On June 27, local fraud fighters Jen Parsons and Chad Davis of MidPenn Bank met with nearly 20 attendees at the Fighting Financial Fraud seminar held at the ELANCO Library.
Early in the presentation, Davis asked for a show of hands among attendees who had been victims of fraud or attempted fraud. He then asked those who did not raise their hands if a friend or family member had been affected by fraud. All but about three attendees had raised their hands.
The incidence of cyber crime in the U.S. nearly doubled from 2019 to 2022, affecting most members of the community who utilize email and cell phones, but fraud attempts are also made over landlines. Parsons and Davis described several types of fraud, including phishing, cloning, spoofing, tech-support scams, ransom, emergency or grandparent scams,
Fraud fighters
and the Publishers Clearing House scam.
The pair explained that phishing usually involves a text or email that asks for personal information. Parsons warned that a bank will not contact an individual and ask for personal information. “(If you receive a call) asking for a credit card number, bank account number, or password credentials, do not share it with them,” she said. Davis added that fraudsters will try to frighten targets into divulging information, and Parsons said that hanging up and calling the institution the caller says he or she represents will usually uncover the trick. Parsons noted that spoofing may involve a notice that a package is about to arrive. “They may want you to call, and they will try to get information,” she said, adding that the notice may appear to come from a legitimate delivery service and even include what appears to be that company’s website.

Now in its 40th year, Churchtown Day will be presented by the Caernarvon Historical Society on Saturday, Aug. 3. In addition to community yard sales along Main Street through the town, there will be a pancake breakfast at the Caernarvon Fire Company and a sale of items offered at the historical society building. The event will be held rain or shine.
Yard sales will begin at 7 a.m. on Route 23 in Churchtown, as well
as in neighboring communities. Caernarvon Historical Society will also host a flea market at its property, 2148 Main St., Narvon, and at Caernarvon Township Park next door.
According to historical society president Yvonne Styer, Churchtown Day began in 1984 and is always held on the first Saturday in August. The only year the event was not held was 2020 due to the pandemic. “(Churchtown Day) used to be just (yard sales at) people’s houses and the society.

Vendors are responsible for cleaning up any debris and items they do not sell. The historical society reserves the right to refuse yard sale vendors that are not offering appropriate items for sale.
In addition, the Caernarvon Fire Company will offer an all-you-can-eat

Museum displays are changed several times a year. “Currently on display are items the people have recently donated to our society - anything that pertains to the history of
Caernarvon Township,” Styer said.
The Caernarvon Historical Society is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to preserving the history of Caernarvon Township. The society was first established in 1975 to restore the Caernarvon Presbyterian Chapel, built in 1843, for the bicentennial of the United States in 1976. career exploration and mentoring to every sophomore at Pequea Valley High School (PVHS), Newborg signed on. “I said, ‘That sounds like an amazing opportunity,’” Newborg recalled.
During the 2023-24 schoolyear, Newborg mentored two PVHS sophomore girls. Erb had set up a program for mentors and mentees to meet at the school on a regular basis and to connect by email. “We talked about likes, interests, work history, and sports,” explained Newborg, who noted that after establishing background information, the mentors and mentees worked on job acquisition skills such as how to build a résumé, what to wear and how to behave during an interview, and what to look out for when searching for a job. Newborg shared that one of the students was interested in going into business and the other was trying to narrow a path
after talking to friends and family who are in business and nursing. “She was still trying to figure out her purpose,” noted Newborg.
Newborg has been with GSV for nearly a decade, working as an employment recruiter and in human resources. She feels strongly about the mission of the retirement community, which focuses on “purpose, opportunity and living life to its fullest.” “I wanted to build up our relationship with local schools,” explained Newborg. “It’s important that we tap into that next generation and break the stigma that we are an old person home.”
Newborg added that she wants young people to know that a retirement community offers much for retirees and for employees. GSV employment opportunities range from culinary and nursing to technical support, marketing, maintenance, sales, and more.

Newborg’s involvement in the mentor program is an extension of that goal.
“Everybody has a time and place to be somewhere,” she noted. “Be in the moment, learn what you can, take what you need, and leave what you don’t.”

Celebratin’ bacon
BY ANN MEAD ASH
When Dena Krebs, marketing coordinator with Stoltzfus Meats, was looking for a way to celebrate the business’s 70th anniversary, she visited a festival in a neighboring town devoted to a special Pennsylvania treat made with chocolate and cream.
“It got me thinking about the community aspect of it, and I thought, ‘Why don’t we do something like that here, but base it on bacon?’” she stated.
The result of that research is the first Baconfest, which will
be held in Intercourse Community Park, 3730 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gordonville, on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. A variety of activities are planned, including demonstrations, a bounce house, yard games, and food trucks offering bacon-themed food items for purchase.
The event will kick off with the Bakin’ with Bacon entry drop-off from 9 to 10:30 a.m. “Jere Gish from WGAL will be one of the judges,” said Krebs of the competition, which is open to any baker and any baked good as long as
bacon is an ingredient. The contest winner will be announced at 2:45 p.m.
At 10:15 a.m., an Intercourse Library representative will read “Don’t Forget the Bacon” to children and adults. “It’s a giant picture book,” noted Krebs.
Live entertainment at the event will include the DKers juggling at 10:45 a.m. and the oneman-band talents of Nick DiSanto at 11:30 a.m.
stevensfire.org
WJTL will begin a remote broadcast at 1 p.m. Big Boy Brass will perform at 4:30 p.m.
Demonstrations will begin at 1 p.m. Myron Stoltzfus, an owner of Stoltzfus Meats, and his son, Zach, will bring a portable smoker to the venue. “(They) will explain the process of smoking bacon, taking it out, and carving it,” said Krebs, who added that samples will be available.
Tony Page, who works in product development for Stoltzfus, will demonstrate cooking Bacon-
Wrapped Kielbasa Bombs from 2 to 2:30 p.m. “He’ll be giving away samples to those who come to watch,” shared Krebs.
A griller eating competition will be held at 3 p.m. Krebs explained that a griller is a sausage, but shaped like a hot dog. “That will be a lot of fun,” said Krebs, who noted the contest was inspired by the company’s participating in scrapple-eating competitions held at the Ephrata Fair. “We are looking for contestants,” she noted, adding that a free T-shirt will be given to each entrant.
Food trucks located at the event will sell items ranging from pizza, chicken sandwiches, and burgers to ice cream. Each food truck will support a nonprofit organization with an initial deposit and a portion of sales.
Nonprofits that will be represented include the Clinic for Special Children, Intercourse Fire Company, The Factory Ministries, the 4-H Swine Club, the Intercourse Lions Club, the Intercourse Library, and the Pequea Valley Education Foundation. Information about the nonprofits will be available for attendees. E&A Candies and Immergut Hand-Rolled Soft Pretzels will be on-site as well.
“The plan is to make (Baconfest) an annual event,” shared Krebs, adding, “It’s a group event. We want to put the focus on the community. There are so many of us working on this.”
More information about the first annual Baconfest may be found at www .stoltzfusmeats.com.
Cookin’ up the inaugural Baconfest in Intercourse are (from left) Elizabeth Schaffer-Yoder, Tricia Lacock, Dena Krebs, and Kelly Metzler.

Davis also mentioned a tech-support scam that may involve a phone call, pop- up, or email that looks like it is from a cyber security company pointing to problems with a computer system and the need for information from you. “They will be looking for bank information,” said Davis, who noted that victims may be asked to click a link. “They may offer to scan the system and clean things up and ask for credit card information,” he added. “Don’t click on links

like that, and don’t take phone calls of that nature,” he cautioned. Parsons also mentioned the cloning of phone numbers so that a phone’s caller identification will make the number appear to be legitimate. Similar issues occur with email. “Is it OK to open an email if you don’t click on the link?” asked Parsons, who told the story of a business that was hacked in this way. An attendee recommended using the reading pane to look at emails rather than opening them, and Davis noted that compromised phones and other devices can be taken to local professionals to be scanned for issues. The presenters spent significant time discussing the emergency or grandparent scam, which plays on the emotions of the victim. “You get a call telling you your grandson has been in a terrible car accident. He is in the hospital. He killed a woman with his car, and he’s facing charges as soon as he gets out of the hospital,” said Parsons, who noted the caller will ask for a specific amount of money to cover the grandchild’s bail to be wired or sent. The caller may also pretend to be a family member. “Is this something your loved one might do?” asked Parsons, who recommended talking to a spouse or other relatives before
taking any action. She told of a scam that was headed off when the jail supposedly holding the grandson was contacted, and the jail confirmed that the grandson was not there. Parsons also recommended developing a family password or safe word that can be used for identification purposes. “Make it something simple that you guys would know,” she noted. The Publishers Clearing House scam involves a phone call or other notification saying the recipient has won something. “You don’t pay anything up front when you’ve won something,” noted Davis. Again, the tactic of hanging up and calling the organization supposedly offering this prize was recommended.
Old-fashioned methods of fraud still abound, according to Parsons. “Check fraud is still a thing,” she said. “People steal checks from mailboxes and alter them.” She recommended using bill paying systems offered by banks and mailing checks to post office boxes rather than street addresses. Davis added that checks should not be accepted from unfamiliar individuals, and people should let a check sit at the bank for four or five days before delivering the merchandise they are selling to the writer of the check.

A screening of the documentary “A Ride for Freedom” will be held on Friday, Aug. 2, at 7 p.m. at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland. Lancaster County District Attorney Heather Adams will deliver opening remarks. Registration is required at https:// ARideforFreedom.eventbrite.com.
“A Ride for Freedom” documents the journey of an eight-person team of ultra-endurance cyclists taking part in the 2023 Race Across America (RAAM), along with the team’s support crew from the anti-child trafficking organization ZOE International. This 3,000-mile, nonstop transcontinental relay began on June 17, 2023, and took the cyclists from the California coast to Maryland over six days.
Through interviews and cinematic visuals, “A Ride for Freedom” showcases the physical and mental fortitude required to compete in RAAM. It also spotlights the team’s commitment to raising awareness of child trafficking.
The majority of the cyclists who participated are from Lancaster County; the participants were Nate Eakin, Matt Lapp, Tom Jordan, Craig Whiteford, John Glick, Kevin Quinter, Merv Beiler, and Jeff Conaway. They trained beginning in the fall of 2022, logging hundreds of hours of stationary cycling, road riding, and strength training. The team secured second place in 2023 and plans to ride again in 2025 to fight against child trafficking.
The idea for ZOE’s participation in RAAM ignited when Brad Ortenzi, ZOE’s Eastern U.S. regional director and team manager, visited ZOE’s campus in Thailand to meet the young trafficking survivors in 2014.
Ortenzi also serves as the coordinator of Lancaster and Berks County’s Human Trafficking Task Force. ZOE East Coast has established partnerships with county agencies and organizations to identify those vulnerable to trafficking. Through these collaborative efforts, ZOE aims to assist trafficking victims and at-risk youths in the southeast Pennsylvania region, offering a range of services, such as support for law enforcement during sting operations, trauma-informed activities, mentorship, and access to resources.
ZOE International is a global organization dedicated to fighting human trafficking through prevention, rescue, and restoration programs. More information can be found at www.gozoe.org.
