to learn, 100% of area individuals holding a post-secondary credential, 100% of community members having a medical home, and half of those now living in poverty moving to a better situation in the next decade. Nagle is especially looking forward to working with the Pequea Valley School District and area business leaders on workforce development. “We want to step into that space,” he noted. “The housing crisis is another issue we are excited about addressing,” said Nagle, who is looking forward to having the first Safe Parking Lot on the East Coast open at the center in the fall. The endeavor will include a crisis shelter, currently under construction in the TCC basement. “For individuals who are living out of their cars, it’s illegal to stay in parking lots,” explained Nagle. The center, which has been in the works for some time, will provide a kitchen, showers, and a secure place to sleep. Individuals who benefit from the shelter will engage with The Factory to work toward long-term housing solutions. Nagle praised The Factory Ministries employees he met when he stepped into his new role. “The team here is amazing,” he said, describing the group as young and energetic. “It’s a team that deeply loves people.” He noted that The Factory culture exhibits a “Why not?” attitude when facing an issue. Nagle also lauded the local community for the support the organization received over the last several months. “Through this transition, the community really rallied around The Factory,” said Nagle. “My role is to continue to build on that to work with our community … to build the organizational structure so we can sustain growth … at a healthy level and pace. That’s the heart of where we are at and what I am doing.” Readers who would like to learn more about The Factory Ministries, which is located at 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, may visit www.thefactory ministries.com or call 717-687-9594.

education; compensatory skills, which comprise reading and writing in different communication modes such as braille and large print; visual efficiency skills; and self-advocacy, such as asking for assistance when needed. All of the activities

the campers participated in helped them to develop in these areas. On June 17, the campers journeyed to Triangle Therapeutic Riding, which is in Reinholds and is overseen by Laura Rutledge. “(Horseback riding is) a great recreational activity for children with vision loss (because of) the sensory input, the connection with the animal, and the sense of independence they get from riding,” said Eaton. “The (campers) think they are here just to play with the horse, but it’s so much more than that.” Camp Cool also included a kayaking trip to Indiantown Gap, where the group worked with Team River Runner in a program that was designed for veterans. Camp leaders began working to bolster social confidence with ice breaker games on the first day of camp. “We will work on socialization all week,” said Eaton, who noted that a train ride to Harrisburg was on the agenda to promote use of public transportation. “We will visit the State Museum, tour the Capitol, and ride the riverboat cruise, and … they will experience what it’s like to call for an Uber.” Eaton noted that vision-impaired campers can utilize a smartphone using VoiceOver. The campers also shopped for groceries. “(Campers received) a list of what they need to purchase, and they needed to locate the items within the store,” said Eaton, explaining that they planned to use
Aira, a new technology available in certain public locations. “(Campers) can call in and get a live person who uses the camera on the phone to guide them through the grocery store,” explained Eaton, who added that campers would be encouraged to learn the basic layout and locations of types of food in grocery stores and to not shy away from asking clerks for help. During lunch at Wegman’s, campers were required to ask for large print and braille menus at the café. Eaton noted that money management would be tested. “Each (camper) will have cash and have to know what denomination they are handing the clerk,” she said, noting that there are apps available to help those with very limited vision. Working to develop cooking skills was

part of the plan as well. “(Campers) will prepare desserts for Friday when volunteers from United Way will help beautify our York office space by doing gardening,” said Eaton. “(Campers) will plant flowers and help with weeding and then serve desserts they have created to the volunteers as refreshments.” Readers who would like more information about VisionCorps may visit www.visioncorps.net or call 717-291-5951, ext. 4118.
Campers who took part in the VisionCorps of Lancaster Camp Cool from June 17 to 21 experienced horseback riding, along with kayaking, cooking, and a number of other activities that help them work to achieve independence.

When Jerilyn Oehme planned the first Richard Oehme Memorial Golf Tournament in memory of her father in 2018, she had three goals. After losing her father to suicide, Jerilyn wanted to raise funds for Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC) to help with that organization’s Suicide Prevention Coalition projects. She also wanted to raise awareness of and change the stigma surrounding suicide. Lastly, she hoped that her father’s male friends would come to the outing to remember her father and work to process their loss together. The tournament attracted more than 100 golfers and raised $10,000 for MHALC, and many of her father’s friends did take part in the tournament. A photographer who took pictures of the players talked with the groups as they played and noted that Richard’s friends were sharing their memories of him. “It was helpful because men don’t always talk about feelings and emotions, Jerilyn said. “I think it was nice for them to have this way to remember him. The second Richard Oehme Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at Overlook Golf Course, 2040 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, on Saturday, Sept. 21, beginning at 1:15 p.m. The scramble format tournament will start with all groups of players teeing off simultaneously from different holes. Contests will include longest drive and closest to the pin awards for both male and female players. Other giveaways will be held during the tournament as well. Dinner, following the tournament, is planned for 5:30 p.m. “It will be a
backyard barbecue meal catered by Overlook, said Jerilyn, who added that the hot dogs, hamburgers, and baked beans on the menu are foods that were favored by her father. Jerilyn recently met with Kim McDevitt, who had become executive director of MHALC just before last year’s tournament. “(McDevitt) has a lot of great ideas and initiatives, said Jerilyn. One of those initiatives is a program that will give out free gunlocks and suicide prevention information to those who purchase firearms. “The tournament, in memory of Mr. Oehme, has not only brought to light how nondiscriminating the disease is, but has also brought awareness to the epidemic we are struggling with, said McDevitt. “The proceeds of the tournament have allowed us to increase suicide prevention in education and support in schools and senior centers, (and) it has also allowed us to increase efforts in our gunlock project. Jerilyn has also been encouraged by the frank discussions of suicide she has heard in the media. “It has been cool in the past year hearing how much more (suicide) is being talked about, she said, pointing to the book and podcast titled “Life After Suicide by Dr. Jennifer Ashton. Jerilyn noted, “People are talking about it and talking about mental health. Not to normalize it, but to make it so it’s OK to talk when you struggle. Jerilyn is asking those who wish to participate in the tournament to register by Saturday, Sept. 7. Individuals who would like to take part may call 717-572-1653 or email jco001@lvc.edu.

Monday, July 29. Camp will run through Friday, Aug. 9. Performances will be held at The Junction Center on Saturday, Aug. 10, and Sunday, Aug. 11, at 2 and 7 p.m. each day. “Mary Poppins,” a musical, is based on the book by P.L. Travers, which is the pen name adopted by Helen Lyndon Goff, a British novelist whose childhood experiences provided inspiration for the story of Mary Poppins. Travers’ books were adapted by Walt Disney in 1964 into a musical film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. The stage musical ran on Broadway from 2006 to 2013. The play tells the story of the Banks family in London. The family is struggling with two difficult children, Jane and Michael, played by Cate Caplan and Josiah Henne, respectively. The children have managed to derail every nanny their parents have hired. While George Banks, played by Charlie Hill, insists on a strict nanny, the children are intrigued when the mysterious Mary Poppins, played by Celeste Huyard, appears at their doorstep. Following her lead, the children experience a series of memorable adventures, accompanied by Mary’s sidekick, Bert, played by Gavin Haas, that impact the entire family, including the mother, Winifred Banks, played by Hannah Whisman. Cordell said he chose the classic show because of the fun experience it will offer campers and because of the wisdom it offers to people of all ages. “There are great lessons in it,” noted Cordell. He also wanted to introduce campers to the efforts required to produce a rigorous show such as “Mary Poppins.” “The challenges are living up to the expectation, making it your own, and capturing the magic of Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke,” said Cordell. “(There’s a challenge in) bringing (the show) to life on stage (with a cast of) young people.” According to Cordell, the play is somewhat different from the well-known movie, with a few songs added and others changed slightly, but keeping all the magic of the original. “All the things you love are in there,” said Cordell, who listed “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” “Step in Time,” and “Chim Chim Cher-ee” among the many musical numbers. Music direction for the show will be provided by Amy Rau, and Stephanie Morales will choreograph the dance numbers. Cordell invites area families to make the trip to Manheim to see the show. “Bring the children to The Junction Center,” he said. “It’s a cool space, and you get to see where WJTL broadcasts from.” Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at https://cavod.org or by calling 717-354-3355. Tickets may also be available at the door.
St. John Center Lutheran Church, 599 Reading Road (Route 625), East Earl, will host the Music in the Grove concert series this summer. The weekly concerts will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the church grove. Refreshments and light snacks will be available in the concession stand starting at 5:15 p.m. Summit Hill Bluegrass will perform on Sunday, July 28. People of all ages are invited, and attendees should bring lawn chairs. Handicappedaccessible restrooms will be available. For more information, readers may visit www.sjclutheran.org.

Mobile Clothing Closet Helps People In Need What started out as a one-time clothing drive at Morgantown Community Church (MCC) has now evolved and grown into a full-time clothing ministry, Anchored by Grace Ministries. Through its mobile clothing closet, Anchored by Grace Ministries provides clothing and accessories, as well as toiletries, free of charge to people in need. The trailer is open on select days at MCC, at the Twin Valley Food Pantry, at the Honey Brook Food Pantry and at CrossNet Ministries in New Holland. Erika Kanter, who runs the mobile clothing pantry with her husband, Ian, explained that the community service ministry started in August 2016. “We wanted to help people in need, and when our pastor announced that they were collecting food, I (suggested that we collect) clothing as well,” said Erika. “I was a fashion student, and I love clothing.”
PUBLIC AUCTION
She noted that the food and clothing were distributed the first time in Reading at the corner of 11th and Spruce streets before the trailer was constructed. “It was supposed to be a one-time thing, but it was apparent, especially through a lot of prayer, that there was a need not being met,” Erika said. “I had the vision of the mobile unit where we would be on wheels to get to people in need instead of them having to find a way to get to us.” MCC sponsored the trailer, which took nearly a year to complete. Then, on July 4, 2018, Anchored by Grace Ministries moved into the former Warwick Bible Church in Elverson. “We kept clothing in our house - basement, garage and shed - and quickly outgrew all of that. I was looking for rentals and I found this (building online),” Erika explained. Volunteers use the building to sort clothing donations, which are collected at MCC. “In each vestibule (at the church) there is a barrel with
an anchor on it, and that is where we accept donations,” said Erika. Donations can be made any time the church is open, which includes Sunday mornings and throughout the week. “Right now, we need kids’ clothing, backpacks and back-to-school supplies,” said Erika. “Backto-school time is our busiest time.” Those who visit the mobile clothing closet do not have to provide their names, proof of residency or income details. “We just ask that they take what they need and what they will use,” Erika noted. “We are there to show the love of Christ by action. We want to show them that they are worthy of love regardless of their situation.” The Anchored by Grace mobile clothing closet will be located at the Honey Brook Food Pantry, 5064 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook, during the pantry’s food distributions on Wednesdays, July 24, Sept. 25 and Nov. 27, from 4 to 6:30 p.m.

TOPS Offers Weight Loss Support By Francine Fulton Morgantown, in the Clock Tower Plaza.
TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) is a nonprofit weight loss support group with chapters worldwide. Locally, a TOPS branch meets on Tuesdays from 8:45 to 10 a.m. at The Torch Community Center, 2846 Main St. (Route 23),
The meetings are designed for people of all ages who want to receive help and support to meet their weight loss goals. Each meeting features a weigh-in, a progress report from participants and a health-related program presented by the group leader. Participants are not asked to buy special food or other diet-related products. Rather, they are encouraged to
choose foods they enjoy in moderation and to substitute high-calorie foods with other options. “When we come in, we have about 30 minutes where individuals will get weighed privately,” explained co-leader Sally Kieffer. “The meetings start at 9:15 a.m., and we have a pledge to agree that we’re going to take off pounds sensibly. This is not is a diet or quick fix. We do have guidelines if people
want to use them. After (the pledge), we do a roll call. During that time, we say our name and whether we gained or lost weight, but we don’t have to say how much. When someone loses weight, we cheer, and if they didn’t, we tell them, ‘Today is a new day.’” The program leader then offers a program related to health and wellness. “We have talked about how water is important to wellness, some exercises that we can do that are low-impact, something to help with motivation or how to handle (eating) during a
holiday,” said Kieffer. “These are actual programs given to the leader by TOPS.” Members are asked to pay a yearly fee, which goes to TOPS International. The local chapter also collects a nominal due each week. “We welcome new members any time, and they may attend one meeting free of charge to see if they are interested,” said Kieffer. “There’s no pressure. You can observe the meeting and come back the next week to join.” Many chapter members come from the See TOPS pg 14

We have an average attendance of about 16 to 18 (people),” Kieffer pointed out. She said that the chapter has been meeting locally for at least 30 years. “We used to meet at the West Nantmeal Township Building and then we met at Elverson Borough Hall, but we outgrew those facilities,” Kieffer stated. “The Torch allows us to meet there. It helps their community-based ministry, and it helps us. Occasionally, the (TOPS participants) will collect money and supplies for The Torch to help them because we appreciate them letting us meet there.” Those who pay the membership fee receive a free monthly magazine from TOPS International and information about online resources. “We encourage people to utilize
the online resources,” Kieffer said. “There is an opportunity if you don’t want to meet at a local chapter you can do an online version (of the program).
