For many years, the New Holland United Methodist Church (NHUMC), 120 W. Main St., New Holland, prepared and sold dinners in the church kitchen and fellowship hall during the New Holland Fair. The fair was not held in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, but in 2021, NHUMC sold dinners from a stand in front of the church.
“We set tables up on the front lawn and a lot of people opted to eat there,” said NHUMC representative Heather Bressi. This year’s New Holland Farmers Fair will be held from Wednesday, Sept. 28, through
Last year, nearly 200 parishioners attended the picnic. This year, everyone is invited to the backyard behind the church, 150 Water St., New Holland, for a parish potluck picnic on Sunday, Sept. 11. Religious education classes for the fall semester will begin that day at 9 a.m., followed by family Mass at 10:30 a.m. and the picnic, which will last until 3 p.m. Food will be served inside.

According to organizer Colleen Greer, the church will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, and beverages, and the rest of the food will be potluck. “Everyone brings something,” said Greer, who noted that in 2021, food items brought by attendees ranged from empanadas to pizza. Cotton candy will be available as well. Those who plan to attend are asked to sign up at http://ourladyoflourdesNH.com by Sunday, Sept. 4. “Just so we don’t get 10 of the same (dish) and so we know what we need for supplies,” explained Greer. A variety of activities have been planned to delight people of all ages. Garden Spot Fire Rescue will be on-site to give bucket rides and help out with a candy drop. Special games and relay races will also be held, including a pick-a-rubberduck game, parachute games, guessing games involving jars filled with candy, bingo, cornhole, and a game called cross net that is played with a volleyball. “We will have a DJ who will keep the crowd laughing and entertained,” said Spina.
In 2021, Our Lady of Lourdes parish in New Holland rented a tent and held a welcome back picnic at the church for the purpose of gathering together after many months of adhering to COVID-19 restrictions. This year, the event has become a tradition. “Last year we rented a huge tent and filled it with people,” said Amy Spina, one of the organizers of the event. “It’s for the parish, but everyone is invited.”
“It’s a testimony night,” said Linda Ingham, Life Awakening executive director. “We are doing something different.” Rather than featuring Life Awakening’s 14th The Ingham

Last year’s picnic gathering bestowed some permanent blessings on the church. First, it coincided with the implementation of the prayer tree located in the church vestibule. Attendees are invited to write a prayer request on a leaf and hang it on the tree. The leaf may be hung so the request is seen or hidden. “Every Mass we say a prayer for the intentions on the prayer leaves,” said Greer, who noted the leaves are changed seasonally. Green leaves adorn the tree in summer, orange in fall, snowflakes in winter, and dogwood blossoms in

The New Holland Summer Arts Program (NHSAP) program, will conclude with the annual Fiddler’s Picnic in the New Holland Park on East Jackson Street. This year’s picnic will be held on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 5, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fiddlers are encouraged to arrive early to reserve a slot on the park stage. The performance schedule allows a 30-minute spot for a group and 15 minutes for a single act or a duo. Usually up to 15 acts perform, and the picnic is often a place for musicians to join up to make music together. Musicians who are considering playing on stage together will sometimes gather in spots far from the stage to practice and often draw a crowd to their own mini concert. In addition to string players, individuals who play the accordion, harmonica, or keyboard may visit the park to join in on well-known favorites such as “Rocky Top,” “Foggy Mountain Breakdown,” “Orange Blossom Special,” and “Golden Slippers.” Country and bluegrass tunes are staples of the event. The picnic portion of the event is supplied by the New Holland Lions Club, which brings its food trailer and offers items for purchase. According to Lions Club representative James Bronson, club members will serve barbecued chicken, hot ham sandwiches, chicken corn soup, hot dogs, sides, and beverages. NiCE SiZE FRiES and Schaatz Ice Cream will be on-site. A signed and numbered Myrtle Tremblay print of the Robert Fulton Birthplace located on Robert Fulton Highway in Quarryville will be at the show for viewing. The framed print, which measures 27 by 32 inches, will be given away as a prize at the Fiddler’s Picnic.NHSAP is an all-volunteer organization that has existed in New Holland for more than three decades. New volunteers are welcome. Help is especially needed with setting up prior to concerts and clearing the park afterward.
