New Holland CROP Walk Slated By Ann Mead Ash
At a recent meeting of the New Holland Area CROP Walk committee, Kris Poontajak, pastor of Cedar Grove Church, and fellow committee member Nancie Weaver considered a reason for walking that might surprise some area residents. “Money doesn’t only provide food,” said Nancie. “Some of it goes to digging wells to provide water for agriculture so people can help themselves.” Kris, who co-coordinates the CROP Walk effort with George Weaver, added, “Clean water produces a clean environment. We want to emphasize (that the fundraiser helps provide) clean water.” In some countries, people travel an average of 6 kilometers to obtain clean water. CROP is sponsored by Church World Service (CWS), and Patrick Walker, See CROP Walk pg 5
Fall 5K Will Include New GOTR Team Open Race Will Welcome Area Runners By Ann Mead Ash
Looking forward to walking to raise funds to fight hunger in the New Holland Area CROP Walk are (from left) Karen Glaser, Anne Weaver, Nancie Weaver, George Weaver, and Kris Poontajak. The walk will begin at New Holland Community Park at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 21.
One aspiration of the Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster chapter is to make inclusion a priority of the program. “Our goal is to provide access (to the program) by (making) GOTR available where girls gather after school, which is not always at school,” explained GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson. “Many times that’s in community organizations like Boys and Girls Club,” said Johnson. “We will be inclusive in ensuring that all girls feel the curriculum is relevant and reflects their life experience and that all girls feel listened to, valued, and part of a team.” See Fall 5K pg 2
665 W. Main St., New Holland, will present “Tilly,” a stage adaptation by Henry O. Arnold of Frank Peretti’s novel of the same name, on Fridays, Oct. 12 and 19, at 7 p.m.; Saturdays, Oct. 13 and 20, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sundays, Oct. 14 and 21, at 4 p.m. A portion of all ticket sales will go to Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services. The organization’s purpose is to declare and demonstrate the transforming power of Christ and the sacredness of human life. To purchase tickets, readers may visit www.cavodacademy.com or call 717-354-3355. Tickets will also be available for purchase at the door. NEW BUILDING
Forgiven Worship Center, formerly located in the Intercourse Fire Company, will hold a grand opening at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14, in the church’s new building at 325 W. Main St., New Holland. Readers who would like more information may search for “Forgiven Worship Center” on Facebook.
Grant Street Dance To Present Anniversary Event At The Trust In 1998, Kim Jureckson was asked to teach a modern dance class to adults, and she had an epiphany. “I looked around, and there were beautiful dancers in this class,” recalled Jureckson. “They all had professional (dance) training … and I thought there should be opportunity for these people other than coming once a week to take a class.” Jureckson’s revelation eventually became Grant Street Dance Company, a multigenerational organization especially for sincere dancers who have not chosen dance as a career. “Once you pass 21, what does a dancer who has had serious training and chosen not to pursue that as a career do? You danced all your life and you love it. You are trained. You have ability,” noted Jureckson. On Saturday, Oct. 20, at 7:30 p.m.

With that in mind, a team of nine girls from the Lancaster Boys and Girls Club began meeting on Sept. 10, and the group will take part in its first 5K when GOTR Lancaster holds its fall run at Millersville University on Saturday, Nov. 10, beginning at 9 a.m. Registration for the untimed run in the Pucillo Gymnasium will begin at 7 a.m. GOTR kicked off its fall season on Sept. 4 with 61 teams and 800 girls meeting in every school district in the county. Jessica Wilson, who has coached the Blue Ball Elementary team, said that this year’s 5K will include a variety of activities for the girls and their running buddies. “The presenting sponsor, (a local) orthopedic and physical therapy practice, will create a temporary tattoo that reflects GOTR and the fall 5K,” said Wilson. In addition, the primping items that the girls may use before the race will include colored hair spray, face paint crayons, and bracelets they can inscribe. Wilson noted that Millersville University students take a special interest in the 5K. “All the Millersville University athletic teams send representatives on Saturday morning,” Wilson said. “As all the girls are running, (the Millersville students) will be cheering at the tops of their lungs or
forming tunnels with their hands for the girls to run through or creating a high-five line (for the runners).” Wilson noted that the Millersville students can provide a real boost. “A girl who is struggling with motivation will turn the corner and see that team and take off,” said Wilson. “It lifts the spirit.” Johnson noted that in addition, members of area high school clubs volunteer at the 5K. Johnson shared that GOTR staff members are pleased to welcome the new team from the Lancaster Boys and Girls Club to the program. “We are so excited to be branching out to a nontraditional site,” she stated, noting that the program is always mindful of physical and cognitive disabilities. “We will strive to provide curriculum modifications when needed, and we promise all girls will have a coach who has been trained to understand social context and create positive and inclusive environments and build genuine relationships.” Jennifer West, program director for GOTR Lancaster, expressed gratitude for those who volunteered to lead the Lancaster Boys and Girls Club team. “We have one staff member, one intern, and the father of a girl on another city team who stepped up to coach,” said West. “He saw the need, and we are really excited about that.”
Girls from every school district in the county are preparing to take part in the Girls on the Run 5K, which will be held at Millersville University on Nov. 10. The untimed 5K is open to area runners who would like to participate. Both West and Johnson hope to see more teams that meet outside the traditional sites take part in the program. “We want to be a reflection of the communities that we’re engaging,” said Johnson. “We invite the community (to let us know) if they have a spot where girls are gathering and want to start a team,” added West. Readers who wish to take part in the run may register via www.gotrlancaster.org/5K. Registration
will be discounted through Friday, Nov. 9. Discounts are also offered for running buddies and for children age 8 and under. Each GOTR participant who runs the 5K does so with a running buddy, who must be age 16 or older. Often, the buddy is a family member, but Wilson noted that volunteer running buddies are often needed. Individuals who would like to volunteer to be running buddies may visit www.gotrlancaster.org/ 5k#show-volunteer.

Fourth St., Denver. Gates will open at 5:45 p.m., and kickoff will be at 7 p.m. Fans of both teams are asked to bring unexpired, nonperishable food and personal care items to the game to donate to the CrossNet Food Pantry, now housed at 127 W. Franklin St., New Holland, and REAL Life Community Services of Denver. Those who attend the game and donate items for the food pantry will receive a free white T-shirt that reads “White Out Hunger.” Garden Spot High School students have opportunities to take part in the White Out prior to the start of the game. Amy Marburger, food and nutrition manager with CrossNet, is working with the school’s Student Council to collect food ahead of time, giving students a chance to earn T-shirts that they can then wear to the game. CrossNet and REAL Life are currently in need of specific items, including canned fruit, pancake mix, pancake syrup, canned pasta, spaghetti sauce, jelly, canned

In addition to food and toiletry items, monetary donations and checks made out to either ministry will also be accepted at the event. According to Marburger, the pantry can especially use personal care items, including toilet paper and feminine hygiene products, along with paper towels. In the past, REAL Life has used its portion of the donations to help stock the shelves for the Cocalico School District Power Packs Project. Power Packs Project provides families in need with recipes for low-cost meals, along with the ingredients needed, so that parents may feed their children over the weekend when school lunches are not available. The program also aims to help families learn to
cook their own affordable and nutritious meals. Marburger oversees the New Holland Power Packs program, which is administered through CrossNet. Dahl noted that recent statistics on the poverty rate in the New Holland area highlight the need for area residents to take part in the White Out. “In the ELANCO (School District) community, 44 percent of (children) are considered low income or in poverty,” said Dahl. “This statistic is just one marker that there are real and challenging needs in our community. We have to do everything we can to empower families and make sure food is in every home in the ELANCO community. Let’s White Out Hunger together!” Readers who would like to learn more about the White Out may visit https://elancocross.org. Individuals who have questions may call 717-355-2454.

Santiago has heard Ring speak several times now, and he recalls points from the story that continue to resonate with him. “When (Ring) was born, he didn’t breathe,” explained Santiago. Medical personnel, believing Ring was dead, ignored the baby for nearly 20 minutes. “That’s a miracle,” said Santiago. “Who doesn’t breathe for 20 minutes and lives?”

When Ring was orphaned, his older sister took him in. “(Ring’s) older sister was a believer, and she introduced him to the Lord,” noted Santiago. RTCM, located at 2324 Leaman Road, Lancaster, strives to help men who have been traumatized through abuse and who have turned to abusing chemicals or developed other kinds of addictions. RTCM aims to support clients in finding healing and developing healthy coping mechanisms. RTCM has graduated 10 students since February. At this time, six students live in the facility along with two graduates who are serving as interns and four live-in staff members. The facility can accommodate up to a dozen students. Santiago noted that one way the ministry helps students to beat addiction is through significant amounts of Bible study and training. “We have a track record of working toward a minimum of 20 hours a week of either spiritual or life skill classes with the men in this house,” said Santiago. “In a month’s time, that is 80 hours of discipleship classes.” According to Santiago, the banquet will start off with appetizers, followed by a salad bar. The main meal will include broasted chicken, barbecued pork, green beans, mashed potatoes, and macaroni and cheese. A dessert bar will offer guests a variety of sweet treats from which to choose. A Chinese auction that will be part of the banquet will include up to a half-dozen items. Special music will be provided by Jameson Road Band. Business and table sponsorships for the event are available. Tickets are required to attend the banquet. Seating is limited, and tickets must be purchased by Monday, Oct. 15. A freewill offering will be received at the event. Readers who would like to learn more about RTCM may visit www.restartministry.org. Those who would like to sponsor a table or register to attend the banquet may call 717-304-3291 or email officemanager@restart ministry.org.

Pastor Jaime Santiago, executive director and founder of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), has known speaker David Ring for more than a decade. “I met David Ring in 2005 at the Sanford Teen Challenge in Sanford, Fla.,” recalled Santiago. “I was the director of education there when he came to speak.” Santiago had heard of Ring through the church community, and he was so impressed with Ring’s story that he remembered it and kept Ring in mind when he was in need of a speaker for the third annual RTCM fall banquet on Monday, Nov. 5, at Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open for fellowship and appetizers at 5:30 p.m.,
and the meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. Ring, who was born with cerebral palsy, became an orphan at the age of 14. He endured ridicule and embarrassment because of his disabilities, but Ring found acceptance and self-respect after beginning a relationship with Christ, which has sustained him and allowed him to overcome in spite of his circumstances. Ring has shared his story with thousands of

senior community engagement specialist for CWS, along with Kris, Nancie, George and his wife, Anne, hopes to see 100 walkers at this year’s event slated for Sunday, Oct. 21, at the New Holland Community Park, in the 400 block of Jackson Street, New Holland, beginning at 1:30 p.m. According to Kris, the fundraiser offers several ways to participate. Preregistered walkers and cyclists may check in at the Rotary Pavilion prior to the walk. Registration on the day of the walk will begin at the pavilion at 1 p.m. Walkers and runners may complete a 3-mile or 6-mile route throughout Garden Spot Village (GSV), which is located adjacent to the park. Nancie noted that cyclists may complete either a 3- or 9-mile route, which will leave the GSV campus. “(Cyclists) must have a helmet and wear closed-toed shoes,” Nancie said. New Holland churches that will participate in the walk in addition to Cedar Grove include Trinity Lutheran, New Holland Mennonite, St. John Center Lutheran, Ranck’s United Methodist, Garden Spot Community Church, and Our Lady of Lourdes. Leola-area churches that will participate include Zion Lutheran of Leola, Forest Hills Mennonite of Leola, and Leola United Methodist. Members or friends of one of those churches may contact the church’s designated CROP Walk recruiter to register for the fundraiser. Readers may also preregister at www.crophungerwalk.org by searching for “New Holland Area CROP Walk.” Kris said that the fundraiser will begin with an opening prayer at 1:30 p.m. and then bicycles will leave just prior to walkers. One member of the committee who walks will carry a special staff decorated with bells. George will designate the person who will carry the staff. “We will have eight bells on the walking staff,” said Kris. According to Patrick, the bells have special meaning. “Each bell represents five years,” Patrick explained. “We used to give these out to be added to the walking sticks in recognition of a five year anniversary.” Patrick added that the bells are specially made for CROP. “These are ‘shells to bells’ - mines and military weapons that have been melted down to be cast into bells,” he said. “They are bells of peace, bells that sing out for safe conditions, bells that ring with compassion.” Last year’s walk attracted 75 participants and raised nearly $11,000. This year, organizers hope to raise $15,000. “Over (the) 40 years (New Holland has held a walk), we have raised $650,000,” said George. According to CWS, CROP funds can transform communities by bringing food and water to people in need. The availability of clean water is especially important because when individuals do not have to walk miles to obtain water, they can use the time to work, build a business, or take advantage of educational opportunities. Readers who have questions about the New Holland Area CROP Walk may call 717-355-2790 or Cedar Grove Church at 717-354-5573.

Grant Street self-produced a yearly concert under the umbrella of the New Movement Center of Lancaster, which was a local nonprofit organization. “We were the resident dance company,” recalled Jureckson. “We had a home and a rehearsal space.” When the New Movement Center closed and Grant Street lost its rehearsal space, Jureckson thought that season of her life might be over. “The dancers were not about to let the company fall apart,” said Jureckson.

“Grant Street was too important to them.” Jureckson said in the last 10 years, the company has not done full concerts. Rather it has done small performances in other shows. Garden Spot Field Hockey Posts Three Shutout Week by Ara Grigorian
The Garden Spot field hockey team dominated its opponents this past week, improving to 10-4-1 on the year as the regular season enters its final week. Garden Spot has three games in its final week, including matches against the two teams ahead of the Spartans in the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two standings. “We have Donegal and Manheim Central this week and that will really determine where we’ll finish,” said head coach Katy Eby. The Spartans took care of Solanco on the road Monday afternoon, posting the first of their three shutouts on the week. In fact, by blanking Elizabethtown on Wednesday and McCaskey on Friday, the string of shutouts went to four straight games. “Lauren Delgado has six shutouts so far this year,” Eby pointed out. “That’s really significant because we only had five wins all of last year. She has been working hard at where she needs to be and communicating with the defense.” In the victory over Solanco, Delgado recorded three saves. On offense, the Spartans were sparked early on with goals by Madison
Casey, Carysse Norris, Sophie Torrance and Aubry Gonzalez. In fact, the team was ahead 4-0 not quite 15 minutes in. Norris scored 3:20 into the contest and Casey scored her first goal of the match only 34 seconds later. Gonzalez, who also recorded three assists on the day, made it 3-0 at the 6:09 mark and Torrance added a fourth goal at the 14:40 juncture. She too would go on to score a second goal in the 6-0 win. “It’s great to see the girls get off to a fast start,” Eby said. “The team seems to play better when we’re ahead, so we work with the girls on getting the ball into the offensive circle and to score as quickly as possible. We had three or four goals within the first 15 minutes of this game.” Casey made it 5-0 in the 18th minute. Eby talked about the valueadded offensive input Casey brings. “She’s a senior, rotating on the forward line,” the coach said. “She seems to have found her coordination better and been more successful with where she needs to be. “She is in position and ready for rebounds,” Eby added. “She is now getting more touches to redirect the ball toward the cage if, for instance, a shot bounces off the goalie’s pads.” Amelia Mercado, Megan Esh and

Karynne Henry each notched one assist. Torrance scored the lone goal of the second half. “She also rotates her starting position with or two of the other forwards,” Eby said. “Sophie is very fast and has been consistent with our offensive corners. “We seem to be doing very well with our corners, getting off good shots,” she added. In the Elizabethtown game on Wednesday, the Gonzalez and Amanda Leeland each scored twice with Gonzalez also dishing out an assist. There were nine more Spartans involved in the scoring as Garden Spot posted a 10-0 victory. Mercado, Henry, Torrance and Casey each had one goal as did Lauren Esh and Megan Esh. There were two

He passed for 250 yards, with Leeland capitalizing twice - once hitting Livingston for four TD’s and in each half. She scored off assists by Erin Gonzalez and Aubry Gonzalez. Garden Spot’s 10-4-1 record has the team ninth in the District Three Class-AA power rankings, shaded by a slim margin by eighthplace Lampeter-Strasburg (10-4-0). FOOTBALL In a Section Two road game on Friday night, the Garden Spot football team was unable to battle back from an early three-touchdown deficit, losing to Elizabethtown 65-28. The Spartans were relentless in engineering offensive drives and finally scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter after a 49-12 halftime deficit could have caused most teams to give up. Zeb Fisher put the Spartans on the scoreboard with a 64-yard scoring dash in the first quarter, making it a combined 27-point opening period. The Bears’ special teams also hurt Garden Spot. In the second quarter, after the first of two TD’s by the Spartans - John Dykie’s 40-yard pass from Fisher - Rice ran the kickoff back 78 yards for a score. Fisher duplicated the feat with another 64-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter. He also converted the two-point conversion, and ran for a 22-yarder followed by Dykie’s two-point PAT. On the night, Fisher finished with 199 rushing yards on 19 carries, scoring three touchdowns. Dykie
compiled 66 rushing yards and caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Fisher (5-for-11, 80 yards). The Spartans fell to 0-7 on the year (0-4 in league) while Elizabethtown improved to 4-3, 2-2. Next up for the Spartans is a road game against Section Two foe Cocalico on Friday. GIRLS’ SOCCER Following their 2-1 defeat of Twin Valley on Monday, the Spartans played to consecutive draws in girls’ soccer action. On Tuesday, they tied Elizabethtown on the road 1-1 and on Friday, they hosted Lampeter-Strasburg, playing to a scoreless draw. Spot out-shot Twin Valley 15-10 in Monday’s non-league contest. Erna Hamzic scored both goals, evening the score in the 11th minute of the match and scoring the eventual game-winner 19 minutes into the

from its origins in Heidelberg Township, Berks County. For many years it was the Heidelberg Polka Band. The group changed its name to the Heidelberg Brass Band to reflect the songs of other genres it sometimes plays, such as the “Blue Skirt Waltz” and “Iowa Brigade Band March.” The band’s brass instruments include four trumpets, a tuba, a baritone and a trombone. Glen A. Beard Sr. is the drummer. A Lutheran minister, Glen A. Beard Jr. of Ephrata, is the band manager, sings, sometimes fills in on the drums, and adds humor and commentary at the band’s performances. Admission to the Oct. 14 show is free. Refreshments will be provided. Donations to the Eicher Arts Center will be accepted.

PENNYSAVER - Garden Spot Edition - October 10, 2018 - 19
By Ann Mead Ash
Tracey Strohecker, Annie Friedrichs, and other members of the Lancaster Christian Women’s Club first heard of a Stonecroft Ministries event called Story Marks two years ago, and the women were intrigued. “Story Marks (is about) women and the stories behind their tattoos,” explained Strohecker. “It will be a one-night gallery experience featuring photographs of local women and the stories of their hearts.” On Thursday, Oct. 18, area women are invited to the Barn at Overlook Commons, 605 Granite
Run Drive, Lancaster, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to view the photos of up to 30 local women and to hear the testimonies of up to 10 women and how their tattoos are an expression of their Christian journeys. Light fare will be served. The photographs that will be displayed were taken by photographer Sally Krueger, who donated the photo sessions to the event and who will gift them to those who volunteered to be photographed. Friedrichs said that at the heart of the event is a passion to reach young women who do not know Jesus. “This is about meeting a girl where she is and as she is with support and encouragement,” said Friedrichs. For Strohecker, the 24 months since she first heard of Story Marks has represented a

personal journey that highlights a significant change in her outlook. When she first heard of Story Marks, she was skeptical of the idea. “The Lord began to work in my heart about being judgmental,” said Strohecker, who said that a sermon her pastor preached in the fall of 2017 on the subject of prejudices also affected her. “The Lord really spoke to me,” said Strohecker, who remembered Story Marks at that time. “I felt so convicted and passionate about this,” she added, noting that during a February vacation to Florida she decided to get a tattoo of two intertwining hearts and the words “Endless Love” to honor her marriage of more than 50 years. The transformation of Strohecker’s viewpoint has given her greater understanding for the reasons many women have tattoos. “I always

thought it was about rebellion,” said Strohecker. “That was my perception. Once I understood there is a story behind them, I could see there’s a significant meaning.” One goal of the event is to convey the message that tattoos are more than skin deep. “When you put something permanently on your body, it’s not on your body, it’s on your heart,” said Friedrichs. “It’s tattooed on to who you are.” Another aim is to break down stereotypes and focus on the universal. “We want to literally share our stories to support and encourage one another,” explained Friedrichs. “We are coming together as sisters to share the love of Christ with a sense of community.” She hopes to change perceptions in the process. “This is about women loving and needing each other (because) we were put in this world to help each other and reach out to each other,” she said. “There’s no judgment or criticism (because) we all need Jesus.”
