Billboard Competition Has Goal Of Saving Lives By Ann Mead Ash

When Natalie Littlehale, community outreach officer with the Manheim Township Police Department, spoke at the unveiling of the winning design for the No Excuses Youth Traffic Safety Billboard Design Contest sponsored by a Community Safety Grant from State Farm, she made sure her voice was loud enough to be heard over the nearby Route 222 North traffic. Looking at winning student designer and Manheim Township High School (MTHS) graduate Lillian Mitchell, Littlehale said, “Distracted driving is the most common cause of crashes that I see on a daily basis. Your billboard …

will … cause people to think. Your billboard will save lives.” On July 22 at 10 a.m. a group including Mitchell’s family, her graphic design teacher Jim Ertzgard, Center for Traffic Safety representative Tracy Linn, and others gathered in sight of the billboard, near the intersection of Stone Hill and Muddy Creek roads in Ephrata, for a brief ceremony. The event lauded Mitchell and her design partner, Brandon Yoeun, who could not attend, and focused on the importance of preventing distracted driving crashes. Mitchell’s billboard features a drawing of a cellphone with a cracked screen overlapping a tire track. To the left of the graphics are the words “Put It See Billboard Competition pg 9

Contest Invites Sewists To “Make It With Wool” By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The majority of the bolts in a typical fabric store will be filled with natural fibers like cotton or manufactured fibers like polyester. However, there is usually at least one section dedicated to wool, and garments made from those fabrics are the focus of the annual Make It With Wool contest sponsored by the Pennsylvania Sheep and Wool Growers Association. The contest is designed to promote the beauty and versatility of wool fabrics and yarns. “Wool is a wonderful fiber to work with,” said director Linda Siegel of Lebanon. “You can steam and mold it into shape.” She noted that wool fabric is not always derived from sheep’s wool, and it can be used for See Contest pg 6

Gifts That Give Hope Fair Moves Online Hiking In Green A year ago, Jenn Knepper, founder of the Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Lancaster Alternative Gift Fair, was looking forward to moving the fair from its location at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster to The Junction Center in Manheim. This year, Knepper is talking about the online fair that the organization will hold on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. During that time period, those wishing to give an alternative gift may visit www.giftsthatgivehope.org and choose an organization to donate to. “You’re purchasing a gift for somebody, and we will send you a card with a description of the gift you purchased,” said Knepper, who added that the fair is the perfect vehicle to find a meaningful gift, especially for those who do

not need anything in particular. Knepper suspects that recent occurrences may have changed perspectives on meaningful gifts. “I think through this (pandemic) people may have realized that stuff really isn’t important, other than basic necessities,” she said. “(Instead of) all the stuff we might have thought was necessary, we can refocus on what’s important.” COVID-19 and the resulting restrictions also See Gifts That Give Hope pg 2

Annette Roland of Music for Everyone (left) and Grace Julian of The Edible Classroom manned their tables at the 2019 Gifts That Give Hope Fair. The 2020 fair will be held as a virtual event on Dec. 5.

Outdoor exercise is encouraged during COVID-19 restrictions as a way to stay healthy and positive and maybe even increase defenses against disease. Benefits of exercise may include lower cholesterol and blood pressure, while improving strength, balance, and coordination. Social distancing is usually easier when exercising outside, as well. See Hiking pg 11

The White Cliffs of Conoy in Marietta (right photo) and Shenk’s Ferry Wildflower Preserve (left photo) are both part of scenic hiking trails located in Lancaster County. Kristen Holloway, founder of the Facebook page Day Hikes of Lancaster County PA, combines her love of hiking and photography to share information about the trails with others.

GOTR Season Announced Girls on the Run (GOTR) is accepting registrations for the upcoming GOTR and Heart and Sole season, which will begin on Monday, Sept. 21. At GOTR, social-emotional learning is the cornerstone of the award-winning, research-based lessons for girls in third through eighth grades. GOTR supports girls in identifying and processing their emotions. The GOTR programming seeks to empower girls to nurture their physical and emotional health, find strength in their connectedness, and build confidence and resiliency. Following current COVID-19 guidelines, GOTR-trained coaches and dedicated staff are ready to adapt program delivery as the school year approaches. GOTR has made several modifications to the program to ensure the health and safety of coaches and participants. In the event of unexpected or planned closures, GOTR will shift in-person programming to virtual practices. Coaches will be provided with specific resources, training, and support to prepare them to seamlessly deliver the program virtually. The virtual program will engage and connect socially and emotionally and will provide physical activity as well. As guidelines allow, GOTR will also plan to meet safely in small groups as it connects at alternate sites such as parks, community centers, churches, and schools. Additional modifications that have been made to the GOTR and Heart and Sole program delivery include reduced team size for safer gathering; reduced duration from 10 weeks to eight weeks to accommodate a later start date; flexibility in times and days of practices; a flexible season start date; and modifications to adhere to social distance guidelines and minimize exposure. Each girl will receive her own bag to hold her individual materials for the season. GOTR coaches will receive updated training and additional modules that include social inclusion, COVID-19 safety, and trauma informed coaching. The season culminating 5K will take place mid-November through smaller site-based events and virtually. For more information and to register, readers may visit www.gotrlancaster.org.

more than heavy winter coats. “I enjoy finding lightweight wools I can wear yearround,” Linda said. “I made a light wool crepe black dress that I can wear with sandals in the summer and feel comfortable.” Linda entered the Make It With Wool contest for the first time as a 4-H member in 1972. She still has the suit made from fabric striped with acid blue, teal green, and cream. “There was a lot of competition,” she recalled. “A lot of people were sewing in the ’70s.” Home sewing has declined in popularity since then, but it is seeing a resurgence. Linda has been actively promoting sewing by serving as a 4-H leader for the past two decades. Additionally, she has encouraged the sewing passion of her daughter, Rachel. In about 2002 at age 13, Rachel won the state 4-H fashion revue with a Melton wool coat and subtly striped pants and then won the state Make It With Wool contest with the same outfit. That made Rachel eligible to compete at the national Make It With Wool event. “She didn’t place there, but she learned,” Linda said. “From then on, she sewed with wool in 4-H and challenged herself.” Before she turned 25 and matriculated into the adult age division, Rachel competed at the national event seven times. As an adult, she has had one outfit win and two others place. “Rachel got to see a lot of the country that way,” Linda said. “Sometimes she knew who the judges were, like the year she was in the elevator with (television sewing instructor) Sandra Betzina and (couture sewing expert) Claire Shaeffer was a judge.” At least six of Linda’s 4-H students have competed nationally, and she has been a state winner twice. She accepted the position of state director this year after the previous director, Tammy Hemmerly, moved to Florida. “I enjoy organizing things (and) helping people learn new things. I hope I can get more people interested in working with wool,” Linda commented, adding that she hopes to get more youths involved. “I encourage people to try it, even if it’s just a simple skirt or a knitted garment that makes them happy,” Linda commented. “Don’t choose (a pattern) beyond your skill level. Start with what you’ve made (before) and add a few new skills.” Linda recommended buying goodquality fabric that is more forgiving, such as flannel or a light or medium tweed, in colors that the sewist enjoys or complements their skin tone. Fasteners should be appropriate - e.g., an invisible zipper is most likely not appropriate for a heavier wool - and the seams should have some kind of finish. To avoid creating a shine on the fabric, always use a press cloth. Towels wrapped around rolled-up newspapers can be used in place of a sleeve roll when pressing curved portions of a garment.

Friday, Sept. 4, has been set as the deadline to register for the competition, and entries must be received no later than Tuesday, Oct. 20. Typically, the contest is held in Harrisburg in conjunction with the Keystone International Livestock Exposition, but that event has been canceled. To request an entry form or to learn more about the state contest, readers may contact Linda at Linda@lebaweb.com or 717-274-1197. Individuals may also visit www.makeitwith wool.com for information about the national event.

The contest is open to anyone age 8 and older. All participants must select, construct, and model their own garments unless entering the “made for others” category. All garments must have been completed in the current year. Every fashion fabric or yarn used must be at least 60% wool or specialty wool fiber, which includes alpaca, angora, camel, cashmere, llama, mohair, and vicuna. There is a cost to participate; however, every participant will receive 1.5 yards of wool fabric and a variety of sewing notions such as pressing hams and books on tailoring.

Down.” In January, Ertzgard gave his students an assignment to create a billboard that communicated the message that nothing is more important than keeping your eyes on the road while driving. In brainstorming, Mitchell knew a billboard has only a split second to get a message across to drivers. “The phone is the main distraction to everyone in driving,” said Mitchell, adding that since phone use is a main cause of teen vehicle accidents, she wanted the phone to be the focal point and the tire track to represent the crash. “It says, ‘This could happen to you,’” she noted. “I thought showing something you know could happen would be kind of persuasive.” She chose the words “Put It Down!” because of their brevity and simplicity. In the fall, Mitchell plans to attend Edinboro University near Erie to study animation. Tracy Linn of the Center for Traffic Safety spoke at the gathering. She cited statistics for Lancaster County teen crashes that showed 190 teen distracted driving crashes per year from 2009 to 2013. That number rose to 211 per year from 2014 to 2018. “That’s an increase of 11.5% in those five years,” said Linn, noting that cellphones were a root cause of those crashes. However, in 2019, crashes decreased by 13% to 183. “We are very proud of that decrease in Lancaster County,” she noted, pointing to the efforts made in peer-to-peer education, community involvement, and police department involvement. “Peer-to-peer education has been proven to change behaviors,” she said. “That’s the reason we have this contest.” MTHS was presented with a check for $1,000 for being the winning school in the competition. Each of the student designers received a check for $100 and a certificate of recognition from Rep. Steven Mentzer. This is the second consecutive year that MTHS has won the competition. Littlehale pointed to the location of the billboard and said that it was placed there based on statistics for the area from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

“That area on Route 222 North has a high rate of teen accidents,” Littlehale said. She discussed the coordination that is necessary between the brain, the eyes, the hands, and the feet to operate a 3,000-pound motor vehicle. “Add in taking a sip of coffee and

changing the radio station … (and) you have a lot going on,” she said. “The person reading a text takes their eyes off the road for 4.9 seconds. That is driving the length of a football field with your eyes closed.” Readers can see Mitchell’s billboard

design on Route 222 North just beyond the I76 exit. More information about the Center for Traffic Safety, which is based in York, may be found at https://yorkcountypa.gov/center-for -traffic-safety.

Keystone Wood Specialties recently announced that Nick Stoltzfus, vice president of operations, has been named as one of the Wood Industry 40 Under 40 award winners for 2020. The annual award, given by Woodworking Network, celebrates the next generation of industry professionals who are

leader.” The 32-year-old Nick has worked closely with his father to preserve the Lancaster-based company’s “time-honored craftsmanship and work ethic, while incorporating new technologies and product lines that will lay the groundwork for success in the years ahead,” said his nominator. “Nick’s thorough understanding of all aspects of the business is invaluable to the woodworking industry, most recently evident during the recent COVID-19 crisis,” the nominator added. “His leadership during this challenging time saved jobs and ensured the company remained viable so that the many contractors, remodelers and cabinetmakers that rely on Keystone Wood Specialties’ products could remain viable as well.” His nominator continued, “Nick’s deep appreciation for the hard work that his family and the many long-term employees have put forth in building and growing Keystone Wood Specialties

Hiking from pg 1 Kristen Holloway, founder of the Facebook page Day Hikes of Lancaster County PA, has always been a hiker. During the pandemic, she has been trying to hike at least weekly alone and with family members. “When I lived in San Diego, I found this book of day hikes of San Diego County,” said Holloway, who set herself a goal of visiting all the trails in the book while she lived there.

After returning to her native Lancaster County, Holloway decided a Facebook page could offer other avid hikers the same kind of information she had found in the book trails that offer beautiful scenery along with varying degrees of difficulty. “I knew there were all these great hikes, but I knew there were some I didn’t know about,” said Holloway. “I was looking for one place that

had all the good hikes, so I wanted to put something together so that people would know what’s out there.” Trails that are good for a variety of activities include the Enola Low Grade Trail, which can be accessed from a number of points in the county - the Turkey Hill Trail Head in Manor Township, Sigman Road in Pequea Township, and Fairview Road in Strasburg Township. The trail has a crushed stone surface and is a favorite of walkers. The White Cliffs of Conoy in Marietta are located along the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail, which can be accessed from Columbia, Marietta, or Bainbridge. Holloway said it is a paved trail often used for running and biking

in addition to hiking. The trail, which runs along the Susquehanna River, features some abandoned buildings and the cliffs, actually remnants of a limestone quarry. “It’s a pretty overlook with the white cliffs, and you’re walking along the railroad tracks, which is kind of cool,” said Holloway. For short hikes, Holloway recommends Ray’s Woods, 44 Laurel Drive, Holtwood, and the Farmingdale Trail in Noel Dorwart Memorial Park, 408 Parklawn Court, Lancaster. For more moderately challenging hikes, Holloway recommends the loop at Steinman Run Nature Preserve, 215 Stump Road, Pequea, and combining trails at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area, 100 Museum Road, Stevens, where she has spent up to three hours hiking. Because Holloway lives in Penn Manor School District, many of

the trails she has discussed on the page are in that area. For a good workout, she heads to Kelly’s Run Nature Preserve, reporting that that the trail is a loop of nearly 4 miles with hilly terrain. Kelly’s Run can be found at 199 Street Road, T397, Holtwood. Holloway said that hiking has been a family tradition. “My parents took us hiking a lot as kids,” she shared. “It’s fun, but it’s a good way to get exercise.” When Holloway hikes with her children, she likes to visit the Lancaster Conservancy Trout Run Nature Preserve, 215 Stump Road, Pequea (Holtwood). “Trout Run is great for those who like to play in the water,” she said. For green and shady hikes, Holloway recommends Lancaster Conservancy’s Climbers Run Nature Preserve, located off Frogtown Road, Pequea. Other scenic trails on Holloway’s list include

Shenk’s Ferry Wildflower Preserve, 857 Green Hill Road South, Conestoga, in Martic Township and House Rock Nature Preserve, 370 House Rock Road, Pequea. Holloway appreciates the beauty of the outdoors during solitary ventures. “I like to hike by myself,” she said. “It’s meditative, so it’s time to be in my thoughts and be in nature. You take more in when you’re by yourself.” The Facebook page Holloway founded allows her to combine her interests in hiking and photography. “I have a list of 25 more hikes to investigate that aren’t on the page (yet),” she noted. For those who are averse to the summer heat and crowded trails, she recommends hiking in the early mornings before the sun is high and the parking lots fill up.
