Pickin’ In The Park Moves To New Holland Ambulance Association Will Benefit From Event BY ANN MEAD ASH
hortly after Bryant Glick worked with Linda Dibartolo and Bill Heagy to organize the first Pickin’ in the Park event in Terre Hill in May, he began looking forward to the next one. “With the success of (the) spring (event), a number of people encouraged us to try to do another one this fall,” said Glick, who connected with New Holland Ambulance Association’s EMS chief, Darrell Fisher, to make the organization the beneficiary of the event. The second Pickin’ in the Park, which will include steak and chili cook-offs, public safety vehicles and New Holland first responders, food vendors, and live music, will be held in the New Holland Memorial Community Park, in the 400 block of Jackson Street, New Holland, on Saturday, Nov. 6, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free, and the event will be held rain or shine.
S
In a change from spring, the fall event will be about first responders and public safety with a family friendly focus similar to a touch-atruck event. “All the (local) emergency services will be involved,” said Fisher, who noted that New Holland Ambulance will bring an emergency vehicle for tours, and there will be handouts for children. The New Holland Police Department will be present, as will Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR). GSFR will bring the ladder truck for a candy scramble to be held at 1 p.m. “The Lancaster County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit will do a demonstration,” noted Glick. This event’s steak competition will be called “Raise the Steaks” and will feature more than 50 competitive grilling teams from the East Coast vying for a $1,000 first-place prize and a chance to qualify for the world championship in Texas in March 2022. The Steak Cookoff Association is the sanctioning body for the event.

“My whole objective is to bring awareness to the subject,” said Kristin Manser, author of the recently published book “The Invisible Bruise: Finding Freedom and Hope After an Emotionally Abusive Relationship, ” a story she wrote about her experience with this form of abuse. “It was really a dark time for me,” she recalled, adding that manipulation and gaslighting can be confusing and hard to explain.

Mike Caimi has always looked up to Vietnam War helicopter pilots. “They were kinda my heroes,” said Caimi, who admired the young American men for their ability to fly helicopters through the jungles of Southeast Asia. As an adult, he became friends with Jim Haga, a Vietnam Huey pilot who served two tours during the war. “We were talking about restoring a helicopter and getting it out in front of Vietnam veterans,” said Caimi, who worked with Haga and others to form the Liberty War Bird Association, which Caimi now serves as president. Heritage Day at Brubaker Homestead will take place on Saturday, Oct. 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will be held at the 1792 Brubaker Homestead in Brubaker Park, 414 Long Lane, East Earl. The event will be a celebration of the rich history of Lancaster County from the 18th-century frontier to the early 20th century.
Historical interpretation and hands-on family activities will offer learning experiences for children. The event will feature 1700s frontier life, a trapper camp, Civil War soldiers, an early 1800s family homestead, an indigenous Leni Lenape settlement, domestic and industrial crafts and processes, artisans, historical interpreters, and reenactors from all over the region. Visitors can interact with the artisans, craftspeople, historians, musicians, and representatives of the various traditional trades. Youngsters can participate in the homestead scavenger hunt, play early American games, and create early toys and crafts. Family groups can register and compete in the
new Woods Walk where they can experience life in a trappers’ camp, participate in musket shooting, and compete in tomahawk throwing, archery, and more. Entering the 19th century, visitors will learn how to make paper, listen to storytelling, and learn about open-fire cooking. The early farmstead had to fulfill all its own needs. Artisans and interpreters will show how soap was made and hides were tanned. Visitors will learn how bread was baked in an outdoor beehive oven and how cooking was done in the homestead kitchen fireplace. They will learn about spinning and weaving, talk with an early laundress and seamstress, and explore a country store.
Late 19th- and 20th-century industrial processes and equipment will be displayed and demonstrated. Everyone can meet the blacksmith and the metal casters and see early tractors. There will be plenty of oldfashioned foods, including open fire-cooked apple butter, homemade soups, chicken barbecue, hot dogs, snacks, baked goods, and more. At noon, a themed basket auction will be held. Admission and parking are free. This event is sponsored by the Pathways Community Homeschool in partnership with Brecknock Township. Having overcome her experience, Manser now has the goal of bringing hope to others. “With a topic like this, we need to stand up and attack it and bring it to light,” she said. That is exactly what Manser plans to do with two upcoming author talks. The first will be held at the Ephrata Public Library, 550 S. Manser said it took her a year to write the book, which grew out of journaling and working with a psychologist to dissect her experience. She said she has always been a person who journals regularly. “(Emotional abuse is) a tricky subject,” she said, not-

ing that other types of abuse receive more media attention, but she noted that emotional or psychological abuse can be dangerous as well. “It can cross the line and turn physical, or the person being abused can be so distraught they can hurt themselves,” she said, adding that it can be hard for an abused person to prove to others what is going on. “There’s a fear (in wondering), ‘ Will anyone believe me?’” she said. “That was a big part of my book,” she added. The cover of Manser’s book shows a beaten-down woman in tattered clothing with a tattered, red umbrella at her feet. In front of her is a mirror where the same woman is shown standing strong with the umbrella and a rainbow over her head. To create the
cover, Manser contacted Lancaster artist Liz Hess. “I have always really valued her work,” said Manser, who worked with Hess to visualize the cover, including the iconic red umbrella Hess is known for using in her work. “I asked for one of her red umbrellas to be crumpled and tattered symbolizing someone being beaten down by abuse, and she was totally on board,” shared Manser. The painting was auctioned to raise funds for the Domestic Violence Service Program (DVS) of Community Action Partnership. Manser is giving a percentage of her book sales to the same organization.
Manser has planned her author talks to be informal and relaxed events. “I will share a bit of my story and why I wrote the book,” she said. “The more we talk about it and set boundaries for these type of relationships … the more healing can happen,” she said, adding that she hopes to have a representative from DVS present. “Domestic Violence Awareness Month is October,” Manser noted, adding that DVS has a number of programs planned which may be found by visiting https://caplanc.org or by reading “Domestic Violence Services Plans Events” in this paper. For more information, please visit https://caplanc.org/dvam.

Garden Spot Boys’ Extend Win Streak to Seven
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
The Garden Spot boys’ soccer team proved that whether you score one goal or ten goals, a win is a win. Well, not that they were setting out to evolve an axiom that claims such things, but a pair of 1-0 victories sandwiched around a 10-1 trouncing of Solanco did extend the Spartans’ win streak to seven games and improved their record to 8-5-0. Coming off a 1-0 shutout win at Elizabethtown back on Wednesday, September 29, the Spartans played host to Solanco on Saturday afternoon, October 2. Three different Spartans - Luke Steiner, Keegan Redcay and Ibon Ibanez finished with two goals each. The first goal by Ibanez put the Spartans up 1-0. Trey Dwyer and Steiner increased it to 3-0. By halftime, Steiner and George Rohrbaugh had helped make it 6-0. By game’s end, Emir Hamzic and Gavin Andrews had each netted one goal. Andrews, Rohrbaugh and Justin Minger each dished out one assist while Jace Weaver was credited with two. Josh Martin handled the goalkeeping duties, making one save for the Spartans. Garden Spot improved to 5-3-0 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League with the 1-0 victory at home over McCaskey on Monday, October 4. Redcay scored off a Dwyer assist eight minutes into the
match. The defense held the Red Tornado scoreless for the match. FIELD HOCKEY The Garden Spot defense has been stingy of late, helping the team hang on to first place (8-1-0) in the Section Three field hockey standings. Garden Spot improved to 11-2-0 overall with its 5-0 defeat of Section three foe Solanco on the road, Tuesday afternoon, October 4. The Spartans spaced out their scoring with Erin Gonzalez scoring twice in the second quarter and once more in the fourth quarter for a hat trick, and with Melanie Esh and Lauren Horning both scoring in the third stanza. Gonzalez was part of each score in the 5-0 win, providing assists for Esh and Horning while Horning added an assist as well. Bryna Kelly was tested once in front of the Spartans cage, making the save to secure the shutout. Kelly and the defense have allowed only three goals in the past six matches. On Saturday, October 2, the Spartans edged Annville-Cleona 2-1, avenging a 3-1 defeat on the road from 12 days earlier. Gonzalez and Esh scored in the fourth quarter to give Garden Spot a comeback victory. Liby Kauffman was credited with an assist on the day. Kelly made four saves in the close victory.

GIRLS’ SOCCER Garden Spot played some of its best soccer this past week as the girls’ team defeated Cocalico and McCaskey - both by the final score of 3-2. The Spartans improved to 3-9-0 on the year.
In an exciting home game on Friday afternoon, October 1, Kylie Weinhold’s stellar goaltending (10 saves) helped the Spartans hang on to defeat the Eagles. Taylor Soehner scored the only goal of the first half, giving Garden Spot a 1-0 halftime advantage. There were four goals scored in the second half, including scores by Angela Nurse and Ella Wilson of the home team. Wilson and Ashton Gonzalez each had an assist in the contest. The victory at McCaskey on Monday improved Spot’s L-L League mark to 2-6-0. In another tight match, Gonzalez, who had scored a goal two minutes into the second half, and Nurse scored late goals to edge the Red Tornado. McCaskey’s Emma Haiges, who had an assist in the first half, scored with two minutes remaining in the match. Weinhold came through with five saves for Spot. Sarah Crowley grabbed 10 saves for McCaskey. CROSS COUNTRY The Garden Spot boys’ cross country team lost to LampeterStrasburg and to Octorara in a Tuesday afternoon L-L League race at Garden Spot. The Spartans lost by a close 26-30 margin to Octorara while L-S beat the Spartans 15-50 and topped the Braves 16-48. Helping the Pioneers in their win was the fact that the first four runners to cross the finish line were L-S teammates, including Colin Whitaker, who won the race at a 16:49 pace. Josiah Martin led Garden Spot with his eighth-place finish at Photo by Connor Hollinger 18:29, followed by ninth-place Maxwell Leininger takes control of the ball for the Spartans in their 1-0, Section Two victory over finisher Alan Krock (18:35). as the Spartan boys fell to 4-5 on the year. The girls’ team edged Octorara 27-28 but came up short against L-S by a 23-36 score. The Pioneers topped Octorara 25-37. Nicole Kelch led the Spartans
(5-4) with her fifth-place finish in 24:03. Julie Hoover’s 24:10 was good for sixth place while Haley Zimmerman (25:17) took eighth place. Haylee Horning posted a time of 26:38, good for 12th.

The organization also discusses ways to help diners negotiate the exercise of eating dinner without their normal vision. “They will give tips on how (they teach) someone who has experienced a recent vision impairment to work their way around a plate,” explained Valudes, who noted information may include where to put the spoon and fork, where to start eating, and where to keep the water glass. On the menu for the event will be baked chicken, roast beef and gravy, red skin potatoes, baby carrots, string beans, and tossed salad. Dessert will feature pumpkin At Dinner in the Dark, diners may experience what it is like to eat with a vision impairment. and apple pies and chocolate cake. Lemonade and coffee will be included, and beer and wine will be available for purchase. “The menu is built to try to be conducive to vision impairments,” explained Valudes, adding that there will be no soup, peas, or other foods that are more challenging to eat with limited vision. Valudes said the event has grown since it was first held and that past dinners have attracted up to 60 attendees. “ We would love to have 75 to 100 people,” said Valudes. “That would be fantastic.” She added that the Lions Club would like to raise $3,000 or more for VisionCorps. The Paradise Lions Club is planning its fifth Dinner in the Dark, after the 2020 event was not held due to COVID-19 restrictions. Club member Heather Valudes remembers that the group began holding the event, which gives diners a unique opportunity to experience eating a meal with limited or no vision, in 2016. The 2021 Paradise Lions Dinner in the Dark will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 6 p.m. at White Chimneys, 5117 Lincoln Highway, Gap. In addition to the meal and presentations by VisionCorps, which will benefit from the dinner, the event will include a silent auction. The silent auction will feature up to 35 items, including sports memorabilia, a chocolate basket, and a carpet cleaning kit. Valudes noted that past silent auctions have included experiences such as rides on the Strasburg Rail Road or a tour of WGAL. According to Valudes, the reception and silent auction start at 6 p.m., and the auction generally closes at 6:55 p.m. with an announcement. Attendees will find each dinner table has a variety of blindfolds or special goggles. “VisionCorps provides goggles that mimic various types of vision impairments, such as glaucoma,” explained Valudes, who noted some goggles will be scratched and others will be blacked out in places. “So you’re eating with that impairment (during the dinner).” She noted that participants may choose whether to use a blindfold or a particular pair of goggles. “They select how they want

Lead-Free Families aims to identify and remediate lead hazards in at least 2,800 Lancaster County homes over the next decade. The $50 million investment is being initially funded and led by Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. Lead poisoning can result in serious and lifelong health and developmental issues, including lower IQ, slowed growth, learning problems, behavioral issues, hyperactivity, and hearing and speech development problems. It can also cause pregnancy problems, including

Jaerrid Strawser, along with adults Al Vega and Michelle Deller. Each day of the trip kicked off with a text of encouragement and Scripture from Lifecycles founder Lee DeRemer, followed by a ride to the evening’s stop. “We’d go out to dinner at night, and that’s when we could really bond, since we couldn’t talk to each other much during the rides,” said Wise, a retired art teacher from Manheim who joined Lifecycles four years ago. The trip brought out the best and the worst in everybody, Wise stated, adding, “We all had our moments when we were struggling in different ways, either physically or emotionally, but the boys all did great. They represented Lifecycles and the Lord well.” See Lifecycles pg 14

“We rode through Beartooth Highway. … We rode 27 miles uphill. It was a crystal-clear day, and you could see for miles. It was just beautiful.” The participants had concerns ahead of time that they’d all make it up the incline - and then concerns about coming down through hairpin turns and steep drop-offs. Despite the challenges, the riders experienced no major health concerns or problems - only some muscle aches, blisters and irritated asthma. Joining Wise on the trip were youth team members Zach Greineder, Liam Howell, Micah Lapp, Micah Clark, Monny Smith, Zander Malanchuk, AJ Vega and

The motto of Lifecycles is “Do hard things,” and for 60 days this summer, a team of bicyclists did just that. Eight boys and three adults rode 3,700 miles, from Sunset Beach, Ore., to Cape Henlopen, Del., as part of the Trans Am Extreme Challenge Ride. The ride is a project of Lifecycles, a nonprofit mentoring program committed to building young people of character through bicycling. “It was quite an adventure,” said Mike Wise, one of the adults who participated in the cross-country ride that began June 10 and ended on Aug. 8. “When I first heard it was going to be 60 days, I thought, ‘I can do 60 days, no problem.’ I had no idea how long 60 days would really be.” The group took a northern route across the United States. “The first five to seven days were rainy,” Wise recalled, of the group’s journey through Oregon and Washington. They biked through thunderstorms, torrential downpours and unseasonably cold, wet weather. But they never gave up, Wise said, and they also encountered unforgettable sights along the route. “A big highlight was Yellowstone National Park,” he said.

Increased blood lead screening of children and pregnant women is one of the core components of Lead-Free Families. The program’s other services, which are offered across Lancaster County, include lead screening, testing homes for lead, in-home lead remediation, home visits with health care and social service support, community education and outreach, and public policy advocacy and education For more information on Lead-Free Families or to apply for the program, visit www.LeadFreeFamilies.org or call 717-544-LEAD (5323).

Smith, director of sales and communications, adding that the faire has held the Halloween events for several years. “It was a natural fit.” The weekends will feature all of the usual faire festivities, along with special holiday-themed activities, she stated. Smith set up the Halloween scenario, saying that through his privateering, Sir Walter Raleigh has brought prosperity and commerce to the Shire of Mount Hope, but he’s also brought attention, and some of it is unwanted. “As ships laden with riches traverse the ... rivers and bays, a dark and hungry force begins to stir in the murky waters below, woken from its standing slumber and champing at the bit for blood,” she related. “The various factions of the Shire will have to unite despite their differing beliefs and priorities to make use of all their resources, natural and otherwise to fight this supernatural threat.” She encouraged people to visit the faire to find out: Will the humble magic of the Shire prevail or will all descend into unbridled chaos? Along with the faire’s traditional entertainment schedule, including live music, comedy shows and jousts, the weekends will feature Halloween elements. A “Nipperkins” costume contest will be held for children age 11 and under. Adults can also participate in a costume contest that will award prizes for both individual and group costumes. Additional activities will include a treasure hunt, where children will be invited to follow a map and search for buried treasure on the Shire, as well as trick-ortreat throughout the grounds. Fall and Halloween decorations will be on display as well, including Scratchy the pumpkin creature. “Scratchy is over two stories tall and greets people each season just inside the front gates,” Smith stated. She emphasized that visitors to the Renaissance Faire must purchase tickets online ahead of their visit, and that tickets are date specific. There are no gate sales. “Tickets can be purchased up to and including the day of the event, provided there is availability,” she said, “and (you can) print or show your tickets from a mobile device.” For more information about Halloween Days and Spooky Knights, visit www.parenfaire.com.

Fall is the perfect time to join the Berks Community Strollers, a local hiking group that has scheduled weekly outings in October, November and December. The Strollers, an offshoot of the Berks Community Hiking Club, was formed for those interested in more of a leisurely stroll rather than a fast-paced hike. People do not have to be members to attend Strollers’ hikes. “On any given hike we have 10 to 15 people, and after the hike, some go to lunch together at the nearest restaurant,” explained
Strollers member Angele Arutunian, noting that hike locations are typically listed weekly in the Community Calendar section of the Community Courier. “Although (participants) are mostly seniors, sometimes we get younger people who see the hike in the paper.” Those who would like to join the Strollers group are asked to pay a nominal yearly membership fee. Members are given special invitations to the annual summer hike and picnic, a Christmas hike and luncheon and multi-day trips. The Berks Community Strollers have scheduled weekly Saturday hikes in October. For more information or directions to any of the locations, contact the hike leader. On Oct. 16, the Strollers will hike at the Blue Marsh Lake Stilling Basin, 1280 Palisades Drive, Leesport. The

At 63, Wise said he isn’t sure he’s up for another cross-country bike ride, but he knows the memories from this one will last for years. “One of the boys, after the trip was over, came up to me and said, ‘Can you help me with my devotions? I like doing them, and I feel so much better when I do them, and I don’t want that to end,’” Wise remarked. “That made me realize what a lasting impact this trip is going to have on these boys.” For more information on Lifecycles, visit www.life cyclesteam.org.

Building Recovery Capital Through a state grant, Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) is helping people in recovery build wealth. This isn’t monetary wealth, but rather a wealth of resources and support they need to succeed in their recovery journey. “We’re looking at the entire package people in recovery need, whether that’s finding a job or a place to live
or rebuilding their relationship with their family,” said Stacy Emminger, executive director of DSAA. “This is called ‘recovery capital,’ and the more stable your recovery capital is, the better your odds of staying in recovery.” The Recovery Capital Program (Re-Cap) is accepting applicants age 18 and older to participate in the program. Although DSAA’s grant is for a two-year pilot program, Re-
Cap participants will commit to the program for one year. During that time, they will work one-on-one with a recovery coach and will have access to certified recovery specialists as well as computer software designed to connect them to community resources, collect data and monitor progress, Emminger said. “People who are new in recovery, oftentimes they have a bunch of barriers fac-
ing them. They might be on probation. They might need to find a job or a place to live,” she explained. “All of these can be barriers to a successful recovery.” DSAA is the first agency in the state to use the Re-Cap software, Emminger said, adding, “All of this is clientdriven, and it’s very individualized, depending on what the client needs.” See DSAA pg 18

Jack-o’-lanterns are one of many classic symbols of Halloween. A refresher course on carving one can help those who have not dusted off their carving skills since last fall. A few simple tips can help Halloween celebrants ensure their jack-o’-lanterns make it all the way to the big day at the end of October. It is important not to carve pumpkins too early. Though it can be tempting and fun to carve a jack-o’-lantern once the calendar turns to October, it is unlikely the finished product will make it to Oct. 31. Horticulturists indicate that jack-o’-lanterns have a shelf life of roughly five to 10 days, though an especially cold October could shorten that life expectancy even further. Jack-o’-lanterns intended to greet trick-or-treaters on Halloween should be carved a few
days before the big day. The design should be outlined onto the pumpkin using a dry-erase marker before making a cut. It is easy to make mistakes when carving a jack-o’-lantern, especially if it is one’s first time using a carving knife since last year. Carvers should avoid severing the stem. When many people envision jack-o’lanterns, the image in their minds is one in which the top of the pumpkin is removed so candles or lights can be easily placed inside. However, the custom pumpkin carving experts at New York-based Maniac Pumpkin Carvers note that removing the top cuts off the vine, which supplies the pumpkin with nutrients and moisture, even after it has been cut. A hole in the back of the pumpkin can provide easy access when placing candles

While the grant will fund the recovery coach, Emminger will head up the family component of Re-Cap. “People who are in recovery have often burned a lot of bridges with their family, and they aren’t sure how to make amends or how to rebuild those relationships,” she said. “I’ll help families assess their needs. I’ll provide addiction education and help guide them in how they can best support their loved one.” Emminger noted that participation in Re-Cap is completely free. “One of the reasons we applied for this grant is because typically in recovery, people have to pay out of pocket for care or they have to use the program attached to a specific facility, which can be very limiting,” she stated. “Our coach will work with the person regardless of where they are in their recovery or what recovery path they are taking.” DSAA is one of just a handful of agencies to be awarded a grant from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, and Emminger is hopeful that once the pilot program is wrapping up, she will be able to apply to fund a second recovery coach. To apply for Re-Cap, visit www.dsasquared.org and fill out a contact form, call the office at 717-492-4596 or send a message through DSAA’s Facebook page.
or lights inside and cutting there will not cut off the nutrient and moisture supply a pumpkin needs to avoid drying out. Everything should be scooped out. The interior of a pumpkin will be loaded with seeds, which can be removed and later roasted to make a savory snack. In addition to removing the seeds, all the pulp should be scooped out. Pulp left in the pumpkin will soon get moldy, and that can shorten the lifespan of the jack-o’-lantern. In addition,
when removing the interior, individuals should try to scrape the front inner wall of the pumpkin thin, which may make it easier to carve. Candles should be avoided when lighting the interior of the jack-o’-lantern. Candles might seem like the most authentic and spooky way to light the interior of the pumpkin, but the heat produced by a burning candle can shorten the life expectancy of the jacko’-lantern. An LED light does not give off much heat and will provide ample illumination.
