GSHS Marchers Will Pay Homage To The ’80s By Ann Mead Ash

Big hair, leg warmers, and the Rubik’s Cube are all reminiscent of the 1980s. With the arrival of MTV (Music Television) early in the decade, popular musicians streamed their music into living rooms all over America 24/7.

Members of the Garden Spot High School (GSHS) marching band were not born until after the turn of the century, but they are not too young to appreciate the music of the ’80s. Josh Hicks, who serves as one of the band’s drum majors, said that the show will feature “We Got the Beat by The

Go-Go’s, “Talking in Your Sleep by The Romantics, “Open Arms by Journey, “Funkytown by Lipps Inc., and finish up with “Africa by Toto. The up to 10minute show will showcase GSHS marchers moving and playing with no breaks between songs. The drill will include a number of See GSHS Marchers pg 4

You are making a difference. CrossNet’s third Garden Gala is slated for Saturday, See CrossNet pg 9

When the organization broke ground for the 45-unit building, which will offer 11 different floor plans, on July 23, president/CEO Jerry Lile shared how Fairmount has been paying attention to the needs of potential residents. “Over the past two years, we heard from those on our waiting list that we should create more independent units because of growing demand in our market, he said. “We have listened, and after numerous planning See Fairmount pg 10

More than 20 years ago, a group of Christian men began taking a golf excursion that involved Bible study. Dubbed Bibles and Bogeys, the yearly event led to six attendees forming a weekly Bible study group that meets at a local restaurant early each Friday morning. About two years ago, group member Tom Despard turned to fellow member Neil McCauley and asked if he would like to help organize a benefit golf tournament. “I said, ‘Are you crazy?’ recalled McCauley, pointing to the plethora of golf tournaments held in the area. However, McCauley soon changed his mind about the effort. “Tom told me about Safe Families for Children (a ministry of Bethany Christian Services (BCS)), and I said, ‘I am in,’ shared McCauley. The resulting golf tournament, named the Bethany Charity Golf Classic, will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Foxchase Golf

GSHS drum majors have long included an original salute prior to the start of each drill. This year, Courtney Zwally and Jordan Tennis will join Hicks in a distinctively ’80s salute. “We will incorporate some ’80s dance moves, disco, or robot-style (dance), said Tennis. “We are doing five charts this year, when we only usually do three, explained percussion section leader Jasmine Arment.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m. A shotgun start will be held at 12:30 p.m., and the awards presentation dinner, which will feature crab cakes and chicken, will start at 5:30 p.m. The competition can accommodate 144 golfers. Despard is well-acquainted with the work of BCS, having been involved with the ministry in a number of volunteer positions for 30 years, including serving as past national board chair. He noted that BCS chapters nationwide hold golf tournaments to raise funds. When Despard told members of the Bible study group about Safe Families for Children, they became dedicated to the cause. Safe Families is a ministry that helps parents experiencing a crisis by providing a Christian host family to care for their children until they can be reunited. The program has been shown to be much less costly than utilizing the foster care system, and in most cases, the children are returned to their family. Mark Unger, BCS regional director, said that BCS offers two programs to help children in crisis in Lancaster County. “One is a prevention program to prevent children from having to go into foster care, and the other is Safe Families, said Unger. McCauley noted that he and other members of the Bible study, including Dixon Miller, Allen Lafferty, Rob Lukowski, and Will Charles, are committed to the cause of Safe Families. “It’s about keeping the families together, he said. “We all know families can get into crisis, (and Safe Families) gives the parents or grandparents a timeout. The goal of the golf tournament is to raise $70,000 to cover a funding cut gap that BCS recently suffered. “Safe Families does not produce revenue, explained Unger. “It is fully funded by donations and grants. To make the golf tournament stand out, members of the group have worked to

Color guard captain Ashley Antkowiak said that large boxes will be placed on the field prior to the show. “(The boxes) have steps in the back, and the color guard or band member can walk up on top of them to dance or play music, she explained. “That will add a huge visual element to the show. Percussion section leader Molly Brennan noted that trumpeter Nate Smith will play an elaborate trumpet solo from atop one of the boxes at the beginning of “Open Arms. The same song will feature Antkowiak in a dance solo followed by a swing solo. Monday evening vacation night, inviting students to dress in the clothing they would wear on vacation. Tuesday was costume play night, which gave students the option to use their creativity in an original outfit. Wednesday was meme and Vine night, and Thursday was section night, allowing sections to pick a theme and dress accordingly. Looking ahead to the fall, the band will take part in exhibition shows at Ephrata and Lancaster Catholic high schools. Percussion section leader Brent Miller noted that all middle school band students may join the high school band at a specified home game. GSHS band members are excited at the prospect of having the 80 middle-schoolers march into the stadium and play music with them in the stands.

Adding two extra songs to the lineup has been challenging for the group, but the leaders were not daunted. To master the extended show, students met from 8 a.m. to noon and 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. each day from July 30 to Aug 3. Drum majors and section leaders were excited when the band completed two charts of the drill on the first day of camp. Traditionally, the show is ready to present to parents on the school football field during the final rehearsal on the Friday evening of camp. Another GSHS band camp tradition is holding theme nights each evening of camp. This year, according to Zwally, the drum majors decided to make the themes more original. “We didn’t want to do pajama night or superhero night, said Zwally. Instead, the trio opted to make

Sept. 15, at 6:30 p.m. in the Legacy Gardens at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. The evening will include tapas-style food at a number of stations located throughout the garden. Attendees will be able to visit the stations, which will lead to a large tent where beverages and desserts will be found. “There will be a lot of yummy food to fill people up,” noted Dahl. The menu for the gala was chosen by event coordinator Allison Cuthie from a selection offered by Garden Spot Village in partnership with another food provider. The 2018 menu will include assorted canapés, a charcutier station, and stations featuring Brazilian, Asian, and Italian foods. Beverages will include sparkling soda and infused water, along with mock cocktails. Brewed and cold infused coffees will also be served. The dessert display will feature assorted mini sweet shots and petit fours, along with Japanese steamed cakes. “It will be delicious,” said Dahl. “We (have received) so many compliments on the food (from past gala attendees).” Organizers have also arranged for attendees to enjoy live music under the stars. Dahl explained that organizers like to say the recommended dress for the evening is “date-night attire.” “It’s a gala, but it’s not fullon formal,” she said. “(How to dress for the event) can be confusing, so we say date night,” she added. “You can dress up, but you don’t have to go all out.” A local photographer will be on-site to take free photos for

locations on Franklin Street in New Holland. Dahl noted that the gala is distinctly different from the ministry’s other two major fundraisers, which include the Extraordinary Give and the organization’s annual banquet. “The gala is different,” she stated. “It’s (all about having) fun. If you’re looking for a fun night to support CrossNet, this is an event you won’t want to miss.” Funds raised by the gala are derived from ticket sales and sponsorships. Garden Gala organizers hope to raise $50,000 for the ministry’s general fund. The gala will be held rain or shine. Tickets are limited for the alcohol-free event. For tickets and details, readers may call 717-355-2454 or visit www.elancocross.org.

According to Dahl, the gala offers guests a relaxing evening in a beautiful setting. “There is no formal program,” explained Dahl, who said she plans only to give a short speech of appreciation at the event. “This is a time to just come and eat and relax and hang out with friends. www.newhollandreuzit.org Your Purchase Supports the Works of the MCC and Many Local Charities DJ Risk (left) and Jerry Lile broke ground for the new 45-unit Fairmount Wheat Ridge Apartments on July 23. The new building will offer prospective residents 11 different floor plans when it is completed. lives of those we serve,” he said, adding, “We came to this point through faith … that the Lord Jesus Christ is guiding us. I see His hand has been in this for 50 years, and I believe in the next 50 He will be with us (as well).” DJ Risk of Paul Risk Construction, which will handle the building of the new facility, thanked the Fairmount team. He noted that in addition to the 45 apartments, a second project will involve renovating the organization’s personal care facility in multiple phases. Before introducing Fairmount chaplain Paul Gehman, who offered the prayer of dedication, Lile noted that the administration and board of Fairmount esteems the practice of prayer. “We recognize value of prayer and that all things should be brought before the Lord,” said Lile. “We ask Him to be present during the project. We pray this project will bring

honor and glory to Him.” Gehman thanked the Lord for the work that has been done in planning the expansion. “Before we even start to turn the sod, we believe Your blessing has been evident,” he prayed. He asked for safety and blessings upon those who will perform the construction work, adding that the success of the project is dedicated to the Lord. “After the last nail has been driven and the last brick laid … (let us) with grateful hearts and minds give God the glory,” he said. Fairmount Homes is located on more than 50 acres and includes two adjoining campuses presently offering more than 100 health care beds, 74 personal care beds, 12 residential suites, 58 apartments, and 52 cottages. The organization is governed by a nine-member board of directors. More information about the organization may be found at www.fairmounthomes.org.

50-year-old mission. “Fairmount is not about buildings or about being big,” he said. “It’s about caring for people with compassion.” Burkholder went on to discuss the organization’s stance that each individual is specially created by God, noting that Fairmount provides care in accordance with that definition. He noted that the new building will enhance the organization’s mission in several ways. “As people live longer, we want to make it so couples can stay together as long as possible,” said Burkholder, who noted that some of the goals are making apartments affordable and utilizing floor plans that allow for residents to be cared for in their own apartments. “Fairmount’s mission is founded in Christ’s love and Mennonite values. Lile added that he feels blessed to work with supportive staff and board members and thanked them for their dedication and service. He also thanked the construction company, developers, bank representatives, and others that helped make the groundbreaking possible. Ken Burkholder, chair of Fairmount’s board of directors, spoke about how the new building fits into Fairmount’s

The Lititz American Legion Riders from Post 56 will hold their 13th annual VA Hospice Ride on Sunday, Aug. 19. Registration will start at 10 a.m., and the ride will begin at noon. The scenic, guided ride will start at the Lititz American Legion on Broad Street; travel to New Holland American Legion, Morgantown American Legion, and Richland American Legion; and end back at Lititz American Legion, where refreshments will be available. Separate fees have been set for riders and for passengers. The ride will be held in memory of David Little, a life member of the Lititz American Legion and the service officer before he passed away earlier this year. Little was a chief warrant officer, retiring from the U.S. Army after 24 years of service. A decorated veteran, he served two tours in Vietnam, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross, two Purple Hearts, the Combat Infantry Badge, and other honors. As a helicopter pilot in Vietnam, Little was shot down twice while spraying Agent Orange, intensifying his exposure to the chemical. Little required 114 blood transfusions in one year. He was admitted to the hospice unit of the Lebanon VA Hospital in February 2018 and died on March 9. In addition to the Lititz American Legion, Little had also been a member of the Columbia American Legion, the Manheim VFW Post 5956, and the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Chapter 107. A 32nd-degree Mason, Little was a member of the Robert Burns Lodge 464 in Harrisburg; the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Harrisburg; and the Harrisburg Consistory. He held degrees in both electrical and mechanical engineering, and he was an inventor, receiving patents for several of his inventions. For more information, readers may call Scott at 717572-5979.

Archery Shoot from pg 1 from 7 a.m. until noon. A bonus shoot will be held from noon to 3 p.m. There is a fee to take part in the morning shoot, which includes brunch, a speaker, and opportunities to win door prizes. The price will be discounted for those under age 16. A separate price will be offered for those who take part in the bonus shoot. The shoot will consist of a 30-target course featuring North American wildlife 3-D targets, including turkey and a bobcat. Organizers noted that about half the targets are deer. The course will be open from 7 to 10 a.m., when a hot brunch will be served. The speaker during brunch will be Frank Rice, pastor at Ephrata Grace Fellowship Church, who will give a short meditation on a hunting-related topic. The course will reopen from 11 a.m. to noon to conclude the morning shoot. As in years past, the shoot will feature door prizes consisting of hunting- and outdoor-related items. Vendors that specialize in outdoor sporting equipment, including a vendor that makes hunting films, will also have displays on-site. The shoot raises funds to help defray the general operating costs of Woodcrest Retreat and to subsidize fees for campers who need assistance to afford camp. “We need to raise $100,000 each year to cover our camp budget,” explained Woodcrest director Cliff Martin, who added that proceeds from the shoot will be added to funds raised by the annual auction and golf tournaments in hopes of reaching that goal. Woodcrest, which is located on a 110-acre wooded hillside in northeastern Lancaster County, provides camping experiences in a variety of settings, including day, resident, and adventure camps, along with a Conquerors special needs camp. More than 1,400 youngsters attended camp at Woodcrest this year. Organizers noted that any style of bow may be used on the course and that families are encouraged to take part in the event together. “I have been impressed by how many people brought their sons and daughters,” noted Martin. Those who wish to take part in the hunt are encouraged to register by Monday, Aug. 20, by calling 717-738-2233 or visiting www.Woodcrest Retreat.org/Events/Benefit -3D-Archery-Shoot.

Coalition To Hold Women’s Luncheon The Lancaster Interfaith Coalition, an organization that brings together people from all faiths, in conjunction with Church of the Apostles, United Church of Christ (UCC), will host a women’s interfaith luncheon on Sunday, Aug. 26, from 1 to 3 p.m. All women and their children are welcome to attend. The event will be held in Rader Park on the Church of the Apostles UCC campus, 1899 Apostle Way, Lancaster, in the pavilion. The luncheon’s purpose is to celebrate what women of all traditions and backgrounds have in common and what is unique about each of them. All attendees are encouraged to prepare a dish reflecting their tradition and background and bring the dish to share with the group. The Coalition requests that shared dishes made with milk products or meat be identified and that dishes not include pork or shellfish, if possible. Donations for the Domestic Violence Shelter (DVS) in Lancaster will be accepted. The shelter provides 24-hour emergency support for domestic violence victims and their children who are forced to leave their homes for safety reasons. The shelter’s needs currently include women’s underwear, slippers, pajamas, socks, and sweats, along with personal care items, such as shampoo, hair conditioner, deodorant, body wash, lotion, and hair spray. The children’s program’s needs include children’s underwear, socks, pajamas, diapers, pacifiers, multicultural toys and dolls, and stuffed animals. Gift cards to book stores, clothing stores, other stores, and fast food restaurants are also welcome. Reservations are requested. To make reservations, readers may contact Church of the Apostles UCC at 717-392-5718 or webmaster@apostlesucc.org. There is no cost to attend the luncheon.

PA Child Abuse Hotline Posted All schools in Pennsylvania will be required to publicly display a poster containing the statewide toll-free number for reporting suspected child abuse, beginning in the 2018-19 school year. Known as ChildLine, the toll-free hotline number to report suspected child abuse in Pennsylvania is 800-932-0313. Posting this critical information in schools will let students know they have somewhere to turn if they need to report abuse or neglect that they have suffered or if they suspect another child is being abused or neglected. The poster is required to be displayed in a high-traffic, public area widely used by students. The poster also would include the address of the Department of Human Services’ website that provides information and resources related to child protection. For more information, readers may visit www.keepkidssafe.pa.gov.
