Students Travel To Germany By Ann Mead Ash
On June 15, a group of Garden Spot High School (GSHS) students and two teachers, German instructor Laura Trimble and physics teacher Eller Mann, who is a native of Germany, left for a 15day trip in the Rhineland. The trip was the brainchild of Trimble and Mann, who is originally from Worms, and this is the second such trip GSHS students have taken to Germany. The teachers made a connection with Rudi-Stephan-Gymnasium, a college preparatory secondary school for students in grades five through 13, which specializes in languages. During the first

The group toured two castles of King Ludwig II - Herrenchiemsee Palace and Neuschwanstein Castle - and in Salzbergwerk Berchtesgaden visited a salt mine that has been in operation since the 1500s. The Dachau Concentration Camp in Upper Bavaria was also on the travel agenda. “We had a tour of the former camp, where students learned a lot about history of World War II and the Holocaust,” said Trimble, who called the experience “sobering.” A favorite activity for the students was riding the Sommerrodelbahn. Trimble described the apparatus as “a summer Alpine slide with magnificent views of the Alps.” “The track is metal, and each student rides in a car with a shift for braking and accelerating,” she explained. “It was something different (that the students) had never done before.” “We ended in Munich, which is Germany’s third-largest city,” said Trimble. “The last thing we did was take a bicycle tour, and (the students) got to experience

Rudi-Stephan-Gymnasium. GSHS students were paired with students who attend RudiStephan-Gymnasium. In addition to attending school during that first week of the trip, the group took a field trip to the Rhine River, enjoying a river cruise and seeing sights along the way. They also traveled to Heidelberg. “The rest of the time (was spent with) a (host) family seeing what German families are like and how are things different or the same (from life in the United States),” said Trimble. “They each had their own unique experience that way.” During the second week of the trip, students visited a number of historic and interesting sites in southern Germany and Austria. Trimble noted that the group visited the Zugspitze, which is the highest Alpine peak in Germany. “ We took a new cable car (almost) 10,000 feet in the air to the peak,” said Trimble. “(Builders) broke three world records building this cable car.” In Innsbruck, Austria, students visited Swarovski Crystal Worlds and saw a Tyrolean show

Archery Shoot from pg 1 prizes. The price will be discounted for those under age 16. A separate price will be offered for those who take part in the bonus shoot. Organizers noted that any style of bow may be used on the course and that families are encouraged to take part in the event together. This year’s course will consist of 30 targets depicting North American wildlife, including a turkey and a bobcat. Organizers noted that about half the targets are deer. The course will be open from 7 to 10 a.m., after which a hot brunch will be served. The speaker during brunch will be Ryan Burkholder, youth pastor with Ephrata Church of the Brethren, who will give a short meditation on a huntingrelated topic. The course will reopen from 11 a.m. to noon to conclude the morning shoot. As in years past, the shoot will feature door prizes consisting of hunting- and outdoor-related items. Vendors that specialize in outdoor sporting equipment, including a vendor that makes hunting films, will also have displays on-site. The shoot raises funds to help defray the general operating costs of Woodcrest Retreat and to subsidize fees for campers who need assistance to afford camp. “We need to raise $85,000 each year to cover our camp budget,” explained Woodcrest director Cliff Martin, who added that proceeds from the shoot will be added to funds raised by the annual auction and golf tournaments in hopes of reaching that goal. Woodcrest, which is located on a 110-acre wooded hillside in northeastern Lancaster County, provides camping experiences in a variety of settings, including day, resident, and adventure camps, along with a Conquerors special needs camp. More than 1,400 youngsters attended camp at Woodcrest this year. Those who wish to take part in the 3-D Archery Shoot are encouraged to register by Monday, Aug. 19, by calling 717-7382233 or visiting www.Woodcrest Retreat.org/Events/Benefit-3D -Archery-Shoot.

they give the books to (the Friends) and we go through them and decide which ones to donate,” Fritsky explained. She said that books are provided to the Honey Brook Food Pantry as part of a partnership between the two organizations. “The library has a basket, and people put food staples in there that (someone from the pantry) comes and picks up. We put books in there (as well),” Fritsky noted. Fritsky credited members of the reading community who donate enough books to make the programs possible. “It is a good thing because we don’t pay anything for the books coming in and we’re always looking for opportunities to be of service,” she said. “Books are going all over the place. Children’s books go fast, because children love their books. They read them and re-read them.” Despite technological developments, Fritsky added that people still enjoy reading actual books. “Even with (e-readers) and the internet, people are still buying books and reading them,” she said. In addition to distributing books and holding seasonal book sales, the Friends maintain the library’s Janice Shultz Book Boutique, which is open during library hours. The boutique, which offers used books for sale, is named for former Friends president Jan Shultz. The Honey Brook Community Library is located at 687 Compass Road (Route 10), Honey Brook. The Friends of the Honey Brook Community Library have made it their mission to ensure that books are accessible to readers of all ages by placing free library boxes in the community and providing books to hospital patients, senior citizens and people in need. According to Mary Ann Fritsky, president of the group, the Friends have placed a Free Sharing Library Box at Historic Poole Forge, 1940 Main St. (Route 23), Narvon. The Friends have also placed a bookshelf at the laundromat located at Eby’s General Store, 3801 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook. At both locations, people may borrow a book to enjoy and then return it, or they make keep the book as their own. “They can take the books; they don’t have to bring them back,” Fritsky said. “We provide children’s books, teenager books and books for adults.” Fritsky noted that, sadly, two other Free Sharing Library Boxes were vandalized, including the one located on Pequea Avenue in Honey Brook Borough, as well as the one located on the Born
Learning Trail in the James A. Umble Memorial Park in Honey Brook Township. “Unfortunately, we have had to temporarily suspend stocking books at the two locations due to continued vandalism,” she stated. “We will need to discuss our options.” Fritsky added that the Friends also provide books to patients at Brandywine Hospital in Coatesville and to clients of the Honey Brook Food Pantry. Fritsky learned about the need for additional books for patients at Brandywine Hospital, where she volunteers weekly in the hospital’s surgical waiting room. “When I volunteer, I bring books there,” she explained. “(Volunteers) go around with a little cart with books and magazines, and they bring them into the patients’ rooms.” Additional books, including large print books, are given to the Brandywine Hospital Senior Group. The books are distributed during the group’s monthly birthday parties. The provided books come from community donations, as well as titles that are gleaned from the library’s collection. “When they clear the shelves periodically,

Tournament from pg 1 HOPE International Schedules Annual Golf Outing By Ann Mead Ash
Tucked away in an office building in the heart of Lancaster County is a nonprofit organization that seeks to alleviate poverty in all its forms, including spiritual, material, social, and personal. Working toward that end, in 22 years, the organization has loaned out $1.3 billion to 950,000 clients in 16 countries. While those figures are impressive, Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, prefers to talk about the people the organization has helped. “It’s not about the numbers, it’s about guys like Nico,” said Rutt, referring to a rice farmer Rutt met in the Philippines during late 2018 and early 2019. Nico, who lives on the island of Tacloban, has a dream of sending his sons to college. When his fishing business was wiped out in a 2013 typhoon that hit Tacloban and killed 7,000, Nico learned how to grow rice. “(Nico) got involved in a HOPE International savings group there, (participating in a) welcome, worship, Word, work, and wrap up group program,” explained Rutt. “He is just thriving.” Rutt asked Nico if he had advice for other farmers. “He said three things: ‘Trust God, work hard, and save,’” recalled Rutt. Rutt is offering area residents and businesses a chance to help more people like Nico by sponsoring and registering to attend the organization’s 19th annual golf tournament at Heritage Hills Golf Resort, 2700 Mount Rose Ave., York, on Friday, Sept. 13. Round one of the four-person scramble-
format tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. Round two will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Morning golfers will receive a continental breakfast and attend the awards luncheon, and afternoon participants will receive a boxed lunch and attend the awards dinner. According to Brian Boycan, regional representative with HOPE, the tournament can comfortably accommodate a total of 230 golfers. Boycan explained that HOPE will reach even more countries by entering a partnership with Compassion International to train representatives in savings group programs. This year, HOPE will train Compassion staff members in Rwanda, Thailand, Kenya, Indonesia, and Tanzania. “We want to make a big difference. We want to collaborate for the kingdom,” explained Boycan. Rutt noted that it is important to train those who are indigenous to an area to oversee savings groups. He shared the story of Rosalie, a woman in the Philippines who was asked by a HOPE representative about her dreams. “She said she would love a house, but it is too big a dream,” relayed Rutt. “The indigenous leader, Florine, talked to her about big dreams and small steps toward them.” Rutt explained that the leader can relate to those in the groups in a realistic way. “(Rosalie’s) group leader can say, ‘I grew up here, and I know what you’re going through,’” explained Rutt. Boycan noted that it is the design of the savings groups to give people a way to lift themselves from poverty. “The microfinancing and savings groups restore dignity and help break the
cycle of poverty,” said Boycan. “People feel terrible when they are unable to take care of their families, (but) you see their dignity restored when they realize, ‘I am capable. God has given me the gifts that I need, and I can (take care of my family).’” Last year, HOPE exceeded its goal of raising $350,000 from the tournament. Much of the money raised by the tournament is donated in the form of sponsorships. A variety of sponsorship levels are available to businesses. On Aug. 1, Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley kicked off Trips That Transform, a monthlong celebration of the approximately 12,000 wishes for children battling critical illnesses in the U.S. and its territories each year that involve travel and the donors that make them possible. Among these wishes was 18-year-old Maya’s wish to go to the Kentucky Derby. The family spent the week attending the big race, touring Churchill Downs and spending quality time with each other. With 75 percent of wishes requiring air travel, Make-AWish needs more than 3 billion airline miles and points to fulfill travel wishes for children battling critical illnesses each year. Members of the public are invited to contribute their unused airline miles, expiring travel points and money. Once donated to Make-AWish, airline miles and points never expire, and each goes on to help Wish Kids and their families take flight to destinations around the world. Travelers can donate airline miles and points

Shoe Drive Benefits Social Enterprise Program
GSHS Marchers from pg 1
Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage offices throughout central Pennsylvania recently collected a total of 2,327 pairs of new and gently used shoes for Soles4Souls. Soles4Souls is a nonprofit social enterprise that aims to create sustainable jobs and provide relief through the distribution of shoes and clothing around the world. This was Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage’s first shoe collection for the nonprofit. The offices with the largest collections include Harrisburg, 498 pairs; York, 285 pairs; Lancaster, 270 pairs; Kutztown and Wyomissing, 240 pairs; and Carlisle, 236 pairs. The offices in Camp Hill, Chambersburg, Dillsburg, Greencastle, Hershey, Lebanon, New Bloomfield and Waynesboro also contributed to the success of the shoe collection.
homage to the Invasion with a 12-minute drill that will feature Elton John’s “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting,” followed by two Queen songs, “Bicycle Race” and the classic “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The show will close with the Beatles’ “Hey Jude” and “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” While the music is familiar, it will present challenges, according to band members. “Bohemian Rhapsody” alone is six minutes in length. “Each section is iconic. You can’t cut any of it,” said band member Mason Casey. Musicians will also need to master tempos that run both fast and slow. Danielle Field stated that the flute section will play a lot of “runs,” meaning a number of quick notes. “We must get the music perfect because everyone (in the audience) knows it,” she said. While audiences are singing along to the music, they will be watching band members forming large shapes, climbing on boxes for solos, singing, and even dancing as part of the drill. According to color guard member Cassidy
Staff members at the Wyomissing office of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage displayed some of the shoes they collected for Soles4Souls. The shoe drive yielded a total of 2,327 pairs of new and gently used shoes collected throughout central Pennsylvania. Shoes donated to the Soles4Souls micro-enterprise program offer the opportunity for people all over the world to create small businesses selling shoes and clothing. This is a sustainable way for those without a
traditional job or training to lift themselves and their families out of poverty. For more information about Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, readers may visit www.ColdwellBankerHomes.com.

Hoover, her section will ride tricycles during “Bicycle Race,” and bicycle bells will be used at the end of the song. “In ‘Hey Jude,’ we will sing the ‘na, na, na’ chorus,” said band member Yoshi Allen. Sauder added that the band will continue to play the final Beatles tune as the members march off the field at the end of the show. Students who will play solos in the drill include Allen on trumpet in “Bohemian Rhapsody” and Aaron Good on trombone in “Hey Jude.” In addition, the drumline will be in the spotlight during the Elton John number, and the pit percussion will be featured on “Bicycle Race.” During band camp, which was held from July 29 to Aug. 2, the band met at the high school each morning from 8 a.m. to noon and each evening at the school stadium from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Traditionally, the section leaders organize theme nights for the evening practice and students dress according-
ly. This year, Monday evening had a USA theme, and Tuesday costumes focused on a “What do you want to be when you grow up?” theme. On Wednesday, section night was held, and students were encouraged to wear mismatched clothing on Thursday. On Friday evening, the 130 band members presented the show to their parents on the school football field. The GSHS marching band has long been known for the creative salute its drum majors perform prior to the show. Hicks noted that this year the trio hopes to do something different and fun. Sauder said the plan is to make the salute “unique.” One of the goals of band camp is to develop unity among the members. GSHS marcher Jo Holmes said that during camp the group becomes a type of band family. “It brings us all together,” said Fox. Allen added that the wellknown selection of drill tunes is a factor this year, and Fox agreed. “We had the music on in the band room and everyone was singing it, and it was so much fun,” she said.

Over three days in September, Almanzar and Oree, along with volunteers from the community, installed 20 portraits and 25 responses on the wall of the Water Street Mission. All participants were invited to help install the mural. Volunteers were provided lunch during each day of installation and were gifted a free print of their portrait as a thank-you. The Ephrata Performing Arts Center (EPAC) has announced open call auditions for its 2019 Fall Young Artist Cabaret, “We Got the Beat,” featuring songs from rock musicals. Auditions will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 20, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the lower level at EPAC’s Sharadin Bigler Theatre, 320 Cocalico St., Ephrata. Each performer is asked to prepare an audition piece that is either an up-tempo song or ballad in the style of rock standard no more than 32 bars in length. It does not necessarily need to be from a Broadway show. No monologue is required for the audition. The song selection should best represent who the performer is and should highlight their vocal abilities. A piano accompanist and CD player will be provided, so auditioners should bring sheet music or a CD. Auditioners should also bring a list of any schedule conflicts with them on the day of the audition. Auditions are open to young performers ages 10 to 18. Dancers from all styles are welcome to audition. Registration is preferred, but walk-ins will be welcome. To register, readers may visit www.ephrataperformingarts center.com. Those auditioning will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis. “We Got the Beat” Young Artist Cabaret will take place on Friday, Sept. 20, and Saturday, Sept. 21, at 7:30 p.m. For more details, readers may contact Irving at kids4kids@ephrataperforming artscenter.com.

Lancaster Symphony, has chosen to focus his continuing efforts on the Endless Mountain Music Festival. Gunzenhauser presented the international festival’s inaugural season in August 2006, when seven concerts were presented in eight days. In 2007, the festival expanded to give 15 concerts in 17 days. The festival continues to expand and offer events at venues in both Pennsylvania and New York. The orchestra’s current concertmaster is Hua Jin from the Indianapolis Symphony. Gunzenhauser is the fifth most-recorded American conductor. He has completed 72 compact discs including works by a host of major composers, such as Beethoven, Vivaldi, Mozart, Dvorák, and Copland. His recording of Benjamin Lees’ Symphonies Nos. 2, 3, and 5 with the State Philharmonic of Rheinland-Pfalz was nominated for a Grammy in 2003. In 2008, Gunzenhauser was conductor of a new virtuoso chamber orchestra called Pro Musicis, which recorded Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” with Harrisburg Symphony concertmaster Odin Rathnam. In past seasons, the maestro conducted at the Teatro Colón with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra and with the Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra of Colombia, South America. Other activities included a full-scale production of Puccini’s “Tosca” at the Wittgenstein Theater near Dresden, Germany. In August 2005, he performed at a Hungarian Music Festival sponsored by the Franz Liszt Chamber
Orchestra as well as with the Danubius Orchestra at the Franz Liszt Academy of Budapest in the première of the Mazetti completion of Mahler’s Tenth Symphony. The program was broadcast throughout Europe. Gunzenhauser has also conducted the National Orchestra of Argentina, the Belgrade Philharmonic in Serbia, and the Arpeggione Chamber Orchestra of Austria, as well as the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, with which he conducted the Mayor’s Concert on the day after Christmas for five years. He was the American judge at an International Conducting Competition in Lisbon, Portugal, in 2001, and he has been an international judge and conductor at competitions in Sicily and Kazakhstan. A native of New York City and a graduate of the High School of Music and Art in New York City, Gunzenhauser received a Bachelor of Music from Oberlin College and a Master of Music from the New England Conservatory. He also holds an honorary doctorate from Widener University. He has been awarded three Fulbright grants and has an Artist’s Diploma from the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. He was awarded Delaware’s First Cultural Ambassador designation in 1990 and is the recipient of the University of Delaware’s Medal of Distinction. He was also awarded the Order of the First State, the highest acknowledgement that a civilian may receive from the State of Delaware.
