GSHS Marchers Band Together BY ANN MEAD ASH
hen Garden Spot High School (GSHS) band director Rich Fitz was searching for a musical theme for the 2021 fall marching band drill, he was looking for something that would wow audiences. “(I wanted to) let the crowd know we’re back,” said Fitz, who noticed band students talking about “The Greatest Showman” and decided to give the music a try. “The arrangements I found have worked out really well,” said
W
Fitz, who wrote the drill himself. Band camp was held at GSHS from July 26 through 30, with morning sessions from 8 a.m. to noon and evening sessions from 6:30 p.m. until the light faded. Because of construction in the stadium, the camp was held at the field adjacent to the tennis courts. About 100 students turned out for camp, led by Fitz and assistant teachers Colton Henry and Laura Henry, who instructs the color guard. Veronica Fox, Lejla Hamzic, and Bryna Kelly serve as drum
majors. The band includes 21 color guard members. Band boosters set up a tent at one end of the field where they provided snack foods and shade during camp. Theme nights, which encouraged students to dress up for the evening practice, included “Olympics/USA,” “Wild West,” and section night, among others. On Friday night, parents were invited to come and watch the group perform the fall drill. The big top theme of a show called “The Greatest Showman”
gave Fitz the opportunity to incorporate circus elements into the drill, including a tightrope walk and a surprise finale. Color guard members will work with a variety of props, including sabres, rifles, 5-foot flags, ribbons, swing flags, and massive flags, and they will also dress as characters from “The Greatest Showman.” The show will start off with “The Greatest Show,” which Hamzic referred to as “fast and bubbly.” The ballad, which is “Never Enough,” will transition into “From Now On.” Kelly

During 2020, COVID-19 restrictions resulted in an online format for ELANCO Released Time’s New Holland Elementary School program. Looking to the fall of 2021, Deb Reimers, who coordinates the New Holland location, is excited to be holding the program in person again, but she is also concerned that Released Time may have to be capped at 60 students due to a shortage of volunteer adult listeners. “(Before) we were shut down, I had 36 listeners, and we had 115 students,” recalled Reimers. “I only have 15 listeners now.” Students in third through sixth grades at New Holland Elementary School will receive papers about the program during the first week of school, which will begin on Monday, Aug. 30. Children who choose to take part will ride a bus from the school to Petra Church on Airport Road in New Holland each Thursday at 2:15 p.m.

Christopher Robin, Piglet, Owl, Rabbit, Kanga, Roo, Tigger, and Eeyore. Artist Roslyn Bansner, a longtime supporter of the library, donated the mural as part of the ongoing capital campaign for the new building. The library now boasts an additional 5,000 square feet, and the children’s area is home to the floor-to-ceiling wall mural. Inspired by the artwork at Lititz Public Library, young patrons are invited to place their mark on the new library by dipping a finger into yellow paint to create fingerprint bees to surround the hives where Pooh gets his honey. More information about the library is available at www.adamstownarealibrary.org.

Drive-In Experience: Take Two! BY ANN MEAD ASH
In the summer of 2020, organizers of CrossNet Ministries’ annual evening gala traditionally held in the Garden Spot Village (GSV) gardens, sought a way to hold a safe event in the midst of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. The result was the first CrossNet Drive-In Dinner and Auction. CrossNet Ministries director Meredith Dahl noted that the event leant itself to the continued uncertainty

In the summer of 2020, there was no band camp due to COVID-19 restrictions. Fitz said that being able to have camp again feels nice. “It was obvious from the first day that the kids are excited to be here,” he said. “They are so energetic and happy.” Section leader Emma Kauffman echoed Fitz’s sentiments about being together, saying. “We built a lot of relationships (during camp).”

Released Time from pg 1 Shop, Dutch-Way Farm Market, Yoder’s, and Fox Meadows Creamery. Items that will be auctioned live will include a hot air balloon ride, a Garden Spot Fire Rescue ladder truck experience, an ice cream truck party by Lickity Split, and a boat ride with dinner on the Chesapeake Bay. “ We have something for everybody,” noted Dahl. To keep the atmosphere lively, Downtown Sound will play a variety of music from the 1960s to the 1980s. “It’s fun pop music … Motown … music that people know,” said Dahl, who will provide a brief update on the ministry along with Carl Edwards, director of development and ministries. A video on the ministry will be shown as well. “Every ticket comes with a gift,” said Dahl, who noted that last year CrossNet lunch coolers were given away. “It’s just a great night out supporting CrossNet and the community,” she added. Tickets, which will be based on two people per car with an extra charge for additional riders, may be purchased by calling 717-355-2454, visiting www.elancocross.org, or stopping in at CrossNet’s 123 W. Students receive awards for each 25 points they earn. For each 15 points students earn, they have a chance to put their name in a camp box. Each grade has its own camp box. At the end of the spring session, two students’ names from each grade will be chosen randomly from the boxes to win a camp scholarship. At Petra, students will be divided into two groups, with the third- and fourth-graders meeting in Petra’s multipurpose room and the fifth- and sixth-grade students meeting in The Oasis. “They are taught (a lesson), and we sing songs and pray with them during the first 20 minutes,” said Reimers. The ELANCO Released Time program uses a two-year sequential curriculum that begins with the establishment of God as Creator. The program establishes that humans are sinful and in need of a savior and that God provides a way to salvation through Jesus Christ. “The second 20-minute (period), they have listening time,” said Reimers, who explained that the students are divided into small groups of four or fewer with an adult who listens, answers questions about the lesson, and helps with worksheets. Food items will be created to treat attendees to a “Drive Across America” theme, with special appetizers, dinner, and dessert on the menu. This year, a concession stand will be included at the venue. “People can be out moving around this year,” said Dahl, who noted that those who wish to remain in their car will have food delivered to them. “You can mingle if you feel comfortable,” she remarked. “It’s your choice.” During the meal, there will be opportunities to bid on silent auction items in an online format that will be open to the entire community. “The silent auction will open Wednesday, Aug. 25, and people who are not attending (the drive-in event) can participate,” explained Dahl. The silent auction will end at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 28. A live auction for guests only will be held at the end of the drivein event. Auction items that have been gathered include a certificate for a painting party and gift cards to the Corner Coffee

Rite Aid To Help Children’s Hospitals Rite Aid’s annual in-store customer fundraising campaign benefiting Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals will run through Saturday Aug. 28. All funds donated by customers will benefit 53 children’s hospitals providing lifesaving care and services for children in Rite Aid communities. This marks the 27th year for Rite Aid’s annual campaign, with customer support helping the company and its public charity, The Rite Aid Foundation, to raise and donate more than $100 million overall to CMN Hospitals. During this year’s campaign, customers can donate during every in-store transaction at Rite Aid. In addition to patient services, charitable care and equipment, donations help pioneer research that transforms how hospitals care for children not just in their youth, but throughout their lives. All donations made during Rite Aid’s campaign will stay local, supporting the children’s hospitals in customers’ communities. To learn more about CMN Hospitals, visit www.cmnhospitals.org.
