Drew Metcalf, of We Help Children, has an offer for those who want to help children but are not sure how. “This is an opportunity for people to get involved,” said Drew. “Everyone wants to do something to help. We would love to show people how.” Getting involved can start with attending A Sweet Night of Music, a drop-in event to be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11, at Stoltzfus Homestead and Gardens, 3716 E. Newport Road, Gordonville. The menu will feature stations of sweets and beverages, and Drew, along with his wife, Cindy, will talk about their ministry helping children in Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, and Chicago, Ill. Live music for the evening will be provided by the Horst Brothers, a local gospel See We Help Children pg 7

part of the autumn event. The tug-owar was begun by James Lafferty in 1965. Unfortunately, due to a number of factors in recent years, participation among local fire companies was waning. In 2018, no tug-o-war was held during the New Holland Farmer’s Fair. “All last year people said how much they would miss it,” recalled Paulene Redding, who oversees the New Holland Farmers Fair parade that kicks off the fair each year. “We didn’t do it, and it wasn’t the same.” Redding and one of her parade sponsors discussed the situation, and he noted how much the Plain community See Tug-0-War pg 2

The Fireman’s Tug-O-War was a fixture at the New Holland Farmers Fair for more than 50 years. After being discontinued in 2018, the rope pull will return in an open format. Organizers are encouraging area businesses, churches, and schools to form teams to take part in this year’s event.

Jessica Sensenig, secretary for Bowmansville Days, which will take place Friday to Sunday, Aug. 9 to 11, wants area residents to know that the organizers of the event work hard to include local entities in the celebration. “We try to have local nonprofit organizations for (food and games),” said Sensenig. “We want the Boy Scouts, churches, and fire companies (to participate) because fundraising is hard.” This year’s Bowmansville Days event, which will be held in the Bowmansville Memorial Park, located along Church Street in Bowmansville, will See Bowmansville Days pg 3

Pupventures Lets The Dogs Out By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Want to make a difference in the life of a dog but cannot commit to full-time ownership? Then you might be a candidate for Pupventures, a program of the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center. Center volunteers have been taking dogs staying at the shelter, 848 S. Prince St., Lancaster, on adventures in the community. “ We have volunteers take the dogs out almost every day,” said site manager Rachel Golub. “We have a list of approved locations for volunteers to take the dogs to as well as general rules for taking the dogs out, such as no greeting other dogs, no going to dog parks, and no one under 18

is allowed to handle the dog. Most people take the dogs to one of the nature preserves, hiking trails, or parks on our approved location list, but they can opt to go to places like Lowe’s or Splits & Giggles as long as we’ve cleared the dog See Pupventures pg 6

Volunteers may take shelter dogs on field trips as part of the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center’s Pupventures program.

missed the tug-o-war. The sponsor recommended opening up the competition to the public. For 2019, the New Holland Farmers Day Association is bringing back the tug-o-war on Thursday, Oct. 3, and Saturday, Oct. 5. Pulls will begin at 8 p.m. each night. Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded to the four top teams. “We will have 12 teams,” said Redding, who noted teams would be added to the roster on a first-come, first-served basis. “A team cannot (weigh) more than 2,100 pounds, but it can be both (men and women),” added Redding. “We are trying to include everyone.” The rules for the competition will be similar to the past regulations. The size of the team will be 10 pullers, plus a captain. The complete roster must be submitted the first night of the pull, and all team members, including one permitted substitute, must weigh in the first night. The substitute must be lighter than anyone he or she replaces. Weigh-in will be held between 6:30 and 7:15 p.m. at the scales located on the corner of South Railroad Avenue and Grant Street. Roll call will be taken each night between 7 and 7:30 p.m. The heaviest team

will pull west, and the line judge or judge’s decision will be final. When the firemen took part in the event, the tug-of-war rules called for the men to wear fireman’s boots, but Redding said that requirement has been dropped. Gloves are optional. Redding said she hopes to see businesses raise teams and battle each other in the event. Churches, church youth groups, and high school classes or teams could also compete against each other. Redding noted that if a business won, the organization might choose to give the winnings to a nonprofit such as a children’s hospital. In addition to competitive teams, Redding said about a dozen volunteers will be needed to help run the competition. She is also looking for a person with enthusiasm and energy to serve as master of ceremonies and call the rope pull. Jeff Barrage served as master of ceremonies from 2006 until 2017. Jim Dissinger became the master of ceremonies and was known as the Voice of Tug-ofWar from 1968 until 2005. Teams must be registered by Friday, Sept. 20, to take part in the competition. Readers who have questions or wish to register a team may call 717-355-2529.

and decided to sign up. “ We thought it sounded like fun,” shared Tanya. The Fresh Air Fund is a not-forprofit agency that connects thousands of children from lowincome families in New York City with host families in rural, suburban, and small-town communities along the East Coast and southern Canada. Youths ages 7 to 18 stay free of charge for one or two weeks of fun and relaxation with a host family. Bus drop-offs occur several times throughout the summer in various locations. For 2019, nearly 100 children left New York City to stay with families in Lancaster County. On July 1, 26 children met their host families at the Junction Center in Manheim in addition to the Leola pickup location. Area readers who would like to host a child next summer may contact Lancaster County Fresh Air Fund representative Marcia Weaver at 717-951-8851 or fill out a form at www.freshair.org to

get started. Pennsylvania clearances and other background checks may be completed through the agency. Volunteer host families may request the preferred age and gender of their Fresh Air child. Children on first-time visits are ages 7 to 12, and children reinvited by the same family may continue through age 18. According to www.freshair.org, more than 1.8 million children from New York City have participated in the cultural exchange program since it began in 1877. On July 1, more than 40 people waited at Groffdale Mennonite Church in Leola for a bus to arrive from New York City. The group consisted of host family members who were eager to meet the 26 Fresh Air children who were scheduled to arrive at 3 p.m. The Sellers family of Denver, Caitlin and Keith and their three children ages 8, 5, and 3, were looking forward to sharing their home in the woods with their assigned child. “We thought it would be a good opportunity to open our world to a child with limited experience,” said Keith, who noted that camping in the backyard was on the family’s agenda. “We have plenty of outdoor activities planned,” added Keith. A picnic and at least one fishing trip were scheduled, along with the camping. The three children said they love fishing. Waiting just a short distance away, Tanya Beakes, also of

Denver, and her two daughters, were anxious to welcome their first Fresh Air child. Hannah Beakes, who is 11, had been communicating with Yvonne Zhuang for some time. “I am looking forward to meeting her in person and getting to know her better,” said Hannah. Tanya noted that the girls already know they have a lot in common, adding that one of their first conversations involved the details of making slime. “We both don’t like roller coasters,” noted Hannah. Tanya said that the family planned to swim, visit a local amusement park, and attend a show at a local Christian theater. “ We’ll be showing her all the stuff there is to do around Lancaster County,” said Tanya. The Beakes family became interested in hosting a Fresh Air child after talking to fellow church members who recommended the experience. They met with one of the coordinators

Garden Spot High School (GSHS) students traveld to Vietnam from June 17 to July 3. The students visited Hanoi home of the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Hoa Lo Prison; Ha Long Bay; and Sa Pa, featuring rice paddies near the Chinese border as well as the homes of the Hmong. They also visited Da Nang and took an ecofarming and fishing tour. In Ho Chi Minh City, the group visited an orphanage and

the Reunification Palace and War Remnants Museum. The trip included a homestay in the Mekong Delta, where many of the residents work on the river and live on boats. The students were encouraged to find a way to give back with a project. GSHS seniors worked with local Vietnam veteran Marlin King, who regularly has specialized wheelchairs made in Ho Chi Minh City delivered to those

in need in Vietnam. To help with the project, students Sarah Shirk, Mandi Rider, Lilly Leaman, Courtney Zwally, Jasmine Arment, Beatrice Gauthier, Savannah Gibble, Paige Kemper, and Titus Marburger held a fundraiser at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. According to Lei Williams, a GSHS teacher who organized the trip, the group distributed 15 wheelchairs to families near Ho Chi Minh City.

While experienced dog owners are preferred, Golub noted that everyone is welcome to volunteer, as all types of dogs are typically available, ranging from low maintenance to highly rambunctious. “Even if someone is inexperienced with dogs, we should have a dog they can walk,” she said. Only dogs available for adoption are able to go on field trips. Each canine is put through a behavior assessment and a personality assessment based on the American SPCA’s Meet Your Match program. Before handing over the leashes, Golub and her staff members ensure that volunteers are qualified and prepared for the responsibility of caring for a dog, even if it is just for a few hours. Once volunteers complete an online application, they receive a link to an orientation video that provides information on the shelter and how to safely move animals in and out of the kennels. After successfully passing a short quiz, the volunteers are scheduled for individual training with a staff member. Pupventures was created to help to reduce kennel stress and to provide dogs with

enrichment and increased visibility in hopes that they will be adopted, said Pennsylvania SPCA public relations director Gillian Kocher. “These outings give the shelter valuable insight on how the dogs behave outside a shelter environment. It’s also a great excuse to spend a day doing something new or exploring what Lancaster and the surrounding area have to offer,” Kocher explained. “Similar programs at shelters across the country have been enormously successful, and the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center is excited to introduce this to the area. We invite the public to be on the lookout for our pups in the community, (accompanied by volunteers who will be) posting photos on social media and helping the adoptables find their families.” The Pennsylvania SPCA is one of 100 shelters nationwide that is participating in the Arizona State University/Virginia Tech Maddie’s Nationwide Fostering Study. Virginia Tech assistant professor Erica Feuerbacher noted that the study will assess the effects of fostering for shelter dogs and the shelters themselves. For more information about volunteering, readers may call Golub at 717-917-6979, ext. 503; email rgolub@pspca.org; or visit www.pspca.org/volunteer.

and bluegrass group. Drew and Cindy plan to update attendees on the growth of their ministry since they first moved their family to Guatemala nine years ago to work with children in orphanages there. “We will tell them what is going on in Central America with children and how to help them,” said Drew. We Help Children has worked to set up Children and Family Help Centers in communities so families can receive local help and give help in return. The Metcalfs and their three children are centered in Guatemala, and Drew travels to Honduras to help children there. A recent addition to the ministry includes connecting with a missionary family working with Belizean individuals who have hearing loss. The new ministry will focus on pregnant teenage girls and new mothers. In Chicago, Samantha Jakus, a Moody Bible Institute graduate who interned with the Metcalfs in Guatemala, works with children in crisis through Reborn Ministries and a local school. The Metcalfs have also taken in orphaned children who need extra help or who are aging out of the orphanage and need to transition into adulthood. “We help them with school and work, and they graduate from us to more independence,” said Drew, who added that a 20-year-old girl who was with the family for nine months recently graduated into living and working on her own. More than half a dozen children have successfully moved into adult life with their help. Drew would like to see his family utilize their abilities to help children on the border of Texas and Mexico. “The solution lies in helping those countries (that people are migrating from),” he said. “Something needs to be done, and we are available to (go there).” Sweet treats that will be served

The transformations in recent years at Our Home of Hope, a personal care home for 30 residents in Columbia, are as numerous as the hands that have helped to make them possible. After the main living area was painted and new pictures were hung on the walls, one resident told board president Mable Hershey that now it feels like walking into a hotel. “It’s like having a new home. They’re just in awe,” Mable shared. Mable and her husband, John, stepped in to help establish the home as a nonprofit organization in 2017 when it was on the brink of being shut down. Administrator Roxanne Simonson, who has been operating the home at 223225 Cherry St. since 2001, reached out to the Hersheys in 2014 about the home’s dire situation. The building, formerly known as the Cherry Street Guest Home, was in disrepair, and the income generated from government funding and disability benefits for the residents was not enough to cover daily and long-term operating costs, let alone any capital improvements needed. The Hersheys had met Roxanne when a homeless man that they were adoptive caregivers for moved into the home. They felt compelled to help and have tirelessly worked to turn things around for the home’s residents and staff - all the while being amazed at the way God provides. The Hersheys noted that God continues to show everyone involved in operating Our Home of Hope that this is His project, as countless individuals act as His hands and feet. This year, a much-needed kitchen renovation was completed - taking that space from cramped and outdated to stateof-the-art. Capital improvements valued at more than $190,000 were made possible through generous

The community is invited to see the renovations, additions, and changes at Our Home of Hope, a personal care home for 30 residents in Columbia, during open houses from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sundays, Aug. 4, 11, and 18.

Key project sponsors included Engel Architects, Andrew Z. Burkholder Construction, The Clark Associates Charitable Foundation, and Premier Custom-Built Cabinetry. In addition, donations provided for exterior painting, replacement windows, and a new side porch and ramp. A new chair lift and the painting of the interior led to residents remarking, “We are treated like special people.” When the Hersheys asked one of the contributors, “How can we ever thank you for providing money?” his response was: “When God has blessed you, you should bless others.” A new dining area provides an open, inviting space where residents can eat and socialize, and it

also has a separate medication dispensing area. New tables replaced the old flimsy tables that would shake so badly that something as simple as someone cutting their meat could cause everyone’s beverages to spill. Our Home of Hope has residents from many walks of life. Some have come from Water Street Mission and off of the street. Our Home of Hope is a resource for Lancaster County Office of Aging, area churches, and other community agencies seeking a permanent home for individuals in need. For some, the home is a last resort for a place to live. The Hersheys noted that many of the residents do not have a family member who could care See Our Home Of Hope pg 13

Mast Family Reunion Planned

Woodcrest Retreat Honors Day Camp Woodcrest Retreat in Ephrata celebrated 50 years of day camp on June 13. Stories and history were shared by J. Elvin Martin, the founder of the program; Phil Horning, who served as program director for 16 of the 50 years; and Cliff Martin, who has served as executive director for 28 years. Four banners made by former staffer Jessica Shope Horn from past camp T-shirts were unveiled. Each banner represented one of the seasons of the year. A commissioning charge and prayer for the 2019 summer staff was given, and guests enjoyed fellowship, refreshments, and tours of the renovated Indian Rock Center. In addition to summer camp programs, Woodcrest provides facilities for all types of retreats, family and business gatherings, and special events. There will also be a variety of children’s activities, including games, barrel train rides, horse and buggy rides and a candy drop from a ladder fire truck. There will also be a silent auction on Saturday. Among the items to be auctioned are Mast Brothers chocolate candy bars, a quilt, wall hangings, woodcrafts and baked goods. “People are bringing antique quilts from their great-great-grandparents (to donate to the auction). It’s kind of special that people want to share,” said Mast. Food will also be for sale beginning at 4 p.m., including sausage sandwiches, barbecue chicken, soft ice cream, homemade whoopie pies and homemade pies and cookies. “It will be fun for people from out of state to enjoy the food (from this

A hymn sing will begin at 5:30 p.m. On Aug. 4, an outdoor worship service will take place at 9:30 a.m. A lunch will follow at 11:30 a.m. and consist of traditional bean soup, homemade bread and jam and whoopie pies, which will be provided. “We’re putting up a big tent behind the sanctuary, which will overlook the peaceful Conestoga Valley where our ancestors came and settled,” Mast stated. “For those who have been to Switzerland, it looks likes Swiss farmland even though we do not have the Alps. They were comfortable settling here in the tri-county area when they came over in the 1700s. There is a spiritual connection there.” A donation will be collected to attend the reunion. To register in advance or for more information, readers may contact Mast at lois@masthof.com or 484-7988556. Reservations will also be accepted at the door.

The 2019 Mast Gathering, a reunion of the Mast family that immigrated to America from Switzerland in the 1700s, will take place on Friday, Aug. 2, through Sunday, Aug. 4, at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St., Morgantown. Highlights of the weekend will include a field trip to local sites, historic seminars, an auction and children’s activities. The event will conclude with an outdoor worship service on Sunday. Lois Ann Mast of Morgantown, who is co-chair of the event, explained that the reunion is open to all with the last name of Mast, as well as those who have Mast relatives. “You do not have to have a last name of Mast (to attend). You can be a wife of a Mast or have a grandmother who was a Mast,” she said. “There are people coming from 20 different states. They want to learn about their heritage.” The reunion is being organized

by a steering committee consisting of Masts from Morgantown, Hamburg, Ephrata and Lancaster, as well as out-of-state family members from Maryland, Ohio and South Carolina. “(Committee members) were responsible to tell their families in their areas, and it spread by word of mouth,” said Mast. “I am still getting registrations every day.” Mast, whose maiden name is Zook, organized a Zook reunion in 2016 at the same location. More than 600 Zooks attended the event, which was called the Zaugg Versammlung, which is Swiss German for Zook reunion. The Mast Gathering will begin on Aug. 2 with a field trip to historic sites where many of the early Mast immigrants first settled when they came to America. The field trip will end at a local Amish home for a traditional supper. Mast noted that the chartered buses for the field trip are filled; there is a waiting list to take part. On Aug. 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., there will be seminars offered at

for them, and some of the residents never have visitors. The residents are family to each other. Mable shared that the recent improvements to the home have helped to make the residence truly “Our Home of Hope” for the residents, some of whom have lived there for more than 15 years. It is their home, and Mable relayed that many say that it now feels like they have a new home. The residents say they truly feel that someone thought them worthy of living in a cheery, permanent home. Board members are hopeful that others will catch that vision and help with the remaining needs, which include three bathroom updates; laundry room improvements including a new ceiling, floor, and cabinets; and an office floor replacement. An annual gift to sponsor one of the 30 residents for $4,500 a year will help Our Home of Hope to operate and continue to give a home to residents who would not have another place to live. The community is invited to visit Our Home of Hope during upcoming open houses on Sundays, Aug. 4, 11, and 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. More information about the home is available at www.ourhomeofhope.com or www.facebook.com/ourhome of hope. Financial contributions may be sent to Our Home of Hope Inc., Attn: Mable Hershey, 225 Cherry St., Columbia, PA 17547. The home will also be part of the Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 22, for the first time.

The program also includes special opportunities for youths to learn about healthy eating and try new foods. Readers may contact Erin Elliott at 717-799-5656 for more information.
