pastor Steve Ritchey was not present at the founding of the New Holland church, but he knows a great deal about the history of the organization, and he has deep respect for the roots of the congregation he has pastored for nearly three decades. It is in that spirit that Steve and the members and staff of Lighthouse invite all those who have been associated with the church since its founding in 1976 to attend a homecoming service on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 10 a.m. at Garden Spot High School, 669 E. Main St., New Holland. The service will be followed by a fellowship picnic and other activities at Lighthouse’s current location, 105 Earland Drive, New Holland, beginning at 11:45 a.m. and tours of the new church building under construction

at 1279 Main St., East Earl, at 12:45 p.m.

“This will be a celebration of what God has done in this church’s history and looking toward the future of what God will do as we move into the new church,” said Steve, who hopes the congregation will be worshiping in the new sanctuary the week of Sunday, Dec. 8, which will mark Steve’s 30-year anniversary with Lighthouse.

Former Lighthouse pastors scheduled to attend the homecoming service are the Rev. Ralph Chapin and the Rev. Fred Clark, accompanied by their wives. Evi Machamer, the 98-year-old wife of a former pastor, plans to travel from Mechanicsburg to attend.

“(After the service), we are inviting everyone to 105 Earland (Drive) for a picnic under a tent,” said Landon Ritchey, youth and connections pastor with Lighthouse. Activities, in addition to

Megan Feveryear is on a mission. For the last few years, the Nashville resident - formerly of the eastern Lancaster County - has been bringing women’s conferences to the New Holland Church of the Nazarene. This fall, Feveryear is organizing a conference for women of all ages, but designed specifically to appeal to mothers and daughters.

“This one is (called) Grace Wants You,” said Feveryear, who explained the conference is named for the ministry she will present with at the New

Holland Church of the Nazarene, 428 Ranck Road, New Holland, on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There is a cost to attend the conference for all registered participants, with an added fee for an optional lunch.

According to Feveryear, she became acquainted with Janene and Elena Dubbeld - “a sweet mother and daughter who do women’s conferences”- through a virtual Bible study the three were enrolled in during COVID-19 restrictions. “We are (all) passionate about women and ministry and pouring into each lady

In 1954, Alvin Engle bought a printing press with a dream of starting his own publication. Alvin, who had been working full time in the printing business, put the press in the basement of his home in Mount Joy, and together he and his wife, Pauline, laid the foundation for what would become Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). As EPC

celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, the company invites members of the community to attend an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, at its facility at 1100 Corporate Blvd. in Lancaster.

Refreshments will be available to purchase from food trucks such as Auntie Anne’s, Cupcakes by Casey, Tri-County Barbecue and Homage. Guests may enjoy

According to Feveryear, the day will begin with registration, followed by a worship kickoff led by Elena and then a welcome by Feveryear. “Janene, Elena’s mom, will share her incredible testimony,” said Feveryear, who noted that Janene was abandoned by her parents on the doorstep of a stranger when she was only a baby. “Those strangers became her adopted family,” noted Feveryear. “When she was only a day old, God was chasing after her from the doorsteps of the random stranger’s house.” Janene’s testimony will be followed by lunch and another

Since 1954, Achenbach’s Pastries, 375 E. Main St., Leola, has provided homestyle pastry products to generations of customers in the Lancaster area. The bakery is known for its long Johns, sticky buns, vanilla and pecan rings, pies and cakes.

Achenbach’s Pastries, with a leadership team composed of owners David Burkholder, Sharon Redcay and Andrew Orrs, still bakes with fresh ingredients and does not use typical additives like

preservatives, humectants and synthetic gums.

The made-from-scratch products are available at the bakery in Leola, located 10 miles east of Lancaster on Route 23.

The baked goods are also available at various retail locations, and some of the popular items are even available for shipping.

“Over the past 48 years, there have been many wonderful individuals and families who have been a part of Lighthouse,” Steve stated. “As we will be moving to a new location, we wanted to have a special day to celebrate the goodness of the Lord and to honor those who have been a part (of the organization).”

Along with the many activities planned for the homecoming, organizers would like to see those in attendance enjoying spending time with the church community. “The hope is that people will connect with old friends and take some trips down memory lane,” said Steve, who shared details of the

founding of the church along with news of the new building. Lighthouse founders moved to the Earland Building in 1977 after meeting at the White Horse, Witmer, and New Holland fire halls. The new building, which will encompass more than 60,000 square feet, will include a café, a kitchen, offices, a chapel, and a gymnasium.

Participants in the trip were students from Cocalico, Pequea Valley (PV), Ephrata and Twin Valley high schools. The students were accompanied by teacher chaperones Lori Warfel from Ephrata, Kate Gomez and Corry Bilby from Cocalico, Betsy Techman and Ruth Hernandez from Twin Valley and Jennifer Bilby from Pequea Valley.

“It’s great because it’s so hands-on. There is so much to see and do,” said Jennifer. “While I love museums, this is so much more interesting and active. (The students and chaperones) were so happy they went.”

Every other year, local students have the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica in a travel cohort made up of local school students. The trip is presented by WorldStrides, a student travel company.

Students at various schools are invited to participate. “We put up signs and, in our case, told (the students) about (the trip) in our classes and we had an initial meeting for those who (were) interested,” said Jennifer, who teaches Spanish at PV High School.

“At first we advertise to students in Spanish classes. Then it goes to whoever is interested.”

The cohort has traveled to Costa Rica every other year since 2012, missing only 2020 due to the pandemic. The students fundraise together, have group meetings to prepare and collect school supplies ahead of time to take to the children in Costa Rica.

Jennifer said one of the goals of the trip is for students to enhance their Spanish-speaking skills, giving them an opportunity to use the language with native speakers. “No one is required to speak Spanish, but some jump at the opportunity,” she noted. “Our guide that we had is really great with the students, so students can practice with him if they want to before they interact with everybody else.”

As part of the trip, students and their teachers visited Arenal Volcano National Park and the hot springs there, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve. They also went horseback riding, went ziplining at Arenal Mundo Aventura, visited a butterfly conservatory and ecological farm and took part in a cooking class at Playa Rayada, where they made salad, homemade corn tortillas and arroz con pollo (rice with chicken).

Other activities included participating in a boat tour of Palo Verde National Park,

visiting with students at a technical school, visiting the Britt Coffee plantation and taking part in a guided sightseeing tour of San José, the capital of Costa Rica.

Jennifer said the students really enjoyed the trip because they were able to participate in community activities and see local traditions firsthand. “I think the cooking lessons and the ziplining were really a top hit with them,” she said. “The cooking was so interactive and fun, plus you get to eat (the) food (you prepare). Hot springs are always popular, too.”

When asked what the students’ favorite part of the trip was, Jennifer replied, “It’s hard to pick one. They seemed to really enjoy all of the trip.

She added that the cohort of traveling teachers will soon be planning for the 2026 trip. “We find out what the travelers like and don’t like for the next trip,” she said. “We try to make our trip better each year.”

The students agreed that the trip is one they will

not soon forget. “Traveling together isn’t just about the places we go; it’s about the experiences we share and the memories we create,” said Adelynn Yunginger of Ephrata High School.

“It was truly the best choice I have ever made. Not only did I get to spend time with my friends and make memories that will last a lifetime, but I also got to make new friends that I would’ve never had the chance to meet if it weren’t for this trip,” said Abby Tillman of PV. “It was truly life changing to see a whole different world and make so many new fun memories. Having the opportunity to go on this trip is truly a blessing; many people only get to dream of these types of opportunities.”

“To travel is a journey of the soul,” added Amelia Madrigal of Cocalico. The teachers also enjoyed the trip. “We watched as students and adults overcame fears and shared new experiences together, and it was beautiful,” said Techman.

The Alleghany Mennonite Historical Association will hold a hymn sing led by Lamar Reiff in the 1855 Alleghany Mennonite Meetinghouse, 39 Horning Road, Mohnton, near Alleghenyville. It will take place on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m. Participants

should bring a copy of “Hymns of the Church” if they have one. They may also bring picnic lunches to enjoy on the meetinghouse lawn before the hymn sing. For more information, call 717-305-0231 or email leidcountry@outlook.com.

Conestoga Wood marks 60th anniversary

Conestoga Wood Specialties, a manufacturer of custom cabinet doors and components for the kitchen and bath industry, recently commemorated six decades of innovation, craftsmanship and dedication to quality. From a small garage offering five door styles to a multi-location corporation with more than a thousand door designs, Conestoga Wood has come a long way from its modest beginnings.

Experienced cabinet makers Norman and Sam Hahn from East Earl founded Conestoga Wood in 1964, discovering their niche in creating cabinet doors not typically produced in small cabinet shops at the time. As the product line has expanded over the last 60 years, so have the manufacturing locations, which now include Beaver Springs, Beavertown and Kenly, N.C.

Conestoga Wood remains a family-owned company, with the current headquarters located just steps away from the original workshop. The work ethic and conservative values of the Hahn brothers continue to be the cornerstone of Conestoga’s present-day values: integrity, respect, accountability, resourcefulness and innovation. Visit www.conestogawood .com for more information.
