In 1964, the Walt Disney company introduced the world to its version of the magical nanny Mary Poppins, who is “practically perfect in every way.” The movie “Mary Poppins” was based on P.L. Travers book of the same name.

Now, Cavod Theatre invites audiences to experience anew the story of the “practically perfect” caregiver’s transformative visit to the Banks family. Directed by Jaime Hilton, the show will be presented at the Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, with a dinner theater at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18. The show will also be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Oct. 19 and 26; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays Oct. 20 and 27.

A play on perfection

Cavod to produce “Mary Poppins”

Set in early 20th-century London, “Mary Poppins” introduces the mysterious title character, played by Sophia Grado, who appears seemingly out of nowhere with the intention of bringing order to chaos with an “element of fun.”

Mary’s unique blend of magic with a no-nonsense attitude captivates

the Banks children - Michael, played by Foster Harris, and Jane, played by Gracelyn Fulmer - as she takes them on adventures featuring a cast of characters, including her friend, Bert, the

chimney sweep, played by Caleb Zimmerman.

To help prepare her cast of more than 30 adults and children, Hilton dug into the meaning of the word “perfect,” noting that she

does not view “perfect” to mean that something is without flaws. “(I believe it means) to be mature and complete and that is what Mary Poppins brings to this very disordered home.”

Lucas Clawson, historian with the Hagley Museum in Wilmington, Del., has spent more than 17 years learning all he can about the DuPont company and the family that founded the chemical giant in 1802. “There’s a lot to the story about why they came here and got to be where they are,” noted Clawson.

Clawson will present “DuPont - How the Company Started, Was Established, and Thrived” in the chapel at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave.,

Back in 2018, Garden Spot Village (GSV) built its first cooperative living house, Thistledown I, along Ranck Road, New Holland. The house, which provides shelter for five with private bedrooms and a common living space, was constructed utilizing volunteer labor and donated building supplies whenever possible. Chet Yoder, GSV director of pastoral services, reported that the house quickly attracted interested renters. “It’s

been full,” noted Yoder. “There’s not a lot of turnover, and when there’s a vacancy, there’s a waiting list.” The high demand has resulted in the planned construction of a second house.

To build Thistledown I, GSV staff members turned to GSV residents under the coordination of Larry Knepper, Revelations of Freedom Ministries participants, and students from local colleges, along with professional builders. Initially, COVID-19 restrictions delayed the start of Thistledown II, but in 2023, discussion was

The role of a home health aide

Caregivers come from all walks of life. Doctors and nurses may be the frontline medical providers people encounter most frequently, but plenty of others do their part to maintain the well-being of individuals. Among these caregivers are home health aides.

Home health aides, sometimes called personal care aides, assist people with activities

of daily life. An aide typically helps a person who may need assistance with tasks he or she cannot perform due to illness or disability. The aides may work in a person’s home, in a group home, or in another care facility.

living SENIOR Riding in style: Golf cart accessories

AARP says home health aides are considered health care paraprofessionals and must meet established training requirements, which vary by location.

Their duties may include assistance with personal care, such as dressing, toileting, feeding, and moving from a bed to a chair; checking vital signs; monitoring a client; light housekeeping; meal planning and cooking; picking up prescriptions; and providing companionship. Aides typically will not provide skilled nursing care and may not be able to offer recommendations on treatment or medications.

Individuals can enlist the services of home health aides who work independently or are placed through agencies. Sometimes a doctor or hospital has connections to aide services and can make referrals. It can be useful to interview several potential aides to find one who will fit with the needs and personality of the person requiring assistance. A good aide is compassionate, patient, and flexible. As illness or injury also can affect a person’s mood, aides must be able to adjust if a client is reluctant to receive help or is depressed or anxious from his or her limitations.

Home health aides serve an important role in the health care community by providing care and companionship to those who can no longer live independently.

Golf carts are not necessarily reserved for those hitting the links. While it’s true that a cart makes it easier for golfers to travel around a course, the vehicles are popular in and around many residential neighborhoods as well.

Global Market Insights says the golf cart market was valued at $2.5 billion in 2023, with an estimated growth of more than 7.5% expected between 2024 and 2032. The carts are regularly used in residential communities, on university campuses, at campgrounds, and in small towns. Many homes in suburban communities, like those being built in Texas, Florida, and Georgia, now boast additional, smaller garages designed specifically for golf carts. Designated golf cart parking also has turned up in town centers and

other retail locations across the country.

As more people rely on golf carts as a second vehicle, outfitting a cart with the right gear can help it stand out.

- Cover: For those without the benefit of a special garage for the cart, a golf cart cover protects the vehicle against sun and weather damage. Look for a cover that is water-repellent.

- Cup holders: Whether they are for a morning cup of coffee or an insulated water tumbler, cup holders are an important feature on a golf cart. Many cup holders attach easily to the rear accessory bar and elsewhere.

- Upgraded tires: Tires that come standard on most golf carts are not the most durable, according to Matt’s Custom Golf Carts. Replacing the tires with ones designed for the terrain the cart will travel the most can be a wise investment.

- New lighting: Improve on visibility and style by customizing lighting accessories on the golf cart. Many carts are being used to get around town, so it pays to have brighter headlights to see roadways and increase the cart’s visibility to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.

- Anti-slip mats: These mats can help ensure passengers stay safe and secure when stepping in and out of the golf cart, particularly on rainy days. Custom floor mats are available so people can put even more style into their ride.

- Side mirrors: Improve on safety with the addition of side mirrors. Icon Electric Vehicles says most factory golf carts feature only one small, center-mounted mirror so drivers can view the roadway behind them. While adequate for the golf course, a one-mirror setup may not be safe for the open road. Adding side mirrors can help to elevate the safety factor.

- Tinted windshield: Some golf carts do not come with windshields. The addition of one, particularly a tinted version, can help reduce glare and protect against debris and bugs while driving.

- Rear flip seat kit: This kit increases the seating capacity of the golf cart. When not in use, the seat can be flipped down to carry cargo.

- Speakers: Adding speakers to a golf cart can make the ride even more enjoyable. Bluetooth speakers may not require any special wiring and can work with a smartphone. Golf carts are turning up outside of golf courses, making them a go-to second vehicle for people in various communities. Accessorizing a golf cart can improve the driving experience.

The musical is known for more than 20 numbers, a few of which feature show-stopping dancing and choreography. Well-known tunes will include “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” “Jolly Holiday,” “A Spoonful of Sugar,” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.”

“The music is delightful,” noted Hilton. “The dance numbers are fun.” Hilton said she recently attended a high-energy choreography rehearsal. “I walked in and they were dancing, and I broke into a smile,” she said. “The music gets into your soul, and I just love it.”

Hilton pointed out that staging a show that is so well known presents difficulties in that audiences are accustomed to the special effects of the Disney movies. “The biggest challenge is the magic,” pointed out Hilton. “People come expecting (Mary Poppins) to fly.” Hilton noted that the story in the live

from pg 1

show differs somewhat from the movie. “There are slightly different characters, but we are finding ways to keep it magical, surprising, and fresh.”

According to Hilton, Mary Poppins’ effect on the Banks’ home extends beyond her relationship with the children. “Mr. Banks (played by Jordan Ave), and Mrs. Banks (played by Eliza Moran) are trying to grow up,” she noted, explaining the couple is torn between societal expectations and their own more imaginative personalities. “Mary brings this balance of order, along with creativity and connection.”

Hilton would like to see attendees leave with renewed spirits. “I want audiences to walk away feeling hopeful that what is broken can be restored,” she stated.

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.

Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.

Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country:

1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.

2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.

3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.

Sincerely, Anonymous Amishman from Wayne County, Ohio

Ephrata Cloister sets dumpling sale, concerts

Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will hold its annual apple dumpling sale on Friday, Oct. 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. until sold out.

Proceeds will go to the Back to the Cloister Fund, which allows the Cloister museum to compete with private collectors and other institutions on the open market for original items made at the Cloister. Over the years, proceeds from the apple dumpling sale have been used to purchase oneof-a-kind furniture, rare music manuscripts, and the original 1739 deed to the historic site. More than 100 items have been purchased since the creation of the fund more than 40 years ago. This year, the Back to the Cloister Fund purchased a Jacob Gorgas tall case clock that was made around the 1790s in the Gorgas

shop in Ephrata. The clock will be displayed in the Visitor Center at the Cloister.

The apple dumplings, made by Achenbach’s in Leola, will be available for a fee per dumpling at the drive-through tent beside the museum store at the Historic Ephrata Cloister. The sale will take place rain or shine. Interested individuals are encouraged to make their purchases early. Preorders can be made by visiting https://ephratacloister .org and looking under “Events.” Free delivery is available for preorders of 20 or more dumplings delivered within 10 miles of the Ephrata Cloister. Contact ephratacloister@gmail.com to make delivery arrangements. No admission to the museum is required to purchase apple dumplings.

The museum store, featuring

locally made crafts, art, books, and one-of-a-kind items, will be open both days and will feature a selection of specialty goods.

For more information about apple dumpling sales or to learn more about the historic site, contact the Ephrata Cloister at 717-733-6600 or visit the aforementioned website.

Additionally, community members are invited to celebrate the musical heritage of Ephrata on Sunday, Oct. 13, by attending concerts at the Ephrata Cloister.

Music played a central role in the spiritual life of Ephrata Cloister in the 18th century. The community is home to some of the earliest documented music by woman composers in America, as discovered in a 1739 manuscript titled “Zionitischer Weyrauchs H√ºgel.” Attendees of the concerts will hear some of

these compositions, along with pieces from other early American religious groups, including the Shakers and Moravians.

The Ephrata Cloister Chorus will perform in the historic 1741 Saal (Meetinghouse) at 1:30, 2:30, and 3:30 p.m. Flutist Glenn Fisher will be featured in the Saal at 1 and 3 p.m. Faith and Mercy Martin will play music on the harpsichord and violin in the Visitor Center auditorium at 1, 2, and 3 p.m.

Seating for performances is limited and available on a firstcome, first-served basis. Tickets can be purchased at the Visitor Center front desk on the day of the event and include access to all performances and the historic grounds. Admission is free for children age 5 and under and members of the Ephrata Cloister Associates.

New Holland, on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. as a guest of the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS).

“(The presentation) covers roughly the first 100 years of the family and how they got to the U.S.,” said Clawson. “It’s an interesting story.” Clawson’s knowledge about the DuPonts has been significantly enriched by his association with the Hagley Museum, where he originally served as an intern. Clawson explained that the museum came into existence as a result of the company’s celebrating its 150th anniversary in 1952. “The museum is dedicated to American business and industry,” stated Clawson. “What better company to do that than DuPont, and what

better place than where (the company) started?” The Hagley Museum is located on the site of DuPont’s first black powder manufacturing facility in Wilmington. “I know a lot about how things blew up - bang! - in the 19th century,” said Clawson with a chuckle.

According to Clawson, working at the former site came naturally to a young man whose father was an explosives expert with the Army.

“I thought everybody’s dad blew up things in the backyard for fun,” noted Clawson, who journeyed from western North Carolina to Delaware to attend the University of Delaware.

Hagley first opened as a museum in 1957, with the organi-

zation’s research library coming on board in 1961. “Our collecting focus started with the DuPont company here on the Brandywine and the people who lived and worked here,” Clawson explained, adding that over time the focus expanded to American business and industry and to technology and industrial designs. “We have records of more than 1,000 U.S. businesses and trade associations,” he pointed out. Clawson is happy to share his knowledge of DuPont with audiences. “It has been an interesting journey of discovery for me to figure out what the company is all about and how it became what it was known as in the 19th and 20th century,” he said, adding that most people have some familiarity with

the company. “There isn’t much in life that DuPont hasn’t interacted with in some way,” he said, “(but) it’s not the company you think it is.”

The presentation is free and open to the public. More information about NHAHS may be found at https://nhhistorical.com or by searching for “New Holland Area Historical Society” on Facebook.

underway. By August of this year, a concrete foundation for the building had been poured. “The idea all along was to have multiple houses,” explained Yoder, who noted the four finished buildings will face a common outdoor area to encourage neighborly interaction.

Now, Thistledown II volunteer coordinator Kevin Ressler is looking for volunteers with training and experience in the skilled trades to help complete the home. “There are a lot of willing hands, but people don’t always know where to serve,” explained Ressler, who noted he is in need of carpenters, electricians, plumbers, roofers, and individuals who know how to install HVAC systems. He is also hoping businesses that specialize in those areas will be willing to donate employee hours to help complete the work.

“It’s a great opportunity to connect persons who want to serve with a ministry that is in turn serving persons (in need of affordable housing),” said Yoder.

Wendy Nagle, GSV chief of mission advancement, said that fundraising to cover the second building has been ongoing since Thistledown I was completed. “We’ve raised about $250,000 so far,” Nagle said, noting funds

have come from grants and contributions by GSV residents. “Our residents have been very engaged,” she pointed out, adding that special events, including a yearly giving day for GSV residents, have been held.

“As we step into the process of building, we are talking to vendors who might want to be involved,” Nagle stated, adding that monetary gifts will be accepted along with gifts of labor and products, such as lumber, carpet, cabinets, HVAC system parts, and roofing materials. “We

often talk about gifts of time, treasure, and talent,” said Nagle. “This is a project where that is very true.” Nagle spoke of GSV residents who do not have construction skills, but help build the Cooperative Living Fund by making phone calls to potential donors.

According to GSV chief operating officer Steve Muller, organizers of the project hope to see it completed by the summer of 2025. “The first (cooperative living house) has been very

successful, and we are thankful for that,” Muller said. He noted that organizers believed the model would work and that they were pleased to see how the marketplace responded and that the maintenance of the house was manageable. “We have a waiting list of folks interested in Thistledown II,” he added.
