Garden Spot

Celebrating summer nights

Once upon a time, CrossNet Ministries held an annual gala in the gardens at Garden Spot Village (GSV). Then, when COVID-19 restrictions arose, organizers switched to an appropriately socially distanced drive-in event, also held at GSV.

Last summer, a new fundraiser was born. “(2023) was the first year for the Summer Nights Dinner and Auction,” said Carl Edwards, director of development and ministries with CrossNet. “It’s like a hybrid,” explained Edwards. “We melted together everything we liked from the others into an informal, casual (event) that has a tailgate feel.”

According to Edwards, guests park in a grass lot at GSV. Attendees bring their own small tables and folding chairs and listen to a live band while enjoying a variety of foods.

This year’s Summer Nights Dinner and Auction will be

held on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 6 to 9 p.m. Parking at lot number nine at GSV, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, will begin at 5:30 p.m.

The ticketed event will feature a diverse menu served from individual tents to give the gathering a “festival” feel. Among the

offerings will be smash burgers, sweet potato and black bean tacos, watermelon feta salad, BLT lettuce wraps, an al pastor skewer, Nashville chicken egg rolls, and peanut butter and jelly strudel.

According to Edwards, the live auction is a large part of the

25th Peach Fest planned

The first Peach Festival held by Cedar Grove Church was organized in 1999 to raise funds to help pay off the mortgage on the new Christian education wing the church had recently added. A quarter of a century later, the church has long paid off the mortgage, but the Peach Festival is still observed with a portion of the proceeds benefiting a ministry. This year, a local organization, Revelations of Freedom Ministries (ROFM), will receive a percentage of the funds raised by the event.

fundraiser. “We have a great list of 15 to 20 live auction items,” said Edwards, who noted a number of experiences are among the items that will be going up for bid. “We have two tickets to an Eagles home game, hot air balloon rides, and our top experience is an Outer Banks vacation,” noted

Edwards, who pointed out that a meat box gift subscription from Stoltzfus Meats will be available again this year. Edwards said that the three-month subscription features a variety of meats including breakfast, grilling, and snack items. Meghan Ervine, director of marketing

New Holland Summer Fest coordinator Nate Martin likes to share the story of how the New Holland community pulled together to help a contestant at the 2023 event. “A team called me on Friday,” recalled Martin, who noted the Smoke Craft barbecue team was on its way from Virginia to New Holland to compete in Summer Fest. “They had trailer problems, but they wanted to get here to do the competition no matter what it took,” Martin shared.

After several phone calls,

Martin learned that the team’s trailer could not be repaired. He quickly called Meadow Creek Barbecue Supply, and the business offered a smoker for the team to use. Smoke Craft team members grabbed the bare necessities they needed for competing and headed north in a pickup truck.

“The Summer Fest committee picked up the smoker and set up a spot for (the Smoke Craft team near Kinzer Avenue),” shared Martin, who added that other competing teams and Summer Fest sponsors pulled together the other items Smoke Craft needed. “(Smoke Craft) had never cooked

and communications for CrossNet, added that a Bevanda cooler made by a local company will be auctioned as well. Patrick Morgan will donate his time to serve as auctioneer. In addition to the auction, door prizes, consisting of new items donated by local merchants,

will be given away.

Edwards and Meredith Dahl, CrossNet executive director, will give a brief presentation about the ministry during the event.

Both Ervine and Edwards pointed out that the food at the event was a big hit last year. “It’s such a fun evening,” said Ervine. “On one of the last nights of summer, why not be there with your community and have a great time?”

Edwards agreed, adding, “It’s so much fun to have before the chaos and hustle and bustle of school starting.”

First, parents should get their children involved. Have children make a list of their favorite foods from each food group - starch, protein, vegetable, fruit, and dairy - and get them excited by bringing them to the store to shop for their favorites. Together, parents and children can build a balanced lunch, making sure children have one item from each of the five food groups. Ideas for a balanced lunchbox include English muffins, sliced ham, carrots, strawberries, a cheese stick, wheat crackers, hummus, sugar snap peas, clementines and nonfat Greek yogurt.

Preordered pies may be picked up during the event. “(The pies) are famous,” noted Peach Fest organizer Betty Ferstler. “Someone comes in and buys 10 of them.”

on one of these cookers before, but (the team) ended up getting reserve grand champion,” said Martin.

The 25th annual New Holland Summer Fest will be held on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 23 and 24, at New Holland Community Park on East Jackson Street, New Holland. The event will feature a State Champion Barbecue (SCB) competition on Aug. 23 and the Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) competition on Aug. 24.

This year, Martin hopes to line up more than 60 teams for the two competitions. “Friday night we hold a cookoff sanctioned by the SCA,” explained Martin. “The winner of that is automatically invited to the SCA World Championship at Fort Worth in Texas.” The main Summer Fest competition is the KCBS event, which

from pg 1

usually involves four main categories - chicken, ribs, pork, and brisket. “Summer Fest is unique because we add three more,” noted Martin, who added that sausage, whole hog, and chef’s choice are also part of the competition. This year, in celebration of the 25th anniversary, Martin plans to name the chef’s choice award after founder Chuck Sheffield. Entries are judged in a double-blind test by KCBS qualified judges. “Entries are scored on appearance, tenderness, and taste,” said Martin, who added that the best entrant in the four categories is the grand champion.

To involve the community more in the competition, coordinators have scheduled a variety of activities during the fest. The park will open at 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 23, and by 11 a.m., food vendors, including the Summer Fest stand selling chicken barbecue dinners, will be open. Stands selling ice cream, seafood, and barbecue will be on-site, and the Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) canteen will sell burgers, hot dogs, and french fries.

The Loyal Christian Benefit Association (LCBA) Branch 1557 held meetings on June 18 and July 16 at the Udder Choice Restaurant in Ephrata. State Rep. David Zimmerman was scheduled to be the speaker at the July 16 gathering.

The June 18 event began with a light supper, after which the meeting was opened by president Linda Mueller. The Lord’s Prayer was recited.

The speaker was Geoffrey Lapp, founder of Minutemen-UNITED, a local organization that connects people in need to assistance and community support services. Through that work, he saw a need for affordable transportation for people who do not own a working vehicle. Lapp then founded Waymark Transport, which offers daily driving services for neighborhood transportation needs as well as contracted driving services for transport of employees and clients. Following Lapp’s presentation, attendees discussed current and new business. The June haus and pinochle card parties were well attended, and proceeds will be distributed to community nonprofits in November. Upcoming events include a picnic on a Sunday in September, with the date forthcoming, and a cash bingo on Sunday, Oct. 6, at the Denver Fire Company. The bingo event will include giveaway drawing prizes, and the event’s proceeds will be distributed to local nonprofits.

Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at the Udder Choice Restaurant, 1812 W. Main St., with dinner at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting at 6:30 p.m. The local LCBA motto is “loving God - embracing others - impacting community.” New members are welcome. For more information, call 717-471-3131.
