A Taste Of New Holland BY ANN MEAD ASH

ELANCO-area residents were understandably disappointed when the New Holland Fair was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions; however, a few resourceful citizens have organized outdoor events that can be held safely at the time the fair is usually held. Nick Good, office manager with Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR), began talking to GSFR director of development Daryl Groff, along with Mitch and Gina Dissinger, owners of Lickity Split in New Holland. “It started as an idea to bring the community together, shared Good. “We can’t have a fair this year, but we would like to do something. That something will be Taste of New Holland Food Fest, a food truck gathering that will be held in the parking lot at 328 E. Main St., New Holland, the new facility for JM Lapp and The Silk Mill on Main.

The two-day extravaganza will take place Friday, Oct. 2, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 3, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event planning committee includes Good, Mitch and Gina, Katie Adams, Steve Loewen, and Bryant Glick. Danielle Landis created the logo. “We have a pretty good list of (vendors), reported Good, who noted that the GSFR trailer will be there to sell oyster sandwiches. He also listed Hen House Grilling, Nice Size Fries, the local hot dog cart called the Crazy Train, and Meadow Creek Barbecue Supply. “The Lions Club will sell ham sandwiches, and Yoder’s will sell whoopie pies, added Good, who noted that Auntie Anne’s Pretzels and Lorah’s Chocolates from Bowmansville will also be offered. The New Holland United Methodist Church will have a table, and Lickity Split will sell ice cream creations. Good said that organizers focused on local vendors. “We started with New Holland and then reached out to the general ELANCO area, he said. “It’s a great community event,

and we want to support the community businesses. The first-time event has been planned with safety in mind. “We encourage masks and social distancing, said Good, noting that the choice of a large parking lot was intentional. “We feel good about that, he said. Because it is inevitable that area seniors and others may want to sit to eat, Good said organizers hope to have four or five tables, with local Scouts or youths from another organization available to disinfect tables after each use. “With (seniors), we want to make sure there is a place to sit, and we want to follow the rules, said Good. “We don’t want to encourage too much socializing. Portable toilets with adjacent handwashing stations will also be on site. Organizers wanted the Food Fest to benefit a local nonprofit, and the issues associated with COVID-19 had caused GSFR difficulties with fundraising. “We’re going to make this a fundraiser for the fire company and an event that everybody can come out to, said Good. “(Attendees)

Say It With Roses ‌ And Help Local Children BY ANN MEAD ASH

A few months ago, the Garden Spot Pennysaver asked area residents to name their hometown heroes. Ruthie Horning, a volunteer with the New Holland Ambulance Association, wrote to tell us about EMS chief Darrell Fisher, saying, in part, “Darrell is available ‌ for his EMTs when they face a difficulty while on an emergency call. Having the knowledge that my

About 20 years ago, the New Holland Kiwanis Club was given the opportunity to take part in the state organization’s annual rose sale fundraiser. Club member Lee Shaffer ordered a dozen of the multi-hued, long-stem flowers for his wife, Jenny. Only he and one other club member ordered roses that year for a total of about five dozen. At the next club meeting, Shaffer told other members that he thought selling the roses would be a great fundraiser and that he thought a member should look into the possibility. A few weeks later, when

to do it right,’” said Shaffer, who noted that the first year he served as chair, the club sold about 100 dozen roses. “The second year, we sold 300 dozen,” said Shaffer, adding that the club has not sold less than 600 dozen in many years. “Last year, we sold more than 700 dozen,” Shaffer stated. Orders for the 2020 New Holland Kiwanis Club rose sale will be accepted through Sunday, Sept. 27. This year, Shaffer noted that area residents have special reasons to give roses. “We are emphasizing that this is a neat thing you can do for friends and family members who have been shut in,” he said. “There is nothing that can put a smile on a face like receiving a dozen roses.” Shaffer also noted that business owners can purchase the roses to reward loyal employees who

have reported for work in spite of the virus, and that anyone can give a dozen to health care workers, first responders, and grocery store workers who have been on the front lines throughout the pandemic. Shaffer recalled that the year the club sold 100 dozen roses, he quickly realized it would be impossible to separate and box the orders during a one-hour club meeting. “So, we moved to the Grace Family Church,” said Shaffer, who will arrive at the church at 5 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22, when the roses are delivered. “The truck delivers approximately 1,000 dozen (roses) because we serve as the coordination area for the local Kiwanis clubs in Lebanon and Lancaster,” he explained, noting that the truck is unloaded between 5 and 6 a.m. Up to 40 helpers including club members, family, and friends, arrive at the church by 6 a.m. “ We box more than 700 dozen roses in about 90 minutes, which is

amazing,” said Shaffer, adding that most club members will be headed out to deliver their roses between 7 and 8 a.m. The sale is the club’s second-biggest fundraiser, with the first being the annual golf tournament, which is usually held each May. This year, COVID-19 restrictions forced the club to reschedule the golf outing for Tuesday, Sept. 29. Shaffer said past rose sales have raised about $6,000 for the club. Funds raised by the club are generally marked for donation to organizations that benefit children in some way. For that reason, the Girl Scouts, Cub Scout Pack 148, Special Olympics of Lancaster County, the ELANCO Library, and CrossNet are often among the recipients. The Kiwanis Club also provides funds to maintain a pavilion in the New Holland Community Park and supports Garden Spot Fire Rescue. Readers who wish to support the rose sale may call 717-445-6749.

Shaffer returned from vacation, he learned that he had been selected as rose sale chairman. Shaffer took the job seriously, and for many years now, the New Holland club has sold more dozens of roses than any other Kiwanis Club in the state. “I thought, ‘If we are going to do this, we need

the school district whose families participate in free and reduced-cost lunch programs or are affected by COVID-19 restrictions. Proof of residency, such as a utility bill, will be required. To comply with COVID-19 guidelines, the number of people picking up coats at one time will be limited. Family groups will be asked to stay together, and social distancing will be observed. Anyone age 3 and up who enters the building is required to wear a mask. As in the past, Kerstetter noted that there is a special need for certain sizes of coats specifically for third- through sixth-grade students, who usually wear youth sizes 10 through 16. Financial donations for the giveaway will also be accepted. Blankets and toiletries will also be available. Shoes and boots will mostly be provided by Anchored Ministries; however, if area residents wish to donate new and gently used winter boots, CrossNet will be happy to accept them. In August, CrossNet gave away more than 450 backpacks filled with school supplies. “We partnered with Anchored for the backpack giveaway as well,” said Kerstetter, who added that Anchored parks its clothing trailer outside the youth center during each community meal as well. “The community meal is happening as a drive-through,” said Kerstetter, who noted that meals are held on the fourth Monday of each month, with the next one scheduled for Sept. 28 from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. “This past month, we (provided) 312 meals,” said Kerstetter, who noted that in July, 375 meals were given away. EASY HOMEMADE GRANOLA BARS - 5 cups old fashioned oats - 2 tsp. vanilla extract - 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter - 1/2 cup salt - 2/3 cup Golden Barrel Light Brown Sugar - 1 cup unsweetened shredded coconut - 1/2 cup Honey - 1/2 cup chocolate chips - 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter Preheat oven to 350o F. Prepare a 9x13” pan with parchment paper, sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside. Spread oats (and if using nuts) on a baking sheet. Bake for about 10 minutes or until toasted, stirring halfway through for even toasting. While oats are in oven, in a saucepan over medium heat, add butter, brown sugar, honey, and peanut butter. Stir occasionally until melted and sugar is dissolved. Take off heat and add in vanilla extract and salt, stirring until combined. After oats are toasted, pour them into a large bowl. Add shredded coconut to the oats. Pour hot butter/sugar mixture over top and stir to combine. Let set for 10-15 minutes before adding in chocolate chips. Stir in chocolate chips and pour mixture into prepared 9x13” pan. Using the back of a measuring cup, press mixture into pan. Place in refrigerator until hardened and cooled. Once cool, cut into bars. Store in airtight container at room temperature.

Inc. Amazon will donate 0.5% of the price of eligible purchases to the foundation. Most of the foundation’s work is in Title 1 schools, which are schools with a large concentration of low-income students. Everything the student needs to complete the experiment is provided by the SPARKS Foundation, including a lab coat and safety goggles. To learn more, readers may visit www.sparksfound ation.org.

R063104

This fall, the SPARKS Foundation will bring science experiments and education to students, no matter what teaching format their school adopts. The foundation can easily arrange Zoom meetings between the instructors and students, but getting the materials to the students is more difficult. Single serve packages have been created so that students can follow along at school or at home. This individual packaging costs more than the usual packaging, so the foundation is seeking additional public support. The SPARKS Foundation collects donations from individuals, companies, and foundations and turns them into hands-on science education for elementary school children. An easy way to support the foundation is with a Facebook fundraiser or through Amazon Smile. To donate through Amazon Smile, readers may visit www.smile.amazon.com and choose SPARKS Foundation

Darrell Fisher heads up the New Holland Ambulance Association, which boasts more than 100 volunteers along with five paid staff members.

Leola,” said Fisher. Fisher noted that scheduling volunteer coverage is done via a phone app. “ We patch it together (because) volunteers have lives outside of here.” Born and raised in Farmersville, Fisher completed his elementary and high school education through a combination of charter school and homeschooling. In 2003, at the age of 17, he became an EMT. He also started his own landscaping business, which he sold at age 19 when he married. After that, he worked in construction. At that time, the EMS chief was filled by a volunteer, a position Fisher took in 2008. But the job was beginning to require more than volunteer attention. The board approached Fisher about becoming full-time. “I was not interested,” said Fisher, who noted that board member Bill Clisham was especially persistent that Fisher should take the job he now professes to love. Fisher became full-time in 2011, and he graduated from Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences as a paramedic in 2014. Fisher noted COVID-19 has wrought significant changes in the way the association

operates. “We are fortunate to have medical director Dr. Michael Reihart,” said Fisher. “He has been amazing deciphering the best path forward, such as how we use our personal protective equipment.” He added that the board was generous in providing whatever the staff needed, including UV devices and sprays. “We wear masks on every call, and if a person has any symptoms, there are tiers of layers that we (add),” said Fisher. While Fisher is glad that the staff is safer, he acknowledges that changes interfere with the connection to community members. “When you put on your gloves, mask, and goggles, you lose that,” he said. “Our volunteers (and staff) do this to help people. We are surrounded by an unbelievable community.” Each January, the association offers area residents a chance to become more educated in the field of emergency medicine. “We do our own EMT program every year,” said Fisher. “That’s a lot of work, but it’s a team effort.” Readers who would like to learn more about the ambulance association may visit www.newholland ambulance.com.

Fisher estimates the New Holland and Leola stations together will answer close to 4,000 calls during 2020. Fisher explained a bit about how the stations are staffed. “To have the ambulance leave the station for a call, you need one emergency medical technician (EMT) and one first responder, but all our volunteers and staff are at least EMTs,” he said, adding that the next level up from EMT is advanced medical technician (AMT). The top level is a paramedic. “ We have six ambulances,” Fisher noted, “two at Leola and four (in New Holland at 101 E. Even with all the leadership work he (provides), Darrell is willing to fill a position on the ambulance when needed.” Horning also mentioned Fisher’s service as a member of the Lancaster County EMS Council. “I live in the area, so I help out,” said Fisher modestly.
