event are available. Seating will be limited, and those wishing to attend should register by Monday, Oct. 4. There is no cost to attend the event. A freewill offering will be received. Strawberry is a former professional right fielder and an author. He played 17 seasons in the major leagues, where he was known as a slugger whose every at-bat held homerun potential. He helped lead the New York Mets to a World Series championship and the New York Yankees to three World Series championships. He was also suspended three times for substance abuse. His memoir, “Straw: Finding My Way,” was published in April 2009. Carr had a career in banking and banking technology prior to applying to ROFM. He and his wife moved to New Holland three years ago after visiting the Lancaster area for decades. “I came to New Holland for the purpose of going into full-time ministry,” said Carr. While continuing to work in the banking industry from home, Carr worked part time at Water Street Mission and Friendship Community. In May, he was taking part in a prayer meeting at Christian Fellowship Church, where he is a member. One of the ROFM board members asked that the group pray that the organization could find a new director. “I went home and thought, ‘Why not me? I want to go into ministry,’” Carr said. Carr, who will give an update on the ministry at the banquet, has made some changes since his arrival at ROFM, moving one employee to a marketing coordinator position and hiring a grant writer and donation coordinator, who will begin in October. Readers who are interested in attending the banquet may call 717-351-5680 or email banquet@rofm.org.

Kissinger is a mezzo-soprano and classically trained pianist and organist with a concentration in jazz piano studies. She studied under master voice teacher Thomas Houser. She holds a degree in music education from Millersville University. Chon, who is a tenor, is an avid vocalist, performing at weddings and events, and singing at local churches. Chon is a graduate of Tulane University. He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Chon is known for improvement initiatives he has championed at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital. “This is our third attempt to sing a concert since Nov. 2, 2013,” noted Kissinger. That first concert was a fundraiser for Relay For Life. A second concert was planned for Nov. 2, 2019, but it was canceled when Chon’s family had a pressing conflict. The concert was rescheduled for May 2020, but it was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions. Kissinger is director of music at Mellingers Evangelical Lutheran Church, Shoeneck, where she formed a praise band called AHAVA, which means “love” in Hebrew. “There’s a lot of musical talent there, so it’s working wonderfully,” said Kissinger. “We have all professional musicians in the band,” she added, pointing out that two of the members are also participants in the well-known Craven Family Band. Calling the songs AHAVA will perform “new and fresh,” Kissinger said members are looking forward to performing a different genre of music. AHAVA members include Kissinger as director and on keyboard and vocals; the Rev. Tim Craven, church pastor, on guitar and vocals; Kim Craven on bass; Erin and John Biles providing vocals; and Jonathan Hogan on percussion. Those who are planning to attend are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for seating. Social distancing in accordance with current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention protocols will be practiced. A freewill offering will be received. Readers who have questions may call 717-354-6575 or email vickiekissinger@gmail.com.

Poole Forge Day, featuring children’s activities, food, crafts, live music, pony rides, goat races, a volleyball tournament and more, will take place at Historic Poole Forge, 1940 Main St., Narvon, on Saturday, Sept. 18, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission and parking are free. The day will begin at the picnic pavilion, where there will be a presentation by the Raven Ridge Wildlife Center. The program will feature live animals, including reptiles and a raptor show with hawks and owls. Arts and crafts will also be available for children in the pavilion, including twig art, where children can make crafts using items from nature. The popular goat races will take place in the afternoon. “The goats and their owners will travel through an obstacle course this year,” noted
Dawn Ekdahl, Poole Forge executive director. “It’s very cute. Each of the goats has its own personality.” There will also be a turtle race in the afternoon. Visitors who “purchase” green rubber turtles that will float down the Conestoga Creek will be in the running for prizes. “The first turtle across the line gets the grand prize,” noted Eckdahl. There will also smaller prices for the other top finishers. A daylong Amish youth volleyball tournament will take place in the ballfield and meadow across the creek. “This is not just local Amish youth; they are coming from a couple of hours away,” noted Ekdahl. “It’s a serious competition.” The Penn’s Woods Puppet Theater will present three shows of “Jack and the Beanstalk” throughout the course of the day, and pony rides will be offered for chil-
dren alongside the covered bridge. There will also be barrel train rides. A Gruber wagon will be on display, as well as antique brass cars that will be exhibited by members of the Susquehanna Valley Region of the Horseless Carriage Club of America. “They will arrive around 10 a.m. and parade through the park around noon. They will cross the covered bridge,” said Ekdahl. The Lancaster Spinners and Weavers Guild will offer demonstrations throughout the day. “They plan on doing a sheep-to-shawl program to practice for the Farm Show,” Ekdahl noted. There will be a silent auction, with goods and gift certificates donated by local businesses. The 18th-century Welsh ironmaster’s mansion will be open for tours, and live music will be offered throughout the day on the porch. Also fea-
tured will be a parade of pony carts, a pet parade and a fireman’s exhibit. DJ Jay Mattson will provide music. Offering food and beverages will be the Caernarvon Ladies Auxiliary Food Wagon, Lickity Split Ice Cream, Sunrise Coffee Company and The Pretzel Place. The day will end with an airplane candy drop. “That was so much fun (in 2019),” said Ekdahl, noting that 2020 Poole Forge Day was canceled because of the pandemic. “We had great weather the whole day, and at the end of the day there was rain threatening. (The pilot) ended up doing the candy drop in the light rain. It was raining candy from the sky. It was a great way to end the day.” For more information about Poole Forge Day, visit www .historicpooleforge.org or www .facebook.com/HistoricPoole Forge or call 484-797-5302.

Last year, CrossNet gave away nearly 300 coats. This year, the coat giveaway will take place at the CrossNet Youth Center, 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland, on Oct. 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The giveaway serves infants through seniors in high school within the ELANCO School District whose families participate in free and reduced-cost lunch programs or have been affected by COVID-19 restrictions. Proof of residency, such as a utility bill, will be required. Anyone age 3 and up who enters the building is required to wear a mask. To gather the necessary items to keep New Holland area children warm this winter, CrossNet will accept coats, hats, scarves, and gloves, along with toiletries, at its offices at 123 W. Students in that age group generally wear youth sizes 10 through 16. Financial donations for the giveaway will also be accepted. As in the past, CrossNet will partner with the Anchored Ministries Mobile Clothing Closet of Elverson, and students will be able to choose hats, scarves, gloves, blankets, toiletries, and shoes, and each will receive a free snack. Shoes and boots will mostly be provided by Anchored Ministries; however, if area residents wish to donate gently used winter boots, CrossNet will be happy to accept donations. On Aug. 10, CrossNet gave away nearly 500 backpacks filled with school supplies to ELANCO students. Readers with questions may contact the office at lisa@elancocross.org or call 717-355-2454.
