New Holland Youth Livestock Exposition Scheduled BY ANN MEAD ASH When Katie Ranck, Bob Lauffer, and Dean Myers heard in May that the New Holland Farmers Fair for 2020 would be canceled due to COVID-19 concerns, they immediately contacted Farmers Fair board member Bill Fisher. Fisher oversees the livestock segment of the fair, and the three wanted to confirm that the livestock shows were part of that cancellation, which they were. “We respect that decision, but we also recognized that youths in the FFA and 4-H programs had (raised) livestock, and we wanted to provide an opportunity for them to have the experience of showing as well as have the sale (funds),” said Ranck. In response, Ranck, Lauffer, and Myers worked to create the New Holland Youth Livestock Exposition, which will begin with weigh-in on Thursday, Oct. 1. Shows and the livestock sale will be held on Friday, Oct. 2. Ranck and Lauffer will co-chair the sheep and goat shows, and Myers will chair the swine show. All events will take place in tents located at the New Holland Sales Stables parking lot, 101 W. Fulton St., New Holland. This is the same location the New Holland Farmers Fair livestock show has been held for several years, but the event is in no way affiliated with the New Holland Farmers Fair. Weigh-ins for all animals will be held at
It comes as no surprise that we continue to face many of the challenges we have experienced over the past six months. Who hasn’t used the word “uncertainty” more times than they can count? Despite this uncertainty, we have worked hard to keep our families and community safe while providing positive, creative ways to reinforce that we are in this together. We encourage you to continue sharing your stories and connecting with us on social media so we can go on spreading all the good we see in this world. At Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. Kiwanis Golf Tournament To Honor Three Longtime Members
INSIDE THIS ISSUE
BY ANN MEAD ASH “We always honor somebody,” said New Holland Kiwanis Club member Lee Shaffer, pointing to a photo of three wellknown New Hollanders in the brochure for the club’s annual golf tournament. “(This year), we have three longtime Kiwanians. This is such a neat thing.” The 28th tournament will be held in honor of Rod Stauffer, John Tennis, and Evan Good. The tournament is usually held at the end of May, but this year, due to COVID-19 restrictions, it has been scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 29, beginning at 12:30 p.m. at Foxchase Golf Club, 300 Stevens Road, Stevens. The tournament, played in a four-person scramble format, will include both mixed and men’s teams. Registration will include green fees, access to a driving range, use of a cart, dinner served at the pavilion immediately following the tournament, and eligibility for prizes.

The goat show will be held at 3 p.m., followed by the livestock sale at 6:30 p.m. Cleanup will commence immediately following the livestock sale. Ranck reported that the trio was discussed the possibility of holding a show in late May and in June, they researched costs and assessed the availability of resources. “By the end of June, we figured we could make it work,” she said, adding that as a new and independent entity, the biggest barrier was the financial aspect. “It was really cool to work with the local agriculture community because everyone wanted that opportunity for our youth,” said Ranck, who noted about half the estimated $3,500 had been sponsored by the end of August. By June, Ranck, Lauffer, and Myers Sheep, swine, and goats raised by were nailing down the details of the area youths will be shown and sold event. Ranck noted that they chose to at the New Holland Youth hold the livestock show and sale at the same time of year as the New Holland Livestock Exposition scheduled for Farmers Fair for the youth involved. Livestock Exposition from pg 1 Company. “The event will be fully sponsored by local agribusinesses,” said Ranck, who noted the expo has received overwhelming support from area residents and businesses. “This is important to our youth, our families, and our community,” she said. “We will thank our sponsors with sponsorship banners,” Ranck noted, adding that special sponsorship banners will be created for the Grand Champion and Reserve Champion. Organizers hope to see the
same number of participants as have taken part in past fair shows, which would mean up to 20 young people showing sheep and goats and up to 25 showing swine. While they are aware that some families made decisions in May not to undertake a project due to the uncertainty concerning fairs and shows, it is possible that youths will come from other areas of the county to take part. If that is the case, Ranck said area youths would have first priority in showing.
Ranck added that organizers are excited to be able to offer this opportunity for the youths. “We see the valued experience there, and we want them to have that,” she said. Those who take part in and attend the shows and sale are encouraged to wear face coverings and practice social distancing. Readers who would like more information about the event may visit https://sites .google.com/elanco.org/new hollandlivestockevent/home.

As a runner, Becky Link, development associate with Friendship Community, knows how 5Ks have been affected by COVID-19 restrictions. While many organized runs have been converted to virtual events, many participants, Link included, miss running in person. So, when Link had the chance to offer input for the annual Friendship Community
5K Run/Walk, she liked the idea of offering options. “We decided to focus on the 5K and have it be both virtual and inperson,” said Link. “Anyone who wants to support us but is feeling hesitant about being in groups of people, we understand and appreciate that.” For those runners, the 5K offers a virtual participation opportunity, which includes the same goodie bag, but can be done at home at the runner’s leisure.
For runners who want to join others in a 5K, the event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 8 a.m. at Friendship Community, 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, with check-in and registration prior to the race beginning at 7 a.m. The run/walk race will start at 8 a.m., and awards will be presented at approximately 9 a.m. “(We’re hoping) it won’t be humid in the morning, and it See Run/Walk pg 5

Approximately a quarter mile of the course is on grass, a mile is packed fine gravel, and the rest is paved. Link hopes the event will appeal to those who have missed running in traditional 5Ks. “We are trying to expand our horizons by connecting with folks who haven’t heard of us before to do some sort of in-person run because theirs was canceled,â€? she said. “It will look a little different, but we want to offer that race experience.â€? Organizers will station people on the course to provide cheers and encouragement to create the exciting race opportunity many runners have been missing. “Part of the fun of running is starting at the line ‌ hearing

Sarah Yohe, development director with Girls on the Run (GOTR), has an analogy concerning the different types and levels of anxiety people are feeling in relation to the pandemic. “We are all in the same storm, but we all have our own individual boats with their own holes in them that we are trying to keep plugged to stay afloat,” she said. To address that anxiety and provide a service to Lancasterarea GOTR members, the organization is providing a free link to the film “Angst: Raising Awareness Around

Anxiety” Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 8, 9, and 10. The initial live event will begin at 7 p.m. on Oct. 8. “The GOTR team will open up the evening by sharing our mission and our reasons for hosting this event,” said Yohe. Following the opener, the 56minute documentary will be shown, and then a live, halfhour discussion with approximately four panel members from related fields, such as psychology and pediatrics, will be held. Audience members will be able to submit questions to the panel. During the next two days, GOTR members and their families will have the option to watch the entire event via the link. The documentary, which was produced by IndieFlix, utilizes interviews with children and teenagers to explore the facets of anxiety and how it impacts relationships, along with offering possible solutions. Olympic athlete Michael Phelps is interviewed,
as are mental health experts. “‘Angst’ opens up the conversation about anxiety,” said Yohe, who added that the film fits with the curriculum of the weekly GOTR team meetings. “ We provide a really safe space for our girls to sit and talk about their emotions and name their emotions,” she said. “When we saw this documentary, we realized that this is a (way to) engage our community in a conversation that is so important to have right now.” “The film (seeks to) normalize the conversation (about anxiety),” said GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson. “It makes it feel that it’s OK to talk about this because everyone experiences it.” Johnson noted that with teams meeting in a variety of ways this fall, including virtually and in environments where it is safer to socially distance, the organization wanted to do more. “We feel See GOTR pg 8

being sought, and opportunities to donate will be offered at registration. “We are calling this a Thoughtful Fundraiser,” noted Yohe. This is not the first time GOTR has offered a film on a culturally significant topic with a panel discussion to its members and families. In January, the organization screened “LIKE - A Documentary About the Impact of Social Media on Our Lives and the Effects of Technology on the Brain” at the Ware Center in Lancaster. GOTR administration felt that this was an apt time to repeat that type of event, but this time in a virtual format. “When we have a pandemic, which we have all never experienced (before), we have to look at things differently,” said Johnson. “This needs to be part of what we do for our community.”
such a sense of responsibility to the hundreds of girls we would normally have in our program this fall,” she said. “(We asked), ‘How can we reach them in a way that is important and relevant?’” Realizing the film could have an impact, GOTR chose to offer the screening. Area families who wish to register to watch the film may do so for free at www.gotr lancaster.org. A few days before the event, GOTR will send registered parties a link to the online event. In addition to the link, families will receive a discussion guide they can use to follow along. “IndieFlix has also provided pandemic tips for parents to help them deal with kids’ anxiety,” said Yohe. Because there are only a limited number of links available, organizers encourage GOTR members and families to register early. Sponsorships are

Members of the New Holland Kiwanis Club are ready to hit the links when the organization holds its 28th annual golf outing on Sept. 29. Stauffer, who owned a dental practice in New Holland for 30 years, served as Kiwanis Club president in 1963. He is known for having coined a unique nickname for each club member and as the first person in New Holland to have received the Jefferson Award for Public Service. Tennis served as club president in 1978. As the former owner of Brubaker’s Sewing Center, he was the club’s provider of cloth banners. Good, former owner of Olde Heritage Real Estate, is known for his excellent golf game, having often been in contention for the club trophy over the years. He served as club president in 1984. One unique part of the tournament is the Kiwanis Club ball drop held immediately following the golf tournament’s afternoon flight. The event involves dropping 400 golf balls from a mechanical lift. “Every ball is marked with a number,” explained Shaffer, who added that three Kiwanis Club members, each holding a bucket of golf balls, will ride the lift up about 50 feet and then simultaneously dump the balls out on the green. “The first ball in the hole wins $1,000,” said Shaffer, who added that the second and third balls win lesser amounts. Sponsorship opportunities are available for the tournament. “Major sponsors are $2,000 or above,” said Shaffer, who noted that gold sponsorships are $1,000, silver are $500, and bronze sponsorships are $250. The event has been known to raise up to $16,000 per year for the club to disburse to local charities. The club has given away in excess of $250,000 over the years. “When (the tournament) first started, no one was holding golf tournaments,” recalled Shaffer. “It was so novel then.” Local organizations that have benefited from the tournament are CrossNet, Girl Scouts, Cub Scout Pack 148, New Holland Summer Arts Program, Welsh Mountain Medical and Dental, Lancaster County Special Olympics, the ELANCO Library, Garden Spot Fire Rescue, New Holland Early Learning Center, Garden Spot High School Grass-
land FFA, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Cavod Academy Stan Deen Scholarship Fund, and the Garden Spot Middle School, among others. Readers who would like to sponsor the event or take part may call 717-336-3836.
fundraising,” said Link, who noted that crowd support fundraising will be available this year. “As people register, they can create a fundraising page, so they can find sponsors for their first mile and second mile.” Registrants who want to raise additional funds may do so at http://bit.ly/ FC-5K-Fundraise2020. The cost for the event will be discounted until Friday, Sept. 25. Tech shirts will be distributed while supplies last. Online registration, available at www.FriendshipCommunity .net/5K, will close at midnight Wednesday, Sept. 23. There will be no discount for those who register on the day of the race. Friendship Community is a faith-based, licensed provider of disability services and has been cultivating the capabilities of intellectually disabled and autistic individuals since 1972. The organization currently serves more than 200 people in various programs, including 27 residential homes, three daytime programs, and those living with their loved ones or independently in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. “ We are really trying to think outside the box, as we have had to do for all COVID

If the words “moms in prayer” calls forth a picture of mothers of school-aged children meeting in a church on a weekday morning with Bibles in hand … well, one of the many Moms in Prayer groups in the area might fit that model, but it would be only a small portion of the reality. “We don’t fit inside a box,” said Sue Forry, regional coordinator for Lancaster, Lebanon, & Berks Counties Moms In Prayer International. Forry went on to note that groups are not necessarily church based. “We have groups for preschool moms, for mothers of children with special needs, and we have college and career groups,” said Forry. Moms from pg 12 Forry believes groups in Lancaster County have been active for at least 30 years. “It was formerly called Moms in Touch, but they had a name change because when you try to translate Moms in Touch to other (languages) it does not translate well,” said
Forry, who added that the group is not just for mothers of school-aged children. “We are a women’s ministry, so this is also for aunts and grandmas, and for any woman who feels compelled to pray for women in schools to impact them for Christ,” she said. According to Forry, Moms In Prayer International has several levels of leadership, including a state coordinator, regional
coordinators, and area coordinators. In Lancaster County, Mary Beth Will oversees Warwick, Manheim Central, Donegal, and Elizabethtown school districts, while Lynn Herr oversees Columbia, Hempfield, Penn Manor, Lampeter-Strasburg, and Solanco school districts. Forry oversees any districts
that do not have an area coordinator, working with local leadership in that area. “We are praying for God to raise up more area coordinators to fill in the areas that have none,” said Forry. The traditional Moms in Prayer group prays for a single school, but there are

Women who are interested in joining a local group should visit www.MomsIn Prayer.org and click on “Get Involved” and then “Join a Group.” From there, Forry says to click on “USA” and then complete and submit the form for a leader to contact you.
