Time to fiddle around

Ron McVey has been involved with the annual New Holland Fiddler’s Picnic since its inception. He remembers Eleanor Hart, Dot and Bud Hollinger, and Jack Williams working with him, as he

served as master of ceremonies of the event, which was based on a fiddler’s picnic he coordinated in Chester County. “(New Holland Summer Arts Program (NHSAP) members) heard about (the Chester County) picnic and found out we ran that one,” recalled McVey. “(They) came down to

see us about starting one in New Holland.” After seeing how the Chester County event was run, NHSAP held New Holland’s first picnic in 1992, but it was held on the Saturday of the July Fourth weekend before being moved to Labor Day.

This year’s NHSAP Fiddler’s

Picnic will be held in the New Holland Park on East Jackson Street on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Fiddlers are encouraged to arrive around 8 a.m. to reserve a slot on the park stage.

In addition to string players, individuals who play the accordion,

Fred Hughes, director of the New Holland Band (NHB) and founder of the nonprofit Jazz Alive, is a man with a musical mission. “The mission (of Jazz Alive) is dedicated to the preservation of jazz,” said Hughes. “That includes community concerts and school residencies and assemblies,” he added. To help support that mission, “An Evening with the Fred Hughes Trio” will be presented in the chapel at Garden Spot Village (GSV), 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m.

In addition to Hughes on piano, the trio features Philadelphia drummer Dan Monaghan, a musician Hughes has been playing with regularly, and bass player Steve Meashey, whom Hughes has known since 1985. Hughes said the group’s repertoire will include pieces from the Great American Songbook. “I like to introduce the music of great piano players, so it will be Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington, Bill Evans, and some more piano players,” noted Hughes.

Hughes’ love of jazz grew out of his experience with the First Army Band in Seoul, South Korea. Originally a tuba player, Hughes played the organ as a prelude to the NHB spring concerts. “There were no organs

Bass fiddles, banjos, violins, and more will be among the many instruments being played at the annual New Holland Summer Arts Program Fiddler’s Picnic.

The fundraiser is held locally by Tony Andes, who will participate in a motorcycle ride in the Kingdom of Bhutan in November through Rally for Rangers. The organization has the mission to protect the world’s special places by empowering park rangers with new motorcycles and equipment. The organization’s work has reached Bhutan, Mongolia, Peru, and beyond.

The bingo event will help to support Andes’ goal of raising $6,000 to $12,000 to purchase one or two motorcycles for a park ranger in Bhutan. All donations will go to the Mongol Ecology Center, the sponsor of Rally for Rangers.

After touring with the Army’s Jazz Ambassadors, Hughes formed the Fred Hughes Trio, and in 2019, he began Jazz Alive with a vision for the next generation. “If you go to a jazz concert or a festival, it’s a lot of older folks,” Hughes pointed out. “I want to make sure in the future, folks want to play the music. It’s a big-picture thing.” Hughes’ Army experience gave him the impetus to move forward with his dream. “When I was in the Jazz Ambassadors, I was the clinic coordinator,” explained Hughes. “I saw the need to go into schools … to augment their programs.”

To that end, Jazz Alive representatives have visited schools to perform for students, work with them at their school, and then perform a concert with students in the evening. Hughes pointed out that the program is important to broaden the students’ education with exposure to jazz music.

The upcoming GSV concert will be the first since Jazz Alive became a Pennsylvania non -

harmonica, or keyboard may visit the park to join in on well-known favorites such as “Rocky Top,” “Foggy Mountain Breakdown,” “Orange Blossom Special,” and “Golden Slippers.” Country and bluegrass tunes are staples of the event.

The picnic portion of the event is supplied by the New Holland Lions Club, which brings its food trailer and offers items for purchase. According to Lions Club representative James Bronson, club members will serve hamburgers, barbecued chicken, hot ham sandwiches, chicken corn soup, hot dogs, sides, and beverages. NiCE SiZE FRiES and Schaatz Ice Cream will be on-site.

NHSAP is an all-volunteer organization that has existed in New Holland for more than three decades. The organization averages more than 20 concerts per summer in the park. New volunteers are welcome. Help is especially needed with setting up prior to concerts and clearing the park afterward. Volunteers to accept freewill offerings during intermissions are also sought.

NHSAP volunteer Sue Noll noted that this year’s picnic will include all the special traditions of celebrating the waning days of summer. “It’s all to bring people to enjoy our beautiful park … to bring families here,” Noll said.

No admission will be charged for the Fiddler’s Picnic, but freewill offerings will be received throughout the day. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Readers who would like more information about the Fiddler’s Picnic or the Summer Arts Program may visit www.newholland summerarts.com, search for “New Holland Summer Arts Association” on Facebook, or email newholland summerartsassoc@gmail.com.
