A rose by any other name

Presentation will explore county connections between York and Lancaster

Lancaster

is known as the Red Rose City and York as the White Rose City, but the pair have more in common than just the iconic flower. “York and Lancaster are sister counties and sister cities,” said Dominish Miller. “The only thing that separates them is the Susquehanna River.”

“There are a lot of similar things with each of our counties,” stated Cory Van Brookhoven. “The Lincoln Highway, the Susquehanna River, Moravian heritage, (and more). This will all be discussed at the program.”

The program Van Brookhoven was referring to will be a presentation given by both Miller and Van Brookhoven at the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) meeting on Thursday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland.

Miller pointed out that both the city of York and the city of Lancaster were founded in the 1700s and that

both briefly served as the United States’ capital. She went on to note that she and Van Brookhoven each choose some of their favorite topics

Keeping the faith

Since the fall of 2022, David Kieffer, president of the FaithfulGive board, has been preparing for the organization’s first online giving event to benefit organizations with a Christian mission that are active in Lancaster County. “We prayed and thought and designed and listened for a year,” said Kieffer of FaithfulGive’s five-member board and its organizational team. “Mostly we listened to what would serve various nonprofit leaders.”

The result is a three-day online

giving event, which will take place in October. More than 40 local organizations have signed on to take part in the fundraiser, which will open just after midnight on Sunday, Oct. 15, and close at the end of the day on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

To introduce the event, a breakfast will be held on Monday, Oct. 16, at Westminister Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, beginning at 7:30 a.m. In addition, a short celebration picnic will be held on Oct. 17 at 5 p.m. at Long’s Park.

“There will be worship, celebration, and announcing prizes,” explained

to present when they speak together on the neighboring counties. “We go back and forth during our talk,” said Miller. “Naturally, we know

more about our own county/city but have done extensive research on both.”

“We do it a little different each

time,” explained Van Brookhoven. “We break it down by topic, taking turns by subject.”

Miller said that to make the presentation more audience-friendly, the two use a conversational style, and they bring in current events. “We don’t just give the audience a history lesson,” she said. “We also cover things that are happening in Lancaster and York today, like the Fire & Ice Festival in Lititz and the Sasquatch 5K in Mount Wolf.”

Miller also called York the “Snack Food Capital of the World,” while Van Brookhoven broadened that area to cover central Pennsylvania. “We not only discuss the history connection, but we also talk about snacks and chocolate,” he said.

Van Brookhoven is the full-time president of the Lititz Historical Foundation, which is located at 137-145 E. Main St., Lititz. The Lititz native volunteered with the foundation for many years prior to taking the position. His initial interest in Lititz history came from See NHAHS pg 4

A ride to work

About 200 individuals with disabilities participate with Lighthouse Vocational Services (LVS), 144 Orlan Road, New Holland. Of those, 150 require transportation from multiple areas of the countyfrom Manheim to south of Quarryville. Organizing all those rides to work is Sandy Miller, transportation coordinator for LVS. The organization provides vocational services for individuals with disabilities.

About a year ago, Brian French, LVS director of programs, approached Miller with a request.

Awards given at the picnic will include prizes that participating organizations will compete for from 7 a.m.

to 7 p.m. each day of the event. Prize categories are the Engaged Donor prize to benefit smaller organizations; the Show Me the Money prize for the largest unique donation; a prize package from Masterpiece Marketing, which will be awarded based on a written submission; and the Just Keep Swimming award, which will be awarded by the board based on nominations by donors who submit a paragraph about why an organization has demonstrated wisdom, love, and persistent courage in challenging circumstances. Nominations for the Just Keep Swimming award are open at https://faithfulgive.org/prizes/.

Kieffer pointed out that the first day of the event will not be focused on giving, although the platform will be available. “It’s really a day of prayer,” he said, noting that prayer guides will be distributed to various churches that are helping FaithfulGive to spread the word. “(The guide) will enable people to learn about the organizations and pray for them,” Kieffer said.

Kieffer said that the decision to start FaithfulGive was motivated by the many Kingdom-minded organizations located in the county. “This is really a movement of people who live locally who recognize that Lancaster has a rich heritage of biblically faithful nonprofit organizations founded to reflect and live out biblical convictions in every area of life,” he said. “This was started by those who want to celebrate those organizations, nurture their vision, and guard it for the next generation.”

Looking ahead, Kieffer noted that he would love to see the giving event raise $500,000 or more. “Our goal is to bless this community,” he said. “This is really a labor of love,” he noted, adding that neither he nor the other board members - who include vice president Lynette Morales, secretary Jim Adams, treasurer Steve Bucklen, and member at large Kurt Weaverare salaried.

Cruise to the Forge to feature car show, live music and food

Historic Poole Forge will present Cruise to the Forge, the site’s annual car, truck and bike show, on Sunday, Oct. 15, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. In addition to the display of vehicles of all makes and models, the event will include food, live music, a silent auction and a craft show. The site’s mansion will also be open for self-guided tours.

Vehicle owners will be asked to pay a registration fee. Spectators will be admitted free of charge.

A highlight of the day is when vehicles enter the car show and drive over the site’s covered bridge, which crosses the Conestoga River. A professional photographer will take photos, which will be available for purchase.

“Last year, we had over 100 vehicles,” said Dawn Ekdahl, Poole Forge executive director, noting that local car clubs also participate.

Judging for the top five cars will be at 2:30 p.m. The prizes will be framed prints of the covered bridge. “We don’t do categories; we just have the top five cars,” Ekdahl explained. “A lot the car enthusiasts love to come into Poole Forge because it’s not (limited) to a parking lot. With us, we have beautiful backdrops with the fall trees. Photo opportunities are endless.”

The silent auction items have been donated by local businesses. “We will

have gift baskets, including a car wash gift basket,” Ekdahl said, noting that the silent auction will close at 2 p.m.

DJ Jay Matteson will provide music, and there will be a performance by the band Forgiven, which is appearing at the event for the first time. The band will perform on the mansion porch. “They play oldies, contemporary, rock and jazz,” Ekdahl said, adding that members of the band will also show their cars, including a 1933 Studebaker St. Regis.

Coffee and hot food, including french fries, will be for sale by Schaeffer Catering from Reading. “They are known for their specialty grilled cheese sandwiches,” Ekdahl noted.

“We also have Suzi’s Homemade Soups. She (will offer) smoked chicken corn chowder.”

Locally made baked goods, including a variety of homemade pies, will also be for sale.

Visitors are welcome to stroll the gardens and grounds, and children may enjoy the site’s playground.

Historic Poole Forge is located at 1940 Main St., Narvon, along Route 23, 7 miles east of New Holland and 5 miles west of Morgantown. For more information about Cruise to the Forge, call 484-797-5302, email hpf1940@gmail.com or visit www.historicpooleforge.org or www.facebook.com/pooleforge.

Theodore “Teddy” Gray Rhoades

Theodore “Teddy” Gray Rhoades, 10, of Bowmansville, 5th-grader at Blue Ball Elementary School, and precious son of Matthew T. & Jaclyn M. (Zuzzio) Rhoades, passed away at Hershey Medical Center on Friday, September 29, 2023.

Teddy attended therapy at the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development. Teddy’s presence brough joy to all who were around him. It was evident that Teddy deeply loved his siblings. He had amazing teachers who worked with him every day, and in turn Teddy taught others too. He taught others patience and understanding. Teddy was recognized by many because he attended all the local community events and he loved to be at the Easter Egg hunts and Halloween gatherings. His family experienced the love of the Make A Wish Foundation when they took Teddy to Walt Disney World. Teddy saw the world not through his eyes, but through the touch, warmth, and kindness of his family, teachers, therapists, and friends. Teddy will forever be remembered as a special gift to all who had the privilege of spending time with him.

In addition to his parents, Teddy is survived by three siblings, Matlyn, Mary, & Austyn; grandparents, John & Christy Rhoades and Tom & Mary Zuzzio; Aunt & Uncles, Scott & Jennifer Rhoades, Stephanie & Kevin Scheffel, Zach & Michelle Zuzzio, Charlie & Sunshine Zuzzio, Tony & Carri Zuzzio, Kirstin Zuzzio & Josh Zarnoth; and 13 cousins, Conner, Jenner, Riley, A.J., Reagan, Zoe, Zach Jr., Tree, Penelope, Oliver, Jacob, Ben, and Anthony. “He said, ‘We are ramping up our program, and we need more cars,’” recalled Miller, who has a connection to Concordville Nissan in Glen Mills. Miller’s first move was to purchase three Rogues, but she went on to purchase a total of 12 vehicles to help participants to go into the community to work. “We have received grants for all these vehicles from multiple areas,” said Miller, who noted individual in grants of $25,000 helped her to purchase pre-owned certified vehicles. “Concordville Nissan believes in what we do,” explained Miller. “They work with us to keep (a vehicle purchase) within our grant budget.”

Participants who take part in two LVS programs are driven to community locations to work. “We have Small Group Employment (SGE),” said Miller, who noted that the program takes a group of participants to perform tasks such as

cleaning at a local business such as Conestoga Wood Specialties, Signature Custom Cabinetry, or Grocery Outlet Bargain Market. She added that LVS is looking for more local businesses to take part in this program.

A second program is called Community Participation Specialists (CPS). In CPS, participants visit nonprofits such as CrossNet, ReUzit on State in Ephrata, and Unto in Mount Joy. A group of participants called SHINE - Sharing Hope In Neighborly Encounters - makes lasagna in local church kitchens and then delivers meals to area residents who are struggling in some way.

“We need drivers,” noted Miller, who added that the ratio of one staff member to three participants is the norm. Drivers may start picking up participants as early as 5:30 a.m. “It’s not just driving,” noted Miller, who drives participants herself. “(A driver) may have to help the participant in, and buckle the seatbelt,” she said. “Some partici-

LVS is looking to expand its Strengthening Pathways program, which offers diverse adult education opportunities for the enhancement of individuals’ skills and quality of life. “We have a waiting list for participants,” said Miller, who added that the vocational rehabilitation program is expanding into Chester County, as well. “Two of the cars travel to Chester (County) to work with participants at jobs,” said Miller, whose affinity for the transportation piece is related to her work scheduling vehicles, checking pre-trip inspection reports, scheduling maintenance and inspections, and dealing with mechanical issues. Program to feature Native American-style canoe

Author and experimental archaeologist Robin Moore will bring his 13-foot birchbark canoe from Bucks County to the Eicher Arts Center, 409 Cocalico St., in Ephrata Borough’s Grater Park, on Sunday, Oct. 15. He will give a presentation from 2 to 4 p.m.

Made of birch bark covering cedar structures, birchbark canoes were developed hundreds of years ago by indigenous people in what is now Canada. The canoes were light enough to be carried on land to avoid the riskiest stretches of waterway. Moore noted that the area that is now Lancaster County probably lacked the trees most suitable for

the canoes’ construction, but tribes such as the Iroquois on Northern raids sometimes took birchbark canoes back with them to use in what is now the United States. European explorers praised the canoes, and fur traders used them extensively in both Canada and the United States.

Canvas, a manufactured fabric, has largely supplanted birch bark as a protective covering for canoes, but in the summer of 2022, Moore spent three weeks in a remote northern Ontario location building an Ojibway Longnose style birchbark canoe with instruction from Tom Byers, a master of the birchbark canoe building

craft. Byers is of French and Cree heritage and has built 98 birchbark canoes over the last 25 years. Working long days on a property with no electricity, power tools or internet access, Moore and Byers used an ax and a crooked knife to collect natural materials from the Canadian bush and build Moore’s watercraft.

A birchbark canoe built by Robin Moore and Tom Byers will be the focus of a presentation at the Eicher Arts Center.

In addition to the canoe, Moore will display scale models of traditional styles of birchbark watercraft and samples of roots of Northern

Ephrata Cloister sets Community Day program

In the 1700s, Historic Ephrata Cloister was the town of Ephrata. Like any small village, it had craftsmen who wove cloth, baked bread and built houses. Ephrata also featured a printing office to produce books and a doc-

tor to care for the sick.

These and other 18th-century activities will come to life as part of Community Day, an interactive educational program set for Friday, Oct. 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program

is open to public and private schools, as well as homeschoolers. There will be an admission fee, with separate prices for students and for chaperones. Advance reservations are encouraged and can be made by calling the Ephra-

ta Cloister at 717-733-6600.

The hands-on program will offer at least a dozen different stations around the historic site, with each stop offering a 10- to 15-minute look at things such as lighting, clothing and writing in the 1700s community. Students will be free to travel in small groups with their chaperones in any order through the various interpretive stations.

A visit to the bakery will show that bread did not always come in plastic wrappers, and the carpenter will explain that that not all roof shingles are made the same. Students will also visit the doctor and the schoolhouse, where they will learn how to write on stone.

Historic Ephrata Cloister is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission with support from the Ephrata Cloister Associates. For more information, visit www.EphrataCloister.org.

Persons with disabilities who need special assistance or accommodation should call in advance to discuss their needs. Pennsylvania TDD relay service is available at 800-654-5984.

According to Robert Zorbaugh, chief executive officer of LCSWMA, the improper disposal of rechargeable batteries is putting trash haulers, waste disposal and recycling facilities, employees and the community at risk. Countless fires have started in the back of trash trucks and at waste disposal facilities.

Karen Gross, LCSWMA communications manager, would like the community to know that there are many free and convenient drop-off locations for end-of-life rechargeable batteries. In Lancaster County, residents can use LCSWMA’s drive-through Household Hazardous Waste Facility to dropoff both alkaline and rechargeable batteries.

For more details and to learn about other collection locations, visit www.SafeBattery Disposal.com. The webpage, available in English and Spanish, includes information regarding specialty batteries such as e-bike and electric vehicle batteries as well as battery handling tips.
