St. John Center from pg 1 sing will feature selections by the combined choirs of St. John Center; Mellinger’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, under the direction of Carl Tobias; and Muddy Creek Lutheran Church, under the direction of Greg Gehman. The event will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 22. Additional activities will include an organ recital by Dr. Robert Horton, organist and choirmaster of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Lancaster, on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 4 p.m. The event will feature Horton on the organ and harpsichord. The church will also host an evening of scary Bible stories in the graveyard on Sunday, Oct. 27, at 6 p.m. On Saturday, Nov. 9, lyric tenor Dr. Jun Chon will return to give a 3 p.m. concert with Kissinger, titled “Together Again. Chon took part in the church’s annual Music Sunday event in June. Chon, who lives in Ephrata, is a vocalist who sings at concerts, weddings, and other events. He and his wife, Joyce, have three daughters. Chon, a graduate of Tulane University, earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Thomas Jefferson
University Hospital. He is the previous medical director of WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital Hospitalist Services and president of the hospital’s medical staff. As a hospitalist, he was also a member of WellSpan Internal Medicine. The first cornerstone for St. John Center was placed in December of 1819, but earlier evidence of church activity is found in a gravestone, which is dated 1777. The gravestone marks the burial place of a child named Elisabet, who was a daughter of one of the founders of the church. At the time that the cornerstone was placed, the single pastor served seven area congregations, with St. John at the “center. The church was used by both Lutheran and Reformed congregations until 1969. The original building was replaced by the present one in 1872, and in the 1950s an addition was constructed at the west end. That addition now houses the altar alcove and restrooms on the lower level. At the same time the addition was built, a Good Shpeherd painting in the church was replaced by one of Christ ascending into heaven. In June, the church held a Music Sunday event, which pastor Thomas Darr said was well attended. “We have had good response so far, he noted. “We had nearly a packed house for Music Sunday. For more information, readers may visit http://sjclutheran .org or call 717-445-5505.

CVS Expands Medication Disposal Program CVS Pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health, has announced the expansion of its safe medication disposal program in Pennsylvania, adding disposal units in 80 CVS Pharmacy stores in communities across the state by the end of the year. This is in addition to the existing 26 units already installed, bringing the in state total to 106. Promptly disposing unused medications can help reduce the potential that they will be diverted or misused. Nationwide, the company has installed more than 1,300 in-store safe medication disposal units. The company has also donated more than 970 units to community organizations such as police departments, including 135 units in Pennsylvania. Through this national effort, 408 metric tons, or around 900,000 pounds, of unwanted medication has been collected, including over 41,000 pounds in Pennsylvania alone. CVS Pharmacy plans to roll out
additional safe medication disposal units across the country by the end of 2019 as part of a commitment announced at the end of last year to help provide more disposal options in communities. The company is also partnering with Google Maps to make it easier for consumers to find yearround medication disposal options. CVS Health’s commitment to helping prevent and address prescription drug misuse extends to community education and increasing access to the opioid overdose-reversal drug naloxone. The company’s Pharmacists Teach program brings CVS pharmacists to schools across the country to talk to students and parents about the dangers of prescription drug abuse. More than 507,000 students across the country, including over 30,700 in Pennsylvania, have participated in the program. General information about CVS Pharmacy is available at www.cvshealth.com.

A good share of Lancaster County experienced a devastating storm on May 28 and KAUFFMAN’S orchards were not spared. Hail, driven by a strong wind, fell for about ten minutes - plenty of time to permanently mar many, many (most?) of the tiny fruitlets on our trees. It is to be some of the worst damage our Orchard has seen in over 70+ years! So although this year our fruit may look less than perfect on the outside, nothing has changed on the inside. KAUFFMAN’S peaches are just as delicious, and just as nutritious, as ever you experienced in years gone by! So come in and enjoy some delicious, juicy peaches all season long at a great, great price.

Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Lancaster and Lebanon will launch its fall season on Monday, Sept. 9. Approximately 900 girls ages 8 to 14 on more than 66 teams will participate in the 10-week program. The girls, from Lancaster and Lebanon counties, will learn about self-esteem, positive body image, and setting and achieving goals through a curriculum that combines experiential games with physical activity to address the whole girl’s health, consisting of physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual components. Hundreds of volunteer coaches facilitate the curriculum, and their efforts are sponsored by LOA Orthodontics. The program will prepare the girls for the Girls on the Run 5K, which will take place on Saturday, Nov. 23, at Millersville University at 9 a.m. The event will be presented by Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster. The girls will select running buddies to join and encourage them on the course. The 5K event is a fundraiser and is open to the community. Girls on the Run of Lancaster and Lebanon, part of Girls on the Run International, is a nonprofit, physical-activity based, positive youth development program. The character development organization combines the healthy activity of running with an interactive 20-lesson curriculum designed to promote good choices for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Russ Akinin hit a hole-in-one at the Hinkletown Mennonite School (HMS) golf tournament held at French Creek Golf Club on June 18. It was shot on the fifth hole, a 106-yard par 3 with an elevated green, preventing the golfer from seeing the hole from the tee box. It was not Akinin’s first hole-in-one. Akinin, an HMS parent and a real estate agent, had never golfed the French Creek course, though he was involved in the construction of the course as an irrigation technician. Akinin was presented with the flag from the fifth hole and will receive the prize of a luggage set. Fifty-eight golfers, along with presenting sponsor Brubacher Inc., banquet sponsor Zook Interiors, and an additional 10 sponsors, participated in the annual golf tournament. The tournament proceeds go toward ensuring that a Christ-centered education at HMS is accessible

including dinner and a show. As in the past, attendees will be able to visit the food stations, which will lead to a large tent where beverages and desserts will be found. The menu for the gala was chosen by event coordinator Allison Cuthie from a selection offered by Garden Spot Village in partnership with another food provider. The 2019 menu will be similar to previous galas, with an “around-the-world” selection of small plates, interactive desserts, and fizzy nonalcoholic beverages, as well as coffees and teas. Organizers have also arranged for attendees to enjoy live music provided by a jazz pianist from the Louis Pettinelli Jazz Group of Philadelphia. Recommended dress for the evening is “date-night attire,” which Dahl explained is not fullon formal. “You can dress up, but you don’t have to go all out,” she noted. Local photographer Amy Marburger will be on-site to take free photos for attendees. “Get a
nice picture of yourself and your date or you and your friends,” Dahl encouraged. To keep the event relaxed for guests, there is no formal program. Dahl will give a short speech to express appreciation to attendees. CrossNet Ministries offers a variety of programs to the community, including a youth center, social services programs, Power Packs, a nutrition center, a summer lunch program, after-school programs for elementary-age students, and more. The ministry currently operates from three locations on Franklin Street in New Holland. Funds raised by the gala are derived from ticket sales and sponsorships. Garden Gala organizers hope to raise $55,000 for the ministry’s general fund. The gala will be held rain or shine. Tickets are limited. For tickets and details, readers may call 717-355-2454 or visit www.elancocross.org.

The Lancaster Civil War Roundtable will present “Weapons of Mass Destruction Considered During the Civil War on Thursday, Aug. 8, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz. Mark Laubacher will present the program. In an effort to bring about resolution to the Civil War, creative suggestions and research were offered by individuals, many of whom were civilians. Suggestions involved the use of chemical and biological agents as unconventional weapons. Both sides considered weaponizing numerous chemicals and biological agents, including poison gas from a balloon, fuse-activated sulfur smoke cartridges, Chinese stink balls, and smallpox-contaminated clothing for Union forces. Laubacher is a registered nurse and paramedic working as a Certified Specialist in Poison Information since 1992 at the Central Ohio Poison Center located at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Columbus, Ohio. In 2013, Laubacher presented a paper at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine Conference; his topic was snake bites received by Union and Confederate soldiers. A review of unconventional weapons that were considered during the Civil War was given in New Orleans in September 2014 to the North American Congress of Clinical Toxicology. The program is free and open to the public. For more information, readers may email lancaster civilwarroundtable@gmail.com, visit www.lancastercivilwarround table.org, or call Micky at 717-940-7411.
