Garden Spot

A quilt lover’s paradise

Sally Mittelstadt, a member of the Garden Spot Village (GSV) Quilt Club and an organizer of the first Quilt Fest, is excited to invite quilt lovers from around the area to GSV. “It’s free and open to the public,” said Mittelstadt. “Come for the day,” she encouraged.

Quilt Fest will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at GSV, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. A variety of quilts will be on display, with some available for purchase. The display will include the Victor

Weaver Quilt on loan from the New Holland Area Historical Society and eight antique quilts made prior to 1900. There will also be a quilting demonstration, which will include quilt piecing, hand quilting, and comforter knotting, in the Village Park. Two presentations by local art historian Gloria Mast will be given in the chapel, and GSV’s stores and eateries will be open. Grab-and-go meals will be offered to eat on the porch, and plenty of on-site parking will be available for visitors.

Mast’s first presentation will be given at 10 a.m., and it will feature the Esprit Quilts collected

by Doug Tompkins, founder of North Face Inc. The collection, now housed at LancasterHistory, is comprised of 82 quilts made by Lancaster County Amish women between 1890 and 1950. Mast noted the quilts were made for display and “not to be cuddled in.”

Mast’s 1 p.m. presentation will focus on Susie Riehl, a local Amish watercolorist known for her paintings of quilts.

To coincide with Mast’s presentations, GSV resident Shirley Wenger, a photographer who worked with Riehl to create and sell her paintings, will bring her private quilt collection to be

“We raised more money (in 2023) than in 2022,” said a grinning Krisana Poontajak, pastor of Cedar Grove Presbyterian Church, which participates in the New Holland Area CROP Walk. Indeed, the 2023 effort topped 2022 numbers by more than $400. Poontajak noted that although fewer churches participated in 2023, more walkers took part.

to host Lydia Hamilton Smith biographer

Mark Kelley, an author and former broadcast journalist and teacher, remembers what inspired him to undertake his latest project - a biography of Lydia Hamilton Smith. “We watched Steven Spielberg’s movie about Abraham Lincoln,” recalled Kelley, who recounted how the second half of the movie delved into the life of Lancastrian Thaddeus Stevens and his

work to pass the 13th Amendment. Kelley was intrigued by the suggestion that the connection between Stevens and Lydia Hamilton Smith, who lived in Stevens’ home as a housekeeper, may have been more than it seemed.

Kelley will discuss his book “An Uncommon Woman: The Life of Lydia Hamilton Smith” in the chapel at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Thursday,

NHAHS

Sept. 19, as the featured presenter for the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS).

Lydia was born in Gettysburg, and Stevens, who practiced law in that area, knew her when she was a youngster. In her late teens, Lydia married Jacob Smith, an African American man from Harrisburg.

During that same time period, Stevens, who had been raised in Vermont by a Baptist mother, was undergoing changes in his outlook. “Stevens had a crisis of conscience about slavery and became an abolitionist,” noted Kelley. While living in Gettysburg, Stevens worked with Quakers to run an Underground Railroad station at the iron works he owned there. “(Stevens) used houses on the property to harbor fugitives on their way to Canada,” explained Kelley. By 1840, Lydia and Jacob and their two sons had moved to Harrisburg. When the marriage ended in 1844, Lydia moved to Lancaster, where her cousin lived, eventually becoming Stevens’ housekeeper.

According to Kelley’s book, Lydia assisted Stevens as he worked to pass not only the 13th, but also the 14th and 15th amendments. Stevens had a Philadelphia artist paint a portrait of Lydia shortly after she moved to Lancaster, something Kelley indicates would have been rare for an employer to do for an employee at the time. Lydia

cared for Stevens during the last several years of his life when he was quite ill. Kelley believes that Lydia and Stevens lived together for more than 20 years. He also noted that Stevens sought to leave Lydia money from his estate, eventually having $5,000 in back wages paid to her upon his death. Stevens was buried in Shreiner-Concord Cemetery, one of the few Lancaster cemeteries that would allow African American burials at the time. Lydia, however, does not rest beside him; she was buried in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery more than a decade after Stevens’ death. Kelley was born in Waynesburg, but grew up in New Holland, attending Garden Spot High School before going on to earn his doctorate in journalism from Syracuse University. He worked in broadcast journalism for 25 years notably at WSTM TV Syracuse. Kelley’s teaching career took him to the University of Maine, where he taught journalism and mass communications. Kelley returned to the area in 2015. He is the author of five books, including “Rain of Ruin,” a historical novel about his mother’s experience working in the head offices of the Manhattan Project.

The program is free and open to the public. More information about NHAHS may be found at https:// nhhistorical.com or by searching for “New Holland Area Historical Society” on Facebook.

Cornerstone to present 10th annual Walk for Life

For the past nine years, Cornerstone Reproductive Health has held a Walk for Life event, featuring a 5K walk, a flag football tournament and children’s activities that took place at Salisbury Township Park in Gap. This year, the event will be held at a new venue, and, instead of flag football, an amateur cornhole tournament will be featured.

The 10th annual Walk for Life, titled Walk. Play.

Celebrate Life., will take place on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at New Holland Church of the Nazarene, 428 Ranck Road, New Holland.

“Since it is the 10th annual, we decided to

switch things up,” explained Olivia Imchen, Cornerstone’s director of client services and advancement, noting that New Holland is approximately a 15-minute drive from the Gap park. “New Holland is a central location, so we’re hoping that brings in more of the community.”

“(The 5K) will be on the walking trail behind the church,” she added. “The trail is about a mile long, so (walkers) will do three loops for it to be a 5K.”

The walk is open to people of all ages, and prizes will be awarded to the individual walker and team of walkers who collect the most funds from sponsorships.

“Children will get a passport (representing) nine months (of gestation),” said Imchen. “There will be stations along the walk for 14 weeks, 28 weeks, etc., and once they get the passport full for all nine months, they will get a prize.”

She added that cornhole was chosen as a new component because it is a fun and popular activity.

“People can sign up in pairs (for cornhole),” she said, noting that participants can register in advance for the walk and for cornhole.

“Prizes will be awarded for the first-, second- and third-place winners of the tournament.

Offered during the day will be free food, including hot dogs, popcorn, chips and cookies. “When people register, they will get a

Quilter’s Yard-age Sale slated

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) invites quilters, sewists and crafters to the 2024 Quilter’s Yardage Sale on Friday, Sept. 20, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Named after the substantial amounts of fabric yardage for sale, the event will take place at the Material Resource Center (MRC), located at 517 W. Trout Run Road, Ephrata.

Throughout the year, donations of fabric, sewing

supplies and unfinished quilting projects are given to the MRC. These items come from people who are cleaning out their sewing rooms, downsizing their homes or closing their fabric stores. Bringing these donations to the MRC keeps sewing and quilting items from ending up in the landfill. It also helps to support the ministries of MCC in relief, development and peacebuilding.

In addition, the Quilter’s Yard-age Sale will feature

unfinished quilt projects, vintage items, quilt books and magazines, patterns, pre-priced finished quilts, wall hangings, sewing tools and notions and supplies, knitting supplies and crafting items.

Upcycled items handmade by MRC volunteers will also be available for purchase, including woven rag rugs and table runners, tote bags, potholders and aprons made from donated textiles.

Proceeds from the Quil-

ter’s Yard-age Sale benefit MCC’s ministries around the world. MCC is a global, nonprofit organization that strives to share God’s love and compassion for all through relief, development and peace.

For more information about the Quilter’s Yard-age Sale, call 717-733-2847, email EastCoastMRC@mcc. org or visit www.mcc.org/ events/quilters-yard-age -sale. Only cash or checks will be accepted at the sale.

Peggy, inspired by vocalists such as Carole King and Joni Mitchell, wrote her first song at 18. She later learned more about her Irish ancestry and Celtic music, and some of her musical creations reflect both Celtic and jazz influences.

Eric and Peggy joined with percussionist Henry Patterson to form the trio, which performs original songs in the American folk, Celtic, jazz, and world rhythm genres. At the Eicher event, the group will also play covers of other composers’ songs in those genres.

In addition to providing vocals and percussion, Maggie plays the guitar and ukulele, and Spike plays the guitar, banjo, and Irish bouzouki. The percussion instruments featured include the Irish bodhran, African djembe, Spanish castanets, Middle Eastern dumbek, Afro-Cuban bongos, and Latin American cabana and shakere, along with musical washboards, spoons, and wood blocks. The Maggie Spike Trio’s world rhythm music features calypso, reggae, Mediterranean, Afro-Cuban, African, Brazilian, and Middle Eastern influences.

This year, Cedar Grove will join forces with Akron Mennonite Church, Ranck’s United Methodist Church (UMC), Community Church at Garden Spot Village (GSV), and Leola UMC to recruit walkers for the 47th annual CROP Walk. The event will begin in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, in the 400 block of Jackson Street, New Holland, on Sunday, Oct. 20. The walk will leave the Rotary Pavilion at 1:30 p.m. Participants are asked to meet at the park at 1 p.m. to complete the registration process. They may walk up to 3 miles following a route through GSV.

CROP Walks, sponsored by Church World Service (CWS), raise funds to help transform communities by bringing food and water to people in need. In some countries, people travel up to 6 miles a day to obtain clean water. CROP funds help to dig wells to provide water for drinking and agriculture. In addition to helping those in need overseas, a percentage of CROP funds remain in the communities where they were raised. In 2023, the CrossNet Food and Nutrition Center in New Holland received more than $600, and the Conestoga Valley Christian Community Ser-

According to Cheryl Zook Justice of Akron Mennonite Church, CROP Walk is one of several humanitarian aid projects the church is involved in. “A lot of people in our church have a history with Mennonite Central Committee or Mennonite Disaster Service,” said Justice, who added that members also volunteer with local food pantries and shelters. “(CROP Walk) is a piece of the hunger package,” Justice explained. A special effort is made to involve youths associated with the church. “We have active kids who can walk and collect money and manage this so when they’re adults they can take over,” she said. Poontajak noted that the yearly increase in funds raised by the New Holland Walk is encouraging and that she hopes to see the event raise more than $10,000 this year. George Weaver, the recruiter for Leola UMC, noted that more church recruiters are needed to help increase participation. Those who wish to become church recruiters may email pastorkris@frontier.com or call 717-354-5573. Information about the walk may be found at www .crophungerwalk.org.

displayed. “Susie had ideas for paintings of quilts, but she didn’t have a camera,” recalled Wenger. “So I took pictures, and she painted from them.” Wenger opened the Double Heart Gallery, which sold Riehl’s works of art, and they became good friends. In addition, the Share and Care Shop, a thrift store located on the lower level of GSV, will sell Riehl prints and notecards. Specially selected gently used quilts will be on sale in the shop, and framed pieces of Riehl’s artwork will be on display.

shopping during the event. Mittelstadt said the quilting club used to hold a July quilt airing but the hot weather led the group to switch to an autumn event. Both newly quilted and gently used items will be sold in the Village Park. “Two-thirds of our quilts are hand-quilted,” pointed out Mittelstadt. Funds raised by the sale of quilts in the Village Park that day will be donated to the GSV Benevolent Care Fund, which benefits residents who have exhausted their finances.

five months consisting of residential training at Fort Indiantown Gap (FTIG) and a minimum of one year of mentorship back in participants’ home communities.

The KSCA conducts two classes a year, one starting in mid-July and the other in mid-January. Applications are accepted all year.

Cadets are introduced to the military structure and focus on eight core components: academic excellence, physical fitness, leadership and followership, responsible citizenship, job skills, service to the community, health and hygiene, and life coping skills. Graduates often receive high school credits, credentials, or a GED diploma.

KSCA is the Pennsylvania program of the national Youth Challenge program.

The KSCA is a joint effort between the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and the National Guard Bureau in consultation with the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The opening of the academy at FTIG in Lebanon County in July 2022 formally established the program in Pennsylvania.

Since the inception of the national Youth Challenge program in 1993, more than 200,000 cadets have graduated. The National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program currently operates 40 Youth Challenge sites in 28 states and territories. The program is both federally and state funded.
